This place is my all time favorite beside the sushi back home in Hawaii. I grow up eating sushi in Hawaii and in Osaka when visit Cusin. I have been here since I was attending university and when the Dad was ruining the restaurant and the mom was the cashier. There are few changes since the kids took over 1) The food was price accordingly and it's a fair against the fish market value 2) Server and Service overall was ok. Sometime we experience in adequate service but before I am a semi regular I let it slide. ( deduct point) 3) Food quality use to be 100% fresh but lately I experience a 10% decrease in the quality of the food. Overall is still ok. ( deduct point) 4) Taste of the food rely on the quality of the food so it have a ripple effect. ( deduct point) 5) Decor use to be awesome then it start to run down a little. But I still like it. This place have drop 10% overall in very thing. But still above average over other sushi place. If you have a date or a family get together, this is still a place to go. Sushi Zono used to be a family favorite, even though it's way in the back of that lot...however my most recent visit was rather unimpressive. The bro and I opted for the dinner for two which included miso soup, salad, chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, gyoza, tempura, and green tea ice cream. Even though we couldn't finish all the food, it still seemed like not too much food in comparison to what we used to get. In addition, the food was pretty average. Client/Good Friend Chris G. brought me to Sushi Zono. I live closer to Napa area and don't know the area well enough for good sushi. My friend has a very successful financial planning practice in Los Gatos and said let take a drive to an outstanding sushi place. He wasn't joking! We sat at the sushi bar at around 12:30 and 2 hours later and a $260 bill (we both are big rock solid guys who can throw down a ton of sushi so don't let the bill scare you away). We left there flipping loving life. Our chef just kept bringing us there best nigiri and it was amazing. You name it we had had. Everything from Mackerel, blue fin, toro, salmon, hamachi and more. I go here as it's close by, but the past experience is likely to send me elsewhere. Food is generally good. Service is atrocious. It never used to be this bad. Our table waited for our food for over an hour, and a meal was completely missed, leaving one of our group without any food. To top it off they have added a service charge of 20% which they did not disclose, and then prompted us for an additional tip. Hopefully this is a one time occurrence and they pick up their game - they used to be so much better than this. Disappointed. read more

It's good. Not gourmet but good!+ The rolls that are topped with fish or crunchy are quite tasty! The beef teriyaki is moist and fresh and really good! The service is good.The location is all about locals and regulars! The soup is so so the salad small but good when they add more than just lettuce and slivers of carrot. This place is cozy,a date kind of place and tucked away in a strip mall with ethnicity choices to consider as well! :) A foodie kind of center in that respect. It's not that easy to find as you could cruise by if your not careful. This is why i would say it has lots of repeat but local customers! For Valentine's Day dinner, we decided to go here with our son. We are very experienced with sushi after routine business travel to Japan for more than 20 years. For those who have not had the experience, the "really good" sushi restaurants your friends and family tell you about or take you to in the US...is roughly equivalent to sushi at a 7-11 in Tokyo. It sounds crazy, but it is a fact. There was one place in Los Gatos (Sushi on the Run) that had any respect as a real sushi restaurant outside of Japan. This review is relative to sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, not in comparison to our experiences in Japan. Setting up reservations was super easy. They were not booked solid. Very courteous on the phone. When we arrived about 2-3 minutes late, and there were several couples waiting at the entrance to be seated, they didn't even hesitate to take us right to our table. So far, so good. However, there were four observations that should've tipped us off that we were going to be disappointed with Sushi Zono. First, walking past the sushi bar, the Itamae (sushi chef) was a younger man, wearing a trucker's ball-cap. Second, the moment we sat down, the waitress asked if we were ready to order. Third, the tables were mostly empty (with at least 6 couples waiting at the front door...to be seated). Last, our waitress left our table and went behind the sushi bar to prepare sushi. It was about 20 minutes later, another waitress stopped at our table and we ordered our drinks. The moment we ordered the drinks, she took off, and we didn't get to order the food. Another 15 minutes passed before our water and the wrong drink for our son showed up. We ordered sake, but they only brought the cups. Before we could tell her that she brought the wrong drink, she took off. That was the theme of the night. The moment they come to the table, the server would try to leave within 5-10 seconds. You couldn't ask for anything before they turned around and took off. Being about 30-40 minutes into our evening, we finally ordered our dinner. Steak teriyaki and some ebi for our son. Moriawase sashimi (mixed fish), two maki rolls and some saba and hamachi belly nigiri. Most of the places in the US love to drench sushi rolls with creamy and terrible sauces. When you ask for no sauce, or sauce on the side, the Itamae knows that the quality of his fish and preparation training is on display. They can't give you scraps of fish and try to hide it with sauce. You'll expect to see the best presentation and highest quality fish they have in the restaurant. We made it clear to the waitress that we didn't want any sauce and had her repeat it to us (because she could barely pay attention to what we were ordering...it was not loud in the restaurant at all either). Our son's food came out in about 15 minutes. Very simple plate (not a bento box) and not very impressive. He did say that the food tasted good, but he wound up using a fair amount of soy sauce because they were pretty thin on the teriyaki with the rice. About 20 minutes later (1 hour and 45 minutes-ish into our evening at Sushi Zono), our maki and nigiri showed up, but not the Moriawase nor our sake...still. Huge disappointment when the rolls and nigiri had their house sauce all over it. The rolls were not uniformly cut & everything was packed with avocado. There was 2 or 3:1 ratio of avocado to fish in all the rolls...including the hand rolls. We finally got the waitress to stay at our table for about 1 minute so we could let her know that we still needed our son's correct drink, our Moriawase and a service setting for me (we had asked 2 other times). Eventually our sashimi showed up and it was $30 for 12 pieces of generic fish (toro, hamachi, tai, hirame). We commented how unimpressed we were & the lack of service quality to the couple sitting across from us. They acknowledged the same experience and disappointment to us as well. They were seated for about 10 minutes prior to our arrival and we all left at the same time. Some qualifiers. The restaurant was clean and the seating is nice. The first waitress was nice, even though we never saw her after she went behind the sushi bar. It was Valentine's Day and we were sure that they were short staffed one or two real Itamaes (without trucker hats) and at least 3-4 servers. If they had better organization with the front-of-the-house, I'm sure everyone wouldn't have felt rushed and put out low quality food and turn tables in less than 3 hours. Apologize for the lack of pics. The food was so unimpressive and we were fairly disappointed at our overall experience. Will not be going back to try again. If we like a place, we usually will go a second time to see if they are consistent. This one doesn't warrant a second look. At $140 for three people, this was not a 'reasonably priced-high quality' sushi restaurant as mentioned in other reviews. read more

We honestly visit very few other sushi places because we end up disappointed with a big bill. Actually, to be honest, we end up just skipping sushi altogether if we can't make it to Zono. I've been coming to this restaurant for years now. When I would first come I was picky, luckily there was a great option for chicken teriyaki bento boxes. Now that my taste pallet has matured I can enjoy much of the fresh sushi that is available. When I come in on Friday I can get seated with 4 in a reasonable amount of time. For seating, the bar is open, there is horigotatsu seating in the back, as well as benches, and regular tables which can also be used to accommodate larger groups. There seems to always be specials that are coming in which is where I typically look first for new/seasonal dishes. From there I'll usually order as many roll plates as there are people that i'm with. The rolls are always fresh never smelly. Miso soup and salad comes with large groups, but always make a excellent appetizer. read more

The fish quality is soo good because of their picky owner which is a good thing since it shows that he only wants whats best for his customers and that he knows his stuff. Located in the back corner of a plaza is this place. A friend of my suggested this place which is always good because going to the same sushi places gets too routinely after a while. There are sitting booths, tables, or the bar to sit down to enjoy your meal and watch whatever is on tv. The staff seemed friendly and service was pretty quick and efficient. As for the rolls: Art - I love how it's very hard to notice the scallop, but it definitely makes its presence known when you take a bite into the roll. There was also just the right amount of spice in the spicy sauce. Hong - I'm a huge fan of spicy stuff, and this roll has the right amount of spice to give it the extra kick without being too overwhelming. The shrimp tempura was cooked well and the portions were solid. Freedom - Reminded me a lot of a Philadelphia roll (which I love), but there was a lot more cream cheese than I would like. Besides that, it was like a standard philly roll with avocado on top. If this was based on the food, this would easily be 4 stars. However, once we got our food, it seemed like the staff didn't really give a damn about us anymore. Even as we were leaving, we weren't acknowledged. Hands down, Sushizono has been my favorite sushi-ya for me since I moved here in the Bay Area. Sushi is very fresh and they don't skimp on sushi- meaning that sashimi is bigger (and thicker) than the rice portion. If you go there, sit at the counter and enjoy the conversation with the chef. Once they get to know you they will make some special dish of the day. It is not a cheap sushi, but you will get what you paid for! read more

Chirashi Chronicles #11 **3.5 Stars** After almost 3 years from my last visit, I decided to return to Sushi Zono for some chirashi. I remember being impressed my first visit by the quality and cut of the nigiri and thought the chirashi would be another way to test the establishment. The other choices in the area are TGI Sushi, which clearly is more a roll place, and Michi Sushi, which I think is also more a roll place and overpriced compared to the competition. I decided to opt for the special chirashi at $23 over the regular chirashi at $16. I think it was a good choice. The order included a complimentary salad, miso soup, and also hot tea. When the bowl came out, I was impressed with the variety as well as some very good cuts: Ikura - very generous portion of ikura Sake - I believe a higher quality smoked salmon piece was included Maguro - very good Ebi - usually prefer the amaebi for the higher price Tamago - nice size egg piece Hamachi - fresh selection of yellowtail Overall, I considered it an above average chirashi and thought the price was reasonable. A sloppy sushi restaurant in Campbell. Came here on a Saturday night, there were only few tables and 3-4 people sitting at the sushi bar. We have to wait 10 minutes for water, waitress never came to take our order, I had to go to the front no ask to order. What's more pathetic: we had to wait 30-35 minutes for our sushi and sashimi dinner. Sushi chef and waitress just stand there and chatting. I tried to cancel our order but just then the waitress says our order is ready. Our food has just been sitting there for who knows how long. So much for the service, how about the food? Sashimi dinner pieces were unbelievably small, more like half a piece of other sushi places. For $30 on 12 tiny small pieces of sashimi, also not cut through ( see picture). We felt like we got a ripe off tonight for $106 spent on bad sushi, small pieces of sashimi and watching sushi chef and wait staff chatting. We've been going to Sushi Zono since it was Nakagawa's in '83. The food is always top notch and the fish is flavorful. I think they have the best gyoza anywhere. The tempura is good, not too greasy, and I like the batter. My only negative (and the reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars) is because the service can occasionally be spotty. When you sit tatami in the back, you sometimes get forgotten completely and have to chase down someone for refills. This doesn't happen often, but it has happened more than once. When the service is good, it's GREAT. I miss all the servers from over the years....Terri, Yuen. The bento boxes are really good, and they don't give the cheap cuts of chicken or beef for the teriyaki either. I think the soup broth is very flavorful and can eat huge amounts of their salad. It's the same dressing since day one. It's a tangy, sesamey dressing. Now I'm hungry thinking about it. They're good with kids but they don't provide crayons or anything, so you have to bring their entertainment. They're great for large parties. We've gone with 14 people. He really picks out good quality fish and he's a fun guy to talk to :) It's been awhile since I've sat at a sushi bar in awhile, and it was a fun and delicious experience. My friend and I pretty much winged it and asked him to give us anything good that day, and we were not disappointed! While we were noshing away our food, Haru actually told us why he named is Sushi Zono. Growing up in Japan, Haru would take his then girlfriend out to eat at a place called Sushi Zono. He admired the sushi chef so much, he named his own sushi restaurant after his! Well, that's the cliffnoted version, so if you're interested in the details, that's something interesting to talk about with him. Anyway, service here is good. Ive so far only recorded 40+ check-in's at the time of the review which is an understatement. 5 stars for being pretty much the only REAL japanese restaurant in the south bay (if you exclude the izakaya spots). There is a japanese saying that you can tell if a japanese restaurant is good based on their tamago(egg) and saba and udon! Granted my experiences here are 90% at the sushi bar, the saba and tamago are great. But seriously, the bar is where its at! There is a 15 dollar minimum at bar but you'll easily spend that after 2-3 plates of sushi with a beer. Plus you get soup and salad compliments of the chef. Whenever i go, I always get the sashimi dinner plate for 1-2 people which fills me up plenty. The salmon with the SUPER thinly sliced lemons is a must.. muy bueno!!!! The fish is always fresh to death and never disappoints. GET HARU's(chef) scallops if youre ballinn or the ART roll if youre feelin cheap :) Dinner usually costs me and my friend $35-40 a person. Sometimes i ball out and eat 70 just by myself lol. The biggest underdog at this restaurant is the UDON! his udon is something i have never had anywhere else. the chef explained to me that he imports his noodles from the most expensive(worth it) vendor in japan. I believe it cuz the noodles are soo chewy and soft. This might be an overstatement but i think the noodles are better than orenchi's imho. but dont take my word for it! try it! Zono is also a great place to drink if you and your friends wanna sit back and enjoy nice sake. Haru has the works when it comes of alcohol. he's got a plethora of sake selection: dry, smooth, unfiltered, you name it!!! He even has DRAFT sake which is unseen at any japanese restaurant ive been at. FYI: he only has Kirin on tap. As for the service, I know alot of people complain here on Yelp but i honestly really like the service but maybe thats cuz im biased and been coming here for many years. It's so sad to see a place that was once in glory days go to shambles. The rude waitress with her snide remarks just ruins the place. Her poor service and remarks alone caused me to stop going. I even witnessed her and the owner get into fights. They would be yelling and at each other. It's sad to know he still has kept her. She told me she came on a work Visa to work for the restaurant so she could get into America. Her words. She just randomly told me. Uuumm, okay? I loved it so much more when the parents (the ones who originally started the restaurant) were operating the business. They left it to their son who then in turn brought along this piece of work waitress and I haven't been back since 8 years ago. The best years were from 1994 to 2010 and yet I still visited from time to time. Now I go to Ginza Sushi in San Jose and it's way way better. The food is just as good and there isn't a rude waitress or waiter in sight. I had so many memories and great times at Sushi Zono (1994 to 2010) but that ended when the parents left. I running slow they usually give you edamame for free...sushi can be a little on the pricey side. They also have shiso leaf which is a huge plus for me as not all Japanese places have it. read more

Zono, so ono! I know some pretty hardcore Zono fans, who rave about their sushi all the time. Finally after trying it, I have to say it's pretty good. It's not fancy, but I couldn't tell if the fish was fresh. The one roll I remember getting is the Hong Roll -- it had some kick, which was nice. But a couple of the rolls were so sauced up, you couldn't tell if it was fish jello wrapped up in there. They were tasty though. Tips: Good sushi and good value. read more
