Fantastic Mexican food, that we are now hooked on. Definitely the best tasting mex in FiDi. Get the tostada for sure. Th quesadilla and burrito are good too---enjoy the crunch of the fresh veggies in those. The Chile rellenos were a bit too cheesey but I think that's just the name of the game for Rellenos. Coming from California, I'll admit, I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob. I got spoiled living so close to Mexico all those years! Well... I'm homesick from time to time so I've been on the lookout for good Mexican food in NYC to satisfy my cravings but I haven't found anything that has knocked my sombrero off yet. It's a sad situation when the Baja Fresh chain has most of NYC's Mexican food restaurants beat. I ordered from Tajin once and had a good experience. I ordered guacamole (I'll give credit where credit is due, their guac rocks) and a steak quesadilla so I decided to order from them again. This time I ordered a burrito. It was no bueno and for all you NYers that don't speak Spanish that means NO GOOD! My friend had a taco salad that he was complaining about and I feel bad since I recommended this place and was telling him how good it was. The taco salad had broccoli and all sorts of weird vegetables that are never typically in a taco salad. He's from California too and needless to say he hated his and said it was the worst Mexican food he ever had. And in my burrito, they chinsed out majorly in the meat department to the point in which I was having flashbacks to the "Where's the beef?" commercials for Wendy's from back in the day. It was bland, flavorless, and uninspired. The food was so bad that we actually took time out of our busy day to call and complain. The outcome? Well, I don't think I'll be ordering from Tajin ever again which is a bummer because the guac really was amazing! One star for that. However, the customer service was horrendous! We were unable to locate the manager and the guy we spoke to (Fernando) was completely rude and told us to go ahead and write a bad review if we weren't happy with our food. So to whomever the owner is, I'm sorry but this negative review is courtesy of your lovely, bundle of sunshine employee that you have working for you. read more

Wow cannot believe people would give this place one star and are talking about rude staff? Did we go to the same restaurant? This place was super adorable and sort of made me feel like I was eating in someone's kitchen. Ended up going to dinner here with my boyfriend tonight and we had the nachos and he had a steak dish and I had fish tacos. I loved my dish and seeing as my boyfriend finished his, I'll say he did too :). I personally loved both the owners (male and female assuming they are both owners?). My friends and I always go to this place to celebrate birthdays because it is just great Mexican food! The menu is small (good for indecisive people like me) and we always order some variation of the enchiladas, from chicken to beef to cheese, or a combination of the 3. Only a few times have I gotten overcooked beef (like they used the leftovers from another dish) but it is usually juicy, flavorful ground meat. Just went there. No space to sit down and one of the World Cup games was on so naturally the entire restaurant was full. My 5 year old niece was tired from walking all day long so when we found this spot we thought maybe we could stay for dinner. There wasn't any space to sit for the moment but I let my niece sit down. I was approached my the owner and told my niece couldn't sit there because it was only for customers. There wasn't any space for us to sit down in the first place. We were a party of 9. It was unbelievable. I was then made to order a juice... Apple juice worth 3 dollars! I paid so my niece could keep on sitting down. But boy did I feel insulted so I walked out. Tajin is my favorite Mexican place in the entire city! While it is very unprepossessing, the food is hearty, consistent, and delicious. That the prices are so reasonable only adds to its charm. My first experience was when someone offered to pick up dinner. I have since been back many times and will travel from midtown especially for the salsa (made fresh) and chips and get them to go. Or , I'll sit in the dining area and have a beer and enjoy the time with friends. The wait staff is very helpful, but also leave you on your own to enjoy. My favorite dish is the pollo paisano (chicken with spinach & mushroom), which reheats well, but have also sampled the burritos and other items on the menu. In the summer, their watermelon juice (made fresh) is also refreshing. Anytime I am in the Wall Street area, my tummy tells my feet to head in - expecting yummy deliciousness yet again. read more

Been meaning to try this place for a while...had uninspiring food the other night at Dos Caminos and had enchiladas still on the brain!....I ordered on Seamless tonight - and like an idiot I didn't realize I ordered it for "Pick up" not "Delivery"...I called to let them know and the woman answering the phone knew it was me- had been on the phone with Seamless Web and didn't create any drama - sent it right over. I stumbled upon this place in a starving, exhausted state. It was the only restaurant in sight and my feet literally hurt so badly from walking that I couldn't imagine dragging my suitcases around to another restaurant. So I ignored the mediocre reviews here, especially compared to surrounding establishments. I learned my lesson! Not to be nitpicky, but I was seated between a super loud family with three young whiny kids and directly next to a couple girls who were so close to me I could eat off their plates. This would be fine except there was plenty of space all throughout the restaurant. I thought whatever - I just want food. That's when even more problems started to pop up. Two different waiters brought me carbonated water, so clearly they didn't communicate and I also didn't understand what was up with the multiple servers. I was speaking Spanish to one server who didn't understand English at all, yet he acted like he didn't know what I was saying. I'm fluent in Spanish. And every time I asked a question or for something, they would go back and run it by someone else - I'm not sure who?? Also I'm not sure why they didn't know the answers to my questions on the spot - they weren't difficult questions. I asked for hot sauce or salsa with my food at one point and if I would be starting my meal with chips and salsa at another point. Both questions/requests they shot me awkward, bizarre looks. No one took ownership of any given table; service was extremely inconsistent and spotty because of that. Food (chicken enchiladas) was quite mediocre, if not bordering on bad because it was so bland and tasted like something out of cans. I was so hungry that I ended up paying for the chips and salsa, which is definitely unusual to me for a Mexican restaurant to not offer that free along with the meal. I just found the whole experience tasteless in more ways than one and I can't imagine how they stay in business with the skyrocket prices. Maybe it's a Financial District thing and others have noted that there are no other Mexican restaurants in the area... Yikes. read more

We've eaten different style's of Mexican food all over the world and we can absolutely say it;s the worst Mexican food we've ever had. My wife and I went there last week on the advice of Yelp. She had the fajita's,chicken shrimp and beef. I had the taco salad. Her beef and chicken were way over cooked. The meat was dry and like card board The meat is not cooked fresh. They cook brisket/chicken and re-heat it in the microwave. Not a good thing! She couldn't even eat it it was so dry. My beef taco salad had old slimy vegetables on the bottom of the taco shell, that was once I got past the over cooked cardboard tasting beef. The beans and rice were nothing special. I've had better beans and rice at Taco bell. I think a lot of the reviews on here are from the apartment building across the street. I saw at least two people come in from there and the owner was giving them a discount. read more

The best mexican in the Financial District. I am a fan of Tajin's breakfast $5 specials and lunch is great although the seating arrangements are my biggest complaint because you're always stuffed between a few strangers who make it difficult to gracefully take a seat. The year? 2013. The day? A winter wonder of sparkling snow and horrid wind. Our hero? Absolutely famished and in great need of Mexican nourishment. *Cough* ... BEST. BURRITO. EVER. Sometimes you just need a big, fat, juicy burrito jam packed with rice, guac, sour cream, beef or chicken (and? eh? lol), beans and whatever else. I work downtown and could not for the life of me find yummy Mexican food. And unlike most humans, that need air and stuff to live, I need Mexican food to survive. This place? PERFECT! The service is ridiculously fast, even despite the long line of telephone orders and the restaurant area (yes, sit-down) being packed. The employees are so nice and funny, the cooks are too and it is just awesome when you can find this combination because then you know that the people really love what they do and that the food will be absolutely scrumpulescent. I sit here absolutely satiated and very curious to try the other dishes. They have everything from chips and salsa and guac to any and all kinds of burritos, tacos, etc. and it looks like they may have pollo and carne asado/a which are awwwwwwwwwwesome.
