So, umm, today I accidentally referred to Bin Laden's death using Obama's name, which of course thoroughly embarrassed me in front of my coworkers. I mean, COME ON, Obama Bin Laden, it's an easy mistake. They freakin' set me up! Regardless, in repentance for my Republican/Fox News NON-intentional mistake, I relegated myself to eat lunch at my desk, alone, hiding in the shadows of my office. Under hermit lock-down, I had to find a quick, easy place to get take-out. I've been sick of all the choices near my work so I used my handy dandy Yelp "Nearby" function, and for some reason, Sweetsalt JUST randomly popped up. I've NEVER seen it on the Yelp app EVER. And with almost 200 reviews, it seems like it's been around long enough to pop up at some point in the past 5 years. Yelp must HATE me.
Luckily, I've been on a "cute, gourmet sandwich shop" kick lately, especially after I discovered Simplethings, then Choppe Choppe, then Mendocino Farms, I'm just in love with gourmet sandwiches right now. Shhhh, don't tell my ancestors, but bread is my nouveau rice. Yes friends, I am a failure to my kind. Bread and I are like Romeo and Juliet, our love for each other torn apart by those who don't understand. And I'm pretty sure bread is Romeo...
After looking at their menu online, 3 sandwiches popped out at me--Short Rib Roll, Cajun Chicken, and Buffalo Chicken. I went with the Short Rib Roll and MY OH MY, am I glad I did. It was a good sandwich. I can't say my palate is normally sophisticated enough to taste everything in sandwiches, but I could taste EVERYTHING in this one. The short rib, the onion confit, the goat cheese, the roasted garlic, the arugula--EVRITING (imagine that in Thai Lady Boy accent referring to what they will do for $60 American). And I normally HATE goat cheese but for some reason, the combination of the goat cheese with the confit gave the sandwich a juicy, creamy feel to it which balanced the slight dryness of the short rib. It all just worked, girlfrieeeeend. The refreshing mixed green salad with "Sweetsalt" dressing wasn't bad either, and I normally don't like salad either.
To top it all off, I ordered a small brick of their homemade chocolate bread pudding. I'm normally used to more "liquidy" bread pudding that requires a cup and a spoon to eat, but this was a brick of solid bread pudding. I heated it up a bit (you best do this if you get take-out, otherwise you will be disappointed) and once warmed, it shined. Not the best bread pudding I've ever had, but good stuff. And with the caramel and whip cream accoutrements they gave on the side, I was happy.
Oh, and you gotta love a place that serves my fav drink of all time -- Izze clementine flavored bottled soda-- right??! Because obviously I'm the center of your world? ANSWER ME!
Lastly, the place itself is cute. It's kind of that typical Anthropologie-ish cute that every little shop seems to be sporting these days with an abundance of stark white and chocolate browns, and a chalk board of some kind. It's not as adorable as I think it could be in comparison to other places I've seen, but it's definitely a nice environment to sit, chill, talk, and eat. I'd TOTALLY do it. And you know it's a decently good place when the Studio City/Noho crowd gets up before noon to try it. I came in at around 11:30 for my pick-up and there was a bit of a line already.
Oh, and to my surprise, they put my takeout order in a regular takeout plastic bag. This was the first of the "cute sandwich shops" I've found in the past couple months that did not provide their takeout in some sort of brown paper bag with the stamped name of the shop on it. REBELS!!! read more
