I first ran into this place while apartment hunting in Capitol Hill. I was skeptical of its appearance but was so hungry I ordered something anyway. You should've seen the look on my face when the chef brought out my rainbow roll. The rolls were so huge I would be full for the rest of the day. The ingredients were so fresh, I honestly felt I never had good sushi until that moment. Now I'm hooked. I go there often and the service is so personalized, they even know my name. The chef moves quickly and effortlessly to get your meal to you as soon as possible. The variety of sushi they offer is beyond belief I suggest the volcano, rainbow, or Washington roll. Prices are about $7-9 for a sushi roll. I would recommend calling beforehand and ordering it to go because the place is extremely small. In fact, most of the seating area is outside. The sushi nigiri was some of the biggest I have seen for such a reasonable price. read more

Small place with satisfying sushi. Its a classic hole in the wall. The style of wallpaper with old writing and torn edges make it really seem like it was gored out with a caterpillar. After reading so many positive yelp reviews, I must say this place was nothing but a disappointment in every possible way. Ordered a sushi combo with an extra order of yellowtail. Sat at one of two tiny tables outside - thankfully it was a sunny day, otherwise there are only 4 or 5 bar seats inside (not at a sushi bar - at a bar lining the back corner of the walk-in-closet sized hole in the wall establishment. Miso soup was served first, after about 10 minutes, with tofu tasting distinctly like plastic. Sushi came out after another 15 minutes or so. Why so slow? It's a mystery - they certainly were not busy. After another 10 minutes or so, they brought out water for us, which they'd previously forgotten. By this point we had given up on our sushi after trying a piece of each nigiri and a couple pieces of the spicy tuna roll - all tasted roughly on par with 7-eleven sushi trays that you must douse with wasabi and soy sauce to swallow. Spent $24 after tax and tip, and wish I'd just saved it for a good lunch special at a good sushi restaurant. Service: Slow Food: Terrible Price: Way too high, especially given the quality Atmosphere: Only nice if it is sunny (and this is Seattle, so that doesn't get you very far). This was my first foray into using yelp, and boy did it pay off. I wanted to take my son to a sushi restaurant before going to see Young Frankenstein at the Paramount Theatre, and Sushi Maki was the only one that was anywhere near. I was a little apprehensive about previous comments concerning the size and crowds, but we lucked out - no lines at all at 5:30 on a Thursday. Everthing else we read in the previous postings was true - it was a tiny, hole-in-the-wall place and parking was a challenge, but the food was AWESOME. The servings were massive - rainbow roll was easily twice what you get in a lot of places - fish was off-the-boat fresh, avocado was perfect (made me miss California...), and I have to say the cashier girl really was adorable (see earlier postings). We also ordered salmon, maguro and albacore sushi - all delicious and some of the LARGEST hunks of fish I have ever been served. I need to go back just to try some of the MANY other rolls offered on their menu. We seriously considered going back AFTER the play, but it was pretty late. I ordered pick up so I can't say anything about the in dining experience, but on a day when I was by myself and needed food to eat, I ordered the chef's special and whoa, the fish was absolutely delicious. Jeff R, You are not a real man if you cannot eat two rolls yourself. I recently went to Sushi Maki with a friend of mine (female). We are both "normal-sized" human beings, probably slightly less than normal-sized and were both able to eat two rolls EACH. I feel bad that you do not have the intestinal fortitude to experience two full rolls worth of this wonderful sushi. It is a shame. This is one of the best sushi places I have been to in Seattle. The profile says they do not have wait staff, but I am certain that if you go in and sit down, you would be able to order from your seat. The food comes quickly and is delicious. I'm pregnant so limited on my sushi choices. They had lots of tasty cooked rolls, my friend and I shared several rolls and edamame and it was only $30. Highly recommend, but note there is VERY LITTLE indoor seating! Get to go or on a nice day when you can sit outside. read more

I made the mistake of attempting to eat a piece of the Volcano Roll in one bite even though it was clearly a risky move. I dislike having to choose between my rolls possibly falling apart as I try to consume them in multiple bites or being able to breathe. This is not a good sushi joint for people like me. read more

I was somehow turned onto this place about a year ago and haven't looked back since. I visit once a week, usually on Saturday with my little boy, and we thoroughly enjoy the multitude of menu items here. Currently, my favorite is the Boston Roll (GO RED SOX), and of course I love their Rainbow Roll as well. What I really think is nice about Sushi Maki though, is the customer service and recognition that I receive every time I walk in their tiny little entrance. It's nice to feel welcomed whenever I visit an establishment, and their hard-working sushi chef/owner really values the importance of a returning customer. 3 cheers for that!! read more

A couple of facts about me before we talk about Sushi Maki: - I eat lots of sushi - I love both inexpensive and expensive sushi, from hole in the walls to fancy restaurants - I've hit about a dozen places in Seattle in the last 2 months. Now back to Sushi Maki. In my entire life, I can count on one hand the number of times I didn't finish my sushi meal because it was just that bad. After my dinner today at Sushi Maki, I need one more finger to count those times. My rolls were terrible. The tuna wasn't great, the salmon and eel were just head-shakingly bad. The shrimp filling in one of the rolls were those TINY shrimp they put in cheap salads. Even the california roll filling was bad. There was a TON of rice, which may have been the only ingredient in the rolls that wasn't awful. Ugh, I feel my stomach turning just thinking about this meal :( read more

What a nice find on a seemingly empty street. Its easy to miss this quite literal hole in the wall since its the only thing around on the block aside from the apartments and few businesses. There is enough space for maybe 4, at most 5 people to sit/stand so be prepared to do carry out. The sushi rolls were delicious and well prepared, especially the enormous chef's special. My only very mild complaint would be that its probably $$ instead of just one $, rolls are $8-14, and I suppose if you only got one it'd be pretty cheap but when they're this delicious, you're bound to get 2. read more

Absolutely delicious rolls and sashimi and GF accommodating complete with Tamari sauce available! This is literally a hole in the wall just crazy with charm. Holy god, that was a lot of sushi! I read the reviews, saw the photos, but it didn't quite ring true until I actually got my food. I am sufficiently stuffed. The spicy salmon roll was great, fresh and spicy, but I gotta say, I'm just not a fan of such huuuge rolls. Sadly, these are not the largest rolls I've ever seen, thanks to what I fondly called the Sushi Nazi Place in Chicago, but they're close. And I just don't dig pieces I can't fit in my mouth whole. The upside though is that even with multiple bites in a piece, they actually didn't fall apart - impressive! Also, PLEASE NOTE: prices have gone up from the prices in the menu photos! I paid $15 for the 5 piece combination, and it was $11 in the menu photo. Boo. Again on the upside, there was absolutely no way I needed to order that much food, so I could have a great meal with one roll and less than $10. read more

This used to be my go-to place for a quick sushi fix. It has been a while since I've gone there. Recently, I had a take out from there only to find the price for any item on the menu has been jacked up at least two bucks... Ok, two bucks for quality sushi is something I can deal with... however, the quality definitely did not live up to my expectations... First, the sushi rice is weird... they gave you ALOT of rice now but it's a bit too sticky and not very sushi-rice like... I feel like my chopsticks were hot-glued to the sushi. Oh, not to mention they did not pack/cut them very well. So it was a nightmare trying to tease apart each piece only to have them fall apart on you even before you had a chance to dip it in the soy sauce/wasabi goodness... Second... WHERE'S MY FISH?! They used to give out thicker slices for the ones lay on top of the roll and much more substantial portions in the center as well.... So my verdict is... if you LOVE rice and can live with very little fish and VERY stick rice in your sushi rolls... this might hit the sweet spot... otherwise, let's go scout out some other good sushi places, shall we? read more

I use to really like this place for inexpensive sushi take-out. The rolls are huge! But my recent experience left something to be desired. Not only did they increase the price of rolls but there was so much rice in each roll that I felt like I was having a meal of rice with the fish as a condiment. This place is superb, two small stools and that's it, I recommend it to go and call ahead as he can get busy, super nice guy he rolled up two rolls for me the dynamite and the pizza and then bakes them in the little counter top roaster oven he has there. Very good and the sunumono salad is superb too. For purists, he has Nigiri too but for those Americanized rolls, he hits it out of the park. read more

I just adore this sort of place. It's tiny - I've had closets bigger. The two employees are polite and attentive without being a bother. The food is good and sized appropriately for the relatively high cost. It always seems to be open when I am craving an emergency dose of raw fish and seaweed. Bonus tips: they have some fairly unique rolls on the menu if you dig deep enough; some of them seem to be Korean-inspired, perhaps? There are lunch specials that offer cheaper fare, but you do get less of it. There is limited outdoor seating in nicer months. read more

i don't understand why people like this place so much. the only reason for a second star is the great service. it is absolutely tiny - there is a small counter with 4 stools, that's it. hubby and i came here in search of vegetarian sushi since our fave veg sushi is 1200 miles away. we ordered 5 rolls, 4 of which had twice as much rice than is necessary, or even good. of the four, none of them tasted good. sometimes more is just more - not better. 1. Earth - various mushrooms - too "earthy," where the mushroms are so overcooked they taste like the log from whence they came 2. Garden roll - garden variety vegetable roll 3. Sun Lover - sundried tomato & avocado - as weird as it sounds, but the least bad of the bad 4. Tide - seaweed & cucumber - very fishy and just bad; i love seaweed salad so i was expecting to love this. i didn't. 5. - Chef's Special vegetarian roll - this was great. he took all the vegetables on hand and instead of wrappiing it in rice, it was rolled in a thin slice of cucumber. it was refreshing and tasty. still searching for veg sushi...i hear Blue C is good. read more

I used to live right near this tiny little restaurant. They don't have any tables, just a small bar you can sit at if you want to eat your sushi there. Personally, for me, this was a grab sushi on the way home type of place. Though they don't have a huge selection of sashimi and specialty rolls, they do traditional rolls very well. I never had one thing that was subpar from this restaurant. Just know going in that it's not fancy, and you won't be disappointed. read more
