It was a dark and stormy night when my girlfriend (JennyEatsSF) and I decided to go watch a Beatles Tribute band. But things got stranger as the night went on. After the concert, we ended up at a taqueria. THAT HAD POSTERS OF NANTUCKET! And this taqueria served corn. I've been coming here for years. It used to be a decent burrito but the quality is just so subpar now. The meat preparation is poor (overcooked many times) and everything just tastes salty. The salsa they provide used to be good but now it's watery. The place is always busy so i think they just need to turn over so much food they've stopped caring about quality. Meh. My boyfriend and I went here for an late lunch-early dinner at 4:00pm. Upon arriving, I was pretty confused because the decor of this place makes it look like it serves po' boys and clam chowder. Like the walls are literally lined with posters of Nantucket and yachting magazines. There's actually a lobster roll on the menu under the tacos section which is questionable. That's when I knew I probably wouldn't get an authentic burrito from this place. However, I was delighted to see that Tacko makes burritos in different styles. They offer it Mexican style, Mission style, San Diego Style, and California style (comes with fries). My boyfriend ordered the California burrito while I ordered the San Diego burrito, both with chicken. Too bad my worries came true. We ate the whitest tasting burritos of our lives..The chicken was dry, bland, and all breast meat. Even the sauces that were at the table didn't have much flavor or spice at all. I found myself dousing each bite with sauce just to add flavor and moisture to the burrito. Even without the addition of sauce my burrito tasted mostly of pico de gallo. I kinda wish that I had gotten a mission style burrito or something so that there would be more flavor from the rice and beans. Checked out Tacko for dinner last Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised. Other than being cash only (with an ATM that charges $1 - plus whatever your bank charges) I had a great experience. The staff was very friendly and offered to let my friend and I sample both sangrias when we were debating which to try. They also threw in free chips and pico which were really tasty. I had the corn and black bean salad... it was awesome. A great, light limey dressing and all of my favorite mexican toppings, including cotija cheese. For all you hot sauce junkies out there, definitely check out this place... they have a whole wall of different hot sauces for adding a kick to your order. I had one tacko Nick's way and one regular. Maybe because I know that Nick's way adds a boatload of calories in an extra tortilla and cheese, I enjoyed the regular tacko better. I do love these kind of chips too, but ate sparingly because I know they're greasy. But hey, if you're eating Mexican you kind of have to pick your calories (a la not going Nick's way so I can eat more Chips!) Not the most amazing ever but good. Salsa verde was tasty too. Alright, so it's not authentic Mexican cuisine and you can find far better for cheaper in the Mission. But when you live in the area and you're in the mood for a decent burrito then this is your best bet. I'm a fan of the carnitas and the carne asada nick's way tacos. My only complaint is that cilantro is built into both the pico de gallo and the guacamole, and as someone whose tastebuds firmly believe that cilantro ruins everything, that's not ideal. I LOVE this place. I don't live in San Francisco and my friends still comment that I come here too often. Carne asada is the best I've ever had and I used to live in what is essentially little Mexico. Quesadilla is bomb and the sangria is a must. The staff is really friendly and accommodating. It was okay. I was excited to see a San Diego style burrito. I grew up on the border and am used to my burritos without the rice and beans in them. The pico de gallo was way too juicy. I ordered the street tacos which were good, but the shrimp taco I ordered was inedible. The tortilla was fine, as was the filler of cabbage and salsa, however the shrimp was over cooked to the point of being a rubber hockey puck. A pretty good place! The place seems like a restaurant frequented by locals, which was nice to know. It took a while to order, but once the order was placed the food came out pretty quick. We got the burritos and chips/salsa. Salsa was a bit salty but still tasty. Burritos were very tasty but wish I got more rice in it. I wasn't sure what to make of a Northeastern theme taco place. It is San Francisco, and we have the Mission. However, if you live in the Marina or Cow Hollow, this is the best place to get tacos. I have often visited Tacolicious, but this place best it easily. First, the tacos are better. Second, you don't have to wait 30 to 40 minutes before you are seated. Nice big open dining area; after you order your food from the counter, they bring it to your table. The chips/salsa/guac for $6.50 was good: I loved the plentiful thick crispy tortilla chips and they gave enough salsa and guacamole where we actually had excess to be used with other stuff. It tasted like something that came out of the freezer and was beyond disappointing.
