I was born and raised in North of Mexico, once in a while I really want to eat really good authentic Mexican food, that one that makes me feel back home. The only place in the area and it is one of my favorite is Tacolucious, but this time I was really hungry and I didn't want to wait for an hour to get a table so My friend and I walked up the street to try this place, I walked in and I liked it, looks fun, the menu got me excited, but the food.. not really, its ok. I have been to Tacko numerous times since it opened. The first couple of times the food was great and the service was great. I took the time to tell friends about it and thought it was a great addition to the neighborhood. However, I'm giving this 1 star review based on my last three visits. The quantity and quality was not the same and certainly not up to par. They have gone down significantly. I gave it two more chances after a very bad shrimp burrito. Things got worse.... The worst part is the service. I have never heard an owner that is so rude to it's customers AND employees. I witnessed the owner (Nick) scream at his staff and fire someone while I was in the bathroom. Another time I asked him if I could order something on the side, and he replied with no and that if I don't like it I can go somewhere else. No such reason what so ever for a response like that. In a city where there are plenty of great food choices, I refuse to go to a place where an owner doesn't appreciate it's customers. So so so disappointing. My only hope in writing this is that Nick takes the advice and changes his tone. read more

Couldn't really tell if the burritos were good or bad. I want to say that they're like a mixture of something you'd find at a hole-in-the-wall place in the Mission and Chipotle, but my taste buds were going nuts......... mostly because I wanted to try as many of the hot sauces on the hot sauce wall as possible. And even though I ended up with heart burn, it's a must-do. Where else can you try a million and a half types of hot sauce / salsa!? You'll want to alleviate the fire in your mouth with some of their horchata, too. Or margarita. Just don't go with the white sangria because it tasted like nothing....... In any case, I highly recommend coming here after / during / before day drinking in the area. read more

BEWARE if you are placing a pick up order via the phone, and referencing the menu on their website - the prices on their menu online are all lower, but when you arrive to pick up your food they will charge you the prices listed on their in-store menu board! When I told the cashier about this, he had no idea what to do, and there was no manager on site. Needless to say, I was charged the higher amount. First let me start by saying you can eat off the floor at Tacko. The place is immaculate and you're greeted right away by friendly staff. The food is fresh, not your typical greasy Mexican joint, and my personal favorite - the Baja Fish Tacos - are so yummy! Their tacos are good for the Marina/Cow Hollow area. I prefer this place over Tacolicious but don't expect their tacos to be something out of the Mission. I came here for Taco Tuesday and got their street style tacos, which includes one of each of the carne asada, carnitas and pollo topped with cilantro and onions. Pollo and carnitas were seasoned nicely. The steak was a little chewy but still tasted great. I will definitely be coming back and trying other things on the menu. We were very excited to try this place, always looking for great local taco's and our quest for the best guacamole. Sadly our first visit ended in no food. At 6.30pm on a Friday night, there was one person behind the cash register not taking any orders, two or three polite looking servers standing around not doing much and no one cooking any food. After about 15 minutes waiting in line going nowhere slowly, the guy behind the register said to the folks at the front of the line "it may take a while" ....we walked out. Seriously, on a Friday night, you need to be able to make taco's in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes. We do hope that they get their act together as it would be really nice to try the food. read more

I felt like a flagpole-sitter on the footrest-less bar stool at the communal bar/table. Seriously, you're perched on this stool with your feet dangling like a 4-year-old. Unless you're 7 feet tall, you won't be able to rest your feet on the floor while sitting on the stool. It makes you feel completely ridiculous and physically uncomfortable - not something I'd think a restaurant owner would be going for unless he's trying to encourage customers to order take-out (in which case he's wasting money on a lot of useless square footage and a liquor license). Fortunately, there are some tables with picnic-style benches, and I moved over to a table by the wall, where I was much more comfortable. The decor is interesting and attractive. I loved the framed 40's "Yachting" magazines on the walls. I ordered the fish taco Nick's way, and it was tasty. If you're in the neighborhood, give this place a try, but be sure to grab a picnic table if you want to eat in - especially if you're drinking! read more

I came here with 3 of my friends and the service is just terrible. 2 of the girls were over 21 and 2 of us were not. The 2 girls who were over 21 ordered their own drinks and had their IDs checked. The manager, Nem, would not stop staring at us and talking about us with other coworkers. He even sent another coworker to check on us to see who was drinking. We could feel eyes on us at all times and we felt super uncomfortable and harassed the entire time. He asked to see our IDs FOR A SECOND TIME. We even complained about his staring to him and he kept doing it. So a friend at work tells me about this "great" Mexican restaurant in the hood. So I decided to check it out. First time ordered a burrito, a bit overpriced and as far as taste ok, nothing to write home about. Today I was craving Mexican food and thought I'd give Tacko a second try. What a disappointment! Ordered tortilla soup. First it took 15 min for my ordered to arrive. And when it finally did, whatever it is they placed in front of me was not tortilla soup but rather a concoction made of salty broth to which they added pico de gallo salsa rather than fresh chopped tomato. To top it all of and I guess to save me time the threw a piece of lime into the soup. The lime is always given on the side. Won't go back. Tacko is a solid option for a quick bite in this part of town. Nothing in the Marina is cheap it seems, and Tacko is no exception it's more expensive than your average Mexican spot, but not overly pricey. I always get my "Tacko's" Nick's way, I really like the crispy aspect and the Carne Asada is bomb!!! Also the Shrimp "Tacko's" have huge juicy shrimp and are a real treat. Another bonus is the salsa seems extremely fresh. I have no qualms bringing friends here, I'm confident they will enjoy it. Also, you can buy buckets of beer at a decent price. One time the owner Nick came in wearing a kilt and was pretty obliterated (Pub Crawl my guess), someone in line made some comment about something and he yelled at them something like "Well than you can just get out!" Very fairly priced (for the marina/cow hollow neighborhood) and delicious tacos. I got a baha taco (lightly battered and flash-fried mahi) taco and fish taco (grilled-to-perfection mahi) "Nick's Way". "Nick's Way" is pretty much a loaded version of a "hard-shell wrapped in soft-corn-tortilla" taco with all sorts of fresh fixins added on top - complete with guac, slaw, and melty cheesy goodness. The BEST tacos. This is one of our go-to food spots in our neighborhood. We always bring friends from out of town here and they LOVE it. Growing up in Southern California, I know a good taco and Tacko does not disappoint. For the perfect size meal, for me 2 Nick's Ways tacos and for my boyfriend usually 3, sometimes 4 Nick's Ways tacos if he's really hungry. The Elote con Queso (corn with cheese) is so delicious and tender too. The lobster roll is just "ok" because the bread gets too soggy, but the amount of lobster makes up for it and puts a smile on my face. If you are really hungry, the San Francisco burrito is a beast and SO good. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. But if you are only here once, get a Nick's Way taco. The nautical theme is very nicely done. Interesting vintage magazine covers, fine art posters, maps for wall paper...it's a fun place to eat. Very clean, I've been there when it was really busy and they had the staff to keep it pretty darn clean under extreme pressure. The food is fantastic...Mexican food that tastes healthy...but not too healthy. There is a reason we love it. I had the taco "Jack's way"...excellent, different. When the mood strikes for "casual" Mexican food we know we have only a few options if we want to stay close to home. We've been going to Tacko since they opened and have been relatively happy with the food and service. But this is the second time I've ordered food to go and have noticed that the quality of the food has majorly declined. A few notes to consider.... The carne asada is terribly chewy and overly salty. More then once, my food has had a fishy flavor when no fish product was supposed to be in the meal. The taco salad portion size has been cut in half. I encourage Tacko to get back on ball, especially now that there's a new kid on the block; Bonita. read more

If you're looking for some top notch quality meat, this is the place to visit. I came here last night with my wife although it was really busy (to be expected on a Friday night) we still got our food in a timely matter. Given the meat was a little dry probably from standing aside on the grill the quality was still great. I had also ordered a strawberry margarita but given a regular margarita, they were so busy I didn't bother to ask them to change it. May come back next time if I'm in the area. read more

Still absolutely DELICIOUS!!!! Every time I come I order an "elote," the corn on the cob with Mexican cheese, and all the other patrons ask me what it is. Don't bother asking, just order it!!!! It's so tasty. I just made a daring move, though, and ordered something different from my usual Nick's Way chicken taco...I tried the chicken quesadillas. GREAT decision. My hubby did the same but substituted the chicken for mahi mahi and says he'll never order something else ever again - he enjoyed it that much. In case you're wondering they're pretty big. Imagine a huge tortilla folded in half and loaded with chicken, salsa, and cheese, fothen cut once in half again. Plus, they're lightly fried so the crispness gives a great texture and taste. I don't care if this food tastes like what white people think Mexican food is etc. I love food of Mexican origin, whether it is in a Houston (TX) taqueria, at a taco truck in the Mission, at Regalito, Mamacita or Tacko. I just ate at Tacko for the first time and I was very impressed! I was looking all over Union street for a good tacqueria and finally gave up when I found this place. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and saw the food proportions on other customers' plates. I ordered two crispy chicken tacos "Nick's way" and let me tell you they were sooooo tasty! They were very generous with the guacamole and the cheese and pinto beans add a really nice flavor. The cripy shell with the soft corn tortillas on the outside are a great combo and are definitely the way to go. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu! Service was good and the guy at the cashier helped me in ordering just two tacos instead of three (he told me that would've been too much, and he was right). Also, the girl who called my order when it was ready was sweet and I felt like she was really genuinely happy to be serving me. Great overall first time experience! read more

It's nicks taco but in a better environment and more margarita selections. I have been here a few times and it doesn't disappoint. I've been here to drink with coworkers and friends a I've seen families here with kids. The neighborhood is awesome but parking might be difficult.
