I've stopped by Sushi Umi a few times while in the area for work meetings, and it's become my go-to lunch spot. I always get the salmon teriyaki and vegetables bento box--it's the perfect lunch break option. The salmon is flavorful, the veggies are fresh, and the portions are just right without being heavy. The service here is consistently great--friendly, fast, and they're always happy to explain anything on the menu if you're unsure. It makes the whole experience easy, especially when you're short on time between meetings. The space itself is clean, bright, and has a calm, inviting vibe. It's a nice little pause in the day when everything else feels rushed. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area and want something tasty and reliable.

The veggie lovers sushi plate was fantastic, it was the best I've ever had. The ambiance and service were fine, though the bugs on the patio were annoying.

Service was great! Very attentive first thing we walked in and always updated us the wait time. I just got a salmon sushi roll because the pricing is a bit pricey than usual. It's really good, fresh sushi! With a lot of sushi spots in the DMV area, I wouldn't say this is my go-to spot.

Cozy spot in McLean area besides ARCHER hotel. Parking is tricky in a sense that there's only street parking. You have to pay by parking in one of the garages. Food quality is excellent hence the higher than usual price. I had the umi box set for $36.It had salmon, tuna, fried oysters,.scallops, eel and fried fish..smallish portions over rice. Enjoyed my experience. Service is attentive and friendly.

Can not say enough good things about this place! I indulged in the freshest nigiri. Salmon, yellowtail, amber jack... I could not get enough. Chef Boo was amazing making suggestions based on what I liked. I felt very taken care of the whole time I was there. It's a smaller restaurant but provides just the right atmosphere to make it feel comfy. I would recommend this place over and over again.

3.5 stars. Good but very pricey. Had a quick dinner here but shared the taste of umi and the takoyaki appetizer. That was enough for two people but you don't leave feeling super stuffed. I like how they've thought of the little details. For instance mixing imitation crab with the rice. Which is tasty. Or super fresh uni. Or having the fish pressed into a little heart. Like having a cell phone holder for the "window seats" but again, for the food quality, and amount, it is a little pricey. I get the location and food costs. The food was fresh, well prepared, and I would dine here again but not regularly .

Parking is really limited here. My friend and I stopped by for dinner yesterday at around 5:30 PM and all ~10 spots were taken so we had to park a few blocks away. Not the most convenient for sure. But at least it is metro accessible! The kiss and ride is right outside of the restaurant. Service was friendly and we always had enough water. But the pricing here is very expensive, which is typical Tysons. Unless you're only eating a single maki roll (which is less than a snack), you'll probably be paying over 25 for an entree. INFINITE TRIO DON - 37 Each rice bowl comes with 4 pieces of tuna, 4 pieces of salmon and 4 pieces of yellowtail. I don't normally like tuna too much but it's quite fresh here. Yellowtail here was good but not the best. Salmon is always delicious. The sushi rice was a bit too dry as it easily fell apart. Overall, it's good but kind of steep to be paying so much for a casual dinner. The bowl they served it in was interesting. Never seen anything of that shape or color, lol. Sushi Umi is definitely not a casual meal. Be prepared to shell out 40-50 dollars per person after tax and tip.

Good sushi, conveniently located right next to McLean metro station (parking is hard to find). The sushi was a bit pricey, wish there were more vegetarian options, and sadly no outdoor seating. The indoor seating is a bit cozy, no space for strollers or large groups. Hubby and I ordered a feast! Hubby got the $23 Roll Combo with 3 sushi rolls - California, Salmon & Avocado, and Tuna & Avocado. He enjoyed the sushi rice and all 3 rolls. The Umi Tempura with crispy fritters of sweet potato, carrots, onions, and asparagus was fun to try, but quite dense with veggies heavily coated in thick tempura batter. After a few pieces, I started getting full. Next time, I would skip it to save my room for the sushi. The vegetarian Yam Tempura roll with the cream cheese didn't quite blend well. I would opt for the roll without the cream cheese. The Seaweed Salad was tasty and a good portion. The sparkling Choya plum wine was very sweet and tastes like Moscato wine. I wish there were more vegetarian rolls and dishes available, beyond the standard avocado and cucumber and the Yam Tempura roll. As another Yelper mentioned, it's pricey. We spent $90 on our meal and be prepared to spend $40- $50 per person especially if you order a drink and 2-3 rolls or apps.

Top: chirashi deluxe Bottom: omakase sampler
    Peiling C.

First time dining at sushi umi and had a great experience! We had to get their sashimi sampler like many of the other diners there. It was $78 for 9 different samples of chef's choice cuts. Besides the sweet shrimp(served with uni), fried mackerel and fried wagyu, each type had 3 slices. I think that is a reasonable price for what you're getting. There's plenty of rice with the sampler too. The chirashi deluxe was $48. Larger portion : probably 15 pieces plus uni. I only wish there was more seaweed to pair. Between 2 girls, we couldn't finish it and brought home a carefully packaged to-go container. The absolute can't miss item: their house wasabi. It is less overpowering than normal wasabi so you put more on your fish. They give you regular wasabi to compare because they know which is superior. Their house soy sauce is less salty and more umami too. The service was excellent. The sweet lady saw that the sun was in my sister's eye and got on top of the chair to help pull the shades down. All the servers were super attentive. Ambiance is bright and casual. They encourage solo dining too with the phone stands provided. Like many others have said, parking is tough. Limited free street parking. We found parking on S. Dartford Drive. Valet available at the hotel around the corner.

The environment and the food is very good. It is also pretty expensive. The waitress is extremely friendly and fun. Overall, restaurant wises, I love this place. However, it is quite confusing for the first-time visitor to find the parking place. Here are your two options: 1. Valet parking at the hotel where the restaurant is located. It will cost you $10 plus tips; 2. Public parking at the apartment complex right across the street, and it will cost you about $6 for 2 hours. The lunch menu and the dinner menu is a bit different. I was there for dinner in the weekend, the taste of umi is $79.00. We ordered the Chirashi Deluxe ($48), Taste of Umi ($79) Sake Don ($37). All really really good.

This is a new, upscale Japanese place that opened up. Don't let the exterior fool you - it's nicer inside than you would expect and great ambiance. There isn't really parking here so you will have to park on the street. For the food -- I ordered take out the first time here and thought it was a 5/5. When I dined in a second time, I would say the food is a 4. Their dinner menu is only 2 pages and the dishes were more on the expensive side. I asked for their special rolls paper menu which is more similar to the regular sushi rolls you find at restaurants. I ordered the Dragon Roll again which was good - unconventional from other Dragon rolls since it has salmon and tuna inside in addition to eel/avocado. There is also asparagus which I wasn't the biggest fan of. My friend got the fried eel and cream cheese (Vegas roll) which she enjoyed. I would recommend if you don't like raw fish, since she doesn't normally have sushi.

    Sharon H.

To be honest, I thought this place was a front for the longest time since it was empty all the time. Overall, the food is okay in terms of fish quality. The salmon is vibrant and their takeout is good. I will say though that at this price point and for what you get, it's not really worth it. The interior is very minimalistic and casual, with a bar at the front where the chefs prepare the rolls. It's okay for a quick lunch.

Avocado in every single roll, so basically they were all horrible. What kind of sushi place would add unripe avocados to their rolls? It's not like avocados are cheap, those little f***ers are a big reason why sushi is expensive, I would hope they are at least edible. I am so angry I just spent so much money for not even ONE roll to be edible, and not just the money, took them close to 40 minutes to get here, now everything else is closed and we are stuck with this. I've never been to the actual location, so I can't speak on the ambiance, but I image they are just as careless. My adventurous eater and I tried out Sushi Koji after rugby yesterday. It was a real treat. Our…read moreserver was very helpful in helping us decide what to get, and we thought we would try sashimi (after reading reviews about the place) as well as noodles. Fellow Yelpers did not steer us wrong! We ordered Otoro (fatty tuna) and sake belly (salmon belly) sashimi, listed as 3 pieces each. We also ordered tempura udon, a shrimp tempura roll*, takoyaki, and mentaiko butter udon (off the specials menu). Let me begin by saying the space is clean, roomy, and well-decorated. We enjoyed looking at the artwork and figurines, which included anime figures that we recognized. There were many tables, and though they may be physically close together, there is enough separation to be comfortable without being on top of each other or feeling cramped. There was a family of five that was seated next to us partway through the meal, and I never felt like the noise level changed or that we suddenly felt as if there were more people around. The takoyaki came out covered in bonito flakes. The sauce was a perfect blend of tempered spicy mayo as my adventurous eater enjoyed it without being overwhelmed by heat. The bites were well-sized as not to be too large, but we were able to bite in without burning our tongues our with the right balance of batter and octopus, and we both enjoyed it greatly. The sashimi came out with the shrimp tempura roll on a beautifully arranged boat - 4 pieces each! We each tried two pieces of otoro and sake belly, and the pieces just melted into our mouth. The otoro was garnished with what appeared to be hint of wasabi and maybe chopped jalapeño, which was too much for my adventurous eater to try, so I gently scraped it off. Neither of us were able to taste anything but the well-chosen slices of fatty tuna, which were a hit. We then tried the sake belly which were garnished with a sliver of fried garlic and garlic paste. Again, I scraped it off for the adventurous eater, who then raved about how delicious it was! I tried it with the garlic and agreed. The garlic was perfectly fried, and was the right amount not to overwhelm the delicate buttery texture and flavor of the salmon belly. Although, I will admit - while it's a nice flavor to add, the sashimi itself didn't need anything to be added. The tempura udon came out, with perfectly battered pieces - 2 shrimp, an asparagus, an onion ring, a slice of sweet potato, and a slice of eggplant. My adventurous eater attacked the shrimp while I munched on veggies. The batter was crispy, light, and not greasy. My mentaiko butter udon came out and I am so glad I ordered it! There was a little nest of noodles, with two halves of a soft-boiled egg, and plenty of creamy sauce. The menu described the dish as buttery and umami and it did not deceive. The udon was perfectly chewy and slurpable, coated with delicious creamy sauce. I debating mixing in the eggs because they looked so perfect, so I dipped one half in the sauce instead and ate that whole, before mixing in the other half into my bowl. Even my adventurous eater tried a little bit of my udon and agreed that it was delicious! Not having had mentaiko butter before, I looked it up before writing this review. The dish is described as being a spicy-fish roe butter sauce, but what we are talking about is a very mild heat. The dish was warming, tasty, and very comforting. It was also surprisingly light considering the buttery richness of the flavors. I finished every last bit of the noodles in my bowl and drank the rest of the sauce, with all the fish roe stirred in. I may have also commented a couple of times on how phenomenal the dish was. That was when our server shared that it was the first day it had been on the menu, so they were looking for feedback. I would say that the dish alone is worth checking out, but I feel like you will keep coming back due to the quality of everything else. I think this place is a gem and I will definitely look for excuses to return to Oakton to eat there again. Between the friendly service, the cheerful ambiance, and the amazing food, this is hitting all the right notes! * My adventurous eater filled up on everything else before even getting to the shrimp tempura roll, so we ended up packing up the rest of the udon and the shrimp tempura roll to bring home. Due to life, the roll never made it into the fridge, so we tragically had to toss it without trying it. I wish I could tell you how it was, but I can say the roll was beautifully formed and served and looked absolutely delicious. This is where I wish I had taken pictures of everything.

I initially thought it would be mostly rolls, but it leaned more toward nigiri. That said, everything was super fresh and really well prepared, so no complaints there. I recently started eating seafood again after years of avoiding it, so I have been easing into it, and this was actually a really good place to do that. The fish tasted fresh, clean, and not overly fishy, which made it a lot easier to enjoy. The Osaka roll, which our server recommended, was really good, but my favorite was definitely the paradise roll from the sushi boat. Anything with shrimp tempura is a win for me, and this one hit the spot. The ambiance is cute, cozy, and on the smaller side, which made the whole experience feel more quiet and intimate. It did not feel rushed at all, which I appreciated, especially since we were breaking our fast. We ended up taking a lot of food to go because the portions were so generous, and surprisingly, everything still tasted fresh and delicious even the next two days. The only downside is that it is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, portions, and overall experience helped justify it. Overall, great quality sushi, generous portions, and a calm, intimate vibe. Definitely a spot I would come back to, especially if I am in the mood for fresh sushi without a loud or hectic atmosphere.

The scallion pancakes and soup dumplings are legitimately all-star -- not afterthoughts, not filler. One pro tip: pay attention to the rotating specials once you've locked in your favorites. And you will have favorites. Probably after visit one. Casual setting, family-friendly vibe, top-tier food. Yu Noodle earns a permanent spot on the short list.
