I was craving for sushi so bad after shopping @ South Coast Plaza and this place wasn't too far from the mall. We ordered chirashi sushi deluxe ($18.50) and sushi combination deluxe ($18.50). This tiny place seemed to be pretty authentic. I could close my eyes and pretended to be @ Tsukiji market. The complimentary green tea was very green. I never got green tea that green. We got complimentary mackerel with this mysterious tiny leaf. The leaf was so small that I could barely see it but it smelled so strong-in a good way. Miso soup came next and it tasted so bland. I liked how it had both silky tofu and fried tofu but a little more miso paste please. Sushi quality was just ok but it was very cheap for the price. The server changed my tea cup to a new fresh one when she saw that it was empty. At the end of the meal we got complimentary thin sliced radish with kombu. 2 stars!!! There's a lot of unwarranted hype about this place, and I've been told by several sushi chefs about the notoriety of this place. That's why when I told them it wasn't good at all, they were surprised. That led to the interrogation about whether or not I saw an older gentleman working the sushi bar, and I said I didn't think so. This is also why the place must have came up short because the old man must have been the one keeping this place strong. He may have retired and left the business to his kids. 1. The sushi shari/gohan (rice) /su (flavoring) wasn't the level that I was expecting. 2. The saba wasn't fresh (see picture). 3. The ikura wasn't fresh (see pictures. Ikura doesn't retain it's sphere like shape when it's old. It also doesn't "pop" when you bite into it). 4. There was nothing special at all with their preparation. No pride? No kokoro? Very average place, and it's sad because this place and Kasen both have a highly believable reviews about discrimination (Brad W - review listed below). IF this is true, they're definitely not going to get my business, yet return business, and we don't need these little bitches in our country. Go back to Japan if you're discriminating because just remember, you left cuz you couldn't succeed there, so you came here. These are the issei who didn't live through the discrimination of WWII, and people like my grandparents had to be placed into a concentration camp because of discrimination and racism (Executive Order 9066). On a fair note, I do have to say that it wasn't that expensive. I think our bill with all the sushi we ordered (see the pics), plus the large Sapporo was only $67! Also, I'm sure some of the people rating the place 5 stars, probably got the same level of food we got, but they're grading on a huge naive admiration curve. As you can see from my reviews/background, I prefer only traditional nigiri sushi, and this place was probably really good at one time although service was still good from the obasan, but it's most likely it's just the food that has gone downhill over the years. Apparently this place is among the holy trifecta of sushi restaurants in OC (the others being Sushi Wasabi - best sushi EVER; and Kasen - have not tried...yet ;)) so being back in town for Christmas break, I decided it was time I gave this place a try. Conclusion? Probably the best value for sushi I have had so far. Omakase = 16+ pieces of sushi (all brought out at once in a rather impressive display) = $35 a person = poor med students (like myself) can actually afford to come here more than once a year! Sweet! As for the sushi itself, it's undoubtedly fine quality, but I'll still have the give the win to Wasabi (but not by much!). Part of the very impressive 16+ piece spread includes your standard roe, shrimp, and some mystery cooked roll, which I wish they would switch out for even one more serving of fish. Everything is absolutely delicious though, and each individual serving is actually fairly generous. Service is also fantastic: The sushi was garnished with freshly picked leaves, and the server (who I think is the sushi chef's wife) was so attentive she would switch out my tea with a fresh cup as soon as it stopped steaming (I didn't have the heart to tell her I preferred not to scald my tongue with each sip =P). So don't let the sketchy looking people loitering at the liquor store next door keep you away, Sushi Shibucho has definitely rightfully earned its place as one of the top sushi restaurants in OC! If I feel like splurging and/or have a reason to celebrate, I'd still hit up Wasabi, but if I'm in the mood for amazing sushi that won't destroy my bank account, Shibucho will definitely be the first on my list! read more

This place really needs a real waiter/waitress. They were using the dish washing lady who only knows 2 words (water/check) to host/take order/serve the food and drinks. The sushi chef will running from the sushi station to our table to tell us the market price and to see what we really wants. The sushi chef only explains to the Caucasian customers what's on the plate. They are greedy with the pickled ginger. The restaurant needs an air freshener, the place is stuffy. I ordered 2x eel until I saw on the top of the paper that they serve the sashimi per 2. So I scratched the 2, and I put 1 serving on the paper. They still serve us two servings. That eel was the market price eel. I love the taste of their eel, I don't mind to pay more, but they should just follow my order. Daikon soup came before water. Presentation looks unattractive -++If the temperature of the fish meat were a bit cooler, the texture of the fish meat would be better. It's hard to pick up sushi, because the sushi rice is loose, it felt apart when we try to pick up the sushi. I ordered everything that I normally will order, but I had a allergy reaction after dining here. My ears and arms were itchy. Mr.Q seems okay, so I'm not so sure what went wrong, perhaps normally I always drink hot sake when I eat sashimi and today I got water with charcoal dirt inside. I dine here before with some hot sake, back then I was fine. I'm not so sure whether it is the quality of the fish meat or I should have some sake to kill the bacteria. After we left the place, I saw they have a Groupon deal. We didn't know that and so we paid for the full price. P.S if you want to prevent people outside from using the toilet in the restaurant, you should put a note outside, such as "only the customers can use the toilet". Instead of leaving the sushi station and went to the toilet, knocking on the door when people is already in the toilet and making a big scene for people who want to use the toilet. Then came back to sushi station. It was very entertaining to see people desperately lying to pee inside your toilet, but there was a 2 minute awkward silence after the entire scene. In fact, I do agree with others this is a very quiant, homey feel sushi joint. It seems like this place is run by family members, but uncertain. Can imagine how packed this will be during weekend. I ordered the Omakase sushi at the bar. It was served piece by piece. I mentioned that I want more "traditional" flair, which he did not disappoint me with. I was presented with fresh fishes from tuna, salmon, real tai (red snapper) with skin, orange clam, shrimp, sea urchin, mackerel, halibut, pike, eel, etc. The quality of the fish were very solid. I feel I am getting a very good quality fish for the price that was charging. Its definitely one of the better sushi joints in the area. This place, however, is lack of exotic/unique fish. Its more on the safe side, but then, that's at chef's discretion since they are very clear to keeping this a family-style sushi joint. I think some people get offended because they think sushi joints should offer cocktails, serve spider roll or philidelphia rolls. This is more like a traditional sushi joint unlike those "Asian/Japanese Fusions" or Korean owned sushi joint that will create creative rolls. However, this is definitely a place to visit if you are in the area and serious about eating sushi. If you sit at the table, you can also order Omakase set, which is beautifully presented and delicious to eat too. This is the first time I experienced omakase so I'm not as well versed in what's expected, but I do know what I expect of my sushi. Sushi Shibucho delivers on presenting a fresh selection of fish & seafood and warm service from the owner's wife (I think). She always kept our tea hot and cleared away our plates quickly. Our chef was the owner's son and was a man of few words it seemed. However, he seemed to open up much more when a Japanese speaking couple sat next to us. Maybe he's hoping the food will just speak for it's damn self. Well, it sure did. The first bite nearly brought me to tears as I thought my left frontal lobe had burst from the excessive wasabi. I definitely was not expecting THAT much, but as the meal progressed I learned to diffuse the heat by preventing the wasabi from spreading with each bite. I thought the meal was great but felt uncomfortable the whole time. Whether it was my noob stat, my inability to speak Japanese or maybe it's just how Shibucho rolls with their wasabi, I don't think I will be a repeat customer. So note for all the non japanese speaking, this place is next to the In and Out, best landmark to use, to find this spot. The unagi was so good we ordered more, it melted in my mouth and it wasn't that kind of dense dry unagi. I usually don't even order unagi because I get full way too fast eating it. My date wanted it. The salmon skin roll was YUMMMMO! I love love loooooove salmon skin, the best part to me. I believe when sushi restaurant gets mostly either 5 stars or 1 star, I think it's a good sign of the authentic sushi restaurant because most of one star is coming from ignorant. I think Shibucho is the best sushi in Orange county. They always have best quality fish and very tasty side dishes that perfectly go with quality sake. I love when they give me 2 different part or kind of the same fish. I can compare different taste. For example, different type of amaebi, snapper. I don't think not many places serve like that. Sushi chefs are friendly, but my favorite is Okamisan, the server. She is very sweet. I feel comfortable going there even though it's a high-end sushi restaurant. Sat down with the gf, ordered omakase and told the chef we liked eel so he delivered us some bomb ass eel. Chef was friendly, attentive and skilled. He grilled it in two different ways and gave us a nigiri piece as well. Sometimes I still dream about the eel I ate here. The chef was kind enough to suggest some things and we were very satisfied with all the choices. Great service and great sushi. Tonight (our second time) we walk in through the door and the chef takes one look at us and said "we don't do rolls here." This place is the real deal if you want actual good, authentic sushi. I mean, they make their own soy sauce - it's so good, I wish they packaged it and sold it separately to take home! I went on a Thursday night which wasn't too busy, so it was a quiet ambiance with some soft music playing from a stereo I'm assuming is originating from the kitchen. Still, it's not distracting at all and the staff is all very friendly and attentive. The fish is some of the freshest I've ever tasted. For example: salmon. Most places, salmon is just that side thing that's "okay". Here, you can taste how much care they put into preparing it! It's like a completely different fish, and now I doubt I can have salmon anywhere else. It's not just the salmon, either. I usually don't like squid because the texture is usually "squeaky" (for lack of a better term) when other places prepare it, but here it's served very smooth and it's not like chewing a rubber dog toy. (Not that I have experience with that - it's just how I imagine a rubber dog toy would taste after being chewed on by a canine.) The nice thing is that the glass containing the variety of fish isn't frosted, so you can see the fish clearly (and the colors are very vibrant, telling you how fresh the fish is) and you can see how the chef prepares the sushi. I even had a piece with a salted cherry blossom flower on top of it! The presentation is simply to die for. They do have rolls in the form of battera (pressed Japanese mackerel) and futomaki, but obviously they don't have the Americanized stuff (because, frankly, most rolls are just California rolls with some leftover fish on top) - expecting them to serve the popular sushi rolls most places serve is like walking into a high class steak house and asking for a Big Mac. In other words, don't do it - you'll want the very best this place has to offer, because it blows its competition out of the water. Long story short, sushi enthusiasts will do themselves a favor by coming in here and asking for the newest shipment - you won't be able to have low standards for sushi anymore after trying the best. read more

This is a pure, hardcore Japanese sushi place. Everything is prepared by master sushi chef using nothing but the best fish and technique. It's amazing just to watch his knife skill. There's nothing crazy here like dynamite or philly rolls. If these are your idea of a sushi, you haven't had authentic sushi. We sat at the counter around 6:30 and didn't leave until 9:30. If you're at the counter the chef prepares his special items throughout the night. You never quite know what you're going to get but that's part of the fun. This place is so unassuming, in a little plaza, but this is LEGIT authentic sushi. I came here for lunch based on a friends' recommendation and I was not disappointed. They are only open for lunch 12-2pm on Wed-Friday, so keep that in mind. The place is really small, a 8 person sushi bar and 3 tables that seat ~4 ppl each. Came in around 1:30 the sushi bar was relatively full 6/8 seats were occupied, but only 1/3 tables were occupied. I sat down at the sushi bar, to enjoy the view. Watching the sushi chefs work is like art itself. My friend tells me this is a mom & pop establishment, the 2 Japanese sushi chefs are father and son, along with the mom as the hostess/waitress. First I was served some piping hot green tea and some dish of pickled vegetable mixture, I'm not sure what it was but it tasted good. The sushi chef was very traditional and spoke Japanese which was awesome because my boyfriend also speaks the language. He was very funny and had us both cracking up the entire time. We both did omakase and the fish was just incredible. We had everything from halibut, mackerel, and even squid imported from Japan. Very simple presentation but full of flavor. Decided not to have nigiri sushi. Not the same when you order a plate of sushi combination. Comments. 1. They don't have a waitress that understands Japanese food, she is efficient but no presence to seat or take orders. Just handed me a piece of paper and pen to fill in. 2. Water is not filtered well. Heavy rice...Not enough rice vinegar. The fish on was ok. rice preparation is the basic measure of good sushi. 4. Ordered negi toro. But tekka maki ..but what I received was badly made tekka ..just maguro and rice rolled. $10.00. I was shocked...price was half of my chirashi and badly made. In Japan you could not serve like this. Sorry.. Because waitress not trained to understand Japanese food. Did not ask whether I wanted Japanese tea..older Latin lady. I will drive to Koi sushi or Shunka sushi for my sushi fix.
