The diner where good taste and class go to die. The 4 and 5 star reviews for this monument of detritus are laughable until you realize that they are made up of long-time Bethesdians who misguidedly feel obligated to protect a relic from their past. Have never set foot in the place until the last three years. I have been three times - the first with an open mind and because it is one of the few late night eateries in Bethesda, which sucks the sidewalks up at 10:00. The other times under duress because the company was starving at late night and did not want to make the trek to the far better Silver Diner in Rockville. Trust me, make the trek. The food runs the gamut of mediocre to awful. Their country ham is fairly good, but the pancakes somehow manage to be greasy. Food comes out to the table either burnt or ice cold. On one occasion, the smell of old rancid cooking oil was so pungent that I was nauseous by the lengthy time it took for the food to arrive. They have no idea how to clean the griddle appropriately because your omelette has a tendency to show up with ingredients cooked in the outside of one end that are not a part of the omelette you ordered. For extra added attraction, it is not uncommon to find hair and other unsuitable additions to your food. On my last visit there, the table next to me found a long black hair in the food and the staff was giving them attitude about taking it back. Not sure how this place has not been cited by the Health Department and the Better Business Bureau. If the food is nothing great, hold your hats for the service. On three occasions, I do not believe I have witnessed acceptable service yet. The waits for food to come to the table - especially given that the place has not been crowded on any of the evenings I have been there - are absurd. Every server acts like they woke up on the wrong side of the bed and are mad at the world. None more so than the guy who sits by the door at the register, who I gather is the owner/manager. So the crummy outlook starts at the top and oozes on down. Completely unfriendly, surly, unprofessional and inappropriate. He barks at people and seems to believe he is doing us all a favor by allowing customers the honor of frequenting his diner. On my second foray there, a server was disrespectful to a table of African American patrons and when called out on it slammed their food down. A lady at the table complained to the manager guy, who responded not at all and just glared at her as though she was something he scraped off the bottom of his shoe. Outrageous! This same charmer has no problem trumpeting his questionable views while people are trying to eat. I suspected the politics of the people who run this diner when the TV is trained to Fox News, the radio is trained to AM conservative talk radio and the walls are festooned with Republicans, but the intrusive loud volume commentary by the manager/owner and his co-horts will confirm it. On my first venture, Mr. Personality held forth about how Montgomery County was just the worst and the liberals all needed to go away. I may not be a liberal (independent centrist myself), but I think these comments are inappropriate to blast in a restaurant and if Montgomery County offends this gentleman so much, tell him to move. On my next outings, the Charmer regaled all and sundry about such insightful topics as women not knowing their place and being too mouthy, more non-stop hate about liberals, and how it is debatable that pedophilia should preclude someone from holding office and whether or not it really is a crime. Listening to this toxic sludge while trying to gulp down their greasy food is a bridge too far. The third time in this joint was the last for me. I would not give them one red cent for either their dubious food or their unprofessional and lousy attitudes. Memo to any establishments - there is a definite need for good affordable late night fare in Bethesda. Please feel free to open ASAP. If the Tastee Diner could last this long with their shoddy food and service, then certainly anyone could overtake them by providing good food and pleasant service. And should the competition impact their business, no loss. On a plus side, there is a solution on how to improve Tastee Diner's food and service. I would suggest a wrecking ball and then sandblasting the site and annointing it with Holy Water. This place and its management are just that indefensible. read more

Tastee Diner definately gives you that "diner" feel. From the "waffle house" type waiters and waitresess, to the loud mouth cooks. Although seemingly small from the outside, Tastee accomodates quite a few patrons. The service can be great one day and not so much the next. The way the waiters and waitresess speak to customers would kind of give you that small town feel (if you like that). The price is great for the quality food; it's not first class but it's good. I frequent the Bethesda the location periodically and will continue to do so for my early morning breakfast runs when in the area. read more

I ordered chicken sandwich and when I ordered it as "crispy chicken sandwich" she corrected me by saying "deep fried" - I wasn't sure if she was being a smart a$$ and correcting me or if they were actually 2 different definitions, they're not. And then I asked what kind of fries do you have, she said "regular fries"- - I've been around long enough to know that "regular fries is not a "type" of fry. Why is this woman such a smart a$$??! After I placed my order she asked my name and I said my name and spelled it out for her (as I do by habit for everyone), then she told me "I know how to spell that, thank you. Try to serve me uncooked raw chicken breast . I told them u need to heat this up .. It stink so badly ! And it was hard to cut the chicken you know why ?Because it wasn't cooked all the way .. And it wasn't even steaming hot .. So that's a no go .. I like my chicken cooked and hot just like POpeyes . Being from NJ I've had my shares of diners, we do have the most in the country. This was my first diner outside of the NJ area. It was a nice diner. The food was ok. I asked for medium cooked scrambled eggs and it was kinda over done. Their sausages weren't links, they were like sausages you get at McDonald's or something. Waaaaack. I was in Bethesda for a week and had breakfast here every day (it was the only breakfast place open early enough). I enjoyed the food and the chatter of the locals. The waitresses are friendly and kept my coffee cup full. The eggs are a bit greasy (but, hey - its a diner), and the vegetable omlette was really good. This is the best local place to go for breakfast or brunch in Bethesda. I have been here a few times already and the service is always great and breakfast selection is very good.
