I am a fan of this place. I work pretty close by, and I'm always here to get good authentic Taiwanese food. It's way better than Chi in Fremont. Not sure why the ratings there is better than Taiwan Café. I love their Taiwan meatball soup, just like Taiwan's. The shrimp/oyster pancake is great too. Also, my favorite intestines with vermicelli. My wife came across this new Taiwanese restaurant featured on restaurant.com and decided to give it a try today (Mother's Day). It turned out to be a major disappointment and we will never go back again! SERVICE: We went there for lunch. The wait at the restaurant was long because of its fairly recent grand opening, but we patiently waited our turn. When we were finally seated, we noticed that the chairs were greasy, so we asked them to wipe them. The owner said someone would come by to wipe them, but nobody ever did. After we stood there for a long time and realized nobody was coming, we waved down some of the waitresses, but they were all too busy to come by. When someone finally came to wipe them (after numerous failed attempts to get their attention), the chairs were so wet that we had to get someone else to come and dry them for us so we could sit down. This took another 5-10 min while we all stood around the table. This was pretty much the kind of service we received throughout our entire dining experience there. For each request we had to wave them down a half dozen times before we caught their attention, and most of the time they never came back with the thing we requested: water, to-go box, etc. The kids' water didn't come till after they were almost done with the meal (and only AFTER we reminded them over and over again!). The to-go box came after three requests, and the dessert didn't come (despite several reminders) till AFTER we were given our bill and to-go boxes!! There was never an apology for their slow service and mix-ups either. FOOD: The food leaves much to be desired. We ordered six different dishes and everything was WAY too salty and oily. You can find much better authentic Taiwanese cuisine elsewhere such as the Grand Harbor at the Warm Springs Plaza in Fremont . ALERT: Since we purchased a $25 restaurant.com gift certificate with a minimum purchase of $35, we made sure we ordered more than $35 worth to abide by the rule. But when we presented the coupon to them, we were told that they are not valid. The initial reason they gave was that the gift certificate is only valid for the English-only menu. Turns out they have two different menus: the menu in Chinese which features all kinds of Taiwanese cuisines, and the English-only menu that offers the kind of Chinese food typically found at Panda Express sort of fast food places. The fact that they have TWO versions of menus and that the certificate is only valid for the English-only menu is NOT mentioned anywhere on the restaurant.com website or the gift certificate itself! Furthermore, we were only given ONE menu (the Chinese one) when we ordered, which was not the menu (the English-only one) that they honor. Everyone else in the restaurant was also only offered that same Chinese menu. It is a total scam! When we questioned why this was not mentioned anywhere as a restriction on the website or the certificate, the owner claimed it was mentioned on the certificate, and insisted that we read it again--then she just walked away! ALL of us at the table read it again, in case someone misread it, but surely that was NOT the case. Then they changed their response and gave us another reason: the gift certificate clearly states that it excludes other discounts and promotions, so we cannot use the coupon. What promotions? The waitress said the Taiwanese cuisine is considered a promotion. Are you kidding me? Just to confirm, we asked if the ENTIRE Chinese menu was on promotion, to which she answered yes, because it is only offered for a short period of time. So we asked if that means when we come back in the future, they will no longer have the Taiwanese cuisine any more, since they are only offered temporarily as a promotion. Then they changed their response again! This time they said that the certificate is not valid on holidays, and since today is Mother's Day, we can not use the certificate. This is total BS because the whole reason my wife purchased the gift certificate was to use it on Mother's Day, so she had made sure that the certificate is good on holidays (AND weekends too!) prior to purchase. When we showed them our gift certificate where nothing about holidays was mentioned, they simply asked us to contact restaurant.com to get our money back! This restaurant has DISHONEST written all over it! We feel very much scammed, and were very disappointed to say the least. Will never go back for sure! read more

I'm giving this place 4 stars though arguable it could get 5. The reason I give it 4 stars is because I have a western palette and this place clearly caters to those with an eastern palette. This place serves authentic Taiwanese comfort food for real Taiwanese people, of which I am not, or so I keep being told. If you want your fried pig guts, pig feet, blood soup, stinky tofu and all that stuff this is your place. I've had some of these dishes and it wasn't bad. As for the foods I tend to like, I gotta knock off a star because I don't dig their pai gu fan, I prefer the one fried with batter but what they serve here is legit and still good. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant with my best friends for three years now (and continuing). We are never disappointed with the taste. It is very consistent and always impresses, such as their vegetable fried rice which we always order. We also always order the bun with condensed milk 炸銀絲卷 and always tastes good. I have been to restaurants owned and operated by the same owner over the years, and I have been very satisfied with each visit. Their service has always been courteous and friendly, and dish quality has been outstanding. I mean it's probably one of the few places in the Bay Area that serves authentic Taiwanese dishes. One of my favorite dishes there is the oyster pancake that is made with the right proportion of oyster, egg and shredded veggies, topped with a special sweet and sour sauce. I usually like it slightly overcooked because I prefer the firmness of the oysters and the slight burn taste of the eggs. I find they are usually very accommodating in letting me make minor adjustments to the dishes. I highly recommend this place! read more

I really wanted to like this place. I mean, it's called TAIWAN cafe, so I would think the Taiwanese food would be reeeeally good. It looks pretty nice in there, since it's fairly new. Anyways, on to the food. We got pork hock, beef noodle soup, chicken steak over rice, minced pork over rice, and one of the "thick soups with noodles." They were out of a lot of the stuff we wanted from the menu. I really liked the pork hock and the sauce it came with. It was my favorite thing we ordered. The chicken steak was pretty tasty and had a lot of flavor, but the rice wasn't very good. Even the soy sauce egg that came with it wasn't marinated enough so there wasn't enough flavor. The thick noodle soup was REALLY thick. I mean it was almost like jelly, and not very good either. The minced pork over rice...bland. Lastly, the beef noodle soup. Now, I consider myself a beef noodle snob and I expected some really good beef noodle from TAIWAN cafe! I was SO disappointed. First, they used spaghetti noodles. And the broth-it was so bland and watered down. What I did like was the meat. Big pieces and lots of it. Lots of tendon, just the way I like it. Firstly when you walk in it's surprisingly big. There's plentiful seating and even when you come when we did around 6 it's still easy to get a table for our party of 8. So our meal started off well. And from there it just got better. The service was surprisingly efficient and took our order and came with our food super quickly in terms of the quantity of dishes we order. The food itself was great. Lots of the dishes had sauces on the side so the dishes weren't sitting in the sauces and becoming soggy which unfortunately happens. They serve a variety of dishes, some of which are familiar but also some different ones like sour bamboo and basil snail. Those were intriguing, but a little too adventurous for our comfortable family adventure to Milpitas. My personal favorite was the fried tofu. It was crispy on the outside with silken tofu on the inside. The tofu sticks plus the sauce was BOMB. I ate at least 5 sticks and I'm only slightly ashamed. Overall I'd say that our meal was more than worth it. We left extremely sated and even though you have to pay 18% gratuity fee for a group as large as ours it was completely worth it. Plus they take off 5% if you pay in cash so make sure you bring your appetite and some cash. No complaints whatsoever. read more
