It had been years (literally) since my last visit to Terry Black's, and myself, my wife, and some of my best Yelp Elite comrades went there on Friday evening before the World Cup finals to "party like the World Cup fans do" when they discover Texas BBQ. We worked our way through the line, a little streamlined from my last visit, and selected vegetables. My wife and I like to share these days, especially with the crazy portion sizes, so we agreed on creamed corn, mac and cheese, and BBQ beans. I grabbed a cornbread muffin (spoiler alert: this has so much sugar, it's basically dessert) and some pickles and red onion strands finished out the non-meat course. Over to the meat counter, we summoned a half pound of fatty brisket and a quarter pound of sliced turkey. We then headed to our seat to join the others. Digging in to the goods, the brisket was moist and tender, the fat between the point and flat was easy to separate and the smoke flavor was intense. Turkey was also moist, which is far from guaranteed at these places, it's easy to overdo. We mostly did straight up meat, but the sauces were very nice, too. The creamed corn was tasty if a little runny, the mac and cheese was very thick and delightfully cheesy, and the beans were tender but not mushy, and had a bunch of meat packed in for additional flavor. All in all, a great time was had, and we left with full bellies and happy hearts. Definitely a winner!

Terry Black's Barbecue is a fantastic Texas Style BBQ joint that has made its way to Dallas's Deep Ellum neighborhood, imported directly from Austin. After watching World Cup fans from other countries take over Terry Black's, I knew I had to make a visit. Bookmark this place, it's one of the best in North Texas. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Terry Black's has its own parking a lot - that alone deserves a star. But what makes Terry Black's so special are the smokers on display as you walk up. As you enter, the intoxicating smell of smoked meat grabs your attention as you line up to order. There's tons of indoor, outdoor, and rooftop seating. 1 Star. Service - Terry Black's proves you don't need to stand in line for hours to get great BBQ. The line starts with you choosing your sides and desserts, and once you've made your decision, you'll then order from one or 5 (or 6?) expert meat cutters. Each order is cut to order, weighed, and you pay for your meal. 1 Star. Food - Texas is known for its brisket, and Terry Black's does it very well. I'm a fan of the fatty cut, and the 14-hour smoked meat is so tender it melts in your mouth. The black bark adds a nice salt and pepper taste that enhances the flavor. There's nothing like a proper smoked brisket. The pork ribs will fall off the bone and also have amazing smoke flavor. I didn't order the Beef Rib, but if you have a big appetite (or a group of friends to share it with), go for it. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. While the World Cup is over and the tourists have left, their visit to North Texas reminded me that I don't have to drive to Central Texas for amazing BBQ. Thank you, Terry Black's BBQ for opening in Dallas and sharing your amazing BBQ with us. 1 Star.

Terry Black's BBQ had been on our list after a friend recommended it based on all the hype she'd seen online. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to our expectations. We ordered three meats--the sausage, brisket, and pork ribs--along with two sides: creamed corn and green beans. Out of everything we tried, the sausage was easily the standout. It had great flavor and was the only meat I'd order again. The brisket was disappointing; while a few pieces had good smoky flavor, the majority of it was dry. The pork ribs were decent but nothing memorable. The sides were the biggest letdown. Both the creamed corn and green beans lacked seasoning and fell flat. Neither of us finished them, which is rare when it comes to BBQ sides. The food is priced by the pound, so costs can escalate quickly. For the two of us, our meal came to around $60. We considered adding the famous beef rib, but a single rib would have pushed our total to approximately $130. Given how underwhelmed we were with the rest of the meal, I'm glad we decided against it because I don't think it would have justified the additional cost. Where Terry Black's shines is the atmosphere. The large communal tables create a welcoming environment that encourages conversation without feeling crowded. The ordering process is cafeteria-style, so interactions with the staff are brief, but everyone we encountered was friendly and efficient. The location in Deep Ellum is another highlight. It's a great area to explore before or after your meal, with plenty of local shops, bars, and street art all within walking distance. Overall, I'd rate the food a **5/10**. While the atmosphere, staff, and location made for a pleasant visit, the BBQ itself didn't live up to the reputation or the price point. I left wishing the food had been as impressive as everything else surrounding the experience.

The stand out MUST HAVE at Terry Blacks is the beef ribs. They're the most amazing BBQ I've ever had. The meat is insanely tender. The amount of collagen and the great seasoning was perfection. I'd personally skip out on pork ribs and brisket. And their sides are also not giving. But just the beef ribs alone put Terrys on top of the list for me. If I'm in Dallas, I would absolutely have to have them again. It's a self service type situation. You stand in line and order things from the Sides counter, the Drinks bar and the Meat counter. Then you find a table and get your cutlery. Yes there's a line but it moves quick. Very casual!

Terry Black's was one of the most hyped barbecue spots in town while the World Cup was here, so I had to finally give it a try. We decided to have a UYE to give it a try. It was good but honestly, it didn't quite live up to all the hype for me. This is the only location I've been to, so I can't compare it to the original location, which I've heard some people say is better. Still, I enjoyed the experience, but my favorite BBQ spot remains my favorite.

Went with the small family pack so I could try a little bit of everything. For the meats, I got the brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. The brisket was the standout for me. Tender, smoky, and packed with flavor without needing any sauce. The pork ribs were juicy and pulled apart easily, and the sausage had a great snap with plenty of seasoning. The sides were just as impressive. The mac and cheese was creamy and rich, the green beans had great flavor, and the potato salad was classic Texas barbecue done right. The Mexican rice was a nice change from the usual barbecue sides, and the cream corn was sweet, buttery, and hard to stop eating. The cornbread tied everything together perfectly. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere and you can smell the smoke as soon as you walk in. Even with the crowds, the line moved efficiently and the staff kept things organized. This was my first time at Terry Black's and it absolutely lived up to the reputation. If you're in Dallas and want Texas barbecue, this place is worth the trip.

I thought Texas bbq was overrated until I tried Terry Black's. No lie, best bbq I've ever had in my life! I went on a weekend late afternoon and surprisingly there was no line at this location o: the service was very fast and the cashiers were super friendly and talkative! The ambiance was laid back with plenty of seating and self service. We got the brisket, jalapeño sausage, and pork ribs. Everything was SO tender and literally melted in my mouth. I loved the sauces they provided as well/ especially the sweet and spicy sauce. Every single side dish slapped as well. My fave was the corn salad & bread! The only side that didn't wow me was the Mac & cheese. I would 100% be back and recommend to anyone who's visiting!

Might go down as one of my greatest regrets in life...why didn't I say "moist" or "fatty" brisket??? I said "brisket" because it's what they are famous for and I assumed that it would be good regardless of what I said. I was wrong. The brisket was tough, dry, not edible. Two groups with my family got brisket after us, maybe by an hour, and asked for fatty, and they loved it. It looked amazing. I was beyond jealous. So that's why I give 4 stars instead of 5. The beef rib is special. So good. Flavorful, juicy, big. The pork ribs also special. Amazing flavor. Very tender. The turkey was good. Moist and tender. But it's turkey. Not special. The sides were all good as well. The highlights were they Mac n cheese, Mexican rice, and corn. All delicious. I kept eating. Very clean on the inside. Everyone working there very nice.

Good experience. Fast line. Quick and easy to order. Staff were friendly. Ordered 5 pieces pork ribs, 1 original sausage, mac and cheese, cole slaw, potato salad with drinks. They threw in brisket burnt end pieces and extra ribs. Had plenty of seats and staff kept it clean which we appreciated. We were so full and satisfied!! I wish the spicy sauce were more spicy but we will definitely be back again!

Food: This was my first time having BBQ in Texas, and needless to say I was really looking forward to trying out one of the most highly-rated spots in Dallas. My partner and I shared 1/2 a pound each of Beef Brisket and Pork Ribs, along with sides of Mac and Cheese, Mexican Rice, Green Beans, and Cream Corn. The sides were pretty decent--the dense, creamy Mac and Cheese stole the spotlight for me. Then, as far as the meats, they had a nice smoky flavor, but they fell a bit short--not sure if it's because they've been sitting out for a bit, but it was a tad dry. In total, spent ~$70 for our order. Service: Ordering is relatively streamlined--you first order your sides, cafeteria-style, then order your meats. The person who checked us out was helpful and gave us the low-down on how to order the meat. Ambiance: Casual, rustic. Parking: Adjacent parking, but limited. However, street parking is available.

My first Texas BBQ and it did not disappoint! We got there at 12:30pm on a Saturday and was pleasantly surprised that the wait was very short (maybe only 10 min). The line is super fast and efficient. We got the small family meal, which comes with 3 lbs of meat (you can mix multiple meats as you like) and 5 sides. And got a few other items on the side. We got brisket, sausage (both kinds), pork ribs, burnt ends, and 1 beef rib. Everything was delicious. The brisket was our favorite. For side, we got Mac and cheese, green beans, potato salad, beans, and coleslaw. Potato salad was our favorite! They've got self serve toast and bbq sauces are in the coolers. Overall an amazing experience. I would love to come back the next time I'm in the state.

We came for the food but stayed because of the excellent staff!! From Cici at the meat station to Luz at the bar. I mean wow!!! Luz went above and beyond to make these out of towners feel so welcome to wonderful Dallas!! She is a gem!!! We ordered the peach frozen and tried a ranch water. Two drunk we typically never would have ordered. The food needs no explanation Get the beef ribs .... So tender they fall off the bone. We also got turkey, Mac and cheese, pinto beans and green beans Food coma So delicious So worth it

Terry Black's Barbecue Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Terry Black's Barbecue

Is it possible to order a tasting platter to sample all the different meats at once?

All of the meats are by the pound. If you want to try everything, just let them know how much you want of each item. They don't have a sampler. But if you let them know upfront that you want just a little bit of everything, they can accommodate that…

Do put bbq sauce or is bbq sauce available to put on your ribs?

The ribs are served unsauced. There is usually sauce at the tables or you can request sauce on the side for carry-out.

How early should you line up on a Saturday?

It varies. I’ve been there on a Saturday at lunch time and it wasn’t bad. Another time it was packed. But the line moves quite fast even if it’s an extra busy day. Hardest part is seating. The outdoor area helps but if it’s not a nice day to sit…

    Do they take reservations?

No they do not. But it's worth the wait.

Do the beef ribs sell out early like a lot of places, or will they be available later in the day?

Yes they definitely sell out. I usually am there at 11am and they have them, but the supply is definitely finite.

If I'm coming by for lunch on a Monday, how early should I get there for the line?

    any time. they move fast!

I have an allergy to limes and tomatoes. Does the bbq come separately and is the meat marinaded in lime juice or oranges?

I keep seeing them advertise Black Margaritas on Instagram. Do they serve them in Austin also, or just Dallas? Do they taste like a regular margarita?

Served in both locations and it has a hint of mescal but it is not too strong. Try one.

Do they not serve smoked chicken here?

No, they do not. Per their menu, they serve brisket (their specialty), beef ribs, turkey, pork ribs, chopped beef, and sausage. But, unless you just gotta have chicken, they are well worth going to. Have been there twice now and plan on going back…

By the time the store opened, the line had grown to being over twenty parties long, so plan accordingly if you don't want to be waiting for a while. Between the four in our party, we shared a three meat BBQ plate with bacon burnt ends, brisket, and their house made sausage. For our two sides, we chose their hatch chile mac n cheese and their Mexican street corn. Following the recommendations of many Yelpers, we also ordered two of the brisket tostadas and two of the birria tacos. When we received our plate of meat, I was a bit surprised at how little of each meat there was on the plate, but in hindsight, this ended up being the perfect amount of food, where everyone was able to get a sample of everything. Of the items we ordered, my favorite was definitely the burnt ends. These were melt in your mouth tender, and was insanely rich and decadent. Each of the three pieces in our order had a beautiful bark on the outside that resulted in a satisfying crunch with every bite. The casing to the sausage was snappy and the sausage itself was very juicy. The brisket was fall apart tender. The brisket was a bit light on seasoning, so I ended up using the Aztec Gold BBQ sauce they had sitting at the table with it. The sides that we chose were both delicious. The pasta in the mac n cheese was cooked perfectly and the noodles was generously sauced. The elote was sweet and smokey, and the Cotija cheese added creaminess to the side. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at Hurtado Barbecue and wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit if you're in Texas and are looking for great tasting BBQ.

The brisket and pork ribs were decent, but honestly pretty dry and lacking in flavor when compared to some other BBQ places in DFW. For the price, it's pretty similar to other BBQ in the area. The Texas Twinkie is a jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese and brisket and wrapped in bacon. It was my favorite item as the cream cheese and bacon balanced out the spiciness of the jalapeño. The mac n cheese was also delicious with the perfect amount of spice. The service was great too as they made a mistake on my order and quickly corrected it. I like that this place is open daily and for dinner too. Overall, I would recommend this place if you're in the area and looking for some BBQ, but if you're a huge fan of BBQ then I recommend going to the other top BBQ places.

My memories of the farmers market area of Dallas Texas are some of my earliest. Going back decades to when it was an actual farmers market. You know, where farmers load trucks of fresh produce and travel 10s or hundreds of miles in order to sell the fruits of their labor and make a living. Well, starting about 40 years ago, that small farmer ethos started fading and the powers that be implemented a Farmers Market Redevelopment Plan. Bingo, that's where we are today. A popular multiuse, living, working, resturant, shopping district that's self sustaining on the edge of downtown. Enter Hurtado and another startegiclly placed outpost for their award winning Texas BBQ with a twist. Located in a new architecturally pleasing building, the only potential barrier between you and the brisket is parking. On my Tuesday lunch this wasn't a problem but at busier times, keep this in mind. When you enter, the place is bright and clean with staff waiting to make your visit count. The hostess even brought us menues as we looked up at the wall menu choices, nice touch. Before long we decided and slid up the counter to order. Ordering, paying, taking our number and beverage glasses, was easy peasy. In case your inclined, there is a full bar which may entice my return visit . Full array of soft drinks and ice tea is also handy. We took a comfortable booth and only wait ed a few minutes ( long enough for our delicious hand cut fries to cook) before our "El Jeffe" was delivered to our table. After the drooling stopped we dove in sharing, brisket, ribs, hatch Chili Mac n cheese, brisket beans, bread, pulled pork, burnt ends, hand cut fries and Texas Twinkies. The food here is excellent. Made with love as Texas Barbecue has to be. Service with a smile is the deal clincher. I will return for a follow up review and reveal what kept me from serving up the 5 th star! For now I recommend you... Go!

So my girlfriend said "oh, we are meeting her son and his wife at this barbecue place off of…read moreGreenville," and as I do as a Yelper, I started pulling up pictures on Yelp and honestly I wasn't impressed with some of the pictures, but let me tell you once we got our food and sat down and started eating, I was like DANG!! this is actually really good!! The brisket was nice and fatty and juicy, well seasoned. The sausage glistened and was very good. The sides were also really good from the mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. The service was welcoming and fast. It was late in the evening on a Friday night and it was pretty empty that night, but that was ok. We will come back for sure. They food is on point.

The only good thing was the brisket. Brussels had no flavor, and they were hard. The baked beans…read morevery mediocre I'd rather have canned. Bbq sauce was good I'll say. But I'm highly disappointed. Service was shit. They said "we are out of a lot of stuff" "idk if we even still make the chicken" it was just pathetic. Giving very careless service. Even when I came and went from the front door- bartender seemed like he hated his life. This was my first visit and I was thinking it was a restaurant- no, definitely more cafeteria vibes. And I was hoping the food was gonna be better bc I saw good reviews, but nope. I promise you I will never go back there. I'm disgusted with everything. Don't know why there were any good reviews in the first place I had better food and service at a fast food place. I'm mad I wasted my gas money and $25. Trash. Maybe terminate everybody, and start over bc this place isn't going anywhere but down. I never leave reviews this bad but I'm legit disgusted by the entire experience thanks to the staff giving off so much "I don't care" energy.
