A Perfect Diner ! I don't think many places deserve a 5 star rating, but I can't justify awarding Sylvia's anything less. The service is welcoming and efficient, and the menu selections are everything you'd expect from a diner. More importantly, "They pull it off". Tiring of my usual breakfast spot in Ellsworth, I looked online for diner options and reviews and decided to try Sylvia's. Not being a fan of strip mall dining, I've driven past Sylvia's for several years. MY MISTAKE !! Inside I found a very comfortable spot in which to have a leisurely, well-prepared breakfast. Also impressive, is the fact that Sylvia's doesn't try to be something that it's not--just straight-forward food is what's offered and what's provided. Unpretentious lunchroom in an unpretentious strip mall on a busy highway, clearly popular with the locals. Stopped in with my family while passing through, excellent lunch. Lobster rolls ($13) were best we had in Maine. Service excellent, waitstaff friendly, prices reasonable. read more

The food is absolutely delicious! I typically call ahead of time to order to save time but they don't start it until I arrive....... Recently I brought a friend of mine who had never been there and we ate inside. The service was horrendous with the waitress not even greeting us but greeting and taking care of people she knew who arrived after us! This happened several times. I finally had to ask if we could order, which we did. We did not get the water with lemon we both requested and my friend did not get her soda. It was like we were bothering her (and the place wasn't crowded- there was a nice flow and several waitresses). Finally when our food came out she gave me my friends order and vise versa, not a biggie but made a face when I asked about the mustard I had requested and our water. I finally went and asked for a manager who came right away and was very apologetic. She took over our table from that point on so we ended up on a good note. The stars I gave are for the FOOD, not the service. I hope when you go that waitress would have moved on to something she is better suited for- like toll collector on a quiet highway.............. read more

Passing through Ellsworth ME, traveling from Bar Harbor to Montpelier VT, stopped here for breakfast. Got waited on promptly and with a smile. Decided to try the Crabmeat Omlet. It was absolutely INCREDIBLE!! Market price was $13.95, and very very well worth it! This place is a gem!!! read more

Poor service and not great food. They seat you at a dirty table and then clean it up once you are in place. The host then comes back and throws silverware and menus on the table for you to disburse. I recognize that it is a diner but it was almost rude. read more

The food is just ok....the service is just ok. We relocated to the area 2 and 1/2 years ago and so, we're not really treated like locals yet. You get that vibe when you go in. Unless you're familiar, you're not as important. The food is just average really. read more

Drove more than 1/2 hour to get to Sylvia's. Despite the fact that it's website says it's open on Mondays when we got there it was closed. I checked the site again and it says it's open. Very frustrating. Went to Denny's instead where the food was good even if slow service as it was very busy. read more

Love Sylvia's. My family and I go there at least once a week. We love the fresh homemade food and the friendly staff.

Absolutely horrible. Worst service ever. The busboy/host was inappropriate, rude, and very short with us. We were sat at a dirty, unclean table and he walked by and just threw placemats and silverware down. This was happening continually. I worked in the restaurant industry for years and never have been to a place where the tables weren't at least cleared and wiped down before people were sat down. The waitress was even worse. Coffee was good and extremely hot but when a member of my party politely asked for refills whenever the waitress got a minute, she got mad and almost burnt two of the people at my table with the steaming pot and came extremely close to hitting my sister in the face with it. She purposely poured it in a sloshing, messy manner and almost burnt me with the coffee in the process. When the food eventually came, some of the food was missing and we were afraid to ask for simple things like ketchup and butter because of how rude and mean our waitress was. One member of my party was never asked what they wanted to drink and never received his drink. Another never received toast that automatically comes with the ordered meal. It was very busy, but as a former waitress, there is no excuse whatsoever to act the way she did. My family and I are always polite and respectful wherever we go and we were in return treated in a indecent, condescending manner. To top it all off, the food sucked. read more
