Absolutely delicious and amazing and wonderful Vietnamese food! We got the veggie bun and garlic noodles and we were both genuinely surprised at how tasty (and unique) the flavours were (compared to other Viet places we've gone to). It's a tad on the more pricy side but the servings are generous. We were pretty stuffed by the end and very happy with both the quality of the food and the service. Had a late lunch at Tanglad and had a really solid experience overall. I ordered the beef and shrimp noodle bowl, which was pretty good. Service was quick and easy from the start. We were able to choose our own seating, which was nice, and didn't wait more than about 5 minutes to get our drinks. Another 5 minutes after that, someone came by to take our order, so everything moved along smoothly without feeling rushed. There's seating inside, but also a porch right along the main street, which is perfect if you catch a sunny/cool day. The location is a big plus too. It's on the same street as the Castro Theatre and surrounded by other restaurants, dessert spots, and bars, so it's a fun area to hang out before or after your meal. read more

Was en route back to our hotel in Union Square and wanted something hot for dinner like ramen or Pho and found this place right around the corner on Castro St (I prefer Pho over ramen any day). Was not too busy but not too empty with plenty of indoor sidewalk seating and a couple of tables inside as the wind was picking up and breezy outside. Our server was super sweet and told us to take a seat wherever we'd like. Our order was promptly taken and we started off with the spring rolls and they were cut up into six big pieces and huge! I ordered the chicken pho with white meat and BFF ordered the combination pho and both came out quickly with the toppings on the side and portions were huge as well. Pricing is on par with other restaurants (about 15 bucks for pho) & it was delicious but was missing just a tad of flavor and I think it was the anise that most Viatnamese restaurants put in their pho. I highly recommend this place for their food and support of the LGBTQ+ community (which business wouldn't be in the heart of Castro) with PRIDE flags inside the restaurant and being so warm and welcoming. read more

First of all, I want to point out that the name of this restaurant, tanglad, translates to 'lemongrass' from tagalog, which I find inappropriate and misleading, considering that this is a Vietnamese restaurant in the Castro. If they wanted to emphasize authenticity of the Vietnamese cuisine, then they should've named it sả, the Vietnamese word for lemongrass. Aside from the incorrect linguistic nomenclature, the service was great. The food, however, was unfortunately subpar. The bun rieu tasted watered down, and the vegetables were undercooked. I have been going to Tanglad since July 2022 when I first moved to San Francisco. There are a few reasons as to why I have kept coming back and introduced many of my friends to this restaurant. First, the food itself is incredible. The portions are big, so you can either finish it if you are hungry or take leftovers home for another meal. In addition, every dish is made with care, and that is noticed through the taste. My favorite dish is the #23, which the staff have taken note of. Second, the service is THE BEST I have seen in SF. Not only have the staff taken the time to get to know me from my visits, they do their best to make every guest feel like at home. I often stop by when I get the chance to say hello because of how incredible and amazing the staff are! You really do not get that everywhere. Third, the restaurant itself is so beautiful. There is setting inside the main restaurant in which you can see the food being prepared and taken to their tables and the fun decor on the walls and counters. There is also a setting area in a cool greenhouse-like space with a fun plant-filed wall. Lastly, the food is extremely reasonably priced. In many places in the city, dinner for two can cost closer to $60-$70. Here, dinner for 2 has always been closer to $35-$40. That is a huge win. I write this review as a true enthusiast of this restaurant. I hope others visit and experience similar experiences as me and continue to support. read more

The packaging was mostly fine--although the bean sprouts, jalapeño, and lime packets were a bit messy with some red oily residue, nothing had leaked. I appreciate Tanglad using phin filters, but something wasn't right. Either the brewing is off, or the coffee quality isn't excellent. I asked the server to remake my coffee, only to come out tasting about the same: bland. It wasn't bold enough and lacked condensed milk. * Spring Rolls - The spring rolls were freshly made but lackluster, mainly due to the peanut dipping sauce. It wasn't flavorful. * Lemongrass Pork Banh Mi - The baguette itself was ok. The meat had some lemongrass flavor but could be more flavorful. The pickled carrots and daikon were good. However, the entire banh mi just looked a little sad. It could use more protein and topping. View photo. * 5 Spice Chicken Banh Mi - The same goes for this Banh mi. It just lacked protein. There were only several pieces of chicken in the sandwich. The flavor of the five spices was subtle. It needed more seasoning. Overall, the lunch was an average one. Have I had better? Yes. I really want to like Tanglad since it's so convenient in the Castro, but on both our visits, the food has been so disappointing. Our first visit, we tried the pho and the broth was lukewarm, thin, and salty. Beef was overcooked and dry. Our recent visit, we tried the vermicelli with grilled pork and spring rolls, and the meat was again dry (how is your pork dry?), and the 3 rolls were little stumpy nubs of chewiness. The nuoc mam was watery, and uf, it just didn't work at all. The garlic noodles lacked any garlic flavor and seemed to immediately disappear into a lake of oil. Normally it's an oily dish, to be fair, but there's usually a flavor payoff. Instead, it tasted like a poor rendition of chow mein. The grilled chicken we got with the garlic noodles were...dry (there's a theme here), and the skin of the chicken had already waved goodbye and stayed behind on the grill. Don't be tempted by Tanglad's convenience, and head into the Mission to Thanh Tam II. It's worth the walk! read more

So tasty and healthy-feeling (I left with a full belly but didn't feel stuffed or overly heavy). My favorite was the garlic noodle dish with lemongrass beef; a delicious Vietnamese classic with garlic butter-laden egg noodles stir fried with their house sauce, green onions, Romano, and veggies (bok choi and broccoli). I ordered it with an egg, and all together with the sweet lemongrass beef, it was a meal I would order again and again. We ordered the Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sandwich) with the same lemongrass beef and it was mouth-watering as well, the cilantro, cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots, and meat melding together perfectly inside a super light and fluffy baguette. One of the most beloved Asian food in the Castro, focus heavily on Vietnamese food. You really have to try out their Pho, great portion, generous with protein. BUT my highly recommended dish is def the garlic noodle, you can pick different protein. It was just so heavenly garlicky enough that might still able to go on a date with tha breath. We got seated right away, and the interior aesthetic is simple + minimalistic. The menu isn't excessively long and prices were very reasonable. The staff were very kind and sweet, and our food came ridiculously fast, within 5-10 minutes. we ordered the chicken pho, combination pho, and spring rolls as an appetizer: - pho: HUGE portion size, there was no skimping out on the noodles or the meat. the noodles were on the thinner side but so soft they melted in your mouth. The meat was thinly sliced and not chewy at all. Broth was warm and rich, and the pho came with plenty of bean sprouts, basil and green onions, which I love. - spring rolls: 2 very incredibly large spring rolls that are sliced into 6 pieces total. There was a lot of filling but that definitely made it harder to pick up and easier to spill out.
