However the three cup chicken and the oyster pancakes were complete misses for me. They also forgot to input our order, so we were just waiting for 30 minutes until I had asked about our food and they realized and they asked for me to repeat my order to get it into the system. On social media, I saw someone recommend this place as "somewhere to go if you're craving Taiwanese food". Ding, ding, ding! I was very curious to check out this place. We arrived around 11:30 am on Sunday, just half an hour after they opened at 11 am, a couple of tables were already occupied. We were immediately seated and served some hot tea. The menu is extensive, with lots of options to choose from. Here's what we ordered: *Taiwanese Style Oyster Pan Fry: Oyster Pancake is something we always order when we're having Taiwanese food--it's one of the most classic Taiwanese street foods. However, not every restaurant executes it perfectly. But I have to say, this is by far the best Oyster Pancake I've ever had in the bay. Crispy on the outside (especially the edges of the pancake) with umami flavor from the oyster. We really enjoyed the sauce coated on the pancake as well. 10/10! *Fried Crispy Chicken: Another dish we always crave. It's bite-sized popcorn chicken with deep-fried basil. It's hot and fresh, 100% made after ordering. It would be a great choice if they had some kind of spicy powder we could sprinkle on top. *House Special Mi Tai Mu: We ordered this because we thought we hadn't tried Mi Tai Mu before. (** Afterward, we realized this is similar to silver needle noodle, which is pretty common in Asia, made with rice flour). It's stir-fried with bean sprouts, green onions, and some sliced pork. The noodle absorbs all the flavors. I could easily finish the whole dish myself. *Pork Chow Mein: This is pretty similar to the Mi Tai Mu, in terms of flavor and ingredients. The only difference is this is with yellow noodles. Overall, I will definitely come back and check out the other dishes next time. I also noticed they're selling meat dumplings and pickles. Most definitely a great dining establishment with the cultural aspects of Taiwanese atmosphere & cuisine. The customer service is excellent as they make me feel welcomed. There aren't many great options in SF, so he was delighted we happened to be in the Milpitas area to try Taiwan Cafe's oyster pancake. We ordered a bunch of food for 3 ppl and loved everything. My favorite was the Wan Luan pork hock (drooool) and the pork blood, intestine, and tofu hotpot (drowned my rice in that sauce, yummm). First time here! It's honestly really hard to find good Taiwanese food nowadays, and the dishes here definitely exceeded my expectations! We came towards the end of lunchtime and were seated instantly. I loved that they had super cute and traditional decor that's authentic to what you'd find in the rural area of Taiwan. Everything that we ordered were eaten family-style and shared across our party. Meat Ball (5/5): I love getting these in Taiwan, and they make it so authentic here. Very juicy exterior. Also the dish is truly all in the sauce, which they did a great job with here. Wan Lian Pork Hock (4/5): This is the signature dish to get (and what the store is named after). As someone that loves the pork skin, there was a nice proportion of meat to skin, and the sauce was made to perfection. Mi Tai Mu Dry (3/5): The noodle is thicker than how I would have liked it, but it was a very nice and chewy texture. The flavor is on the lighter side since the sauce is all in the grounded meat. Pork Blood, Intestine & Tofu in Hotpot (5/5): I always have to order this whenever I eat at a Chinese restaurant. I loved that they cut huge chunks of the pork blood, intestines, and tofu - so they were very generous with the portion size compared to other restaurants. Basil Pork Blood Rice Cake (4/5): The sauce on this was amazing, but I've never had pork blood rice cake this crunchy before. I was going to give it a 3 for the texture, but when I took this home and reheated it, the crunchiness went away and I loved the dish a lot better. Hot Sour Soup (4/5): A staple Chinese dish - I would have loved more sour and vinegar in the soup. Review Update: Taiwan Cafe is definitely in my top 5 for the Silicon Valley area. We came here again with a larger party and tried a few more dishes. Described below: -Combo Fried Rice. My favorite, and definitely a must. Making a good fried rice is an art, and the chef definitely has it dialed. The rice is part-crisp, part-chewy, with bits of salt sprinkled so you get savory surprise bites every now and then. Combine that with just the right amount of oil, and you get mouthfuls of carbs and proteins (chicken, beef, pork, shrimp) that just blow off the roof. -Sticky Rice with Sauce. This is also called a "rice cake" but can be misleading. It is similar to the Cantonese style bamboo leaf wrapped sticky rice, but braised with more soy sauce and packed with some dried, tasty mushrooms. The gravy on top is excellent and adds a bit of sweetness to the rice. Pair with this a protein of your choice. -Iron Skillet Beef. Anyone who has spent time in Taiwan will appreciate this Teppan-style beef, which will come out sizzling and smoking to get your appetite fired up. The flavoring is a bit peppery, with a tinge of salty & sweet flavors. -Shaved Ice Dessert - Brown Sugar. A tried and true classic. Make sure to stir it up before serving your party. Below there will be a mochi/jello and brown sugar mix. The dessert actually tastes better as the ice melts. You will want to try the other variations as well. Closing Thoughts. There have been some rumors in the Taiwanese community that the chef of this restaurant is considering retirement, and that this restaurant will close soon. 300th review! Let's take a look at Taiwan Cafe today. Located in a very lowkey area that is mostly residential, and a shopping center that you probably wouldn't typically drive into unless you were there for a specific reason or place. It's certainly not just a place you'd want to drop by in the spur of the moment, much less, be able to find it on purpose. It's on a road that is connected to N. Milipitas Blvd, and it's literally just a few minutes away (without traffic) if you're going from the Lion Supermarket center to here. The buildings itself are also quite outdated, so you could probably easily miss this spot too even if you're looking for it. Once you walk through the doors though, it's certainly a much different decor and feel to the place. It's a nice wide open area, so there's plenty of seating available. You can have smaller parties, larger parties, it can accommodate them all. When they first opened, not long after, there were already a handful of other tables that had walked in, so it does seem that this place might get busy during the peak times. Just a note, they only accept cash or venmo here, so definitely be ready for that if you plan to visit. The staff here are friendly, and pretty attentive, but when we got there we were the first table, so it's hard to judge. They were still pretty attentive though once we finished our meal and able to flag them down, and ask for boxes etc. No issues with the staff. The menu is fairly expansive. Plenty of options on each page of the menu. The way the food options are separated out are basically by noodles, rice, stir-fry, etc. Plenty of options to choose from, and while Taiwan cuisine is the core of this place, they do have some other stuff that aren't technically traditional Taiwan dishes. Pricing wise, it's not terribly so. Compared to other places that also sell dishes like beef noodle soup, rice plates, and similar Taiwanese dishes, they are right there, and perhaps even cheaper which I will discuss in more detail soon. So let's talk food! I'll break each down one by one. Beef noodle soup was interesting. The noodles were good, the amount of beef in the noodles was very generous, and not to mention nicely cooked, so definitely worth trying at least. The portions of everything in this bowl really makes it worthwhile because of how much food you're actually getting. The one part about this beef noodle though I do have to say is that it's not really a traditional Taiwanese beef noodle. This place feels like it's kind of a partial influence from like Malaysian or Thai style food, which seems to also be influencing this particular beef noodle, as the broth itself is tomato based rather than beef based. I mean, it's not bad at all, but not what a Taiwanese beef noodle would be, so just keep your expectations for that a bit different. Next up, the pork chop noodles. Noodles were good. The pork chop, while not really a fried porkchop like it typically should be for Taiwanese cuisine, was a very tasty one. It's basically stir-fried as well, but done so in a way that keeps it crispy, and also tender. They de-bone it for you too, so when you get the plate of meat, on the surface it may seem like not that much, but you need to consider there are no bones, so it's a decent portion. The soup with this dish though is quite tasty. It's delicious, and I have no arguments at all with this one. The fried tofu, definitely worth it. The tofu they use is quite good, and not overfried or dry. And the sauce it comes with makes it even more delicious. And the amount of tofu you get with appetizer is aplenty. Can be shared with 2-3 people with each person being able to have more than a few pieces. The highlight of today though was the pigs feet. I've had a lot of pigs feet at other places, but this one kind of blows them all out of the water. The meat is so tender and flavored well. The skin on it is also very well made, with the texture kind of chewy but not in a bad way. And again, the sauce that it comes with for you to dip it in, pulls all of it together. Just a delightful little appetizer. While one of the pricier appetizers, I would highly recommend trying this for any carnivores. I would recommend for those in the area to drop by and try out Taiwan Cafe, as I am planning to come back soon in the near future to sample some of their other dishes. The main thing I want to try next time for sure is the Taiwanese sausage which looks great. Pricing wise is comparable mainly because the portions they give you is very fair. You can probably get a bowl of noodles on your own and be fully satisfied by the end of the meal. The fried tofu is a great appetizer to share, while the pigs feet are almost a must for anyone who loves meat. The noodles were great, as the meats for both of them were very well made, though the beef noodles wasn't quite as traditional as I had hoped, but great nonetheless. However, I still love this place, and am psyched that they finally reopened indoor dining after doing takeout only for most of the pandemic. Having been traumatized by too many overpriced BNS letdowns everywhere, I had very low expectations trying their version. I'll be comparing this place with Tai Kee Wonton, which is also a Taiwanese cafe place, very similar to this one. In general, we like this place a little more than Tai Kee, because this place is less salty and less oily. My wife's vermicelli was well cooked and tasty, without being overly salted. We both liked the chicken roll, but I'm not an expert on it. I honestly liked the sauce the most. The roll itself seemed good. A bit crunchy on the outside, while the meat inside was loose and not too dense. The only thing keeping this place from 5 stars, is the chicken with Rice that I ordered. For the good, I was pleasantly suprised it wasn't deep fried. So no breading or coating, it was just lightly fried on both sides. I really enjoyed the flavor very much! And the chicken was moist and juicy as well. The down-side was, I wish there were more pieces! I got 5 very small pieces of chicken. Normally I can portion the rice with the chicken, but in this case, I had FAR more rice after I was done with the chicken. Instead, they gave a LOT of vegetables; 2 types in fact. This place was recommended by the nice ladies at TECO, and it lived up to its reputation! Very authentic Taiwanese. We just wanted a simple meal and ordered based on the kids' preferences. We had the pork hock vermicelli noodle soup, popcorn chicken and egg fried rice, and it was all so tasty and flavorful! The kids gobbled up the popcorn chicken, it wasn't too spicy. Taiwan Cafe has pretty authentic Taiwanese food and dishes that you can't find at other Taiwanese restaurants. I really liked the pork hock and fried tofu with salted egg yolks. Veggies were also not over seasoned and tasted fresh. I was not a fan of the sticky rice with shrimp though as it was too sweet (dishes tend to be on the sweeter side). Everything was so tasty! Honestly it's hard to notice this spot but luckily my Taiwanese friend called us to have dinner here. Their signature Wan Liam pork hock was really really good. The texture was perfectly chewy and soft, and the dipping sauce was a bit sweet and savory. The pork hock was also very flavorful. The shrimp on sticky rice came with generous shrimp size, with tangy glaze on top. I love their salted egg yolk si gua, the si gua sucks up the good flavor from salted egg yolk. We also had their fried basil chicken, amazing! The food was served pretty soon after we ordered. Inside was clean and spacious, only a bit dark. read more

One of the top Taiwanese restaurant in the bay area. We love this place so much that we always over order as we literally wanted to have a bite of everything on their menu. Our favorite dishes includes their pork hock, pork chop dishes, pig's ears, large intestine dishes and taiwanese style rice noodle. read more
