I stopped at Tacko for a quick bite. Mexican, tacos specifically, is my favorite food #whyaminotmexican? So naturally I ordered the street tacos which came with 3 tacos (chicken, carne asada, and carnitas). They were good (because they are tacos) but nothing to write home about. The red and green sauces at the table added a needed kick. I paired it with a nice cold Tecate #ballingonabudget. I left with my hunger satisfied but really wasn't too impressed. If I ever find myself at Tacko again, I'll give the burrito a try. read more

Tastes just like my other two favorite Mexican places in SF (Nicks and Tortilla Heights) which is no surprise since it's the same owner. The new england ambiance is also a huge win for this place. Nick, the owner, is the best! After waiting in line for 15 minutes to order I was informed that they're "cash only" (I failed to miss the little sign that was posted). Not a problem - Nick allowed me to eat on credit and just asked that I pay them next time. So nice! He and Bob (?) were doing a great job making sure everyone was happy. You can tell customer service is very important to them. My chicken taco (Nick's way, OF COURSE) was stuffed full of meat and a generous dollop of guac. Chicken tortilla soup was also very satisfying and hearty for a soup. I like the counter in the back overlooking the kitchen and close to the TV. Great place for a inexpensive and delicious bite. SOOOO glad they opened up as the Marina/Cow Hollow was in desperate need for a good Mexican joint! My only suggestion is for them to work on creating a more flavorful/spicy salsa or red taco sauce. Before kickball playoffs wanted to get a quick meal so I ordered their version of a Burrito bowl and it was quite good. I was holding out on this one-- it feels a little bit fast food-ish, which I didn't love, so I was ready to just never go. But my boyfriend went, and he LOVED it (and Nick), so I acquiesced and checked it out. I wasn't disappointed. Their margaritish was bomb, and the carnitas quesadilla was awesome and also not overly messy. The tacos were messy, of course, but they were also delicious-- especially with their salsas. I think I prefer Tacolicious, but when I'm in a rush/not in the mood to wait for an hour, this'll be my go-to read more

It's ok. We got a San Francisco bowl with carne Asada and a carnitas SF burrito for about $24. Nothing special. The burrito is small (this is no El Farolito) and the bowl was soggy. I like that he is using organic tortillas as most places dont spend the extra cash and GMO CORN is just freaky. Fish was fresh and not frozen and staff was friendly. By far one of my favorite taco spots in SF. If you get a taco be sure to order it "Nick's Way!" The quality of meats they use are evident in how juicy their tacos are. I love the setup of the place. Normally taco Spots have a Latino flare but this spot was a nautical theme. When you sit down all the pictures and artwork are congruent with the theme. They had a TV which had the Warriors game on (always a plus). I love the sauces that they put on the tables too! Whatever you get just use what's on the table In their clear bottles. They have a wall of hot sauces but honestly just stick to those. The prices may seem steeper than a usual taco at first but when you see they pack on everything you realize how flavorful each taco is and you're no longer thinking regular street taco. I like this place way more then tacolicious. I'm willing to drive in the city and find parking for these tacos. And that's saying something! read more

I come here for my crispy taco fix because it's close to my gym, and I usually end up wishing I had gone to Nick's crispy tacos instead. Here are the reasons: The crispy tacos here are skimpy on the additional ingredients like the guacamole and the cheese. The crispy tacos here are sometimes cold, whereby the cheese between the soft and crispy shell is not completely melted. The salad here is basically iceberg lettuce and canned beans. read more

I use to love this place - was always amazing for some quick tacos. I came here just about every week for two years for taco Tuesday and sometimes on the weekends. Unfortunately, the last three times times I've come here (over the space of 3 Months) the food has been cold when it's served. The Carne Asada was some of the best around - now it's lukewarm, chewy to the point of not being edible, and colder than the tortilla it's served on. Great food! Being from MA, I thought that the Nantucket theme was neat, however, not the star of the show. That didn't matter though. The ingredients and "San Francisco" style burritos where unlike anything I have had before. Not going to lie, I was hesitant to try this place but was more than pleased once I had a Yerba Mate Aqua Fresca to wash down delicious food that filled me up for the night. I tried the California Burrito and wasn't very impressed. I'm from San Diego and this burrito is a classic down there but this one wasn't authentic. I added sour cream and avocado to give it a chance and it was still extremely dry and hard packed. A best kept secret item at Tacko is the soup. It's amazing! Tomato broth with celery, carrots, onions and tomatoes. Big pieces of lean white pulled chicken. A nice piece of avocado, melted cheese and tortilla strips (I say hold the chips so it's healthier). Today for the first time I tried the skinny guacamole. I really really wanted to like this place. I figured "Nantucket theme, cool! They probably have awesome lobster, clam chowder, baked schrod..." Then I saw the Mexican secondary theme and thought... "lobster burrito! schrod tacos" ... neat idea. But it's neither. It really isn't a great Nantucket-style restaurant to start. The lobster roll, while buttery, was teeny tiny and only had claw meat. For nearly 20 bucks, that's ridiculous. And it was hot. Lobster rolls are suppose to be cold, on a hot buttery toasted bun. That's important. And they got this all wrong. I didn't even finish it. The Mexican side of things were pretty tasty, but certainly not going to win in any head-to-head comparisons to a "real" taqueria anywhere nearby. The burrito was good, but cold. Also, the fact that they don't take credit cards is ridiculous... especially when you pay that much for one dish. So, bottom line... this isn't going to be a successful restaurant they way they are doing it now. That being said, I will be happy to update my rating once I see some things change. But for now... People are raving about this place! I probably ordered the wrong thing, but I wasn't that impressed. I thought I would spend a little extra for a mahi-mahi taco and a grilled shrimp taco. Both seemed more substantial than the street tacos since they come with pico and cabbage on top. Man, was I disappointed! Both tacos lacked any flavor at all. I couldn't even taste the seafood, which is why I wanted them in the first place! I doused them in the green and red sauces they put on the table to no avail. Just tasted like sauce (which was good, granted). I had some buyer's remorse and wished I would have just done traditional street. I do like that they use very fresh ingredients, and you can tell. They were generous with the shrimp and fish, I just wish I could have tasted them. Their guacamole, though, is the business! Super cheap and really delicious. Margs are pretty tasty too. I frequent Tacko more times then I would like to admit but it's a great feeling when I am greeting on the phone by a happy employee. Even better when they know your name by your order. Every time I walk in the staff is very kind as I am usually in a rush grabbing a To GO order.
