I randomly decided to go to The Bean Box instead of Starbucks. Best decision I made today. I ordered the Carmel blended drink and it was soooo good. Way better than the frappuccino at Starbucks. It was delicious and creamy. I had it with regular milk today but will try non-dairy next time. The food looks good. I heard a lot of people ordering something. The wait wasn't too bad. The lady came out the booth and asked my order while I waited so when I got to the window my drink was already ready. I think the really cool part is that you can drive thru both directions. Ordered online. Took them a half hour just to cancel my order because they didn't have the ingredients required to make our meals - meals that were on their menu. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but if I order food, I kind of expect to both receive and eat the food that I order. Maybe I've just been pampered too much by every single other restaurant I've ever ordered from that delivered food that I ordered for me to eat. Nine years ago I went through a near fatal health crisis and was forced to give up cigarettes, fast food, red meat and caffeine. I was drinking French roast or Italian roast coffee daily. I am still caffeine free but every once in a while I miss the taste of a strong coffee. I discovered this place on accident going to Barrons Market. I like a strong decaf americano once in a while and these guys get it right. It's strong, thick and decaffeinated. Nobody makes my drink as well as these guys do. I can't have decaf too often, and most coffee shops can't seem to get this drink right so I stick to the Bean Box. My roommate says the regular coffee is top shelf, too. I lived in Loma Portal and this was my stop before I got on the freeway to go to the office. The Bean Box makes good espresso. The taste and quality of the drinks are consistent. Popular with me: lattes and mochas, both hot and cold. Their baked goods are fresh, and if you like being healthy and avoid complex carbohydrates, well they sell fruit too. So I was torn between 2 or 3 stars and I'm in a good mood today so I went with 3. This place is okay, I hate supporting Starbucks (although I gotta admit I do on occasions, oops) and this place has a drive thru (like Starbucks) but never has a horrendous line like the Starbucks across the street does. However the service is a bit blah. At least at Starbucks they make you feel welcome and pretend to be in a good mood. Every time I come here the girls don't smile at me or anything. And they're usually chit chatting with a passer by and take a minute to acknowledge me, but still faster than Starbucks so whatever I guess. The coffee is okay. I mean in not a coffee buff. I'm pregnant with a 17 month old toddler so you could basically give me swamp water and tell me it has caffeine in it and I'd drink it anyways. This isn't to say the coffee here is comparable to swamp water but I'm just saying when I'm running on 4 hours of sleep and I have a screaming toddler in the back seat, I don't care about the quality. Anyways one thing that turned me off about this place is when I bought a coffee, the total came out to like 3 dollars and something, I paid with a 5 and the barista have me the change, held onto the dollar and said "This dollar is for me right?" Hmmm... Well yeah I was gonna tip you but it would have been a lot more polite and a lot less awkward for me if you would have just let me do it on my own accord. I've been out of the service industry for a few years now, is that something they do now? Anticipate a tip? I give the coffee quality and consistency 5 stars, every time! In the 11 years I have been going here, I have never ever had a bad cup of coffee. I have outlived 3 owners and found them to maintain quality each time. The price is fair. I get a cup of black coffee for the most part, but before my vegan days, I loved their vanilla blended coffee beverages (add a shot of espresso!) and that was still cheaper then any big evil coffee chains! They also have amazing pastries. I once loved their crumb coffee cake and oak bars, but now I just occasionally get their packaged one made by a local company (can't remember their name!) They're vegan and surprisingly delicious. The owner, Kat, is a sweat heart! She always gives our dogs treats and has a great attitude. Sometimes the other girls who work can be impersonal, but I think that is mostly a language barrier thing. I have gotten half my work addicted to this place since it is right down the street! The Bean Box is a great little drive-thru located in the Baron's Shopping Center, and conveniently located right before you hit the freeway entrance to Interstate 8. It has been here about 3 years and is popular with driver's, walker's, bike-riders-you name it. They have very nice people that work there and make great fancy coffee drinks-the most popular being the Mexican Coffee and the White Chocolate, but the everyday coffee is great too. They also offer fruit, muffins, pastries, and juices in their drive-thru-which has saved me many a trip to other coffee purveyors-especially when I'm in a big hurry. Stopped by after grocery shopping at Barons and ordered a medium iced cold brew which was $2.55. The woman working was not overly friendly and was trying to take orders from me in my car on one side and two people on foot on the other side. When she handed me my credit card back with the receipt to sign, the bottom of the receipt was cut off, but she told me I had to just sign "anywhere" and then immediately went back to making coffee for other customer. I signed my name and the receipt said $2.55. I was looking over my credit card charges today and she must have added a $2 tip on it for herself because I was charged $4.55. It took me time to write this....This is suppose to be a coffee station. My coffee red eye smelled like burritos. The vanilla latte had no foam or vanilla taste....I used to love this place....Afterwards, I circled around wondering what was up and I saw the sign that said sandwiches, burritos, bagels, eggs and bacon, etc. that I didn't originally see. My coffee a few months ago here was fine with no burrito smell. Their latte taste changed as well.... The two coffee girls were also talking in a foreign language and looking at me and my boy friend oddly, and I did not appreciate that! If I want cooked food, I certainly wouldn't buy it here, I'm going across the street to their competitor SB for a real red-eye, even though the line is long...
