I ordered their signature dish: pig hock and one of the most popular Taiwanese dish popcorn chicken. The pig hock was pretty good. Great flavors and good texture. It also came deboned to make it so much easier to eat. On the other hand, the popcorn chicken was very disappointing. Portion was small. As you can see, it was not full. The color was very dark. Usually it because the frying oil is too old. However, the popcorn chicken smell so good on my way home I'm the car. It smells better it tastes. It was crispy when I got home. I was here with a group of my college classmate in 2019. Tried to visit again in 2020, but the store was closed during COVID-19. My return trip this time was successful. The big change is they only take cash or Venmo payment, and no credit card. I ordered the Wan Luan Pork Hock over rice. The meat was tender with great flavor. The dipping sauce is a favor enhancer, and there is chili sauce on the table if you want to add some kick. The stewed minced pork has a great taste. The dish also comes with stir-fried cabbage, marinated radish, bamboo shot and pickled vegetable. The marinated egg is the center piece of the combination. Once seated, they'll give you a menu and they have plenty of dishes to choose from. I definitely really enjoyed the Pork Chops over rice! The pork chops didn't come with bones, so it was really easy to eat and flavorful! It comes with an egg, some lettuce, rice, and pork chops! We had a couple of side dishes, which were all really good. The Pork Thick Soup didn't say it was spicy, but it was kind of spicy due to the spices. It wasn't really really spicy, but it was manageable. The beef chow mein didn't have enough flavor, so we needed to add extra soy sauce. The black bean fillet was nice, it was flavorful and the fish was soft with no bones. The Sui Qua w/ Salty Egg was also really good, it wasn't too salty, but definitely perfect and the sui qua was soft. While listening to KQED Forum show about Taiwanese restaurant , as mentioned by one of the guest, he claimed Milpitas has a large concentration of good Taiwan restaurant in the Bay Area. Since I was in the area for work, I googled and picked Taiwan Café since it has a good rating with a proud sounding restaurant name. With no exaggeration, I would say it is the worst Chinese Food I have eaten living 35 years in the Bay Area. We have a large concentration of Asian restaurant here and have a good take of what is good or bad food . If this is what Taiwanese food is about, it was a total disappointment. Based on the most reviewed item on the menu, I ordered the Pork Hock with Sour Bamboo. It is the most expensive entrée in the list and was told by my server as one of their most popular dish. Since I wanted to experience the best on the menu, I ordered the Hock with Sour Bamboo. Also I was dining by myself and asked the wait staff how big was the serving. I was told its a big serving of pig leg and definetly i have to bring home the rest. When the it arrived, it was served in a small bowl with a very the tough meat . I had to dig deep and pushed through with the knife to break the meat. The meat had no flavor and looked like it was just a boiled leg just mixed with left over bamboo sour soup. I felt the food I was served without total respect for dining guest. It looked like it was just assembled to pass as the dish I ordered. Maybe they think , I would take it as is and not notice the difference. In short, a non-knowing stupid guest. Totally felt, I was taken. It is bad experience and BAD restaurant. Years ago, there was a Taiwan Cafe on University Avenue in Berkeley. It was a favorite of the China Studies community and many hands were wrung when it closed. So when my wife spotted this Taiwan Cafe in Milpitas, we had to try it. At first, we were certain the place was closed when we parked outside. Their lighted sign was out and it appeared to be boarded up at first glance. I walked up to what appeared to be dark windows and saw, finally, a sign of life: curtains moving. Off to the far right, an illuminated Open sign. Tried the door: Success! We had the fried tofu with salted egg (金沙豆腐). Boneless ham hocks (万峦猪脚) and a melon and ginger dish (姜丝丝瓜). There are a number of Hakka dishes in the menu, due to a Hakka chef in the kitchen. Really good stuff, and unique. Lots of Taiwan accents in the room. I'm coming back! read more

We always come for the beef noodle fix. I used to get the pork chop noodle soup because of the crispy coating. Today however we got the combination fried rice. Beef noodles soup has been great, tender meat, good soup base and noodles softness is right on the mark. The fried rice tastes very good, however I feel that it has been loaded with msg. Came here for takeout one night. They don't have too much stand-alone dishes with meat. I got the Basil Chicken, Tofu Fish Filet with Spicy Bean Sauce, and the Salt and Pepper Spareribs. They were all reasonably priced and took about 15-20 minutes to come out. The interior was simple and down-to-earth, and someone was selling some Lunar New Year related foods to take home in the corner. The food was all decent, not amazing but not bad. The Basil Chicken, which I don't know why they don't just call it Three Cup Chicken, was okay, definitely not the best I've had. It was not as bright and flavorful as I liked it. The Tofu Fish Filet was pretty good, not sure why it's called tofu when I didn't see/taste any in the dish. The spareribs were my favorite, nice and simple but very meaty. The only downside was that it looks like they skimped on the meat for this, with 75% of the amount of the other two dishes. However, with all three dishes, it was enough for 5 meals with our own rice and vegetables. I think this place is a nice, simple place for an everyday meal or takeout, but not a place I would go to be amazed. read more

This is a traditional Taiwanese food restaurant that been around for a while. Although the food is not authentic as what you will get in Taiwan, but it is good and above average compared to other Taiwanese food restaurant in South Bay. During COVID, it only has had take out and delivery. You can call on the phone to place your order first, then go pick up. We have order the following: 1.) Taiwanese Style Rice Noodle - This dish is good and quite authentic. The rice noodle is very well stir fried with some minced pork sauce, so it is chewy, moist and flavorful. The overall flavor is balanced and other ingredients that add to the rice noodle give great enhancements to the texture and flavor of this dish. 2.) Combo Fried Appetizer (Chicken, Squid, Green Bean, Blood Rice Cake) - The fried combo is well seasoned and fried that is not too oily. The breading outside for everything are just right, so you still can taste the ingredients themselves for most of them. The flavor for all of them are balanced. The chicken is not dry or too oily. The blood rice cake is crispy outside while soft and chewy inside. The green bean is still has the crispy texture to the veggie and has very light breading outside. The calamari/squid is a little over fried, so it is on the dry side. 3.) Taiwanese Style Shrimp Pan Fry - This is a traditional Taiwanese street food. It did a good job on it: the taste is pretty authentic, the texture for all the ingredients are good, and they are well well seasoned & cooked. This street food traditionally use oyster as the protein source, but I personally do not like it, so I replace with shrimp. All the ingredients inside are in right portion and balanced, so you are not overpowered by any one ingredient. The sauce goes on it use the traditional sweet peanut sauce that is good, which is a very important part othis dish. I would recommend this street food. 4.) Loofah with Salty Egg - I like this veggie itself a lot. The loofah is fresh and not bitter at all. This dish is light, refreshing and very well seasoned. The salty yolk give a great flavor to the dish and not overpowering it at all. Definitely order this dish if you are a loofah lover. 5.) Pork Blood, Intestines and Tofu in Hot Pot - This is a very Taiwanese dish and it is well made. The hot sauce give enough spicy taste that did not overpowered by the sweet and sour taste to it. The overall flavor is good and taste is balanced. The large intestine is clean, fresh and does not has weird taste. The pork blood and tofu are well cooked too. 6.) Basil Snail - This dish is ok. The snail themselves are fresh and tender. But the sauce is too sweet and it is overpowered by the taste of onion and sweetness, so I can barely taste the basil flavor at all. I would not recommend this dish. 7.) Squid Thick Soup - This soup is average. The soup itself is good, but the squid inside has too much fish/squid paste around it, so it only has a very small piece of squid inside. read more

Reading the Yelp reviews, we ordered these: - fried tofu with salted egg (my favorite) - fried chicken (like popcorn chicken, my kids liked this) - fried intestine (5 spiced flavor, nice texture without being too oily) - shrimp fried rice (yummy from the oil they used,lots of shrimp) - ground pork over rice (small bowl, my son's favorite) - green beans (nicely cooked) - Black bean fish fillet (fresh combo of green/red peppers and fish) - fried bread with condensed milk (yummy dessert, hadn't had this for years) - basil chicken (tender chicken without bones but not the best; I think it's tastier with the bone) Previously, we ordered the tofu, pork blood, intestines and omelette with oysters. It certainly has been a while since our last visit in 2019. We happened to be in the neighborhood so a checkout was warranted. Boy, were we disappointed? We ordered similar dishes as last time with the additional basil chicken dish. The fried rice noodles was fine. The bean sprouts was not fresh. Unless you really like a lot of fibers, I would not recommend. Then the basil was not only unauthentic but also not prepared correctly. It should be cooked and served in a clay pot, using ginger/basil/garlic mixture with soy sauce. Instead, a lot of starches were used. Very little basil and garlic, and no ginger were added. The final disappointment was really the House Signature Pork Elbow. It was supposed to be the famous dish for Taiwanese and alike. Unfortunately the elbow was not well cooked, the pigskin was hard and unflavored. Worst yet, there were more pigskin than the meat in the dish. We gathered the inedible pigskin in the original plate to illustrate that. BTW, prices were all inflated for credit card transactions. Waitress was busy, but friendly upon arrival and kept our water full. No complaints at all on the service - friendly, efficient, and professional This is the best Taiwanese food I have had in some time. The menu is larger than I expected and I was a bit overwhelmed coming in hungry! I wanted to try one of everything, but I will have to come back and keep exploring when the mood strikes for Taiwanese cuisine. My brother and I tried this place on a Thursday at 8pm. There was plenty of parking in the small strip mall and plenty of tables. We ordered the Fried Tofu ($6.95) and each ordered the Beef Noodle Soup ($9.25). We waited a few minutes for our food to come out. The Fried Tofu was delicious and the dipping sauce was like other restaurants that had fried tofu. The Beef Noodle Soup was okay because the broth was very light like others mentioned in their reviews. The meat was flavorful and tender and the noodles were okay to me. It's hard to come by good Taiwanese food here, so I'm glad I found Taiwan Cafe! First came here with my visiting relatives from Taiwan, where we ordered a ton of family style dishes. The standouts were the oyster omelette and zhu jiao. Even my Taiwanese relatives approved! I ame here a second time recently with my boyfriend, where we ordered the beef noodle soup, pork chop rice, and oyster omelette.
