My partner and I are frequent guests at Sweet Harmony. We found it at first using yelp but from out first visit I knew it was a five star spot. Trang made us feel right at home. After ordering a sausage egg and cheese (possibly the best I have ever had because they wrap the egg around the cheese to melt it) and the black forest ham sandwich, my partner had to choose a cookie or chips with his sandwich. We had already picked up a chocolate raspberry bar (yes, it is as good as it sounds), so he wanted chips. When I said I wanted a cookie, Trang gave us one, each, on the house! The sandwiches are amazing. The cookies are good. Trang and the rest of the staff are really pleasant. The cafe has ample seating even though we typically pick up food to go. Not to mention, the theme of free baked goods continues. When we went back a few weekends ago, they were having buy-on-get-one free on baked goods. It was such a happy day. All the baking is done in house. It feels very homemade in that hearty wonderful way. The baked goods have some unusual options as well which is fun. Basically, go here for sandwiches and cookies. Breakfast. That's all I have to say. Sweet Harmony is situated in quiet Middletown, home to Wesleyan, and reflects that small hearty coffee-shop feel. My impression was that the workers know most, if not all of the locals and were extremely friendly to newcomers like my partner and I. We placed our order with Trang before striking up a delightful conversation with her. This was a direct result of our ordering process - my partner and I couldn't decide what to get with our Black Forest Ham grilled cheese melt: cookies, or chips? As the proverbial question goes. Trang answered it for us: "How about you guys go get a bag of chips and a free cookie EACH, free of charge". WOW. If this wasn't the luckiest day of my life, I don't know what would be, in retrospect. While waiting, it made it all the better to munch down on that oatmeal raisin cookie to find out that all of their baked goodies were made on the premises daily. We also got the raspberry chocolate bar because...I'm a glutton and raspberry bars are one of my favourite cheats of all time. I was blown away. I think I fell in love. This is one of, if not, the best raspberry bars of my life - the shortbread was so moist while still retaining the perfect amount of crumble. The raspberry jam I am usually critical about, but this hit the mark with its perfect blend of tangy and sweet, with real raspberry seeds in it. The chocolate was just the perfect add on. No complaints, the bar was the bomb. When we got back to the car to indulge, I only then understood why Trang suggested we should have eaten it there. The grilled cheese was so amazingly spectacular, I could do nothing else but focus on it for the next 15 minutes. The cheese was so wonderfully gooey, and the spinach, black forest ham and honey mustard all blended to make a treat. My partner went with the egg sandwich and said that it was probably the best egg sandwich he's ever had - with the cheese being folded into the omelette being their melty secret. I have had Sweet Harmonys amazing cakes and pastries at events, but today as I arrived early in town for a meeting, I stopped in for a tea, and ended up with a breakfast (they serve all day). The owner is gracious and accommodating and the food was delicious and perfectly done. My egg was perfectly over medium, bacon exactly as crisp as I like and the home made bread lovely. I've been away from Middletown for a long stretch because of work. I stopped by today with a hankering for their classic mango cake. The interior had been updated (attractively) but I was dismayed and disappointed to learn that the Vietnamese and African-American ladies who ran it for so long had retired a year ago to North Carolina. I was very fond of them and thought their baked goods, especially the mango cake (and other cakes) and the cakey, nutty brownies, were the best in the area. I will miss them and everything they represent (they were mensches), terribly. Nevertheless, I am happy to report the two young women who have taken over have kept the commitment to quality, with fresh new ideas: I hauled off two miniquiches, several small chocolate cake confections (denser than cupcakes), a small fruit tart, and a miniature ginger cake. Everything was superb, especially the little quiches, the fruit tart, and the ginger cake. They have remained committed to sourcing high-quality ingredients and not over-sweetening the baked goods. The fruit tart and the ginger cake were an especially nice surprise, bright, complex, and addictive. Middletown is in good hands. May they live long and prosper--and consider bringing back the mango cake and the brownies, if they can get their hands on the previous owners's recipes (as a tribute!). They are hoping, once they have the staffing, to open into the early evening. We could use a good cafe in Middletown that does not close before the day gets interesting! read more

My friend has been telling me to try this place for eats and I finally got the chance to stop by a couple months ago. I'll keep it short and sweet. The staff are super friendly, I got a free cookie for my first visit and they didn't rush my friend and I to leave even though we came in within an hour of closing. I ordered the chicken pesto. Man listen!! It was fantastic. The picture does not do it justice. The pesto and bread tasted home made. Bread was crispy with a nice buttery flavor and the pesto was robust and flavorful. I was pleasantly surprised with this meal. There's ample parking on the street or behind the building by the court house. They have lots of options for every kind of eater (omnivore, vegetarian). It worked well for our party that you can get breakfast and lunch all day. You go up to the counter to order, then you pick up beverages on the other end of the counter and food is brought to your table. Our daughter loved the blueberry Muffin, which was bursting with whole blueberries. I had a tuna wrap, and it was OK but wasn't the freshest tuna. Unfortunately I wasn't too crazy about the breakfast here... in my opinion it was mediocre... eggs were over filled with cheese, crepes over filled with filling and egg sandwich lacked flavor, eggs, sausage and was sadly mainly just bread.. Not something I would come back for or crave. The bakery on the other hand is a different story. So many options of cakes, muffins, cookies ect... This popped up on Yelp with great reviews and this morning I woke up super hungry and decided to have brunch here. The shop itself is very cute and bright. They offer breakfast (served all day), brunch and lunch options with an assortment of bagels, muffins and pastries. I opted for the Corey's Cali omelette which is a 3 egg omelette with cheddar cheese, avocado, bacon and tomatoes. It was very good. The bacon was cooked perfectly. There's bound to be something to please your palette. A lot of their selections are customizable as well, so feel free to add that extra strip of bacon! The service is fantastic and the lady who runs the shop has an infectious energy. She frequently offers samples to customers as well, a proven (aka, successful in enticing me) marketing strategy. Where the place falls short, however, is their flavored coffee drinks. I've tried their specialty coffee twice now and I was just not impressed. My mocha was overly sweet and lacked the aroma and strength of a good roast. It definitely had more chocolate syrup than coffee. The pumpkin pie latte I had was less overwhelming in the sugar department, but way too overwhelming in terms of spices. I like my pumpkin latte to have spices, but the mix of spices used just weren't reminiscent of pumpkin pie at all. Rather, it seemed there had been too much of one spice and not enough of another. Sweet Harmony warrants a 3rd try just to sample the coffee, but I am skeptical. I would go for their pastries and for their food, but I would not recommend the place solely for their coffee. read more

So I quickly got a GingerBread Chocolate Latte instead! They also have some vegan options. The crepes were gluten free, and pretty flavorful. I would highly recommend both. I got one sweet (Banana Foster) & one savory (Very Veggie). I'm not sure what Foster sauce is, but it was amazing. It tasted like a mix of caramel and cinnamon. Also the portions are very large & filling! We both got small lattes but they have to be Atleast 10-12oz mugs. Great prices for awesome sizes & QUALITY. I will definitely be back. Best baked potato i have had in CT. Tons of soup choices and great cakes too .. From the street, this place looks unique. Go inside and its uniqueness becomes even more evident. It is like walking into someones old victorian house and you are damn lucky because they love to cook and want to share it with you - it doesn't feel like a restaurant, but is comfortable and cozy like your friends house filled with great comfort food. This place is fantastic! Tucked away in Middletown, this homestyle bistro is full of fresh flavor and a unique atmosphere. The interior is full of victorian era antiques and garden decor, with big and small dining tables of mis-matching varieties. On this afternoon, I stepped out for a quiet lunch on my own. Armed with a book and a Groupon, I headed over. I did have a problem finding parking. There is one small free public lot right behind the house, but it was full. I drove around the block twice, and found a street spot with a meter about a block away. I looked over the artsy crafts and handmade goods for sale in the front room while I waited to be seated. My table was in a quiet area by the waitstation which was like a kitchen counter with all the fixins. I had a hard time deciding with the menu, but I settled for items off the specials page: Breaded & Baked Chicken Wrap w/ ranch and Mozzerella and a fresh unsweetened raspberry iced tea. The tea was super fresh, with muddled raspberries floating around in it. Delish! The chicken wrap was awesome as well, hot and crispy, served with a generous side salad. I of course saved room for dessert, a Mango Cake with Pineapple Mousse and Toasted Coconut. It was perfect, I savored a few bites, then strategically wrapped the rest to enjoy later. This spot is an excellent place to have a bite and read a book, or to bring a girlfriend or mom date. The only drawbacks, and the reasons for one star less than perfect: ~~The bad parking situation ~~The Lunch-Only hours ~~The one server waitstaff*** This last one has to have a note for it. While there is only one server working the shift, the kitchen and back staff were eager to be out on the floor and helping. My orders were taken by one of the chefs, very polite, and another chef came out to check on me through out my meal. The server happily brought the check for me, and I was well taken care of. Came on a Sunday morning for a good cup of joe and some jazz music. I ordered a Bananas Foster Latte which I was told was made with fresh bananas. It was delicious. Girlfriend got a Milky Way Latte which was made with homemade chocolate and caramel. Also top notch. For food I got a sausage egg and cheese which was just OK. Came on a quasi-hamburger bun which was too soft for my liking. However, the sausage was grilled and there was a nice mound of American cheese on top. The owners and baristas are very passionate about their food and drink and really know how to sell their product with a smile. They convinced me to order a Banana Cheesecake Muffin which they warmed up for us. Delightful. One negative was that this place has been uncomfortably hot every time I have gone. Wear a tee shirt. There also isn't enough seating, and many tables are taken up by people with laptops and headphones for extended periods of time. They could easily get rid of a large cabinet near the door and add some more bar seating. I also had a crepe once and wasn't too crazy about it, and the same goes for the Whole Wheat muffins. Personally I thought they were a little too sweet, but they have a very diverse selection of flavors, and they were better than many other biscotti I've had elsewhere. The service is great and the folks here are very friendly, as well. I've only been here in the mornings and there is a large variety of items available to sate most anyone's hunger. Hot breakfast sandwiches, bagels, scones, cookies and salads are offered. All are made in-house and have that home-made look. There are currently "Paleo-cookies" and gluten-free cookies/cakes as well. On Sunday afternoons, free live jazz is performed from 1:30 until 3:30. Bathrooms are large and clean.
