One of the older joints in the Village, TBR (as no one calls it) is a small, quaint spot to get a little breakfast. The entrance includes two heavy doors with low clearance, and the waiting/check in areas are counterintuitive, but it's all part of the charm of this place. Unless you're in a wheelchair... Once you're seated at one of the dozen or so tables or a few seats at the L-shaped counter, the menu is pretty diverse. Basic egg breakfasts, omelets, oatmeal... it's all here. House specialty-grab is a cinnamon cornbread, which to my pallet was more of a cinnamon bread... I missed the "corn" part of the equation, but plenty of sugary goodness that I didn't mind. Sourdough toast was thick and hot. Coffee mug stayed full, thanks to attentive service. This restaurant seems to be at war with its customers. "Cash only", use the ATM in the front area (for a fee). An almost empty restaurant but it took the waitress an eternity to come to our table. Snarky attitude when telling customers "There are no menus"! while tapping the QR code on the table. When polite customers ask if it's possible to get a paper menu they are directed to the lobby where a faded menu with a zillion food choices is posted to the wall under plastic. Kinda pricey, but went in expecting that so I got a something not too pricey a grilled cheese. I kid you not was the most delicious thing I tasted in a while. It comes with tomato soup and pickles on the side. I didn't expect the pickles to add this much flavor with the tomato soup dip. Is it human nature to be drawn to the crowd? Wow over 1,000 reviews it must be great! Wait is over an hour long further proof it is great! And so the hype self perpetuates and voila! Teddy Bear looks and feels like how a small town coffee house should. And the food is good but not worth a long wait. The service is good (especially given the crowd) and the food comes pretty quick. I would definitely come back to try the chicken pot pie if the wait is reasonable. It's located in the nice shopping area so it's great for a little stroll after the meal. read more

Food here is the best food you'll ever have !!! Must try: Cinnamon corn bread ( was super unique and delicious ) Tuna melt ( even though I've never order tune melts, this one was absolutely amazing and flavorful ) Pastrami hash ( was super juicy and fresh ) Pies ( all handmade and authentic) Spent the weekend in big bear and came here everyday !!!! The food is to die for and a must try, but the services from the actual waiters/ waitress really sucked ( not the runners or the busers, cause they were actually really nice) !! **Heads up! Cash Only** Every time I spend a night out in Big Bear, at least one of my breakfast's has to be from here. I constantly cannot wait to go back each time! Service is always friendly and helpful, and on top of it. I love the décor and the location is perfect right in the center of the village. 4 out of 5 only solely due to the order being incorrect, BUT mistakes happen and it will not keep me from returning and updating on day. Mediocre at best. Place needs a face lift, looks dirty, and old. The food was straight forward, no thrills, you get what you ask for. A bit on the pricey side given the quality of the food, but that is standard for Big Bear. The service was the redeeming quality here. Another run of the mill big bear restaurant, nothing special, just sustenance at this point. Coffee from the pot, poorly seasoned food, raw peppers in your omelette, enjoy. We came here for my birthday breakfast since the grizzly manor was a long wait. Turns out the wait time was equivalent to theirs but we were so hungry so we stuck around. It did take 1hr and 45mins to get seated and in the meantime we grabbed a coffee from copper q. We were called and got seated very fast then ordered our food even quicker. The food is what truly saved the experience. Everything is so simply delicious! I love the feeling of getting quality food in a nicely lit room. Food okay! We ordered stakes. They was fair for this price, but the service unprofessional. I ordered water with lemon and after i drink almost everything, server don't even asked me for more. I put the empty glass on the edge of the table. Another problem is with electronic menu only on your phone. No traditional menu! I don't take my phone with me to this place. A little small diner place with very cozy vibes. There are times where the wait is pretty long so plan accordingly. They only take cash here, but they also have an ATM when you walk in. The chicken pot pie was the highlight and might I add a big serving size? I also got the taco salad cause balance. It was good! Loved the environment. read more

Specialties

The Teddy Bear specializes in home-style cooking. We make all of our own pies from scratch on the premises. Customers have been known to drive up the hill just for a piece of pie. My mom Gladys has been making our pies since 1971. She continues to oversee the pie making, but has some much deserved help. Our soups, chili and machaca are all original Teddy Bear recipes. We serve old fashioned shakes and malts. We've added a number of items over the years. One of our latest is our homemade chicken pot pies made from scratch and baked fresh daily. You might have noticed that some of our items have a name attached. Some of our regular customers have come up with their own personal meals. (We'll try to make just about anything you want if we have the right ingredients). Some of their orders were so good we decided to add them to the menu.

History

Established in 1944.

The Teddy Bear Restaurant has a long history in Big Bear. The original location was about 100 yards up the street. A couple of years later a new building was built on the present location. The front, kitchen and bathroom are all original construction. The building was built to house a second story. Obviously this was never done, but it did make for an extra strong foundation. The Teddy Bear has been successful for 63 years and counting. There have been considerable changes since the original building was built, both in ownership as well as structural. The original owners were Eddie and Wilma Wingard. In 1973 they sold the restaurant to my parents, Gerald and Gladys Schweitzer. My wife and I purchased the business in 1991. My parents added the front entry in the 70's and back dining room in 1983. We added the deck in 1994. Due to ever increasing regulations, it looks like this will be all the expansion we are going to undertake.

But this place just slam dunked on every other restaurant we've ever tried over the years - and not just for the drinks. I love a good old fashioned but until last night, every place I'd been to served their old fashioned in a glass full of ice like I was getting a soda at a fast food drive through. Not here. A proper big block ice cube made the "Maple old fashioned" (hands down) the best drink I've ever had. (I think they've got like 7 or 8 different varieties of the old fashioned and I will definitely be back to try them.) Our potato skins appetizer was on another level and that was before our entrees even arrived. My beef dip sandwich was perfect as was wifey's chicken Scaloppini. The timing of food arriving and the periodic check-ins from our waitress was flawless. We spoke briefly with the bartender, Doug (who may or may not have been one of the owners) to express how much we enjoyed our drinks and dinner. The hallmark of a well-run restaurant is that everyone who works there conducts themselves like it's their name on the sign out front. That's exactly what we got from everyone involved. Whoever is in charge of the kitchen staff deserves a Michelin star rating. The rest of the staff is equally impressive. I can't say enough about this place. Excellent drinks, excellent food and dynamite service. If you want a top-notch dining experience in Big Bear, this should be your first and only choice. From now on, it'll be mine.

My family and I enjoyed the lobster salad, lobster ravioli, French dip, and fettuccini Alfredo. All of these dishes were delicious! Furthermore, the service was friendly and accommodating. As for the ambiance, we sat outside and it was lovely. I highly recommend dining at the Peppercorn Grille.

When one of my girlfriend went to tip the musician and asked if he could stay another hour and she would pay him, he said yes but needed to clear it with Midean. My friend was treated rudely by her. As an owner of any establishment, service, service, service is top priority to your customers. This was not the case. Midean's demeanor was short and annoyed. Mind you, restaurant hour closes at 8:00 pm. However, the bar closes at 9:00 pm. Towards the end of our dinner, it felt hurried. Additionally, staff never complimented a dessert with a candle and a birthday song. But Alan offered to box our leftovers. Jerry, the husband owner was nice. But we know who wears the pants - the mean old lady. Menu prices in other upscale restaurants, server offers these services. Somehow, my mediocre, less than 6 pieces of clam linguini was not packed. Next day, I went looking through the frig., my leftover was never packed. Corkage fee per bottle here is $30 per bottle. Typically, elsewhere is $15-20. My girlfriend graciously paid the $600+ bill called the next day and spoke to Midean ( elderly lady); again, the owner was super defensive and pushed the responsibility on us for not packing the leftovers ourselves. Polite response from my friend who paid for the bill corrected the incident to Midean that this was offered by the server, shifting the responsibility back to the restaurant. When asked if my food could be replaced, a rude response was a stern no! I asked how will you address this experience to your server? She said, " Will tell server never to offer packing leftovers for customers." Furthermore, she told us to never come back. Wowzer - indeed, we will be taking our business elsewhere and warn others not to experience your rudeness.

The Teddy Bear Restaurant. What a disappointment. They lure you in with promises of a mere 15-minute wait, only to subject you to the torment of nearly 45 minutes of anticipation. One cannot help but question the integrity of an establishment that fails to deliver on such a fundamental commitment. As I stood in that interminable queue, my patience dwindled like a melting ice sculpture on a hot summer's day. The excruciating passing of time was only exacerbated by witnessing others, who arrived well after my party, being whisked away to their tables with apparent disregard for our existence. It was a most disheartening sight, rendering me an unwilling spectator to the restaurant's flagrant incompetence. Eventually, our turn arrived, and we were begrudgingly escorted to our seats. The teddy bear-themed decor attempted to mask the underlying mediocrity, but even plush bears cannot conceal the glaring truth. The ambiance, at best, was a mere distraction from the bitter taste of resentment that had already settled in my palate. To their credit, the menu offered a semblance of culinary creativity, as if to compensate for their inability to adhere to basic timekeeping principles. However, the food itself, while acceptable, did not manage to elicit any semblance of gastronomic excitement. It was a collection of forgettable flavors, lacking in both innovation and refinement. I must reluctantly admit that the staff, in the midst of their establishment's failures, did display a modicum of professionalism. Their attempts to salvage the situation were commendable, but alas, it was akin to placing a bandage on a festering wound. Their efforts, while appreciated, could not alleviate the profound disappointment that had already settled within me. In conclusion, the Teddy Bear Restaurant failed to deliver on their promise of a 15-minute wait, subjecting their patrons to a nearly tripled duration of anticipation. Such disregard for punctuality and customer satisfaction is a disservice to the culinary arts. The charm of the teddy bear theme and the fleeting moments of acceptable fare could not overshadow the prevailing sense of disappointment that permeated my experience. I don't usually leave yelp reviews. However I felt so inclined to do so with my experience at this restaurant in big Bear. In all fairness I am told it is a breakfast joint and I should have listened and just eaten breakfast here. I think that the dinner was one of the worst meals I have ever paid for at any establishment, here is why. Like the other reviewer who mentions ordering a salad and steak, my salad was wilted and rotten to the point where you could clearly see how rotten the greens were. I ordered a New York strip steak done medium well. I doubt that that was a New York strip steak, however it was it was one of the most gristly and poorly cooked short strip steaks I have ever eaten. The steak was not medium it was completely well to the point where the meat looked whitish gray. The service was also marginal to poor. I had ordered a coffee, and the coffee arrived after the meal did. The mashed potatoes were clearly mashed potatoes out of a box. The corn bread that they served my girlfriend was a dry, rocky, and flavorless hunk of yellow stuff with butter. I went from being agitated to just being hysterically amused that they were referring to this as service and or food. It got to point that each dish that came out topped the other in how comedically awful the food was. It got so heinously bad that it became side splitting funny. I began to call the food material. I will say you could eat the material and that it was hot material. Perhaps breakfast is better here? I had several friends emphatically recommend this place and now am wondering if they pranked me or are just unable to taste food or somehow like meat that has the texture of a prison or dormitory. A couple good points do include... The coffee was really really good coffee. The water was wet and had ice in it. Outside of that I am not kidding when I say this may be the worst meal I have ever paid for. I don't have the heart to leave a one star review so I am giving two stars because I was highly entertained with how bad the dinner here was. read more

We visited Teddy Bear Restaurant for lunch on during a weekend trip to Big Bear Lake with my wife and mom, choosing it for its dog-friendly patio and full entrees. The experience was good overall, but one issue kept it from being great, so we're giving it 4 stars. We drove two hours from OC and were seated right away on the dog-friendly patio, which was cozy and accessible, perfect for my mom's limited mobility. The menu offered soft, fresh options, which worked well for her dietary needs, and the food was tasty and satisfying. Our server, Issreal, was fantastic. He greeted us with a warm smile, checked on us frequently, and handled our requests with genuine kindness, making us feel well cared for throughout the meal. His attentive service elevated the experience and made it enjoyable for our group. However, one incident was disappointing. As our dog adjusted to the busy patio, he let out a few anxious barks. We were settling in when a server girl approached and bluntly warned us that if he barked again, we'd be asked to leave. This felt overly harsh for a dog-friendly restaurant , as the barking was brief and stopped once he calmed down. We had already moved tables to make room for a larger party with their own dog, which caused some commotion as the dogs reacted briefly. We complied without issue, but the server's stern tone made us feel unwelcome, especially since we picked this spot for its pet-friendly reputation. It put a damper on the meal. Issreal's outstanding service and the solid food brought the experience back up. The patio's access was great for my mom, and we appreciated the quick seating. We'd return for Issreal's hospitality but hope for a kinder approach to pets in the future. Teddy Bear is a reliable spot for a family lunch, but the pet policy needs a gentler touch. read more

My brother on the other side of the table orders a chicken pot pie after my mother and grandma, she once again says "no pot pie". My friend on the opposite side of my brother asks "what flavor pot pies do...." Mariana interrupts screaming "ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE NO POT PIES. NO POT PIES. NO POT PIES. FOR THE THIRD TIME!!! NNNOOOOOOO POOTTTTTTTT PIESSSSSSS" After a sudden silence and shock from my family my sister interrupts the silence asking what kind of tea, Mariana responds saying "I don't know it's a basket full of teas". Now we are mad... hungry and no chicken pot pie (their speciality) I kindly walk up to the front and request a manager..... Minutes after Mariana comes back and asks us, "Did your party request a manager? I am the manager" Half our table shouted, "what a horrible manager!!!" I'll end it here. Walking out of this restaurant. Sad mad angry disgusted. Mostly mad as my 1 star review won't make a difference on this 1k + 4 star rating. Food was okay, for the type of restaurant it is. however our server, Josue, had a terrible attitude and was very clearly annoyed for no reason at all. Myself and four friends of mine from another country were in there and he seemed annoyed with their genuine questions about menu items due to not being able to eat meat for religion, and cultural differences keeping them from knowing certain foods. not to mention, he told us he would give us a discount cause it took a few extra minutes for one of my friends to get their food, which we didn't even ask for, but we didn't get that discount any way for some reason. ON TOP OF us not getting soup that was ordered nor fruit that came with an order. Which we mentioned to him and he very rudely just took the soup off, didn't even ask if we still wanted it, and again, rudely asked if we wanted the fruit. Then when we mentioned we wanted the soup and about the discount he said "just give me the (amount of our order) I don't wanna add that soup back in" ... so he wasn't even gonna give us the soup nor a discount like he mentioned he was. To top it off, we asked for extra hot sauce which never came till another waitress got some for us the second we asked from the table next to us, and he NEVER even checked in on our table just got us the check; my friend was going to order something else and didn't get too. My friends all were very unhappy with our experience, and this is not okay behavior to have paid as much as we did. This place is well known and has been around for quite some time. Today happened to be quite chaotic for them and I know they can handle volume as the area of the village they are in is meant for tourists and locals alike. As you walk in, you write your name down and party as they do not have a host that is able to assist (that right there is a problem) so because of this, it becomes more disorganized and the workers that attempt to go through the list can't get it right. The person calling names earlier this morning was told by my fiancé that we were at the bottom of the list as someone started a new list (again not the workers but customers do this) but she informed him as he was skipping over people on the current list. So the other worker started to go off the new list and not referencing the old list with a few people still left on it who have already waited about 30-40 mins to be seated. So, after almost 45 mins, I went in and someone new started calling names off the list and I asked where the other list was. He asked "what list" and myself and another customer said there was another list and he apologized (which I understand as it isn't his fault) but what made it worse is when my fiancé proceeded to speak with him, he blew her off in front of quite a few customers and walked away. Very sad to see how this was handled and the disorganization. Definitely a new process needs to be implemented as I was not the only customer who dealt with this. The good: Walking in to this place you can tell it's going to be great diner style food and pies! I had the burger with blue cheese and sweet potato fries it wasn't anything to write home about. Good menu size and huge portions that are moderately priced. The bad: server took 25 minutes to even come to our table. I know she was busy but we didn't even get a hello or offer for water. I finally flagged down a Busser to bring us some drinks. The server never ended up asking us about drinks. When she took our tables order most of our order had errors, wrong salad dressing no bacon on my burger which came with it. After our food was delivered the server dropped off our check and left without even asking how our food was or seeing if we wanted anything else. Also this place is cash only. The ATM they provide gave me $20 when I asked for $40 and it charged me $40. I know that's not their fault but the manager said that machine does that all the time and I would just have to work it out with my bank. They should let you know before hand or....I don't know, get a new machine. Conclusion: pretty good diner food but HORRIBLE service not worth going again. read more

It was probably a bad idea to come here when you are starving. After a long day of snowboarding, our group was starving. The good thing about the restaurant is that the server was very nice and accommodating. The bad thing, when you are hungry, everything smells good; however, when the food comes out, it's a whole different ball game. Everything our table ordered was bland. The chicken pot pie and chicken fried steak came highly recommended. The chicken pot pie is huge and the flaky crust was the best thing about the whole dish. The chicken fried steak was a little dry and the country gravy did not add to the dish at all. The Mexican soup tasted like minestrone. The cornbread was moist. Unfortunately, we came kind of late and so we only got 2 slices of bread b/c they ran out. Overall, food was bland. If I do go again, maybe it would have to be for breakfast or pies. read more

The food was excellent, I took the family there for dinner and the portions were large. The pot pie was huge; my son had enough for a large snack the next day. My daughter had a chicken plate, I don't remember what it was but she loved it. She is a picky eater. I ordered the Buffalo wings as an appetizer, it came with celery ranch dressing. Not bad at all, actually we ordered a second. I also had steak medium rare, came out perfect, potatoes, soup of the day was tasty. I was excited to try this restaurant after seeing great reviews and TikTok videos raving about it. When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it was cash-only, though they did have an ATM in the lobby. We waited at the hostess stand for about 15 minutes, but no one acknowledged us. Hoping to speed up the process, we asked one of the staff members if we could sit at the table top. Instead of a simple "We'll be with you shortly," which would have been good customer service, he just told us, "No, go back and stand over there. Someone is coming." Stopped by here on our way out of town after spending a weekend up at the mountain. The breakfast was so so, decent portions, but just didn't feel the service was all that great. We waited about 30 minutes for our food after ordering when there were about 10 tables taken up in the restaurant. Now I think good breakfast joints are hard to find, and we stopped in after the Teddy Bear was recommended to us the day prior, so I imagine we will give it another shot the next time we are up the mountain, however, our first experience was not up to par with what we had heard about the establishment. Avoid! Food is tolerable at best. Salsa in Spanish omelette tasted canned and artificial. Found 2 pieces of hair in biscuits and gravy. Service was terrible. We couldn't get any server's attention when we were trying to exchange it or to pay after the meal. Also the server girl with the blond ponytail was rude to me when I asked about options for eggs and yelled (!) at guests sitting at the table next to us and was so rude to them that they had to ask for another server. The food was delicious and that is reflected in the line outside. The service was prompt and efficient. If you go on a ski season weekend or holiday, the lines will be long everywhere because the volume of mountain visitors in general. Put your name down and walk around the quaint village during your wait. As an added plus, on my last visit, I left my purse hanging on the chair. 11 hours later, I called right at closing when I figured out where I left it. They answered and had my purse! The RUDEST, nasties manager/owner on EARTH. I walked in with my small service dog, a pom. This man assaulted me and told me to leave his restaurant by saying "merry Christmas, go fck yourself." Then, while waiting for the check, I made the mistake of reading the one-star reviews. Now I *had* to leave one. Yes, the food isn't served at lightning speed. Ours wasn't either. And you know what? It was worth every minute. This is a small, family-run restaurant--not a corporate chain with an army of cooks hidden behind swinging kitchen doors. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, tasted homemade, and arrived hot and fresh. The staff was warm, welcoming, and working incredibly hard. As a bonus, they're genuinely dog-friendly. We were able to enjoy breakfast with our pup on the patio, and they even have a dog menu. That's not just "dogs allowed"--that's a business that goes the extra mile. Somewhere along the way we've confused "not instant" with "bad service." We expect fresh, made-to-order food from small businesses to appear with fast-food timing, then punish them when it doesn't. Patience has become a lost art. If you're in a hurry, there are plenty of drive-thrus. If you want an outstanding breakfast, friendly people, a place that welcomes your dog as warmly as it welcomes you, and food that's worth waiting for, Broadway Cafe is absolutely deserving of its reputation. Perhaps unorganized in the kitchen or slow in production. This isn't merely just waiting but the fact that your own staff told us different wait times. We did wait. We waited according to your instructions and schedule. We were told many different wait times every time we followed up and asked. The time kept getting longer and longer when there were no other parties waiting but us. First we were told 30mins, then literally minutes later it changed. Then an additional 20mins added. Then, 30. Then we waited, and it changed again. They kept telling us it would be longer and longer. Why would the time go backwards? A small gilled cheese sandwich for an hour? One order. You can ask any business owner or any place outside of your small town that it is a ridiculous wait time for a customer to wait for that long for one small sandwich. Instead of arguing back with your customers, a decent thing to do would have been to apologize and just have accommodated the sandwich just for having us almost an hour of waiting without even getting in. A true business owner wouldn't have responded in how you did. Not only horrible service, but bad ownership practices so I see where it reflects poorly.

Great food, great portions, and exactly what I needed after being on the mountain. Would absolutely recommend to anyone visiting Big Bear. Ambiance was nice too, you can see the lake from the parking lot.
