Sushi Koji is a neighborhood gem, serving delicious Japanese cuisine. The place is tucked away in a strip mall but the interior is nice with wooden accents and the service was good. But what brings us back is the food - sashimi is generous and beautifully presented and they have wonderful dishes like miso black cod and hamachi Kama. My family, especially my Japanese mother, enjoyed the food a lot. The only dish they found slightly less than authentic was the agedashi tofu, but overall it is excellent and highly recommended. read more

I went to the restaurant with my friend and we both are Japanese. We were surprised that they have authentic Japanese food that we don't usually find at other Japanese restaurants. I was looking for an more authentic sushi experience where I can sit at the sushi bar, but there is no sushi bar and I sat the table. I ordered sushi and sashimi platter and Negi toro roll. As one of signature platters, I was surprised to see the choice of fish being big eye tuna (reasonable), salmon (ok) and escolar/white tuna (come on) and three same kind of fish for sashimi, one sasazuchi (bamboo wrapped sushi) of madai (seabream), ebi nigiri, and spicy tuna roll. There are hamachi (yellowtail) madai, unagi to name a few. The chef choice of fish was intriguing. The sushi rice was very sweet and on the slightly wet and soft side. Fish to rice ratio is off with fish being on the small side. I would recommend trying the sasasuchi first, so you may possibly taste the bamboo aroma on the madai(?) nigiri the chef intended. The spicy tuna would leave some burn after taste and you may want to save it toward the end, otherwise all other nigiri and samashi will taste the same. I saved the sweet Tamago (baked egg) at the very end to cut back the spiciness of the spicy tuna roll. IMHO, It's too spicy for a sushi and sashimi platter. What saves the day is the Negi toro roll. It's decent and I did not leave feeling hungry. For a $50-person meal with Hojicha (tea), I expected a better treat. read more

WOW what a gem in Vienna - didn't know what to expect from this neighborhood sushi joint in a strip mall, but the food was fantastic. Parking is ample - they renovated the strip mall and lot a year or so ago so it is easy to get in and out and find a space. The decor and vibe are very similar to what you'll find in any other NoVa sushi spot - kitchen in the back, a few tables in the center, high booths lining the walls, mostly made of bamboo. The service was just ok - not rude but not particularly friendly. We made it just before the dinner rush so the food came out quickly which was nice. They have a small get good sake list and we went with a half bottle of unfiltered sake. We started with the scallop carpaccio which was fantastic - great contrast between the acidity of the citrus and the umami from the salmon roe. Really great dish. We also had the assorted veggie and shrimp tempura which was fried to perfection and wonderfully crispy. My only complaint is that it cost a whopping $21 - I've never paid anything close to that for tempura in my life. After that my wife had some maki rolls which she loved. They unfortunately were out of uni, so I had yellowtail belly, salmon belly, and scallop sushi. All were fresh and delicious. No joke, some of the best yellowtail I've had in recent memory. I was still hungry so I ordered a rainbow roll which was uninspired - it was basically a California roll with some thin slices of other fish on top for color. It needed texture and a pop of flavor from another element, because it was just bland. The bill was more expensive than I expected as we didn't order a ton of food or anything g super premium - $145 after tip. Regardless, we will be back because we loved the fish at Koji. read more

Sushi Koji has amazing ramen and even better service! My husband and I were craving ramen and came in for a late lunch yesterday. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication with the very friendly hostess who took our order, and we were served a different ramen than we were expecting (the seafood ramen instead of the spicy Tan Tan ramen). Without hesitating, she offered to wrap up the seafood ramen for us to bring home and we were brought the Tan Tan ramen in a few minutes. It was delicious and the broth in particular was incredible - the perfect spice level for someone who likes a little bit of a kick. The noodles were a bit different than some other ramen I've had (most recently at Daikaya in DC), but still really good. Ordered a sushi platter for my birthday. Order was ready on time. Friendly staff at the front. Quality of the fish was excellent! Was never a big fan of the mackerel because, no matter where I had it in the past, it wasn't very fresh, but IT WAS EXCELLENT. Tuna and yellowtail was very good & everyone had a fabulous meal. We tried this new restaurant for lunch and loved it! Nothing fancy about its appearances--to an unassuming passerby, it looks like just another Japanese restaurant. At first glance, just simple and ordinary. But the food is anything but simple. We ordered an assortment of rolls, nigiri, and sushi, and the flavors were quite complex. I could tell that the sushi chef took great care with every cut, and the fish melted in my mouth. Karaage chicken and tempura for appetizer were also very delicious. Walked in around 6 PM day after Christmas and I guess everyone else had the same idea. I think the restaurant was pretty short-staffed and the two servers working didn't have much experience. It took a very long time to get our order in and receive our food. I'm assuming they were also fielding a lot of take out orders on top of dine-in patrons. I worked in food service too, so with any new restaurant there are some growing pains and I tried to be understanding, but some people were starting to get up to grab their own napkins and chopsticks. When we finally got the sushi, there wasn't any wasabi or ginger on the plate, but we were so hungry by then it didn't matter lol. The actual food was delicious. And my son loves their boat - which they're been serving their sushi to us consistently (I almost wonder if they recognize him and knows he likes it). Service has been consistently good. They check in often, and the servers we've getting lately are all really sweet with my son. We go out for sushi two - three times a month and were loyal to another sushi restaurant for 30 years, but they started cutting corners during/after Covid and after giving them three tries post-Covid, we began our search for a new sushi place. We tried several other places looking for "The One" and have now found it. This was by far the best sushi I've had in years. The presentation was beautiful - I wish I'd taken photos. The quality was fantastic and we enjoyed every bite. There was one employee who served as both hostess and waitress and she did a fantastic job. She was incredibly busy, but never missed a beat. While were waiting for a table, someone who came to pick up his takeout order said it's the best sushi in the DC area and they go from McLean for takeout twice a month. We also live in McLean and this is our new spot. The search is over and I'm so excited to find such quality sushi nearby! read more

It was so fresh, and it just melted in your mouth. I am drooling right now as I am writing this. And of course, I have to mention the rolls I ordered. Omg! Where should I begin. I order baked crab meats roll and soft shell crabs roll. They were out of this world. This is hands-down the best place for sushi in the DMV area! As a Japanese person, I can say that this is my go-to place for sushi. If you are looking for high-quality sushi, fish, or Japanese dishes, definitely look no further than Sushi Koji. You simply will not get better value anywhere else. The fish is of excellent quality and the tastes are reminiscent of Japan, which is often hard to find in the states. Sushi Koji opened relatively recently and they've been nothing short of fantastic. Chef Lee is so incredible at what he does and he is also simply a wonderful person. All of the staff at Sushi Koji are so kind and attentive. The service is 10/10. If you like salmon or tuna, I'd recommend the salmon don or tuna don. You cannot go wrong with the chirashi, and they offer some really great appetizers (our favorites include Agedashi tofu, fried oyster, chicken karaage). I also enjoy getting takeout from Sushi Koji, as the quality is always well-preserved. I'd give more stars if I could. I'm so grateful to have found such a fantastic place for authentic Japanese cuisine -- haven't found one with such good value in other big cities like NYC or Boston. The rolls are fresh and tasty and great size as well. However when we decided to come back the weekend after to try the B platter for $150 it was a huge disappointment. My family wasn't impressed at all. There was a tiny cuttlefish as a tiny side that tasted too fishy, the California roll was too simple for a $150 platter, and the other rolls were too plain for something of that price. Makes me wonder what the difference between the $100 and $150 to make it worth the additional cost. read more
