    Steaming bowl of miso soup.
    Jenn W.

I love local spots that do dishes right and even better when run by locals. I came here looking for a place that served an eel bowl/platter and I found it here after searching through Yelp and this place wasn't far off. I got their eel bowl and this dish was done to perfection. Simple dish, but perfectly made and exactly what I wanted. Came with a bowl of hot miso soup. I have nothing to complain about in this dish, but I'll have to come back later to try their sushi although I hear it's top notch for the price. Service was friendly and accomodating as possilbe during a busy weekend lunch hour, so no complaints there. Ambiance is not trendy, but homey and casual and unassuming. Location: On Western Avenue in a strip mall of shops across the street from a Toyota Dealer and across the street from King's Hawaiian Local Place on the corner. Parking is a private lot, but can be difficult to find parking during weekend dinner times as this place shares space with a bunch of other eateries, but there is street parking available as well. I need to come back to try their sushi next time. Happy eating!!

We did takeout at Sushi Island. I think the food is best eaten there on the premises of the restaurant;however, takeout wasn't bad. Next time I'd rather dine-in. The restaurant is a hole-in-the-wall and full of SouthBay locals and beyond. It's a good sign when you see that the restaurant is busy. They serve huge combo style meals that's made to order and has that homemade by grandma vibe. Sushi is available, but it's not their strength. I'd say the nigiri and rolls are decent, but not great. The combo meals are the star of the show; a great value with hearty portions. Cash and credit accepted. Shared Private Parking available in front of the restaurant.

The service is very friendly here, as first time visitors for in restaurant dining Right off the 405 with King's Hawaiian Local Place as a landmark reference point adjacent on the same side across the street but on the same side. Parking is easy too!

Unassuming sushi spot in a small plaza. Don't let it fool, this place is amazing! I've been here multiple times and have ordered to-go, both experiences have been great! My two orders I typically get are the : 20 piece nigiri with 2 choices of rolls for $45 (ordered it last winter, not sure of price now). I think it's an absolutely good deal. But keep in mind there is about 30~45min pick-up time for this which makes sense to me I dont mind waiting. Next, I love their nigiri combination A and B. Everything taste so fresh and their eel specifically always taste soo delicious. There is ample seating inside, feels very home and local. Love it! Parking may be a bit difficult as it's a small lot but other than that I do love this place.

You can tell the quality of a place by two things: the facilities and the utensils. Restroom was okay. Not the best, but not the worst. Chopsticks were the lightweight cheap kind that have splinters. Nice family run place. Some seating - we were there for a while and it seemed like a lot of regular customers came through. Prices seemed fair, lots of options with low cost items to premium items. The sushi was okay. I usually don't soy sauce but it felt like I needed a dip. The hot udon was yummy. The noodles were soft, juicy, and flavorful. Servers didn't come around really. We didn't understand that; we were there chatting for a while too and it seemed forever before they came to take our order and once the food was set that was it. Maybe most people take it to go.

The good: I got two speciality sushi rolls (one was yellowtail jalapeno) and a combo plate with 3 items (spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, and meatballs). The combo plate was $20 and came with a side salad, rice and miso soup as well. The workers were attentive and the service was good. The price was around $52 for two people (with 2 toddlers). The meatballs were tender and had the right proportion of sauce. The prices were very fair. The menu isn't pretentious but there are still a lot of options. Though you'd think this place was most known for their sushi, I felt like they had a lot of non-sushi entree item options. They sell party trays as well (I hope to take advantage of this in the future). The bad: There's no outdoor dining. The inside is small and not great for large groups. My husband didn't care for the sushi rolls much but I thought they were pretty good. The interesting: The ambience is very casual and hole-in-the-wall-like. The plaza has a lot of Japanese establishments so the exterior architecture had dark brown wooden slats that look Japanese-esque. We were the only guests when we first entered but the restaurant filled up after we got seated. You can get a discount on your food if you write a positive review on Yelp. You can order ahead online. They had free anime coasters and some chocolate kisses at the front counter.

I've been visiting this spot since I starting working in the area. A really great, casual Japanese dining spot. I like the simple cut sushi rolls that they offer, as well the hot udon and tempura varieties. The service is good and sometimes they have off days where the rolls aren't as tidy and the orders get mixed up, but overall expect to be satisfied here for a great price!

Ambiance: it's a small family style Japanese restaurant located in a shared plaza with other merchants Service: very friendly and attentive, served food and refilled water adequately Food: classic sushi, rolls, and combination plates on their menu Tempura - **** 2 shrimps & 3 vegetables, recommend Spicy Scallop Roll - *** average taste Chirashi - **** variety of raw fish, fresh taste, recommend Nigiri Sushi - **** TUNA, YELLOWTAIL, SALMON, ALBACORE, SHRIMP, FRESH WATER EEL, SURF CLAM, recommend Miso Soup - *** bold taste Price: generous portions and affordable prices, expect $25+ per person for a very satisfying hearty meal

Torrance Food Crawl #424 Sushi Island is a small Japanese restaurant that has a lot of take-out business. The main focus is sushi, but there are soups and combination plates to fill out the menu. Some 15+ years ago, when I was still working, I ordered a large sushi platter for the work crowd. It was very well received. I did this because someone else brought in a sushi platter from the local Costco, and most people had no idea if that was good or bad sushi. After I brought in sushi from Sushi Island, these people realized that the Costco platters were not as good as they may have initially thought. I've enjoyed everything I've had here: sushi, sashimi, soups, and combination plates. I've liked the non-sushi items on the menu better than the sushi, not that the sushi is at all bad. There are about a half dozen tables where you can sit, or just order take-out. The workers here have always been very friendly. There is a parking lot shared by the businesses in the small strip mall, and I've never had a problem finding a parking spot. I will certainly be returning. NOTE: This restaurant has a Gardena mailing address but is physically located in the City of Torrance.

A little hidden gem. Quaint place with yummy food. We really enjoyed the unagi don and scallop roll. We got a crunchy roll and it was very tasty as well. We were the only ones eating in but lots of people coming in for takeout orders. Good place to checkout if you're nearby and craving sushi.

This is our go to sushi place with the family. Great service, no muss, and affordable as always! Ambience is simple and clean.

The prices are very reasonable for what you get, especially given the current economic climate. We ordered the Nigiri Sushi Combo B for $16.95, and it was fresh and delicious. The wait for our food was a bit longer than expected, but it wasn't a big deal. I'll definitely be returning for more!

And the broth made from the sweet shrimp head was liquid gold. A really nice finish to dinner was a little scoop of black sesame ice cream, included in the omakase. I actually appreciated that the sushi rice didn't overwhelm the fish. The miso soup was good (had more than just tofu but also had carrots, and diakon radish bits). First time having the Kakitamajiru. Not bad at all either. If I'm a fan, then why did I not give this place 5 stars? The quality of the actual fish. When I had asked the waitress what the difference between the fish was for the Chirashi bowl vs sushi combo vs omakase, she said it was the quality of fish. I won't know for sure, but the quality of the sushi for the omakase was not top tier. It was okay. Not the worst but surely not "top tier." I honestly would not be surprised if i ordered the sushi combo/chirashi bowl, my opinion of quality would be the same. Then, that would mean I'm paying extra for the miso soup, Kakitamajiru, and dessert for the omakase? Overall, a decent place id be willing to come back to and try again.

Azuma in Gardena is one of those places where I already know what I'm ordering before I even sit…read moredown. The teriyaki beef dinner is my must have every time, and it has yet to disappoint. I always order the beef medium rare, and they consistently get the temperature right. That reliability honestly stands out to me because I have been to actual steak restaurants where the doneness can be hit or miss. At Azuma, I can confidently ask for medium rare and trust that it will come out exactly that way without having to order it rarer just to compensate. The teriyaki sauce is also really well balanced. It has enough sweetness to give you that classic teriyaki flavor without becoming overly sugary or masking the taste of the beef. One of my favorite parts of the meal is actually toward the end, when the white rice has soaked up both the teriyaki sauce and the savory juices from the steak. Mixing everything together makes even the remaining rice incredibly flavorful. The macaroni salad is another pleasant surprise. I'm normally not much of a macaroni salad person, but theirs is one I actually enjoy and willingly finish. Add a little of the teriyaki sauce to it and it gets even better. The shrimp fried rice is also worth ordering. They are very generous with the shrimp, and these are actually large, substantial pieces rather than the tiny shrimp you often see tossed into fried rice. The rice is mixed with egg and green onions as well, making it savory, satisfying, and substantial enough to enjoy on its own. Overall, Azuma continues to be a reliable favorite for me. The perfectly cooked teriyaki beef is easily the star, but the balanced sauce, solid sides, and generous shrimp fried rice make the whole meal satisfying. At this point, ordering the teriyaki beef dinner here is less of a decision and more of a tradition.
