Talay is my favourite Thai restaurant in Vancouver. Sure, you might have to trek out of your way to hit up this little Marpole haunt, but I think it's well worth it! First of all, their calamari is best in the city. Yes, that is a heavy statement that should not be thrown around lightly, but it's true. BEST DAMN CALAMARI. Have you ever dreamed of calamari so soft and so buttery that it melts in your mouth? I have. Many times (I live a sad, food-obsessed life). They also serve up a hefty lunch special that includes your choice of dish, coconut (or jasmine) rice and a spring roll for $8.95! I am always impressed with how consistently good Talay Thai is. The food is always perfectly done, the service is always cheerful, and I haven't seen the prices jump in the 5 years I have been coming here. PS. Get the green papaya salad. So good. I work in the area and definitely take advantage of the $7.95 lunch special often! The lunch special is such a good deal mainly because of the amount of food you get with it. My green curry comes with a spring roll and a large portion of jasmine rice. I cannot say enough about how good the service is. The servers are very friendly and the food comes out quick even during the lunch rush. I recommend the green curry (my fav!) but I've also tried the yellow curry and pad thai (both also very tastey!). read more

My Favorite Thai Restaurant in Marpole area in Southern Part of City of Vancouver. No matter what curry you eat, the curry dishes from this restaurant is excellent. This place is owned by a Thai Family. I talk to different members of the family. I takes me about 25 minutes walk to this restaurant. I like ordering the spicy water spinach stir fry dish. It is around $12.00 dollars to order this dish. The chinese people call the Water Spinach in English, but in Cantonese Chinese, it is called "Ong Choy". This a cheap vegetable to buy, but it takes time to clean and cut before you can cook it. They open for lunch time and close between lunch and dinner and open again at 5 pm. It is not a fast food type restaurant and it is very cheap. There are many item in the menu to pick from. Most of the restaurant in the Marpole area are Chinese or Japanese restaurant. Like the rating says, its "a-ok". Service is was wonderful. The girls were very friendly and service was prompt. Spring rolls were the best part of the meal. The pad thai might be good for some people but for me, it can be improved. The thai style iced coffee was alright. For me, I would prefer it if it was more creamy. This place is a gem! Authentic Thai food with great service. It is completely unassuming, which is why you can always find a spot to have a great meal! I am worried that a lot of other people will find out about it and I will have to fight for a spot, however I am willing to live with that as long as those ladies get the recognition they deserve! I was craving Thai today, and looked to yelp to see if there was anything I should be checking out. I decided to give this place a try. I will be coming back for sure! Whenever I try a new Thai place, I always order Pad Thai, and Green curry as test dishes to see if I like the way the restaurant cooks. I have to say they were both really great. Neither was the best I have ever had, but both are pretty great compared to what I have experienced in this city. We also decided on ordering the chicken satay (blech... way too curry based. It was cooked well, but just not to my taste) and the chicken and Chinese sausage fried rice (WOW! SO GOOD). I also got a Thai iced tea, which was average. The people and service were great, and the restaurant was cozy and comfortable looking. The decor was average, but I don't really care about that when checking out neighbourhood spots like this. I went to this restaurant with a friend. The ambience is nice with some Thai decorations on the wall and the place is cozy. The server was friendly and attentive. We had the deep fried prawns with sweet and sour sauce and chicken satay with peanut sauce. Both appetizers were delicious. Then we ordered the dish with meat and spinach smothered with peanut sauce and two bowls of Jasmine rice. That was tasty too. We also ordered Thai coffee and beer and those drinks were refreshing. The restaurant is reasonably priced, the server is attentive and the dishes are scrumptious. I'll definitely come back here again. Love their pad Thai! I've eaten here and had take out and it seems like the portions were bigger when taking out. The take out lasted two meals and we finished the pad Thai easily when we ate there. Quaint little Thai place in Marpole. Been here a few times and the food has always been really good. The servers are always sweet. We had the Seafood Pad Thai and and Prawn Green Curry with eggplant and veges, #20 on the menu. My favourite is the steamed coconut steamed rice, always goes really well with the curries. One of the regular places that my sister and brother-in-law frequent since they live in the area, and they have assured me that the food there is consistently yummy. Comparatively to my experience with NY Thai food, it seems pretty good, nothing that blew my mind as being super different or amazing, but lots of solid options. We started with some appetizers of fish cakes (tod mun pla) and spring rolls (por pia tod), which came out super piping hot, and were tasty. My brother in law had the Paneang Salmon, my sister had the Kaeng Massaman (chicken massaman curry with lychees), and I had the kaeng daeng phet (duck red curry). Everything was good, though I did feel like my duck was not the most fresh. The salmon, on the other hand, was pretty awesome and tasted much fresher. My family, not knowing any amount of restraint, then ordered two desserts, the fried bananas with mango ice cream and the jackfruit with sticky rice. Yum. Decor is sort of meh, and I would probably typically give a place like this a 3 - 3.5 star rating....however, the service was excellent and definitely pushed it up a star or so. Food came out quickly, water was consistently refilled, and one of the waitresses came and talked with us for quite a long time telling funny (and rather graphic) stories. Fun times. read more

Went here for the first time last night. It's a wonderful, cheerful little place. I'm not an expert on Thai food, but, it is the best I've had and seems very authentic. Also, I like to support a little place like this rather than the chain places. We had the Kaeng Kari (yellow curry) , Kaeng Kiew Waan (green curry) and two orders of coconut rice. It was all beautifully presented. We ate half because the servings were generous and took the rest home. A little later in the evening, this wonderful food was calling to us from the fridge, so we ate the rest of it. I woke up in the morning wishing there were still some leftovers for breakfast. I love Thai food and have been to Thailand many times. I would say this is the most authentic Thai food I have had in Vancouver and is owned and run by a Thai family. I called yesterday to see what time they were open till, and unfortunately couldn't make it last night, but their recording did say they are now open 7 days a week. I've only had their lunch, so I'll base my review upon that. The price was great ($8.50! WHAAAT), and the food was all right. I had the Kaeng Daeng (red curry), and my boyfriend got the Pad Ped (stirfry). Unfortunately, my boyfriend got more of the green peppers than the meat and the rice, so he wasn't very happy with his dish. We went in without a reservation on a busy night when it was full, and they refused to turn us around. They welcomed us with a smile, and said we will get a seat for and your wife right away. Great start.. I had the Kaeng Khieu Waan - Green curry in coconut milk with eggplant (I added chicken) and the steamed brown rice. WOW!!! Seriously the most authentic Thai I've had since visiting Thailand in 2013. Service was amazing and I would recommend this dish to anyone. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Like others have said it's not the fanciest place but wow! Quite a few tables were full but we were seated right away. Service was excellent. All I have to say was it was quite possibly the best pad Thai I have ever had in my life- ever. It was perfect- the noodles were the proper ones, it was sweet sour salty, saucy but not oily. There were 5 perfectly cooked prawns and the proper chewy tofu or radish I wasn't sure. Fresh bean sprouts and peanuts topped it off! AMAzing. I thought this is suppose to have a strong peanut taste but there was none. Did they give me a yellow curry by mistake?? #37 Pad Thai Vegetarian (Thin rice noodles stir-fried with tofu, egg, bean sprouts, green onions, ground peanuts and tamarind $12.95 4/5 - Same price for chicken and vegetarian but I ordered too many chicken. Nothing can go wrong with this but also nothing special enough to talk about. There were broccoli, cauliflowers, carrots, beans, tofu. I had a strong craving for Thai after Lhy from earlier in the week so I decided to order some take out. This was very disappointing.
