    Steak and beef ball pho
    Christina L.

A hearty meal before a night out and rainy week in February. No wait on a Thursday 6:15pm and my order came out quickly. I guess the broth is already made and ready to go. Plenty of seating, it has a very warm feeling. Ordered a steak and beef ball pho ($16.50). The broth has good flavor, a more sweeter flavor. I would prefer a bit more noodles and bean sprouts, but plenty of pho for me. The steak pieces were tender, the beef pho were not as chewy compared to other pho places. Overall, solid option for food in Castro.

a pretty casual and small vietnamese restaurant in castro, I think it leans towards american viet tastes as it's not super authentic. we got the pork vermicelli bowl ($16), five spice chicken pho ($16.50), and imperial rolls ($8 for 6). the pork was missing some depth of flavor and the rolls weren't the best texture

Five spice chicken was very good and flavorful. I added it to the spring roll and made it a meal!

Friendly fast service. The vermicelli with grilled pork was good and chock full of veggies with tasty fried onions and nice thick cuts of grilled pork.

We were nearby, so we came back here, and it's still a decent pho spot, though nothing really stands out about it. The service was fast, and the process was easy since you just go in, pick a table, and they come take your order. They stayed pretty busy the whole time we were there, maybe because of the location.

Was en route back to our hotel in Union Square and wanted something hot for dinner like ramen or Pho and found this place right around the corner on Castro St (I prefer Pho over ramen any day). Was not too busy but not too empty with plenty of indoor sidewalk seating and a couple of tables inside as the wind was picking up and breezy outside. Our server was super sweet and told us to take a seat wherever we'd like. Our order was promptly taken and we started off with the spring rolls and they were cut up into six big pieces and huge! I ordered the chicken pho with white meat and BFF ordered the combination pho and both came out quickly with the toppings on the side and portions were huge as well. Pricing is on par with other restaurants (about 15 bucks for pho) & it was delicious but was missing just a tad of flavor and I think it was the anise that most Viatnamese restaurants put in their pho. I highly recommend this place for their food and support of the LGBTQ+ community (which business wouldn't be in the heart of Castro) with PRIDE flags inside the restaurant and being so warm and welcoming.

Really really like the pork belly sandwich. Quick bite, filling and tasty! Pho too was satisfying enough and good amount of seating to not have to wait too long to enjoy some comfort food :)

This was so good that I went back two days later to have more. Right on Castro. Easily accessible. They have an area that they open up the windows so it's like you're eating outside. The staff is amazing. Very attentive and helpful. Both times I ate there I went away stuffed. And the food has just a great flavor. The ambience is great. I think it was the best. Pho I've ever eaten.

I absolutely love Tanglad! Been going here for 4 years and love getting the #14 with a Thai milk tea during the cold weather. Their pho does come in a large bowl but their broth is so flavorful, their ingredients are very fresh, and it will definitely fill you up! Their staff are very welcoming, fast, efficient, and always make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your food. My queen Kitty has definitely made my experience here so memorable and has me coming back. I'd 100% recommend this place if you love soup or if it's cold out and you need something to warm you up!

I've not had enough right, but I have to say the garlic noodles. Here are the bomb. They spice chicken with the garlic noodles at an affordable price was quite a tasty treat on a cool summer day in San Francisco. The service staff are quick to show you to a table, which I've seen another time before when I've been here, and it has a nice casual atmosphere. You can sit closer to the street for a cooler experience or seat deeper inside where you can be a little more warm. overall, it's a nice casual place for quick service and scrumptious food!

First of all, I want to point out that the name of this restaurant, tanglad, translates to 'lemongrass' from tagalog, which I find inappropriate and misleading, considering that this is a Vietnamese restaurant in the Castro. If they wanted to emphasize authenticity of the Vietnamese cuisine, then they should've named it sả, the Vietnamese word for lemongrass. Aside from the incorrect linguistic nomenclature, the service was great. The food, however, was unfortunately subpar. The bun rieu tasted watered down, and the vegetables were undercooked. The bun bo hue wasn't much better. I'd say the egg rolls were honestly the best dish we got. Not super impressed overall.

The spring rolls were a lil expensive but they have generous amounts of shrimp had some fried rice paper in there which created a unique texture i really liked. Would absolutely recommend them. I tried out the beef pho and also the seafood pho. I thought the beef pho was okay the broth was good and true to the flavor but it felt a little watered down. The seafood pho had a good broth and I liked the veggies added but the proteins were okay. Overall would recommend, pretty decent pho for the area!

Very friendly staff here and good service! The ambiance is nice too with a living plant wall in the front room. Super cute!

Glad we came earlier in the evening. The decor in the restaurant was beautiful! Loved the bamboo chandeliers. Our host was really nice. We told him that since it's our anniversary that we will go all the way and order the Phozilla!!! We also ordered peach green tea lemonade. As we waited, one of the server handed us a Lychee Coconut Freeze, a complimentary drink to help celebrate our anniversary. That was really sweet of them. This drink tastes like a dessert. Yummy!!! Wow, when our Phozilla came, it is huge! The lobster, beef rib, bone marrow, filet mignon and brisket was beautifully arranged in this big round bowl. Bowl is big enough to feed 4 people. We started with filling our bowl with the soup and noodle. The beef broth was flavorful with the green onions and cilantro. Next the rib was full of meat and tender. The lobster was cooked perfectly, sweet and delicious. Then dip made with butter and sweet chili elevated your taste buds. The bone marrow was savory and velvety in texture. The filet mignon melt in your mouth and the brisket was tasty and tender. It was a lot, but we devoured all the stuffings except the noodles. We had a lot of noodles left. It was just too much noodle for 2 people. Overall this was the ultimate meal. We loved it and enjoyed our dinner. The lychee at the end cleansed our palette and we left the place satisfied. This is our second time and we will be back!

This older man walks around very ambitious with his little credit card terminal ready to charge anyone who is anyone. He gives no receipt. He is the owner and the waiter. But he does not give any service and just expects tip. All he does is walk around and collect money & does the very minimum. I've given this place multiple chances over the years, but unfortunately each experience has been uncomfortable in one way or another. The first time was around 2022. My family and I arrived about 30 minutes before closing, and the owner told us he would still serve us. After seating us, though, he immediately pressured us to order quickly and told us we had to eat fast because they were closing. I was with my elderly relatives too so just turn us away? If that was the case, it would've been better to simply not seat us. Don't be greedy just bc you want a few bucks. Another time, my husband called to order Hanoi-style pho to go, and the owner responded with unnecessary attitude, saying that's the only kind they serve. LOL, ok. The interaction felt rude for no reason. Most recently, we came on Mother's Day. The dishwasher/staff member was also unfriendly. The bun cha was decent according to my mom, and my husband said the beef stew noodle dish was okay, but my pho lacked flavor entirely. I wasn't expecting it to compare to pho in Vietnam or even San Jose, but it tasted very bland so I didn't finish it. The service from the owner continues to be the biggest issue. When we paid, he stood over us while I counted cash, so I felt pressure to count fast and add tip quickly. He left then came back a few seconds later then quickly grabbed the money without even asking whether I needed change and disappeared faster than the wind. The whole interaction felt awkward and pushy. He has a very strange personality. He's honestly very sleazy and has bad energy After several experiences like this, we won't be returning.
