I know this is true because I had a really good kindergarten teacher who taught us life's lessons and really cared and wanted us all to succeed and be happy in life. "You have to take the good with the bad". That's another good one. I was in a great mood even though some bad things had already happened to me. I fell in a pothole and hit my nose on the concrete. Be careful when talking on your cellphone and walking. That's some more good advice. Bad things happen in threes. So the way I saw it, two bad things had already happened to me (Falling is one. Hitting my nose the other. They are separate.) One more bad thing and I would be safe. This is due to the holy trinity and is a fact. Some people don't believe in this or are agnostic. I do not like them. I agreed to go to a bar in the west loop. We decided to take the bus. Normally we take cabs but this bar seemed far away and a bus is more economical. On the way, we passed a hipster bar I know about. I haven't been there but I heard about it. Some nights they offer fried chicken and show porn on the TVs. This is because hipsters like to challenge norms. I mentioned this. She seemed impressed by my knowledge of the neighborhood. Things were going well. The Aberdeen tap offers guiness beer. This is my favorite and I had 4 pints. She had 11 brooklyn champagne's which are drinks with champagne and ginger liquor. I tasted some. It was good. The Aberdeen tap also has alligator hot dogs and duck hot dogs. I did not order these. Aberdeen is a city in Scotland with no ducks or alligators. When people make dishes they aren't familiar with sometimes they do not turn out correctly. For example, once I had a hot dog in mexcio city that had mayonnaise on it. I did not like this. I do not think that a dish of haggis in mexico city would be good either because people from mexico city aren't used to making haggis . Although, I cannot be certain of this. read more

Ride by here every. single. day. on my bike. I finally was like, I'm going in!!! I'm so happy I did. Monday night was $4 Bells brews and Monday nights are $8 bangers and grinders...Holla!!!! Our bartender, Aiden, was so super cool. I had the lamb banger. It had parmesan crisps and truffle giardiniera on it. Husbo had the bison meatball grinder. All in all - food perfection. Ceasar salad was delish. Then we ordered creme brulee. Kitchen wouldn't serve it due to quality control (it was too runny) so they gave us brownie ala mode instead - Who doesn't love brownies, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup?? If you don't, you're dumb. Sorry. The daily specials here won't break your bank and I really loved the vibe. I work a few blocks away, so the Aberdeen is a very convenient lunch spot. That said, I'd come here even if it were considerably farther away. I "grew up" on the South side in neighborhood bars, and this place is by far the nicest such bar I've been in. I usually come most Wednesdays for the $5 hamburgers, and the staff is always very pleasant and friendly. An alternative rock Pandora station is typically playing, and the TVs are usually playing muted ESPN and (sometimes additionally) a random movie or food show. On the mirror behind the bar, they've listed hard alcohol choices. This used to display the beer list, which is pretty extensive (not sure why this changed). There is a patio that wraps around the corner and is pet friendly. The food is definitely a step above the usual bar fare. I especially recommend the lamb banger. The sweet potato tots are apparently good as well, but I haven't tried them personally. You may notice that the Aberdeen has been listed as a top neighborhood Chicago bar multiple times, and this is where I think it stands out. A smallish pub not located on a main thoroughfare, the Aberdeen is just a chill spot to hang out and enjoy some good food and beer. You will likely see some regulars in the bar regardless the time of day. This indicated to me that the Aberdeen is legit, as there are a number of other bars within walking distance. read more

Great place for food and drinks! I ordered the Cubano grinder - pulled pork, ham, dijonaise, swiss cheese and pickles served with sweet potato tots. The bread of the open-faced sandwich was soft and the pulled pork was tender. I especially enjoyed the sweet potato tots! They were perfectly crispy and hot and the dipping sauce was delicious. I also ordered a cider and it was very refreshing. It was a nice day so the group I was with decided to sit outside in the patio area. Our server was very friendly and frequently checked up on us. This is one of my favorite bars. Getting parking nearby is hell, but if you live close, this is really quite a gem. The beer selection is great, and the food is better than the average pub grub. Outdoor seating is wonderful during the summer, and they always have something interesting playing. .The bar has two main rooms, but we usually stay near the bar. During nights, it can be a bit hard to find a seat, but moving around talking to new people is part of the fun. The crowd averages around the early thirties. Mixed feelings- Awesome to Awful So please allow me to begin by saying this establishment had been one of my absolute favorite places to both eat and drink on my frequent visits to Chicago for a few years now. I have friends, family and clients in the neighborhood. Last week however I had a game-changing bad experience that I just need to share here as a long time yelper. Last Wednesday April 6th, I was in town for the week, and was lucky enough to attend the Iggy Pop/Josh Homme show at Chicago theater--after the show, we evaluated all of the great options available -We were torn between the 9 options available in the neighborhood : Spoke, Aberdeen, Grandview, Two, Matchbox, Silver Palm, Oggi, Mart Anthony's and G&O--We know we would have had a great time, had great food and heard great music at all of them and decided to go to the Aberdeen for a post show hang out and all seemed well as usual. There were 2 other big shows in town that same night--David Gilmour and Iron Maiden and ran into some fellow post show music lovers here! The mood was great. There were three of us, 4 folks from the Iron Maiden show and 2 more from the Gilmour show--9 total. So we sat down, ordered drinks, some food and proceeded to play some tunes on the juke box-paid for $10 worth of songs. Queued up our 10 songs (or $10 worth) and during the first song one of the 4-group nicely came up to us and asked ' hey can we jump on your juke box queue-we're dying to hear some IRON Maiden--and we'll but you a shot as good faith and spirit'. Of course we said yes and they queued up their song. As our song ended, we suddenly heard a mainstream pop song that none of us had paid for and wondered, 'what's going on'? Then after that song, another one and another one. We called it to our server's attention (she was AWSOME by the way) and she explained, oh well that's a new APP that the Juke Box owners "Touch Tunes" added recently that allows you to "override what's next and play your song for an extra $2. I though "WHAT"? So for $2 you can ditch the line and get up front? Well that's exactly what that is and what it turned into, as you might imagine it became a war between the patrons about the music that was being played. I thought--and we asked our server--isn't there anything you can do to disable that feature? We were here first. She said, no sorry nothing we can do. Someone (management/owner) decided that's what they want in the bar/rest. I was appalled, as were the 2 people with me, and the other 6 had left even before we did for that very reason- We felt bad because the guys that bought us the round had great intentions but were ultimately dissed. As were the other two and when we were finished with our food, we left too. We would have stayed at least a couple of hours longer had the music not become an issue. My message to management is this: Clearly it was a business decision to keep 'Touch Tunes" and allow this to happen-the licensing check must be really big? Well you just lost some previously very loyal customers to all of your competitors-they all have good food too and there is no real reason to go to Aberdeen anymore now (for me and my colleagues) that the awesome music is taken out of the equation. In my humble opinion , to allow your patrons to bid on what music gets played creates an environment that encourages ill will, not good will. And even worse at the expense to them and profit to you that clearly sends a message you are not about customer/ return business happiness. We ended up leaving with our $10 still left in the juke box. We would have stayed had the music been played the way we paid our money for. We didn't leave because of bad music-we left because we paid for our 'good' music and didn't get to hear it. And it's not about what's 'good ' or not . Whether you love top 40, hip-hop, rap or whatever, no matter what TYPE of music you love you won't get to hear it, because someone else with different taste will out-bid you. Final message and yelp rating goes out to all of you patrons who enjoy great food, great staff and great music when you go out to a neighborhood bar restaurant. That message is: 1 star for the AWESOME server, staff and great food here, and 4 'no-stars' for the horrible music experience we endured. So if music is important to you in your choice of where to go--and there are a lot of great choices in this neighborhood--do not go here--I know I will not repeat. read more

This is a really great spot that I've passed a million times before. Don't pass it! Great spot for date night as it's a short walk from the Grand blue line stop. Nice selection of beers and the food was fantastic. We split some fish tacos and a crawfish banger - you read that correctly. The fish was fried perfectly and very well put together, and despite not knowing what a crawfish sausage would taste like, I feel like it was spot on. Big flavors. I'll definitely return...when you see "chiliyaki" as a wing sauce option, you kind of need to explore that. read more

Was craving a good burger after working out and a friend recommended Aberdeen Tap. It was a great choice! There was a $5 burger special for Wednesday evening that came with a mound of steak fries. The burger was delicious, with lots of fresh onions, tomatoes and lettuce and a great pretzel bun. Love this place! read more

My prior experiences at this bar were good drinks, fun staff, great jukebox and good vibe. I have always liked this place until we went on 1/20/19. Went there after dinner for a few drinks. The bar staff had the jukebox paused and we're listening to an iPod or something....ok until the songs started to repeat. Finally one of the bartenders took the touch tunes jukebox off pause and my party added about $20 to it. After the first song, it was put back on pause....when asked why, we were told that they wanted to listen to a few of their songs (which by the way we heard on repeat over the past hour).....I thought bar staff were there to service the customer and not the other way around. Why didn't I think of this before!? I telecommute a few times a month, but for some reason I never thought to set up shop at a bar, rather than the usual cafe. The Aberdeen Tap was my first official bar office, and I would definitely recommend it to all telecommuters. Here's why: - Opens at 11am starting on Wednesday. - WiFi! - The garage door-style front means you can enjoy the breeze without fighting the sun's glare on your laptop. - Nice beer selection, including tasty low percentage options (alcoholic ginger beer!) so you can drink up and still write coherent emails. - Fresh food options for a healthy lunch. (This, however, did not stop me from ordering the fried mac 'n' cheese.) - If extra quiet is needed, they have a semi-private back room. - And, of course, friendly staff is always a plus. Aberdeen is awesome. The epitome of your favorite neighbrohood bar. It's friendly with a huge outdoor patio and delicious food. I've gone over 30 times and I can't believe I haven't reviewed them yet. I'm really obsessed with their Southwest Salad and chicken wings. The salad is tossed in some mildly spicy ranch dressing with corn, slices of avocado and grilled chicken. The wings are huge and super yummy and definitely try a side of their sweet potato totssssSssS! So good. Parking is usually tough, so leave the keys at home and walk. read more

I have been carefully considering whether or not to write this review because I love the Aberdeen Tap so much I do not want to foster competition for my favorite spot at the bar. Bottom line: this is the perfect Chicago neighborhood bar. It is no frills, often with 90's early 2000's hip hop/rap playing and bartenders who know every lyric. They have a patio outside where you can even bring your favorite four-legged friend which I love. They have a great selections of beers so I'm confident everyone can find something they like. The food is great. The first several times I came I just wanted to have a drink but I have slowly begun to work my way through the menu and it's amazing. First rule of ordering: you need the fried mac and cheese squares. I know what you're thinking. It sounds like preprocessed fair food. It's not. It is bite-sized pieces of heaven. Just trust me. They also have a great selection of other bar food including grinders and bangers. I recently ordered the lamb banger which is served with a truffle giardiniera. It had great flavor and paired well with the sweet potato tots I ordered. They also have a great buttermilk ranch at Aberdeen so if you're a true mid-westerner who requires a side of ranch with most items they have you covered. If I was a local, I would make The Aberdeen Tap a regular spot! The atmosphere is pleasant and hip, service is attentive (keep in mind to cut the waitress some slack if she is the only one there and the place is packed!) and the food is delicious! We ordered the fried mac and cheese, the hush puppies and bbq wings as starters. Everything was good, but the hush puppies were freaking AMAZING. Hot, fresh little balls of savory yet sweet cornmeal, perfectly seasoned and a little gooey in the middle. For dinner, I ordered the slow braised pork belly grinder that came with sauteed mustard greens and a nice smear of apple sauce on top. It was probably the best sandwich I have had in years, touches of salty and sweet, the pork belly was cooked to perfection and the bread was nicely toasted to contrast the softness of the meat. As a side I chose the sweet potato tots - they were good but with the sweetness of the sandwich I probably should have gone with the regular fries. Reasonably priced local beers, friendly and helpful waitstaff, cool ambiance, location tucked away from the main hubbub of downtown--we're fans. Plus, whatever this local golden ale is that's on tap tonight is delicious. We'll hopefully be bringing some of our friends back here before we leave, because we're sure they'll love it, too. This pub has a warm and inviting staff and design. My friend and I chose seating outside and were promptly given water and menus. The variety of the menu- from alligator and lamb to crayfish sausage, is refreshing and adventurous couture. I ordered the curry chicken salad sandwich with a side of sweet potato tots. My only complaint is when I asked if there was a surcharge for tots instead of fries, I was told no, but was charged $2 extra. The beer list is extensive, though I wish the beer specials were less than $9 per beer! Cozy pub, but expect to feel your wallet lighten at the expense of good grub and atmosphere. SHORT REVIEW: This place rocks! Great food! Quick service. Even better staff! This is the perfect neighborhood bar. LONG REVIEW: -- SERVICE. Zak and Chris were super welcoming. Super nice. My first instinct was to give Aberdeen Tap 3 stars, but after giving it some thought, I realized this was simply due to the fact that the guy at the table next to me had the most obnoxious, ear-splitting, meal-ruining laugh I have ever heard. And I guess I can't blame Aberdeen Tap for that, can I? Although, I don't think anyone would have a problem if they had asked him to leave... Anyways, this is a great little neighborhood bar. The music / game is a little loud for a small space. But all in all everyone seems to have a great time there. Especially the guy at the next table over. Went here for the first time on Monday night with my boyfriend after the Paramount Room was too crowded. This is a hidden gem, and I'm so glad we discovered it. The Aberdeen Tap has a great draft list, and a really unique menu of delicious grinders, bangers (sausages) and sandwiches. We started with the Mac and Cheese squares, which were little delicious hot gooey bites of cheese. Then for main course the Bangers and Grinders were $7 on Monday, so we decided on one of each. I had the Veal Banger with bacon and blue cheese sauce. It was absolutely delicious, especially with a side of sweet potato tot to cut the salty from the main course. My boyfriend had the Pulled Pork Grinder and Fries The best part, though, was how friendly the staff was. The bartender / waiter was fantastic and very helpful with recommendations. Another staff member brought us out a little dish of cassoulet to try - the kitchen was experimenting with a new grinder an d they wanted us to try it. it was HEAVENLY - the most delicious little casserole of duck fat, white bean, gooey savory-ness. This place is a hidden gem, and I kind of like it that way. I live right down the road from The Aberdeen Tap and I am currently working on trying to become a local regular here :). This place is amazing. Great selection of beer, cool servers, and the food is fantastic. Seriously. Try the macaroni and cheese squares. You won't regret it. The outdoor patio is a perfect place to relax or bring a date to for a more low key time. I haven't been here yet on the weekend so I'm not sure if it's a good "party" spot but I've had a great time every time I have been. Prices are very reasonable. A group of us was sitting on the patio for a few hours sharing food and cocktails, we asked for the bill and wanted to split it 3 ways so after doing the calculations, we wrote on the bottom of the bill specific instructions - what to charge to each card, including tip into the totals. She said, "are you questioning the computer system, it's what everyone ordered!" Our bill was about $255 so we wanted to charge $150, $80 and $60. This is a 15% tip totaling $35. Well our waitress, Kitty is her name - came back to our table and said, "Um your guys math was wrong". She gave us our booklets and took it upon herself to charge everyone's card for what she felt was a good amount for her tip. Keep in mind we left more than our bill total, so it wasn't as if we did pay enough and had to make up the difference. After adding up the totals she charged, it was an extra $17 to one's card which she never informed us of the increase and left even more room for us to tip on top of the 23% she just gave herself and snuck into our bills. We gave her specific instruction and she completely ignored the direction and gave herself a $52 tip. We thought that was totally inappropriate and sneaky so I got up to call her out on it. She held my arm and was so apologetic. She said she meant to remove all that but totally forgot... then came to the table and apologized but it definitely wasn't sincere. She knew exactly what she was trying to do and we called her out on it and expressed how we felt she was being sneaky and it's not appreciated! She then got defensive and asked what would make it better and offered shots in a very nasty tone which we already essentially paid for. At that time another bartender came out to try to make it right, poured us a shot of Jameson. Once he left, she stopped by and said, "Feel better now guys!" What a bitchy way to act throughout the evening. So to say the least, we were disgusted by her behavior and attitude so that Kitty is one sly minx so you better watch your pocketbooks! read more

So you know the saying, quick cheap good, pick two. This bar has finally proven that this is just a saying, because goddamnit, the kitchen here is good cheap and faster than quick. I've been here on a crowded night where they seem slammed and place an order, less than fifteen minutes later I have immaculately cooked bar food. Not your regular bar food. I've waited and watched in empty estelle's while someone painstakingly overcooks my burger for 45 minutes and gives me limpy fries. My friend, this will never happen here. You order, 10 or 15 minutes later, before you start wondering where you food is, an amazing basket will appear before you. I'd driven by The Aberdeen Tap dozens of times, but it wasn't until I moved into River West that a friend suggested it for dinner. I love eating outside in the summer, and I visited it three times in a couple of months. Especially like that it's on a street without the heavy traffic and auto exhaust that spoil so many outdoor restaurants. The border of planters with flowers adds a nice touch. And street parking wasn't a problem. The first visit I ordered the fish tacos, which were breaded and kind of over-powered the fish. But I loved the Duck Confit grinder, an open-faced sandwich with duck, garlic aioli and fried duck skin (ask to substitute the fries with sweet potato tots). And since I'm a fan of hummus, I want to recommend theirs, which is homemade and definitely superior to the stuff that comes in containers. Service is always important, as it can make or break an evening. Have always had friendly, efficient service here. Was particularly impressed by the seamless way our server moved us to another table when a large group of guys nearby became really "vocal." I've never made it inside other than to take a quick look, but now that winter is almost upon us, will definitely come back. I used to LOVE this place and kept going back for their wedge salad, but they've since taken it off the menu (BRING IT BACKK!). That and the chili are the only things I've had there (the chili is also divine), so other than that, I cannot speak for the food. Service is always fairly quick and extremely friendly. They've all got just a bit of sass to them... but not too much. They have a great beer selection, which always impresses my friends when I bring them. Great outdoor space. During the winter, it can get a bit crowded in there (a testament to how great it is, I suppose), but during the summer, the outdoor space really makes a huge difference. Stopped in here last night for the first time after walking/biking by it every day for, like, 6 months. Who knew the little corner bar on a quiet stretch of hubbard would be so awesome? Really chill, comfortable ambiance inside. The patio looked really nice during the summer although it was too cool to sit out there last night. I would certainly come back in warmer weather and camp out for some al fresco eats and drinks. The food menu looked off the hook even though we had eaten dinner and just got beers... Duck, boar, alligator? AT THE BAR DOWN THE STREET?!?! Can't wait to go back and try some of these offerings. Beer list was solid, probably 12 craft beers on tap and a fat list of bottles.
