We stumbled upon this place while venturing on this side of Chicago. This place appears to be VERY popular and walking in and smelling the freshly made waffle cones for the ice cream/gelato made it even better. There is a small bench downstairs where we enjoyed our gelato but there is more space upstairs that people walked to. The staff was friendly and patient and they just had many great selections to choose from and sample taste!!! The store had the ac going in which made it even more refreshing from our sit seeing and being out in the sun. The recommended ones was the chocolate but the kids ventured and enjoyed their vanilla and I enjoyed this coffee flavored gelato. I would recommend this place. It was refreshing. read more

Stopped by since it was along the riverwalk and the staff were arguing with each other which made it super awkward. We got the small sizes for $6 and it was the perfect amount. The pineapple flavor was not bad and pretty refreshing on a hot day. The mango was very perfume-y and not the best mango flavor I've had. The blueberry was my favorite. Overall, convenient for where it is if you're on the riverwalk but service was terrible. There are a few tables out front but more seating alongside the riverwalk available. read more

It wasn't busy and they have a no samples policy, so my girls both took a chance on something and neither of them liked what they got. That backfired. The prices are a bit jacked up to fit the touristy vibe of the shop. The gelato was fine, tasted like a chain. We had some from another spot a few nights later (a local Italian spot called Bongiorno's not too far away) that was 10 times better -- definitely worth going that way for some gelato IMO. I was walking around the riverwalk, and wanted to have a coffee. So stopped by this place. They only had la colombe coffee can. But that was a good strong coffee. I also went for a 2 scoop gelato. Nutella was my favorite flavor. Pineapple was my other flavor. That was good as well. read more

The one time I came here with some friends, the line was super long, which is fine, but the workers there waited until people were at the front to let us know they were out of all but one flavor. By the time we were first in line, all the flavors were sold out. However, the staff never informed anyone in line of this. This gelato place is located conveniently on the riverfront and has some outdoor seating that is relatively empty. The flavors taste realistically like fruit, but the texture is super strange. It's super airy and doesn't really taste like gelato at all. We got the Pineapple and Peach. The flavor was good but really didn't vibe with the texture. It's $7 for two scoops, and they smash both scoops into half of a cup flat. Doesn't look like a lot, but is enough to share between two people. The flavors themselves are pretty limited though, it's like either fruit or basic chocolate/mint. Nice addition to the Riverwalk, especially the water fountain out front that kids love to splash in. It does rob space from the possible seating area, but maybe they put seats out when it's not so hot. Not going to lie, the prices here are really high for gelato, even for my touristy neighborhood. You can save more money by going to Eataly or Amorino, but then you're eating inside an air-conditioned building and not right beside the water. Didn't mind throwing in a couple of bucks for a tip since these young folks were working outside in brutally hot conditions with just a fan. Still, the flavors were very refreshing, not sticky or cloying. Had the strawberry and the mango. Both delicious. Perfect balance between milky and icy. Loved this place! We were visiting Chicago this last weekend and wanted to find a good place to eat some gelato, and we were glad to discover this joint. Heads up, the place is confusing to get to if you haven't been to Chicago before. Google maps will confuse you, just remember to go downstairs near the water from the Chicago Riverwalk bridge. Anyway, I got the hazelnut gelato and it was exquisite! It was creamy, light and perfect. I ate it by the water and it was nice to enjoy a view with my frozen treat. I also sampled the mango as well and that was also nice, tasted more like sorbet than gelato though. The service was pleasant and professional. I'll def be back when I'm in Chicago again. read more

My wedding was scheduled for August 8,2020. But due to Covid-19, we unfortunately had to cancel. Janice was extremely compassionate, understanding and flexible during the whole process. Sweet Home Gelato was the most compassionate and flexible vendor. It is not easy to cancel a wedding, unfortunately many vendors were not as accommodating. Janice immediately offered a refund, date change or gift card for the deposit. Sweet Home Gelato was under no circumstance required to issue a refund. WOW - Where to start. AVOID AVOID AVOID! The gelato is OVERPRICED and was not even traditional. I have been to Italy multiple times, and this product didn't even come close, probably because the ingredients are of cheap quality. I purchased a double scoop of gelato in a cone and it was $10.00!! In addition, when I asked politely for a plastic spoon, the manager declined. Apparently, "the spoons are only for people who order floats", despite the fact that there was a bucket within arms reach filled with literally hundreds of spoons. I asked the manager, "so let me get this right, I just paid $10 for an ice cream cone and you wont give me a plastic spoon?!" I couldn't believe her response and attitude. Clearly the management at Sweet Home Gelato is poorly trained and knows nothing about customer service. I WILL NOT RETURN AND HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU FIND ANOTHER PLACE!
