The lunch buffet feels a little more authentic than some of the others around this area, reasonably priced. I typically go for dinner about once a week. The prices are on par but the quality of the food is outstanding. I like sitting at the tables though, the booths are really kind of awful. I have tried Swagat more than a couple of times for their lunch buffets and have tried their dinner on one occassion. Their lunch buffet gets crowded pretty soon because of its close proximity to several Intel campuses nearby. Its better to get in early. My biggest gripe is their arrangement of the buffet food spread in a circle where you get into a gridlock before you get your food on your plate and get out :) The food in the buffet is pretty good and they have one of the fried appetizers, a soup, Naan, 1 or 2 chicken curry dishes, a goat dish and some vegetarian curry and dishes which keeps changing. Their desserts also taste pretty good esp. the Mango Malai which is too good to pass and is a must try. read more

I give this place low stars because, of the experience, not the food. I have always liked the food. This was my first time at the Hillsboro branch, and might not go back. We ordered some apps., and our apps. came out with crusty dirty plates. It was really gross because it was actually dirty plates from other customers, not from the wash room. Next my husband and I both had an entree. I had the tikka masala and asked for it spicey, but instead mine came out mild and his came out super spicey. A little bit of a shocker when he took a bite. Went for their weekday lunch buffet after looking up Indian restaurants on yelp. Was starving and this place seemed like the best one in a 5-mile radius. Parking was easy to find - street parking. Disgusted... I have eaten at Swagat before and was pleased with the food. Tonight unfortunately was not the case. I've never ordered the tandoori chicken before tonight and I can only say "what in the hell is wrong with this shit"!! The chicken was so dry and so hard that my wife couldn't push a fork into it. The tikka masala was good as usual, however I didn't get to enjoy much of it due to wanting to share some food with my famished wife! That dry chicken dish makes me never want to eat there again!! I know that that sounds a bit harsh for one bad dish, however it was really really extremely horrible. The price was $50 total for the meal and only 3 items purchased for that price from what's supposed to be a reputable quality restaurant this was such a disgusting delivery of chicken! I went here today for lunch and don't regret it. They have a good variety of food and the they had this like deep fried potato thing that I have not had in any of the other 3 Indian buffets i have been to in the hillsboro area , can't remember the name of it but they were super good! They only had one choice for fresh salad so that was kind of dissapointing and the reason I'm not giving this place a 5 star is because the food was cold idk if it because of the pots the food is in but it was not even warm! Also nan bread was hard but I asked the waitress if they could put out new and they did so quickly . I also had a dessert here I have not had in any other Indian buffet I think it was called mango curry, it was super sweet and super delicious. Simply amazing. Great curries, great tandoori. All the meats are succulent and juicy. I even liked the curried broccoli. My wife and I love to eat here. We finally made it in for the lunch buffet which we will be back for. The staff is friendly too. Lots of people from India eat here as well. Meh. I love Indian food typically but this one falls a bit short when it comes to taste. The service was about what you would for a buffet that was closing in 50 mins from when we got there. The host gave brief hello, showed us to our seats, took drink orders and then served them to us promptly, but we never saw anyone else ever come by to refill beverages. Plates were cleared pretty regularly, which was good. What wasn't so good was the food itself. Aside from the naan being picked over and popular dishes being low (which we weren't surprised by), some of these items were less than savory. The chicken tikka masala was odd. It had almost a boxed mac-n-cheese flavor to the sauce. The aloo gobi was pretty good as was the Tandoori chicken. But then the palak paneer was bland and far too creamy and the naan we managed to find before the last pieces were snatched up were also tad over floured and tasted like cardboard. Additionally, regarding the naan, I've never actually been to a Indian food place that doesn't make it to order. It wasn't very fresh tasting. I definitely missed having warm naan, no matter what time I arrived for the buffet. The food is very bland over all. Not what people typically expect when they go to Indian food. This was the first Indian food place we've been to since we moved here less than a month ago. Hopefully, others spots will hit a little closer to the mark as we continue to explore. read more

Summary: Great Ambience Great Location Lousy Food I decided to go to this place on a cold rainy night in Oregon, after reading some reviews that it serves "Authentic Indian food" I ordered Masala Dosa and Coffee. Masala dosa was severed with Chutney, Sambar and tomato Chutney. The side dishes tasted like someone has cooked it after watching you tube video receipe first time. On Tuesday I have this place a try since it was in walking distance of the hotel. I like Indian food, the restaurant is very nice inside, I was impressed. Though the two ladies at the front seemed preoccupied by something and the greeting lacked any real customer service. The service was ok, and the reason I say this is the gal serving was very new. I don't know the situation, but my guess is she didn't get all the training she needed. She was very nice and did a good job, but inexperienced, to me that falls on the restaurant. Also the cook was seated outside wearing his apron and appeared to be on his phone at one of the outdoor tables (today when I drove by to get back to where I was staying he was out again doing the same thing), I understand people need a break but at least take off the apron and avoid sitting at tables for customers. The food was ok, had decent flavor, but my entre arrived with the chicken being lukewarm, the veggies and sauce hot. I was puzzled by this. I had the tandoori chicken tikka, and some garlic naan. I tried this place at a friend's recommendation this evening. We came in just before closing but they didn't rush us at all and everyone was very welcoming. The food was delicious, a new experience for me as I haven't tried Indian cuisine before and I thoroughly enjoyed everything I tried. The naan bread was fresh made and delicious and every dish I tried was a delicious combination of flavors. It did seem like they do need more staff and the manager did mentioned that they are hiring. I will definitely be back to this restaurant and I think everyone should give this place a try. read more

The fried rice is good. The amount of food is very good. The taste is traditional Indian mixed American so we really enjoy the food. Great customer, they checked us out every 15 minutes for water and food. Definitely recommend to anyone who want to try out Indian food. read more

Came here for lunch time for the second time with some coworkers at intel and let me tell you it was disappointing . We came almost as soon as they opened so it was not to busy , but then a rush came in and they could not keep up with refilling the food , everything was always gone naan and rice and everything else . Not to mention the tandorri chicken was not cooked . I don't understand why overtime I come here there is alway something missing or wrong . When I started working in Hillsboro, I was constantly looking for lunch places. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Swagath really close to my work. I was instantly bummed after my first visit. The channa masala was the most bland variety I'd ever experienced. It was like pulling teeth to get the wait staff to bring me another piece of naan (the small piece that was brought to me to begin with was over cooked, and mostly just burnt bubbles) I made a promise to myself that I'd give it another chance, as perhaps it was just a bad day. I went back a few weeks later, and it was better, but only marginally. It was even harder to get extra naan (which, it seems, is the standard by which I judge Indian buffets...) I gave it a third try when some co-workers suggested we go there for lunch, and it was about the same: incredibly mediocre. I was lucky to get introduced to chennai masala, which is relatively close, and as far as I'm concerned, way better. I'd say go here if you don't really have any other options. After a tiring morning of meetings, I headed to Swagat with couple of my friends. After tasting the lunch buffet at some of the Indian restaurants in Portland downtown, I was not expecting much. However, I was 'deliciously' pleased with the lunch buffet at Swagat. The buffet was awesome. Tadka was just perfect to Daal and Saag Paneer was delicious. Appetizers and Desserts were delicious too. All the dishes were served warm, which is very important if you want to enjoy the complete taste. Indian food tests best when served warm, except for the dessert. The only downfall was rice. It was Basmati rice but a little sticky. Real Basmati rice has all grains separated from each other. Overall, best lunch buffet place in Portland area. Disappointed in the food. Used to eat here in the early 2000s and the food was fantastic, flavorful and nuanced with great use of spices. Now I find the food bland and unappealing to the palate - the korma sauce was thin and bland. In fact I am convinced it wasn't even a korma. And the chicken - used to be chicken tikka masala used cubed white meat cooked in the tandoori but these dishes were full of weird grisly unidentifiable chicken pieces - and lots of them! Little room for sauce so the take home tub is full of weird chicken pieces and very little sauce. Hardly the appeal of a good takeaway and a waste of $30. I think I'm giving up on finding good Indian in the area which is a shame. Anybody recommend a place? read more

Moving from California and ending up on the West side of Portland...way...way out...was not exactly how I pictured my return to Oregon but until we save up to buy a house in my dream East side neighborhood... here we are. This means... I have to re find food that is close to home ...but still good. Now...to me...nothing compares to my experiences at Bombay Cricket Club BUT this place...is within walking distance... their pakoras are OUTSTANDING and the lady on the phone was rather lovely. B likes his food spicy..he said it was not as spicy as he wanted BUT it was delicious. He was a happy camper and I was too...except for the cilantro garnish (which was not mentioned on the menu) ... because I have a mild cilantro allergy so I do OK in small amounts. I had the lamb tikka masala and B had vindaloo and the lamb in both was tender, juicy and exactly what you would want in a lamb dish. My veggie mom tried the pakoras with me and we were both really happy with them. This is a place I will totally order from again. read more

This place is so good! Mughlai Curry (butter chicken) was beyond my expectations and is definitely my favorite dish today!!!! As well as the Tandoori Lamb Chops! It was smoky and flavorful with just the right amount of curry sauce. Their samosas were perfectly seasoned and crispy. I, of course, loved their chutney. I enjoyed the colorful decor and music. Came for dinner and it's outta this world delicious. I'm picky with Indian food but this place tastes homemade. Everything was packed full of flavor. I had lamb samosas to start and lamb jal frazi both of which were wonderful. Both dishes had rich flavors which tasted like they cooked for hours. My favorite addition was the cilantro mint chutney. Solid, tasty lunch buffet. We've visited multiple times for the lunch buffet but never outside of that, so this review is strictly for that meal. Overall, I think the food quality, variety and flavors are all great. Their lamb and goat curries are excellent, and they have plenty of vegetarian offerings. Service kind of has an air of "I wish you weren't here" which doesn't bother me whatsoever, since they refill water glasses often and clear plates away efficiently, and you can peacefully shovel food into your mouth without any hovering. It's always quite busy at lunch and yet I've never come across empty buffet trays, stale offerings, etc. The only weird thing is that the naan never seems warm, even if you go right at opening. Recommended. It's one of our regular weekday lunch visits. read more

An Indian palace. This is a great place for a lunch buffet. Most of the Indian buffet restaurants have kind of a dive look and don't seem very clean. Swagat however has a very elegant and welcoming look to it and coincidentally their name means welcome :) They usually have a huge variety of food including chicken and lamb dishes as well as a good assortment of vegetarian dishes. We also had organized a small gathering of friends (ca. 20 ppl) for lunch buffet. The service was awesome and the employees were very friendly and helpful. Food was really good. (first-timer eating Indian (5/5) nothing to compare it with) I remember the following tasted great: -allo gobi -basmati rice milk dessert Major con: I bit into a piece of that red chicken drumstick and it was RAW! I thought he would pull the item from the buffet stand but he didn't :O very unsafe; someone could have gotten food poisoning. It was worth a try at this restaurant. Remember, Papad is given as complimentary. Food was very delicious. Good for Both for veggie and non veg. Veg Biryani, Goat biryani, naan, Navratan Korma, Masala Dosa. Quantity was good. Well balanced spices (if you like spicy do not forget to mention while you order). I love spicy food and they were able to do it. Magic in the hands of chef. Traditional ambience. Last but not least.. service was excellent. While I enjoyed the lunch buffet options, the layout of the restaurant is so cramped. This is fine for sit down dinner hours, but during the lunch buffet, it's really chaotic. The prices have gone up in the past couple of years, but the lunch buffet is still relatively inexpensive. Food runs out quickly in the buffet, and it would be nice to have more options. I figure they keep it small because there's barely any room for the buffet stands. Waitstaff is nice and friendly- that's a plus! I came here for dinner with some friends a couple months ago on a Friday night. I arrived first and was shocked to find that it was nearly completely empty around 6pm. I initially thought it was closed because it was so dimly lit and empty, which is not a particularly good sign for a good restaurant. However, I was delighted that the chicken biriyani was quite good. Usually, I cannot tolerate things that are too spicy, but I really, really liked the dish. Everyone else also seemed to like what they ordered and proclaimed it to be authentic (some of them are Indian, so I trust them). Prices were very reasonable. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow and inattentive. Our waiter was difficult to flag down, as it seemed that he wasn't paying attention too often. It also took him just about forever to bring our bill and then bring back our credit cards. I would come back here but perhaps just for take-out. read more

I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for." For a $10 or $12 dollar lunch buffet, I wasn't expecting much, but I was thoroughly underwhelmed today. I used to go to the downtown Swagat pretty regularly; it was nothing extraordinary but it was good food for the price point. I went to lunch today with some family and had the worst experience I've ever had with Swagat. Dry nan, soggy rice, bland curries and lackluster dishes all contributed to a less than mediocre lunch affair. The only redeeming qualities were the staff, who were gracious and always wore a smile on their face, even through a lunch rush. I might give Swagat one more chance after this, but there are few places in town that offer decent all-you-can-eat food for under $15 dollars, and I might have lost one today. read more
