One of us had a local beer, an iced tea, and another Tarbell's chardonnay. We started with parmesan soup, it was light and refreshing. We had the famous hamburger, smash burger, and the famous BLT. All were great food options. We split mixed thick cut and thin cut fries and chicharons. The sirracha ketchup was perfect. The chef special bbq bacon burger was divine. The bacon was so good. The slaw, which I think could use a touch more vinegar (personal preference) was so delicious. The challah bun was perfect. Best burger I've had in Phoenix. The cut of the thick fries made them cook well and even. And the fact you had malt vinegar on hand was a plus. Tarbell's Tavern and Tarbell's has been on bucket list to try. Finally, I had the opportunity to go and it was such a let down. I had 7:00PM dinner reservations for a party of 5. When we arrived we were greeted and seated at a perfect table. We felt rushed with our server, then ignored to the point I had to wave down another server to order more cocktails and to get the bill, especially knowing we were the last seating. Our server's demeanor was like he was doing us a favor throughout our meal. We ordered a Cosmopolitan and a Titos Martini, Slightly Dirty, Shaken cold with extra olives on the side. The Martini was delivered by our server in a very rushed fashion, spilling it on the menus. In addition the martini was served in a whiskey tumbler with ice. To note though: my Cosmopolitan was perfect. Food to follow were 3 Classic American Burgers, the Seared Chilean Sea Bass and 1 Side of Thin Fries. The food was good, was it a WOW? No. Especially not for the price of just a burger on a plate. We had ask our server for separate checks for the party of 3 and then a check for my friend and I of what we ordered. First off, my friend had 2 martinis, why was one $11 and the other $15. We got that adjusted. In addition, my friend had a double burger, no fries, but realized we got charged for Fries after we got home and I was reviewing the bill. I asked my the party of 3 if they got charged for fries also and yes they did because they ordered them. I was really excited to try Tarbell's the tavern. We weren't able to get a seat right away and we got a bottle of wine for the table. Our server was very nice and helpful with the menu. The menu is great because it has a lot of food from a lot of different cuisines which is great when not everyone wants just one type of food.I ordered an Asian noodle dish, which was Absolutely amazing. Excellent moderately upscale & classy restaurant choice in the area - especially for their double burger which is outstanding. The Tavern has a Hillstone type feel with American food, solid cocktails and an extensive wine shop with unique and rare wines as well as tequilas. The bartenders are always well trained, friendly and make top notch drinks. The biggest complaint from making it a 5 is the value. With the El Tesoro Margarita at $22 and the double burger with no sides at $24, be prepared to pay up. read more

First Visit to The Tavern - An Average Experience I've been a regular at Tarbell's for years, but this was my first visit to The Tavern. We arrived at 6 PM (Wed 8th) and were seated promptly by a friendly hostess near the window (second seat from the wall). Service started off well--our server was nice. When deciding between the burger and the patty melt, I was encouraged to try the burger since it was award-winning. My buddy opted for the patty melt and a kale salad. Unfortunately, the burger fell short of expectations. I was anticipating a "wow" moment, but after the first bite, my immediate thought was, "A Jumbo Jack has more flavor than this." It wasn't bad, just unremarkable--definitely not something I'd return for. The thick cut fries were great. Pork rinds app... meh. To add to the disappointment, the server forgot the kale salad. Overall, the experience was just average. With the Tarbell's name attached, I expected a higher level of quality and flavor. Not sure I'd go out of my way to return. read more

My partner and I have just been very grateful for Tarbell's tavern especially since Dr Pompa endorsed Tarbell's menu proudly serving no seed oils and in its place the use of beef tallow as the alternative along with all beef menu items being grass fed and raised humanly and as well as organic. Well sadly that didn't last long and now all menu items are no longer noted as "Organic and locally grown} now the menu items no longer tout being grass feed beef but rather corn fed. Yep, you heard it "corn fed" corn being the most genetically modified vegetable around and most likely sprayed with glyphosate We are seriously bummed that the owner Mark has given up his commitment to serving a clean fare. It looks like we along with my sister and brother-in-law also will not have Tarbell's at the top of our dining out list for clean, organic locally grown food. Please consider returning to grass fed, organic and locally grown. read more

I loved The Tavern for dine out, though I also enjoyed my table there. Personally, I've fallen for their classic patty melt on toasted rye with sautéed onions. Their classic cheeseburger, pictured below (as a double) is OUTSTANDING! They also make a brilliant coconut cream pie! First visit to Tarbell's Tavern was a week ago. We shared the BLT (best ever!), chicken lettuce wrap (great but too pricey), coconut cream pie (must have at least once), and a bottle of Petit Sirah the sommelier recommended. Noise at a low level so we could easily hear each other.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Back again last nite and happy to say it's just as great and worth the 20 minute drive. We asked to have a dry Riesling ready and their pick was spot on and very reasonably priced at $26. They sell the wines at retail but no corkage. Tried the charcuterie for two and the BLT again. They put together a fabulous cheese board. I know we'll be back soon. Limited menu so easier to make everything great. Valet parking avail if needed. read more

We thought it would be very light , fluffy ! Wrong ! Strawberries, whipped cream between a slab of ???? I love Tarbell's Tavern. Missed the lunch service during COVID. Recently they switched the fry fat to beef tallow. I tried twice but the beef taste is so strong and beef makes me ill. The fries are good if you can eat beef fat but I will miss my Tavern lunches. I watch my cholesterol closely and red meat upsets my stomach terribly. I wish them well and I will miss my lunches. read more

My dining experience at this restaurant never went above one star from the time we were greeted at the door until we left. Our order was very simple. A grilled cheese sandwich, which truly was more pathetic than any school cafeteria grilled cheese. The soup that accompanied the grilled cheese was cold. The lobster roll that we ordered came somewhat hot, and contained a minuscule amount of lobster. The bun was so heavily buttered, that no hint of lobster could possibly come through. Our salad made it to the table, just as they were clearing the rest of our dishes. Our glasses of wine were the most meager of pours! The dessert, consisting of chocolate chip cookies.... It truly looked like someone opened a package of Chips Ahoy and place them in the microwave before they presented them on a small plate. The overall service was incredibly disappointing. Safe to say I will take The Tavern off my list of restaurants to frequent. read more

I wish I had stopped in this place sooner! I've seen it so many times but for some reason just never checked it out. So glad I finally did. Amazing selection of wine. The beautiful part is you can go browse and select a bottle of wine in The Wine Store (they're connected), and then have it uncorked in The Tavern and enjoy a glass (or bottle) with your food. The staff in The Wine Store is extremely helpful and versed in the wines to help you pick out something you'll love. I tried the thin fries and they were a perfect snack with my wine. Also I only got a half order and it was more than enough for just me! Not pictured-I had their homemade coconut cream pie to go so I could indulge at home in privacy lol...don't even get me started. It's SO good. It reminds me of my great grandmothers coconut cream pie so it was instantly comforting. Skip the main restaurant and come to Tarbell's Tavern (entrance through The Wine Store)! No offense to Tarbell's, but it can feel overly stuffy at times and the menu is...OK. Very little at Tarbell's has ever dazzled me. What I like about Tarbell's Tavern is the cozy, intimate space. It doesn't seem to get too packed and if you sit at the bar, you are likely to engage in conversation with another guest or on my most recent visit, Andy, the warm and genuine bartender! The other great thing about the bar is that the servers hang out too and join the conversation. I just love the casual ambiance. While it seems like you would just pop in for a glass of wine, the menu is good. On my most recent visit, I tried the green chile pork (crispy braised pork, grilled flour tortilla, baked Cotija, roasted shishito peppers, cilantro, green chile) and it was packed with flavor. Pork tilts to the heavy side so you don't even need to have much and you feel satiated. The guest next to me had ordered the BBQ chicken flatbread which he described as "enjoyable." While I didn't order any, the desserts look amazing. Tons of wines are available by the wine and glass. Turns out the owner here, Mark Tarbell is a chef, wine expert and a musician among other things. There is 3 businesses here...fine dining restaurant, bar eatery, and a wine store. I met a friend here for lunch and the food we tried were amazing. We had couple of tacos which were one of the best I've had. The homemade corn tortilla was the best part. The scallop ceviche was so flavorful and fresh, it was worth every penny. The coconut cream pie for dessert just put it over the top. Service was excellent. The decor was entertaining. First time at Tarbell's Tavern. We had a team meeting of six for a mid-week lunch. Our server was Nyla and she was a great. Started off with several appetizers including the deviled eggs, the cheese and charcuterie board, and the thick house cut fries with Sriracha ketchup. The deviled eggs and the board were a hit. Everyone had a different entree including the lobster roll, the classic burger, the BLT, Spanish octopus tacos, the chilaquiles dish, and I had the lamb burger. Judging from the comments and clean plates everyone was happy with their choices and the quality of food. There was a side of chicharrones also passed around and they also disappeared. Desserts included coffee and cappuccino with coconut cream pie for most of the dining guests. Probably the best coconut cream pie I have had. Prices are moderate. Sides are extra. We love coming here. The Board is honestly the best charcuterie board I've had anywhere consistently. It's huge so a half board is enough for two. Usually going with that, splitting a burger, and a half order of fries and it's perfect. Everything here is really stellar. Nice place to sit at the bar for a causal bite in the neighborhood. Had a fantastic dinner. Great service. Food was delicious. The charcuterie tray and champagne were a great starter. The chicken entree was locally sourced meat and had an incredible soubise. Atmosphere is very nice and upscale casual. The best part though is that there is no wine list. You simply walk through the retail store which is their wine cellar and pick out a bottle. Love this place! Tarbell's The Tavern has the same quality food as Tarbell's next door, just with a more lounge/tavern feel. You can belly up to the bar, get a (very) nice pour from their extensive wine list (or pop into the wine store next door and grab a bottle from there) and enjoy a great meal. My faves are the deviled eggs (they are addicting!), and the green chile pork stew. The green chile stew is just so luscious and flavorful, it's hard not to order it every time I go :) Good pours, good food....what more do you need?!? read more

We have been to Tarbell's and Tarbell's the Tavern. At the Tavern today on a Saturday afternoon, we enjoyed the live guitar music by an artist we believe was named Frank. Fun songs, good audience interaction, and impressive guitar playing. I had the Scottish salmon, which has always been exceptional. Today was no different. My wife got the bib and butter lettuce salad with avocado and grapefruit with an addition of chicken. The salmon continued to be fantastic. The salad was very good, but was lacking on avocado and grapefruit, especially at $14 for the salad. The extra $9 charge for chicken was high, but it was good and freshly cooked. The honey dressing was delicious, but an overall price of $23 for a salad comprised mainly of lettuce and a chicken breast was high. We still would have given 5* if it would not have been for our bartender not bringing us our deviled eggs we ordered and failing to bring a black porter beer I ordered to us. Those two items would have increased our tab which would have increased his tip. Great music. Great atmosphere. Overall great food. A superb Saturday afternoon. read more

Consistently, this place has impressed us with the quality of food and service. We have realized that we have dining here so often throughout the covid-19 pandemic & outdoor dining only. It has become our "culture" for the last few (many) months...we throughly enjoyed our experience here. The other bonus is that we can try many different wines from the wine store. The Tavern is a casual upscale pub that offers the finest wines, elevated bar foods and more in a rock and roll man cave atmosphere. The Chef/Owner Chef Mark Tarbell is a highly decorated multi award winning chef. He also has been featured in many publications and TV shows including "The Talk" and Food Network's Iron Chef America cooking competition show where Chef Tarbell was victorious and took down an Iron Chef. Today I went with the Grilled Scottish Salmon Sandwich ($19.00) It came on a Noble Bread Bun that was brushed with dill laced creme fraiche. I received a generous piece of GORGEOUS silky melt in your mouth buttery Scottish Salmon. This was the BEST tasting salmon I had in a very long time. It also was brushed with tomato jam that complimented the sandwich very well. My sandwich doesn't come with anything so we shared a side of Thick "Frites St" Fries ($9.00). I have to say that these fries are one of the best best that you can get in Metro Phoenix! They really are that GREAT! These fries have a crispy exterior like no other that is thin and shattering crisp and almost taste like a potato chip. The interiors are very fluffy, moist with a really great potato flavor. On the side is a tasty Sriracha spiked ketchup. My husband had the Green Chile Pork Stew with Tomatilla Salsa, Cotija Cheese and Tortilla Chips ($19.00) He enjoyed the stew but instead of the chips he enjoyed it more with those Phenomenal Fries. Service was efficient and professional. Chef Tarbell is a wine expert. They only sell very good and amazing wines. You can purchase wine next door at The Wine Store and enjoy it at the Tavern without a Cork Fee. I am very torn between 4 stars and 5 stars........I loved it!........Everything was GREAT! Seriously yummy food! If you are thinking about eating here, I recommend having a reservation. We did on a Friday night, so we were seated quickly (even though one in our party hadn't arrived yet). You'll find the wait staff to be very efficient, and of course, you'll find the choices for beer, cocktails, wine by the glass or a bottle from next door all perfectly acceptable. Because you are in a "tavern," have a drink. If you like Reese peanut butter cups, I recommend the peanut chocolate porter (from a can) and pair it with some appetizers. I recommend the Bruschetta Three Ways (classic tomato, olive tapenade, and a chef's choice) and the Roasted Local Beets with Crow's Dairy "quark" and chives. Both were divine, and the beets were so addicting--such great flavor and paired perfectly with the cheese that my mouth is salivating as I write this. Next, you'll have to decide on a main entrée, which will have you squirming in your seat. Which one to choose? So many wonderful choices. Homemade fettucine--final answer (win!--so tasty, and you'll have leftovers). You could be done and quite satisfied at this point, but why stop because look at that dessert menu! Yes, you're stuffed and you're saying "I'm really too full for dessert," but look again. Squint at the line "Cinnamon Spiced Chocolate Mousse with Salted Caramel & Whipped Cream" and just say yes.
