We were quick to be greeted but with a smile, but was a bit inexperienced with answering our questions on certain dishes, brought the wrong drink, and totally forgot one of the main dishes. We did order a lot so it wasn't too terrible not having one of the main dishes. The food was tasty but nothing stood out for taste from the appetizers to the rolls. The appetizer gyoza and tofu were both bland and at room temperature, which wasn't so bad for the gyoza but not for the tofu dish as it sits in sauce. It became soggy and chewy. The edamame was hot and had the perfect amount of salt. The one main dish that we did have was good but the seafood was a little on the chewy end. Food was amazing! We had the melt in your mouth octopus balls (takoyaki) and tempura for appetizers. For entrees , the sashimi platter was presented as a work of art, and as well as the firecracker rolls. The tuna neck was perfectly preserved crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. We've been waiting for this sushi establishment for quite a while and we were so excited it opened late last year! Living down the road, my husband and I frequent this business often. Yes the prices are slightly higher compared to neighboring sushi restaurants, but this hole in the wall brings in the quality of fish it serves. A little restrictive on my diet from my daughters food allergies while breastfeeding, I tend to order sashimi if it is available as my first choice. (Also gives me a frame of reference in terms of freshness in their fishes they serve!). Solid A+. For the quality of fish, it is worth the price tag. NOT fishy at all from the salmon to tuna. I have been here twice and Sushi Koji now sits at the top of my sushi restaurant list. This hidden gem has the best sushi that I've found in the area. The sashimi melts in your mouth, the rolls are creative and not too "ricey" and the ramen is top notch. **Favorite roll: MAD FUJI -- please try! It's has more toppings than I normally like on roll but it works! The ramen noodles are handmade and the broth (at least on the TanTan) is just spicy enough that it doesn't overpower all of the other flavors. Hubby and I share the ramen and order an extra egg on the side so we each have a mini ramen to compliment our roll or sashimi. I write this as my very full stomach sings a happy sushi song but I promise it's worth the extra time on the treadmill. read more

Such a cute place! Restaurant is pretty small so get there early or not during rush hours or you will be waiting. Located in a shopping center with Dollar Tree. I like how the parking is easy here as it's just a normal lot. I came during restaurant week and got a ramen, specialty roll and the sashimi. The sashimi pieces were hugeeeee! Quality is top notch. I really enjoyed my dinner here. Service could have been a little better but we went when it was beginning to get crazy so I understand. We really enjoyed the seafood and tonkotsu ramens. Good sushi with matching price point. Got the Sushi for Two. All the fish tasted fresh and the portion was proper. The banana-wrapped sushi was a treat because it was unique. Can't recall what fish it was but it was tasty. Didn't care for the speciality roll because it had too much of a sweet sauce on top. Prefer simpler rolls with 1-2 ingredients. But it was fine. I really enjoyed this place. The food was very good with all high quality, fresh fish. We did the sushi for two which made it easy as we couldn't decide on what we wanted. Got a few apps as well and those were sooo good. I highly recommend any of the crudos. The scallop crudo was slightly seared with this wonderful yuzu sauce around it. Service was awesome. Decided to give it a second chance during Vienna Restaurant week. They're not getting a third chance. We ordered: pork gyoza, fried oyster, chirashi, 2 rolls, hotate sashimi, otoro sashimi, and uni nigiri. Pork gyoza was fine. The fried oyster tasted fine but the breading had gaps in it. Chirashi came with a side of salad and miso soup. The miso soup is the worst I've ever tasted... it has a weird musky feel to it and is barely salty. It didn't taste disgusting but it was wrong. The chirashi itself came with escolar (a fish that should not be served. This was also pointed out other reviews of the chirashi). Plating of fish was good, but you can tell that the knife work was bad. Fish pieces were not clean cut. Overall the chirashi came with: 3 pieces of escolar, 3 pieces of tuna, 3 salmon, 2 yellowtail, 1 octopus, 1 unagi, 1 shrimp, and 1 mackerel. The mackerel was especially badly cut, and it tasted oddly sweet. The rainbow roll was made with escolar instead of yellowtail, which is a huge no no. Husband said the taste was fine but nothing special. I will admit that their hotate and otoro are good. But the uni we ordered were bad... good uni should taste fresh, sweet, and vibrant. Theirs tasted old and musky (even bitter to my husband). Overall, everything just felt wrong at Sushi Koji. Miso soup was off; soy sauce wasn't salty; random fish is cut badly and tastes slightly sweet. The tamagoyaki looks pretty but is neither the sweet style (like you can buy at hMart) or the dashi/savory style. Things that should be slightly sour (sushi vinegar to balance raw fish) are not. We just returned from Japan a month ago... this was not the right restaurant to relive our vacation. So why the 2 stars? They have improved the sushi rice that was so disgustingly sweet to us last time. The rice portion of the chirashi was good. They were busy so others must like this weird style of American Japanese food. Hopefully this will free up the good restaurants for people looking for good Japanese food. read more

Overall - I really enjoyed the sushi and I will be back! I ordered takeout but when I went in I noticed the restaurant was really cute and cozy, which made me wish I was dining in. I only had two rolls -- the speciality roll was just OK and the less complicated traditional roll was very, very good. For the speciality roll I ordered, which was the scallop roll, I thought it was meh. It's a favorite of mine at local sushi restaurants and the flavor was missing in this one. I also ordered a Tuna roll, and I added cream cheese, and that was phenomenal. The quality of the tuna was far superior to most other sushi restaurants. I probably could have used a little more cream cheese in some of the individual rolls, but no matter -- it was amazing. Overall - I will come back but I will probably stick with the simpler rolls (adding cream cheese along the way, because everything tastes better with cream cheese!). read more

WOW what a gem in Vienna - didn't know what to expect from this neighborhood sushi joint in a strip mall, but the food was fantastic. Parking is ample - they renovated the strip mall and lot a year or so ago so it is easy to get in and out and find a space. The decor and vibe are very similar to what you'll find in any other NoVa sushi spot - kitchen in the back, a few tables in the center, high booths lining the walls, mostly made of bamboo. The service was just ok - not rude but not particularly friendly. We made it just before the dinner rush so the food came out quickly which was nice. They have a small get good sake list and we went with a half bottle of unfiltered sake. We started with the scallop carpaccio which was fantastic - great contrast between the acidity of the citrus and the umami from the salmon roe. Really great dish. We also had the assorted veggie and shrimp tempura which was fried to perfection and wonderfully crispy. My only complaint is that it cost a whopping $21 - I've never paid anything close to that for tempura in my life. After that my wife had some maki rolls which she loved. They unfortunately were out of uni, so I had yellowtail belly, salmon belly, and scallop sushi. All were fresh and delicious. No joke, some of the best yellowtail I've had in recent memory. I was still hungry so I ordered a rainbow roll which was uninspired - it was basically a California roll with some thin slices of other fish on top for color. It needed texture and a pop of flavor from another element, because it was just bland. The bill was more expensive than I expected as we didn't order a ton of food or anything g super premium - $145 after tip. Regardless, we will be back because we loved the fish at Koji. read more

So I have been here before, but this time I ordered carryout, the large sashimi. Came home only to find out that the large 18 pc. sashimi does not come with rice?!?! It came with soup and salad, but no rice???? I thought it was a mistake so I called to let them know that they forgot my rice, but the lady said that for sashimi, "rice is upon request"???? WTF??? I have never heard that before. I suppose all the other times I've been in, I must've ordered either a chirashi, tekka or a sake don. It didn't even say on the menu that rice is not included. It was such a damper on my Mother's Day meal to find that out coming home to my carryout order. The irony is that the cuts of fish were pretty good and generous, so the whole rice not included thing seems like such a slap in the face to feel so nickeled and dimed like that. $50 bucks for a plate of sashimi with no rice feels really really stingy, when a $35 plate of chirashi or tekka don does! Makes no sense! Even so, had they made that fact clear upon ordering, of course I would have paid extra for the rice! read more

We got the sashimi platter, which comes with 10 different kinds of raw fish and ranging 2-3 pieces for each sashimi. The platter comes with salmon, toro, tuna, white tuna, mackerel, sea bass, clam, octopus, and tilapia etc. My favorite were the white tuna and toro, because they were super tender and juicy, literally melts in your mouth with minimal chewing. The outer layer for the white tuna tasted like it was slightly seared, quite interesting piece. Another sashimi I really enjoyed was the sea bass. It was delicious and yummy, definitely high quality (not mushy) and did not smell fishy at all. The fatty toro nigiri was tasty, fatty, and scrumptious, and the sushi rice was at the right temperature and chewy. Also, I got to mentioned that their ginger slices were amazing, spicy, and crunchy, a great pallet cleanser. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - Located in a shopping center, but nothing fancy about its appearances from the outside, so will easily be missed. When you walk in, the interior design is like most Japanese restaurants; simple, ordinary, and bright. There's plenty of tables and booths. The only downside was the smell of the restaurant. Might be the fact that it was a new restaurant, and the entire place smelled like fish sauce, but it was clean at least. I am a bit surprised by how positive reviews have been (though there were only 4 at the time of my posting). I was so excited to see the coming soon sign go up for Sushi Koji and to read the news articles on the chef. Sadly the food quality did not meet the hype. (*I ordered for take away so I will give some credit back on cooked dishes) Sushi Koji is so close to my house that I am tempted to give them another shot in case I came in on an off day. I ordered Chirashi, Beet Salmon, Miso Black Cod, and Age Dashi Tofu. Chirashi - Fish selection was basic, rice mediocre, and the flavor Shiso overpowered any think I might have enjoyed. The highlight of the Chirashi was the Tamago which was excellent and did a lot to redeem the rest of the dish. Given the price ~24 (similar to nearby Sushi Yoshi & Kizuna) I expected more. Other sushi restaurants offer greater selection, quality, and quantity. Beet Salmon - Apparently this was reasonably good. My wife ordered it and was generally happy with the flavor. The rice was still mediocre but it the salmon was well flavored. This was indicated as a house specialty, and the that end was unique as I have not seen a similar dish elsewhere. Age Dashi Tofu - Given I ordered take away and this is a fried tofu dish that sits in dashi (basically soup) i will not knock the disk on texture, I did know that it was a dish that would not travel we.ll. To the restaurants credit they packaged the soup separate from the tofu. I appreciate the attention to detail on packaging. The dish was bland though. I would not order again. Black Cod - This was a little overcooked and way too salty. Overcooked could be blamed on me ordering cooked fish as a take away order. The salt level was high enough that we did not bother to eat the full dish. Despite the issues I still have hope that Sushi Koji will work out some of their issues. I am writing this review in during a pandemic induce labor shortage, about a restaurant that has been open for less than a month. I plan to return and give them another chance. read more

There is a lot of parking in the shopping center where this restaurant is located. We were able to find a spot right in front of the entrance. We were greeted and seated by someone and placed our order. We had hot roasted japanese green tea and it was perfect for us since we had gotten all wet from the rain and were cold. The carpaccio yellow tail was really good. It was in a soy sauce based sauce and had a little kick to it. The salmon carpaccio was disgusting, ill probably never order that one again. It tasted like it was glazed in some kind of overly sweet Citron jelly. But if thats your jam, I'd say get it lol. The takoyaki was not good. It lacked flavor, there was no octopus in it, and it was mushy. The Sake Don was reallly good, the Tamago it came with was a nice touch. Loved the rice mixture it came with. The avocado roll and Paradise roll were really good too. Our kids really enjoyed the beef udon noodles which I unfortunately failed to take a picture of. We called up SushiKoji and asked for a reservation of 8 and they said it'll only take them 15 minutes to get the tables ready and everything. Once we arrived we ordered a very large meal, surprisingly it was very of quality and cheap. It was probably some of the best sushi I've ever had. I mentioned the birthday when we came in and, without prompting or asking , they put all our shush orders on a boat to make it special. I thought that was very nice. The sushi was all fresh and delicious. We had a variety of things and nothing left on the plate when we were done. The Paradise Roll was beautiful and yummy, the gyoza were just right and the nigiri were perfect on really fresh and flavorful sushi rice. We will definitely be back! This place has the best fried rolls I have ever eaten. I usually do not care for them but the exterior was so light and crunchy on our fried California roll, it was so delicious! My kids were salivating over the sushi boat, which we did it try, but the tamago and inari were huge hits with them. I also enjoyed the Japanese soap opera playing quietly on the TV screen. When we went it was on the late afternoon and pretty chill, but I can see how it could get posy since it is a small narrow space.
