I used to come here all the time for breakfast and always found the service and food to be what you expect at a diner. Waitresses who were nice (but with "that" certain attitude) who always were efficient and never let your coffee cup get less than half full I, sadly, can not say I experienced that today. Her name is Katie and she ignored me and other customers (except 1) at every turn. I worked in Bethesda for three years, and just moved to Chicago. During my time in Bethesda, however, Tastee Diner quickly became one of my favorite joints. I mostly stuck to their breakfast food and pie, but I dabbled in some of their sandwiches here and there. The restaurant itself looks like it's the inside of a train car, and the servers are fantastic. If you're looking for a good "diner" experience, look no further than this place. Also... This place is pretty cheap and you get what you get what you pay for. On two of the three occasions upon eating here, the eggs needed to be sent back because they were not cooked....at all. Also, the veggies all look canned, so if you're into fresh veggies this ain't the place for ya. read more

I love this place. I have been coming here my whole life. The waitstaff and cooks are awesome. Sunday mornings at this cozy diner have become a family tradition. The creamed chip beef over biscuits is one of my favorites but I also sometimes enjoy two scrambled eggs with cheese. This is also a fun late night food stop - milkshakes and burgers are great! If you're looking for high-fallutin' dining, this ain't the place. Tastee Diner is a landmark establishment. I started eating here about 35 years ago. The thing you grow to love about this joint is that it doesn't appreciably change. I spent many late nights in my youth, sitting here writing letters or reading, while casually dining amidst the well-orchestrated chaos that is the cook and wait staff. Come for the meal---stay for the show. Next time, just stop what you're doing and look around...listen to the banter. What they don't list on the menu is the ambience. Late at night you'd half expect to find a young Tom Waits here, scribbling down lyrics on the placemat. Their evening shift used to be staffed by guys like "Curly," the old bald guy, and "Red," the gray-haired guy. Half the staff were ex-cons, and there was no telling where the others came from. Check your terra misoux-type dessert desires at the door, this is where you can always get a piece of pie, ala mode, and as many coffees as you can drink---and if you've got the time, the wait staff is always willing to engage you in conversation. This is a classic old-school Bethesda experience. Open 24-hours, it used to be one of the few places to get a bite after 9pm! You'll meet a much more colorful crowd here than at the more "refined" options around Bethesda. Love this place for it's hokey atmosphere, cheap (and often mediocre but hey, did I mention atmosphere?!) food, and friendly staff. Except when they're grouchy. It's real. It has texture. The at-table juke boxes are authentic. Go with a grilled cheese or the pancakes and eggs and enjoy the community feel. I've eaten here twice and I'll continue to go back. It's not amazing, but it does have above avg food and above avg service. It has the true, authentic old school diner feel and you can play your own personal jukebox while seated in your booth. How could anyone give this place four stars? We just returned from breakfast at the Woodmont location. Staff was friendly, but it's clear that the appeal of this place is chiefly its location. It was packed to overflow capacity with the walker and highchair crowd, indicating an easygoing personality and stone deafness are basic requirements for patronage. And far worse, this was the most thoroughly average diner food I've ever eaten. Actually, it is too below-average to qualify as average. I'd give this place zero stars, if it were an option. At your run-of-the-mill greasy spoon, ordering eggs over easy --only for them to appear over hard--is par for the course. No; what our table was delivered was food so inedible as to be embarrassing (Hint to 'chef': home fries black on the outside and mashed potato inside = grill too hot). Food here is so atrocious you want to cry. I can't imagine being drunk at 2:00 a.m. would make it better. It'd probably just make me cry harder. read more

Interesting place, with decent food. We came off-peak, were led to the back where there were no other customers. Unfortunately , this was the area where the waitresses congregated and gossiped loudly , about courts, attorneys, kids, customers , etc, with little regard to us. Tastee Diner is my bf's and I second home ;) Whenever we're strapped for cash, don't know what to eat or just plain miss the place, we go. The staff are like an extended family. It's friendly service with an actual smile... Tastee Diner not only fill my stomach with good food but also with CONVERSATION. You can't talk about life or even sports with McDonald's staff... This place is the only official "diner" I've been to. I went around 11:00 pm on a Sarurday. There weren't too many people there and we were seated right away. Our server was an older gentlemen and he was very friendly. I already had dinner and only wanted something light. I ended up getting a malted waffle with sausage. The waffle was ok but I can honestly make better Belgian waffles at home. My sausage was burnt and I couldn't eat much of it. Before coming here, I had heard great things about it. Oh, this is the kind of place that needs to pop up in Dupont Circle immediately: open 24 hours, jukeboxes at every table and most importantly -- super cheap, tasty diner food. I ordered the two eggs + biscuit breakfast (for lunch), and much to my delight, it came with TWO biscuits. YES. My coworkers all enjoyed the meal ... right up until it was time to pay. The nasty old woman working the register completely ruined it for me. We thought we'd all pay separately at the front, but it turned out that our waitress should've split our check. Well, this cashier just didn't let us hear the end of it. She's like the nasty grandma you have who doesn't let you enjoy ANYTHING because if it makes you happy, you're spoiled and don't deserve it. Grandma cashier said our waitess was "new but good" but clearly not that good in her opinion, since she lectured us on the splitting of the check. I understand why the check has to be split by a waitress but I didn't need the lecture or the underhanded remark about our very sweet waitress. read more

25 years ago we lived in Princeton and our Saturday splurge after getting up early to help band birds was to go the Amwell Valley Diner, a classic greek diner outside town. For an NIH committee I have been in Bethesda three times a year for four years and each day I walked past the Tasty. Tonight was the night to try it. It lived up to its look: a classic diner with a middle aged waitress, a bunch of high school kids out for dinner, and a perfect two eggs, toast and corned beef hash plate. My family and I have eaten here off and on over the years with mixed results. It is usually fairly reliable as one of the few late night places for nothing special basics, but my last experience in there has put me off of ever going back. The night shift staff there now are beyond rude and inappropriate. I recently went there following a concert at Wolf Trap along with my mother and a work colleague. When we walked in the door shortly behind another party, we were greeted with a young male server literally shouting down the length of the restaurant like a fishwife at the party that entered before us. He was soon joined by the surly man at the register in doing the same. They were apparently trying to inform the people that part of their party was actually sitting in the other area of the restaurant and rather than calmly walking to their table (where they had been seated) felt instead that yelling in a nasty tone down the length of the building was more appropriate. To say we were all taken aback is an understatement. I thought we had inadvertently walked into someone's home where the family was in the midst of a vicious argument. We were shown to our table at one end of the building. There was only one other occupied table there and they seemed to be annoyed. We waited and waited and waited for a server. The one we did see appeared to be going off duty. Finally, one emerged slowly from the kitchen...with the wrong order for the table already there, which then had to be sent back. Still no effort to come over our way and take an order. Meanwhile, the smell of old cooking oil was so overwhelming, it bordered on the nauseating. Another table was seated behind us, much to the irritation apparently of the greeter/guy behind the register, who slammed the menus on their table loud enough to startle everyone in our booth. In passing, he announced "We are short-staffed, someone will get to you when they get to you!". Of course, if they were short-staffed it would make some degree of sense to close one end of the restaurant and let the two waiters they have work one area...but then that would make too much sense. After a 20 minute wait, our waiter finally apparently had the time from his three total tables to take an order. When one of our party ordered grits, she was informed "NO!" No explanation that they were out, just "NO!" The food took forever to come, the earlier table became beyond impatient with their constantly screwed up order and literally had to stand over the waiter to get him to sit down and work out their check. Our food arrived a ridiculous amount of time later and much of it was cold. Truthfully, the godawful stench of the place had robbed me of any appetite anyway. Getting out was another ordeal. Now with only two tables to wait on, which apparently overwhelmed him it took no less than three tries to get the check and even then it took forever. On the way out after paying, the charmer behind the register was annoyed because when we opened the front door to leave the draft fluttered some of his checks. Not sure if this guy is the manager, an owner or just staff, but he really should not be dealing with customers. Between the nasty attitude, the surly delivery and the dirty looks cast at patrons, I cannot imagine that anyone wants to go in there and dine on his ill will. The majority of the night time clientele (as minimal as it was when we were there) appears to be older high school kids who apparently look the other way at being spoken to and served like they are garbage. Based on this experience, I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone. My work colleague was actually a fan of this place and was absolutely appalled at this spectacle, so I don't think they can count on her business anymore either. read more

What a HORRIBLE experience with a bully of a waiter. I took my two kids (6 and 4) for an early lunch today after attending a nearby children's event. Having been to the Silver Spring location, I knew that this restaurant was suitable for kids. We were immediately seated in a booth in the very back of restaurant. I sat next to my younger child. My son sat across from us, and read the children's menu to his sister. They decided what they wanted and he handed the menu to me. The waiter, wearing Redskins paraphernalia from head to toe, including fuzzy yellow shoes, called over to me from two booths away, "Do you want some coffee, miss?" I responded, "yes please" and started to look at the menu. There was a small black container of sugar, Equal and Splenda packets sitting next to my son's elbow. He pulled it in front of him and started to take the packs out, organizing them by color. We frequently do this and play counting games with sugar or creamer packets, as a way to quietly wait for our order to be taken and food to arrive. The waiter came over and slammed the coffee down in front of me, and proceeded to start shouting at my son for playing with the sugar packets. He stuck his finger in my son's face, yelling at him that "people have to put these things in their food". I interrupted saying, "Don't worry, I'll make sure everything is put back properly," but the waiter kept on shouting. By this time, my son had dropped everything and jumped back in his seat. The waiter angrily and roughly grabbing the packets and slammed back to the waiters' station. Immediately, both of my kids started sobbing. They were terrified. I said to my children as calmly as possible, "You did nothing wrong. Come on guys, we're leaving" and at least two other tables nodded their agreement and said to me, "Yes, that's right". On the way out, I raised my voice at the waiter, asking him who the hell he thought he was yelling at children. Kids play with sugar packets; what kind of 50 year old bully shouts at kids like this? I raised my voice again at the host about why I was leaving with two sobbing children. I got my kids outside, got their coats on and made sure they were safe. Then I went back inside and demanded to see the manager. The manager had gone out a side door, probably at the behest of another staff member who had witnessed what happened and approached me when I went back out. The manager tried to cajole me back in, to sit on the other side of the restaurant and told me he would "reprimand" the waiter. I asked why the jerk of a waiter was still with customers. My kids are still sobbing at the meanness of the guy and nothing is happening to him. I promised the manager I would be writing this review. The waiter should be thanking his lucky stars that my son doesn't remember if he actually touched my son's hand grabbing the sugar packs, or this would be a police report and not a YELP review. read more
