I'm normally not a fan of conveyor belt sushi just due to the stress for the chefs to make sushi on demand and the chance the roll won't come out as consistent. I've gone here multiple times and find my cravings satisfied. I made the mistake blindly just grabbing plate after plate piling it up. When we finally ordered, the waitress with short black hair and glasses interrupted us multiple times. Then, when we got our check, the same waitress rang us up and gave herself a 25% tip! We didn't pick this option; she had charged us and gave us the screen to sign without showing us the screen with a tip option. We didn't realize until we got the receipt, which showed she had given herself a $23 tip. We love Tengu. It's our local neighborhood sushi place and we have been coming for years. The owner, Kozo Sato, works so hard and is always so friendly to his patrons. Tonight was my first dine-in visit since the pandemic, and it was the first time I did not see him making sushi behind the belt. I'm sure they have had to hire new staff since slowly reopening dine-in service. When I walked in tonight with my two children there were only two customers at the counter paying. While we waited to be seated another customer walked straight past us into the restaurant. The hostess ended up helping her first with her pick up order rather than seating us. We were the only people in the restaurant. I want to see this restaurant survive. I'm glad they've made it this far. But their staff need to pay attention to their customer service and emulate Chef Sato. I was ready to walk out after the hostess basically ignored us to assist a pushy patron who came in after us. Luckily we had a very attentive server. (Again, we were the only customers when we were seated.) When we left the hostess asked how everything was. I told her everything was great except for her assisting the patron who came in after us. She simply said, "Oh." I hope it was only her inexperience that contributed to her lack of attention. Outside looking in it's another carousel sushi. Design of carousel layout isolates diners from communication with the chefs which I think is an important part of the sushi experience. Small selection on carousel leaves a need to order from laminated menu. Menu lacks info and does not reflect signage on carousel. I've been to similar restaurants that have a digital system tied into the chefs and it is very efficient. The food was ok, not great. The price point is very high for mediocre food... meaning it's too expensive to be mediocre. I've been to other carousel style sushi places and the communication between diner and chef is very important. This restaurant is missing that link. I actually did walk over to the chefs and asked if they offered salmon skin soup- my favorite- and the reply was "no" . No conversation, no reply questions like what other items can we get for you. Very unfriendly attitude. These sushi chefs are not line workers on a car assembly plant but that's the way I felt they acted. No one asked if we needed water or wanted a beverage. I've found my new favorite Conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Washington! Tengu Sushi does an excellent job at keeping their belt stocked with good quality sushi, and great service as well. It's a bit more lowkey compared to a more popular place like Kura in Bellevue, so you'll likely have much shorter wait times here as well. I'm a huge fan of nigiri and they get it right here. They serve nice cuts of fish and everything tasted surprisingly fresh. I like how they don't cut their nigiri super thin like other places. Prices here are a bit on the pricier side. We spent $100 for two people here, granted I am a big eater. It's the most I've spent at any conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Washington, but this just shows how tasty and addicting their sushi is. I tried the chicken karrage lunch box which is available weekdays only along w order of the chirashi bowl and side order of seared salmon. I thought the lunch box was fantastic and larger than expected and tastes great ( $12.95). He rarely came to check on us despite the restaurant being fairly empty. It's also very cold in there I could not get comfortable. I was super excited when they were going to reopen from renovations, but I was very disappointed when they did and I found out that they completely changed their menu. I used to love this place, and it has been my favorite sushi haunt for the past several years, but now have to either special order old staples they no longer offer, or find a new sushi haunt. I don't care for spicy or cream cheese and now everything pretty much has one or the other. Like the salmon avocado roll they used to have; it had salmon (raw), avocado, cucumber, rice, and seaweed. Simple. If I got it to share with someone who liked spicy, they could add that on with wasabi or a side of sauce. Now if I want to get that same roll (without special ordering, which is a pain), I would have to order a salmon roll (salmon, rice, seaweed), an avocado roll (avocado, rice, seaweed), and a side of cucumber (which I'm fine with omitting, because it's my least favorite thing and not worth ordering separately). And ordering 2 rolls off menu just to try and reconstruct a simple salmon avocado roll seems like more work than it's worth, especially when other places have this same simple roll on menu. I got a couple handrolls special ordered with salmon, avocado, rice, masago, and seaweed. One of them smelled funny (and didn't eat it), but the other one was pretty good and I wished while eating it that I could maybe start ordering that off the menu, but they had to change a spicy salmon handroll that was on the menu and then talk directly to the chef to make sure it wasn't spicy. All that trouble, I am nervous that it won't go that good each time I'd end up frequenting here. I don't like doing special orders for fear that it just won't be understood. I understand wanting to update a menu or to change it slightly to add new fare, but even when I talked to one of the staffers there, she said that they have been having a lot a lot of regulars come in and she tries to recreate old staples that are no longer on the menu, which seems pretty stupid. Seems like a HUGE oversight to change SO MUCH and not keep some more simple rolls that don't have something spicy or cream cheese included. We can add spicy on with wasabi! Or make a not spicy version of things for the people that like to control such things. I really hope they read this and reconsider adding on simple favorites from their old menu. I'd hate to have to search out a new haunt, but I fear I will have to. Too bad since I just moved closer to this place and was so excited to stop by after work more often. This is a great place for conveyor sushi. It is a bit pricey compared to other sushi places, especially considering you don't really have a server. It is good food and even a fast option since the moment you sit down you can start eating and I would encourage others to go there if they wanted sushi. The minute I took a bite of that shrimp tempura rolls I immediately recalled why I haven't been back at tengu for 4 years, despite living 5 minutes away from it. Unliked other places, the rice in the shrimp tempura rolls tasted a lot like sticky rice rather than sushi rice :/ There were also carrots in there... Then, wanting to give it the benefit of the doubt, I ordered a calamari, even though I was already highly skeptical looking at the picture from the menu. I have probably tried calamari at 30 different places. It's usually my go-to dish if it's on the menu. And my skepticism was proven to be correct. Absolutely the most oily and greasy calamari I have ever tried. It's not well-flavored, not crispy enough--just purely super deep fried. I had to go rinse out my mouth in the bathroom after eating half of the plate. The portion is just not worth it for 5.95, please. It's infuriating. The only good dish was the salmon, but that's kind of the most basic thing. Lastly, being accustomed to low-sodium soy sauce, tengu definitely provides the saltiest soy sauce i have ever tried in my life. Ugh, my taste palate. Pricing-wise, it's unreasonably expensive for conveyor-belt sushi. The colors for the green dishes are super confusing and extremely hard to distinguish. Not again, last time here. We've been here a lot - although the sushi is average/below average, it's really convenient after hockey practice and they recognized us as regulars. We've support med them on slow Tuesdays, Friday and everything in between. They've incorrectly over-counted our plates a couple of times, but it was fine. However, I'll never go back there again. I showed up with two kids and the place was surprisingly busy, so we signed in and waited patiently - probably 20 minutes or so? While we waited, I watched them seat multiple tables of 2, including those that were just walking in the door. It was annoying but I figured they had a plan. At one point, though, a family of 3 gets up from the bar, so I get the kids ready because we're surely next. However, instead of seating us, they sat another table of 2 into those 3 seats while we just sat there. My young kids even asked what happened. So, I mentioned it to waitress, assuming that they'd just made a mistake and would at least apologize, but she just stared at me blankly and said nothing and walked off. I then figured that the hostess, who knows us, would at least apologize, but when I explained it to her, she said "OK" and then walked off. I wasn't expecting them to move people out of their seats, but just an acknowledgment - but I got absolutely nothing. We're regulars. This sushi restaurant has a belt that carries the various selections around the entire counter. Like to decor. Prices are on par with other sushi belt restaurants in the area. Calibrate your expectations appropriately and you won't be disappointed. I returned to Tengu for the first time since The Before Times. There's clearly been a change in ownership, flavor, and attention to detail. There are more rolls and less nigiri on the belt. Many of the rolls lean heavily on strongly flavored sauces (spicy mayo, thick kabayaki/unagi sauce), and deep fried ingredients or tenkasu (bits of fried batter - a byproduct of tempura). There's less volume per plate (4 rolls instead of 6, for instance), and the rolls themselves lack finesse (they're tightly packed, rendering them more chewy than necessary). They no longer seem to use the custom blend of rices that used to give their sushi a pleasant mouth-feel, instead, opting for a uniform, too-soft preparation, where the nigiri and rolls lack the ephemeral texture in each bite. The table-side aggressively green wasabi lacks any essence of traditional powder wasabi, instead being there mostly for color and a mild tang. The service was fine. I was checked-in on once during the meal, and tallying was quick when done. The ambiance has become more sparse, giving it a more staged feel than reflecting any sort of personality. There's no reason not to dine at Tengu: just be aware that you'll be enjoying a meal that's "sushi" primarily in appearance. read more
