Initially, I was taken aback by $20 for 4 tacos as I was thinking street taco size. It turned out they were full size, so not complaining about pricing or amount of food for the price. The make the tortialls fresh when you order so that's mostly a good thing, but I found them to be a little thicker than my preference. The Al Pastor meat was good but this is another place that doesn't put pineapple in it. Not sure what's up with that. Overall pretty good. read more

Food was really good. But I believe it was way overpriced. I got the tripas plate with rice and bean and a lime jarritos for $25. My buddy got 4 tacos, 2 shrimp and 2 carnitas for $35. You had to pay extra for avocado and cheese. And in my opinion the portions were not in line with the price. We won't be back. read more

As weary traveler on Easter Sunday night, we were hungry without any food services on the long stretch of roads until we stumbled upon this place. Their tacos are delicious with so many choices of meat. Their taco de tripa is wicked and a must if you come here. We would definitely be back if we're I Gilroy again ! read more

The quality has really decreased here. I was excited to bring some of my colleagues from work, and bragged about the fresh food and delicious seasonings. All the flavors were there between the asada torta, to the carnitas, saudero, and Al pastor quick service terrific salsa bar and the soothing karaoke it was outstanding. This will become my new tradition when visiting the Bay Area and to those reading this is a must consider for the 5 min off route GPS it is sure something to taco about lol read more

Delicious!! Don't let the appearance fool you. This is the best local spot for great food. I'm never disappointed with the super carne asada burrito or the pastor. The quesadillas are great but messy and a little greasy. Our friend tried the Ameca burrito and omg it was enormous. It was made of a huge homemade corn thick Tortila. ( wish I could buy some of those alone to take home). He didn't even get close to finishing it, but at least there was enough for all of us to try it and it was really good. Amazing local and authentic Mexican food. You can get traditional dishes along with some unique items. I loved the Mulita which is like a quesadilla. It's 2 homemade tortillas with meat and cheese inside. Ask for peppers and onions on top. Tacos Ameca reminds me of a corner restaurant in rural Mexico or Central America. Friendly staff, local dishes, and everything is prepared fresh. Make sure you watch the tortillas being made. read more

This place has very basic mexican food , not that great flavor i expected more but the food didnt got me into going back. The ameca burrito was disappointing i thought it was going to be like the signature of the house so i order it to try like what i thought was going to get the best(cause it has the ameca name) but it was way too much maseca on the burrito more than half was maseca i couldnt get the crema or the cheese because the maseca was overwhelmingly much, i really thought it was going to be authentic mexican food , but no is just short for mexican food, on top of that i got food disease after eating half of the burrito. read more

The food is great. No questions about that. Parking can be an issue, no more than 20 parking spots. The issue I had was the server gave me not complete orders. I went back to San Jose after 36 miles trip. Opened the bag that missing 2 tacos. Before I left I confirmed my order # 30, they said yes. I called back request a refund to my credit card they said I need to come back, they can only give cash. I explained that I live in San Jose not in Gilroy so not convenient to do that. They advised to call the owner to ask for the refund. This is not good customer service. The cashier or store manager should have the authority to refund the customers. This is too much hassle to ask for a refund of $6.00. read more

Was making a transfer at the Gilroy transit center, so needed something close by. Ameca looked interesting as they had some items on the menu that weren't the usual suspects for Mexican food. Decided on the mulita, described as two homemade tortillas, melted cheese, and choice of meat. I chose chicken. Also got an horchata, which they served me at the order station. Then you pick up the order at the food station. They call out the order numbers in Spanish, mine was trece (13); other than that there were no language issues. (Actually, I can't say for sure they called out mine in Spanish as a radio was playing and I had trouble hearing what they called out, but we confirmed it by the dish name.) It's not a fancy place. Might be the pandemic, but they have only plastic utensils. It made the dish a bit awkward to eat. It's worth it. Because one bite into my mulita and I was hooked. The cheese and meat are between the tortillas, the meat tender and the wok hei made it so flavorful. (Yeah, I know this is Mexican and not Chinese, but whoever rules the griddle here is a total expert; it was done perfectly.) The tortillas were nicely and tastily browned as well. 5 stars. So simple - three ingredients - and so tasty to the last bite. The horchata? Tasty and cinnamony. Big portion. Reasonable amount of ice. 5 stars. I note their tortas are a lot pricier than other places. But after this mulita I would totally spring for one. Friendly service. There was a sudden rush between 5:45 and 6 which I fortunately ordered just before; don't know if that happens regularly. Makes me wish I made it down to Gilroy more often. read more

When we first moved to Gilroy this was the place to go. The food itself was/is pricy, but you got a good portion. They have made the melas smaller, but raised the price. How does that work? Their workers don't last that long and I always see new people there. Maybe that's the problem. The restaurants are horrible to eat at. During the summer, it's unbearable, I could only imagine how bad it gets for the cooks and people working in the kitchen I have not tried the Morgan Hill one yet, but I'm sure it is the same. read more

5/11/17: I've been to Mexico and now I realize it's even harder to say what is "authentic" here vs. not. Usually we see stuff like tongue and pig face tacos and instantly think oh this is the real sht, but honestly, the stuff I had down there wasn't like that either... well I'll put it this way... This is an American's ultra real sht. But before I get to the food, we must talk about what this restaurant is... see, we just left Downtown Gilroy with the "historic" buildings and all cause no one there would frickin' serve us (cause it's after 9pm!?!?)... and so we drove a mile down and got into the more "interesting" part of town where the buildings are no longer the brick and wooden buildings of old, titled in script of perfect penmanship... no... no... this part of town has an entirely different taste of architecture and food. Entering the restaurant it was immediately evident that this melting pot was not the same as the melting pot of Silicon Valley. We got rock dude hobbling around with shorts so long they nearly reach his ankles, and a long mane of curly and unkept flax colored hair that was highly contrasted against his pure white skin. And there was dagger man who stood ordering at the counter with his cute gf. A hunting knife with about a 8" blade hung from his belt onto his right hip, still easily seen outside his camo pants. Unlike long shorts man, I couldn't see this dude's hair cause it was covered under a black beannie. The staff?--behind the counter working the stove and register, some very large women, some women with the stare of a UFC fighter, and all the men were significantly smaller than the women... First, the cashier lady handed me the drink... fascinating. I watched as she ladled the Jamaica juice into a large styrofoam cup, not all entirely making it in. She filled it absolutely to the rim making that beautiful meniscus. Then she proceeded to move her arm towards me, pouring red juice all over wherever she stood. I attempted to take it from her, but as much hands clenched juiced also poured out for me, but now all over me. Rinsing the day away from my hands, down my arms, and onto her counter. She had no facial expression. Luckily the napkins were next to me so I proceeded to clean the sweet sticky mess from my arm while the next in line proceeded to order... 1. Jamaica $3.00: So, licking it from my arm, the dried sweat mingled well with the sweet juicy to produce a nicely salty sweet sensation. The dirt gave it some texture. But I think without my body juices, it's somewhat weak. 3/10 2. Mulita with Pastor $7.50: House-made thick corn tortillas, soft, warm, and a bit sweet. This is great. This made me happy. Two tacos sandwiches meat and cheese, Taco Bell style, but this would be as far from Taco Bell taste as Sizzler's steak is from Alexander's. I'd say it's a hybrid between a taco and a quesadilla. REALLY good. Even the Pastor pork is cooked on a huge rotating contraption like they use for Greek gyros. All how it should be. 9/10 3. Huarache with Asada $9.00: I also ordered this having no clue what it was. When it arrived, I was a bit underwhelmed unfortunately. Appears to be a large open-faced taco. You got the amazing tortilla, just as awesome as with the mulita, but then they piled the veggies and meat on top which just makes you think you're eating some tostada salad. The asada was also EXTREMELY overcooked. Was very tough to eat. Terrible meat. But it did look pretty cool I'd have to say. Check out my pics. 4/10 4. Taco de Chicharron $3.50: THIS is what we all think is the authentic sht. Pork with the skin left on. Lots of skin. It's been braised, so it's not crunchy like the snack bags. Mushy. Sticky. Gelatinous. Mmmmmmm. But what I found most amazing wasn't even the meat--it was the braising liquid. HOLT CRAP. This is some of the most flavorful meat juice EVER. Just packed with spices and rich meat, and REALLY hot. It's so hot my weaksauce friend (a guy) couldn't take more than a bite. Kept saying, oh it's so hot so hot, I can't eat that sht so close to bedtime. Wussie. Look......... it's frickin' amazing tasting. No pain no gain. Stopped here in Gilroy on purpose on our way to LA from San Fran because these tacos are AWESOME!

I feel that when you ask for recommendations the people that work there should tell you that what you're odering is actually not normal size. It's super sized. I ended up ordering too much food. The choriquezo is not good at all. If you're expecting chorizo served with melted cheese in a bowl then you don't want this choriquezo. As far as the taste of the food it was pretty good. Just make sure you ask what size of serving you're actually getting. I don't recommend the choriquezo though. read more

The portion of the food compared to the price of the food doesn't match. I payed $13 for a quesedilla which came from one tortilla. They also charged $4.25 for one Jarrirto. Also, the quality of the carne asada was low. You'd pay $3 for this same meal and drink in Mexico with better quality food. I'd consider other options before this spot. read more

The tacos were delicious on the freshest corn tortillas I've ever had. And their chips were also delicious and fresh. They had a good variety of salsas at their salsa bar. I ordered the al pastor taco and it was served on a homemade corn tortilla. Beware the tacos are big. One taco can be split in two since you get two tortillas. The salsas are homemade and authentic- nothing canned. Definitely coming back to this hidden gem. Only downfall is agua fresa costs more than a taco, they charge $1.30 for cheese and avocado and .65 for grilled onions and one jalapeño chile. read more
