Restaurant is usually a home run but this visit was quite a let-down. Server avoided us and the food took a long time to arrive while the restaurant was relatively empty, I ordered the salmon salad and maybe got two tablespoon chunks of salmon, while the picture in the menu shows a nice filet on it. Got more bacon than salmon and it was $20. F that. My mom got the cheeseburger and she liked it, but it was nearly $18 for it. Very disappointed as this was such an amazing restaurant previously. Husband and I realized that we've never been to Tallyrand, which appears to be a 60+ year old Burbank institution, so we went last night and sat at the bar. I absolutely LOVE old restaurants with dark interiors, cozy booths, lots of wood and even more charm. Give me those over rooms of blank white walls and cheap tables and chairs any day! The menu is everything you'd expect from a diner menu, and more. And with a full bar! There were a few beers on draft and a few specialty cocktails. That evening's special, according to the neon board, was pot roast, which you could order in the form of a quesadilla, a dip, a sandwich, or a twister (what is that? Hell if I know!) I went with the steak sandwich, husband went with the hot turkey sandwich (marked on the menu as Huell Howser's favorite), and we split zucchini sticks. There was a photo of the hot turkey sandwich on the menu and I thought it was an old, washed-out photo, but no.... the sandwich is smothered in white gravy, over a bed of mashed potatoes, and needs a fork. It came with a side of cranberry sauce and the turkey was astoundingly juicy and tender. My open "sandwich" was a large, thin steak served over two pieces of cheesy toast. Steak was a lil dry but worked just right with the crispy, soft cheesy bread, and it's what I expected from a diner steak. The zucchini had much more crunchy breading than identifiable zucchini, but was still tasty. There was so much food that we took most of it home and couldn't get dessert, but we really enjoyed it! Our bartender, Chrissy, was friendly and welcoming, and chatted with us, and our server was extremely friendly too. There is a screen by the bar, and we thought it would be a chill place to watch Laker games during the season (unfortunately, we were stuck with Celtics last night). I love diner type restaurants and I wanted to try Talleyrand for my birthday 10/16 after reading the good reviews. What a disappointment and a waste of money. My husband and I ordered the steak with mashed potatoes and spaghetti. For the steak, we asked for medium and it came out over cooked and UNSEASONED! The "mashed potatoes" were like the mashed potatoes from 4th grade lunch - powder mixed with water. When we asked about why the steak was unseasoned, 2 separate servers said because their customer base is of the older demographic so they don't add salt. #1 We are in our 30's so we don't look old and #2 you should always ask the customer if they want their steak seasoned or unseasoned, knowing that you typically cook it unseasoned. Give us the option and don't assume we want a tasteless steak for $30. The spaghetti was okay. The sauce to pasta ratio is off and I had to ask for a side of sauce. It was nothing special, just regular spaghetti. Seeing the steak dish not eaten as well our questions about its flavor, you'd think it would warrant one of the servers to offer us recooked steak or a refund for the dish itself. But of course they didn't. As a long standing restaurant, I suppose they have a way of doing things that work for them and their loyal customers. I always heard how good this place was but never got a chance to visit until now. Very busy which means business must be good but not reflective in the staff. They were more on the robotic side going through the motions and my waitress no smiles but getting the job done. I made a foolish decision of trying to get my Thanksgiving dinner here. Well, the place is incredibly popular on Thanksgiving, so much so that the line for to-go orders was around the building. However, I went back on Christmas Eve for another Turkey dinner. The turkey is the real deal. Mashed potatoes were fine. It was close to closing and I think they must have started to run out of stuffing because the portion size I got was the bottom of the pan and small. I asked for extra gravy not knowing that they give you a huge portion of gravy already. I was charged for the extra gravy. I also asked for extra cranberry sauce. The meal came with some sourdough bread. However, they ran out of that and replaced it was a banana nut muffin which was very good. The soup, a chicken noodle one, was great. Service was fine for 7 pm on Christmas Eve. They were busy. It took about 10 minutes to get my food. read more

This is probably the last Classic Diner in Burbank from the past that still brings the same energy. Every time I've gone here with friends or family, I had a fairly decent meal that left me full and happy. The service is polite and even funny at times; it definitely has a local vibe. And I quite like a place that's personable with their neighborhood clientele. You can't go wrong with their food here. If you watched "California's Gold" back in the day on TV, then you should get the Turkey Dinner, because it's still just as good! Their portions are very reasonable for the price and their desserts are also satisfying and tasty! A large party of us come here for dinner and we were sat fairly quickly, which is always nice. The service was great and the staff was very friendly. The food here though, no good. I ordered fish n' chips, and it seemed to be more breading than fish. The "chips" weren't great either. It was all very plain looking and lacked flavor. We were given a basket of bread with dinner. The butter was too cold to spread and the bread was tough. My girlfriend had chicken noodle soup as a side with her dinner. It lacked a lot of flavor and it was comparable to canned soup. It was ok, though was sad it came with brown gravy instead of white gravy. Mashed potatoes were solid. My favorite were the muffins! Delicious chocolate chip one. The cranberry one needed more sugar because the berries were especially tart. But used my friend's leftover cranberry sauce with it, and it was perfect. Excellent cranberry sauce too. This place used to be good. Literally been going here since the early 70's. Fast forward to 2024 and this place is just a dive. Went in on a Sunday. Three other tables had people sitting at them. Just three other tables- so no, not busy in the least bit. Gave our name... cuz there's a waiting list when 12 tables are empty (sarcasm font). After waiting 15 minutes, finally asked how much longer it would be. The 'hostess' (using that term lightly) finally looked up from her phone and walked us to a table. There was really no reason to make us wait- but I guess she had to finish her FB scrolling or IG posting before she would acknowledge real human beings who are paying her wages. Finally seated and it's another 15 minutes before the waitress, for the area, even looks towards our table. I didn't say she came over. No, that was another 10 minutes before she ever arrived. If you're keeping track, we've been here now for ONE HOUR (and 10 minutes). And this place isn't busy. Imagine if it were! Finally, our waitress takes our order and..... we wait. We waited 45 minutes. We see two tables seated after us get their food. Finally- the waitress comes to tell us- our ticket was never given to the kitchen. At this point- AN HOUR AND 55 MINUTES WAITING... for an omelette- we're done. We're leaving. We will never be back. And we won't be nostalgically sad when this place closes down. I have only been there in the mornings and have had great hot cereal, great eggs and potatoes and they have great muffins. Nice to have a choice of toast or muffin. So my sister and I came on Sunday and they told us to sit anywhere we like and so we did and it wasnt even crowded. The table had 4 checks on it for other tables and they didn't even give us a menu, we waited for like 10 minutes for a menu. The server was nice took our order. My sister got a garden burger which was dry. I got a turkey dip which I did like and probably will go back for since I stopped eating red meat for medical reasons. A special place for my granddaughter Jade and I. So special that it inspired her to write this: Walking through the glass doors of the Tallyrand, I smell the scent of fresh baked bread and delicious breakfast. I hear the sounds of people talking, dishes clattering, and food sizzling on the kitchen grill . We smile and say hi to the host. My Grandpa stops to chat while I head back to our spot. I pass by the diner counter where people sit facing the kitchen. Around the corner, I look for our favorite server. When I see her, I call out her name, "Laura!" She looks at me with a big smile on her face and comes over for a warm hug. She squeezes me and says "You're getting so tall! Just you and Grandpa?" My Grandpa catches up to us and Laura points to our favorite booth in the back corner. The booth has red leather seats with a brown wooden table, and the wall behind it is a mirror. It's a big booth, but we get it all to ourselves. She asks "How was riding?" as we scoot into our seats. By now, I'm hungry from all that work at my horseback riding lesson, and my stomach is growling. Laura brings my Grandpa a menu, but she already knows my order. "Your regular?", she asks. I say, "Yes, please!" She knows that means the Number 2 with bacon, scrambled eggs, and French fries instead of breakfast potatoes. My Grandpa orders his food and Laura says, "You got it!" The next few minutes feel like forever, but our food comes out quickly. My mouth is watering as I take my first bite. I feel happy and I feel like I'm home. read more

I am late to the party, but I just recently discovered 'The Tallyrand' via the 2010 Huell Howser episode about it that is on youtube. I had driven by the place many times over the years, but didnt realize what it was. After watching the episode a few weeks ago, I stopped In to give it a try and have returned several times since. It feels like an old school diner in its set up and the history of the restaurant is wonderfully apparant. Its a bit like stepping back in time. I am not the biggest fan of diners in general but the food here is definitely MUCH better than the standard, greasy spoon. I've had the awesome hot turkey sandwich, the boneless breast of chicken and the Super Melt. All were great and the cinnamon roll that I ordered for dessert on one visit was also excellent. The service has been good each time and the staff, very friendly. I've seen some people on here complaining about the prices, but I think that the quality of the food is more than worthy of the price. As noted above, this is not diner food and to compare it to somewhere like Denny's is misguided in my opinion. Plus, I eat at a lot of restaurants and 'The Tallyrand' is definitely not expensive as compared to comperable establishments. Ultimately, 'The Tallyrand' is an old fashioned, excellent restaurant!
