Pretty good food , but we were not crazy about the Curry Pumpkin sauce over Soft Shell Crabs.

My reading is solely based on our bar experience at The Blue Hen- not the food. Was staying at the hotel and and dropped by the bar on a Saturday night. It was loud and pretty packed. We were lucky to get a spot at the bar. We had already eaten dinner elsewhere so we just got an order of biscuits which were really good and different drinks. My husband had the best old-fashioned he's ever had there! I enjoyed my bourbon slush drink. Our bartender was awesome and she let me sample both slushes so I can figure out which one I wanted. read more

Such a great experience at The Blue Hen! The staff is friendly and attentive. The food was amazing! I ordered the crab spaghetti and it exceeded my expectations, it was so delicious! My husband order the fried chicken and it was one of the tastiest fried chicken we have ever had. The food was so good we ate here again the next night! Also, the restaurant was kid friendly and both of my kids gobbled up their meals. If we ever come back to Rehoboth, we will for sure eat here again! read more

The Blue Hen - Crab Spaghetti! - American Near Me - Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

My husband and I loved Blue Hen so much on our first visit that we went again two nights later. The Blue Hen is great for a lot of reasons. They have a great happy hour that begins at 3pm, which is great if you are looking for a munchie - I can definitely vouch for the deliciousness of the lobster toast (which is great for $6...not sure I'd spend $12 on it to be honest). The food is consistently excellent - fresh, well-prepared, and well executed. On our first visit, I got the soft shell crab appetizer and the squid ink pasta and my husband got the crab cakes and the octopus. My husband said the octopus is one of the best he's ever had (and he looooves octopus and orders it often) - perfectly charred and had a great texture. My soft shell crab was lightly fried and not greasy at all. The squid ink pasta was very well-executed - it's a pretty simple dish but can be bland without the right seasoning - the Blue Hen nailed it, and tons of crab. My husband really enjoyed his crab cakes. On our second visit, we split the tuna crudo, and I had the cornmeal crusted cod and my husband had the salmon. The tuna crudo was a little different than I was expecting - it was actually in a bowl that was filled with coconut milk - it was good, but felt the portion was small for the price (probably because it's crudo) and there was just a LOT of coconut milk. However, the entrees did not disappoint - my husband's salmon was seared perfectly with crispy skin and my cod was just lightly fried with a lovely tasso ham sauce and some of the best grits I've ever had. Both fish portions were large and a great value. Both times we dined, Jordan was our server, and he was awesome - knowledgeable, friendly, and just provided excellent service overall. We'll definitely request him on our next visit! They have a great wine list - both by the glass and the bottle. Great, diverse selections that won't break the bank. They take reservations, which is great because you can head from a happy hour at a different restaurant and go to the Blue Hen for dinner, which isn't easy in a restaurant town like Rehoboth! Bonus - they will allow you to purchase a cheese plate to go and Rehoboth allows corkage so if there is any wine you don't finish, you can cork it and take it with you as well. We were staying at the Avenue, so we just walked upstairs with it. Can't wait to return to the Blue Hen! read more

Great meal here while we were on a quick vacation: fried oysters to start, and cod for dinner. I wouldn't normally order cod in favor of something more unusual when dining out, but the cornmeal crust and grits sounded delicious... and I was right. The crust was crisp and flavorful, while the creamy grits served as a counterpoint. The Manhattan with star anise was a nice start to the meal. read more

Charming, unique, delicious and amazing food/atmosphere. We ate here last night. The oysters were amazing, clean, plummy and fresh. The chef came from chicago. She went there for art school and came back to Delaware to take this restaurant to the next level and I can tell she accomplished just that. We like the fact that you can just turn and see her working on the kitchen. Oh oh oh , let's not forget the olive oil cake. I would have rated higher, 5 stars, if it wasn't for the negative. To start with the positives: Shorter wait time Oysters and Lobster were amazing Lobster toast was out of this world Great service overall Now the negative: As my main I ordered the crab cakes for $36. The crab cakes were a total miss for many reasons. The first is that it was under seasoned and little sauce. If there was a little more sauce it would have been great it terms of season. The second reason is why this is only 3 stars, there were large chunks of shells in the crab cakes. These shells were sharp and if I hadn't bitten into a few of them and noticed they were shells. My throat would been scratched up and bleeding. In a restaurant like this, and in most restaurants in general, I would expect little to no shell in the cakes. It is unacceptable to have it, luckily it was my last bite that I had the big piece, but still there was too much shell in the cakes. It was not just mine, it was my cousins as well, although not as big, thank goodness. Overall I will come back here but I will not be ordering crab cakes here again. Too expensive for quality served. read more

Overall, the Blue Hen was a decent restaurant that just doesn't shine in comparison to the many great restaurants in Rehoboth. The highlights of the evening - amazing service by our waiter, the corn chowder, and the macaroni and cheese side dish. Our waiter deserves five stars for his amazing service during the night including setting up the heater when he noticed I was cold. The rest of the evening was meh. Fried oysters paled in comparison to other places in Rehoboth, the fried cod tasted like it was came out of the freezer, and the fried chicken while moist, lacked any real flavor. Go there to enjoy great service, have a few drinks around the fire pit, and then head over to another restaurant for dinner. read more

We have been staying at the Avenue and had never been to the Blue Hen and it is right in the hotel opens at 4:00pm nice impressive menu, we don't normally in when they open we will hav eaten and before we get back. But this time made plans to check it out. Nice inside kind of dark most of the people were eating outside on the patio. Glad to see the Blue Hen has survived the pandemic and is doing well! While our server should have been wearing a well- fitting mask instead of the useless bandana he had on, he was sweet and helpful. We ordered a pinot noir that didn't meet our standards and he graciously and immediately replaced it with a better one. Food came quickly, even at 830pm! Our tamale appetizer was fine, but a tad salty. The scallops and broken rice were AMAZING! Dessert was disappointing, though, as there was only ice cream for our gluten free requirement (one of us has celiac). The taste of the chocolate almond was not pleasant and they took it off the bill. Classy! We still had about $100 to pay with tip, but we were able to take the wine bottle with us. The music and ambiance are pretty clubby and loud, next time I'd like to try the outdoor tables. read more

Checked in at 6:37, party of 4, 45 minute wait. That was amazing. Until 45 minutes passed and nothing. Visited the hostess stand and was assured that once a lingering party left we were next. We were seated at 7:45. Server arrived quickly, poured us some water unknowingly spilling water on the center of the table on the bottle list. My daughter cleaned up and we ordered. The wrong appetizer was brought to the table but that was quickly rectified. After we finished appetizers the wait began and it became obvious to me that the server was spending more and more time at tables with larger parties that were ordering bottles of wine. Other tables that ordered after us were getting their meals, one after the next. At one point the server brought us refills on the soft beverages. Then the server disappeared again. Over 30 minutes had passed from when we finished the appetizers. So I finally asked our server what the issue was. Within a few minutes the meal came. Dishes from the appetizer course were still on the table and we had to ask to have them cleared to make room to eat comfortably. Several of the challenges I encountered this evening could have been avoided with an explanation. At 45 minutes when the table wasn't ready, just call me and explain I get it. People are on vacation they are lingering and it isn't a huge space. I get it. But, that never happened until I took the initiative. If the kitchen or the service staff is short bc everyone is having staffing shortages - again I get it. This is a problem everywhere. Just set expectations. Sadly the service is not at the same level as the food that is getting executed from that kitchen. The lobster toast and biscuits are consistent year after year. The crab cake is worth every penny bc it is fat with crab not filler and is pan fried gently. The scallops were tender and corn was so sweet. The crab spaghetti is always yummy, but the tomatoes were more campari in size as compared to the grape tomatoes last year. The kitchen staff bangs out solid plates of food that celebrates the region. And honestly, I wouldn't have even placed this review on Yelp, but there was no contact section on the restaurants website. I've eaten here every Summer since it opened. I came from the Lobster Toast and Fried Chicken (have mercy). And we kept coming back. But the service this year was way below where it should have been. I finally left at 9:16 pm. That is longer than I had expected to spend and it is also not good for the restaurant to have customers occupying a table for so long. What ever the challenge is we look forward to seeing you resolve it. read more

Going here at the end of the busy summer season was such a great experience! Due to Covid the dining room wasn't nearly as crowded as usual. At our server's suggestion we ordered the biscuits and jam. Could have skipped dinner and polished off the cast iron pan. These are very very filling so if you are ordering a full meal you will have leftovers! My husband go the famous fried chicken and it was a huge meal! The sides (Mac n cheese and collard greens certainly made for the ultimate comfort dish! This is a review based on 2 visits earlier this summer. The first time we were staying at hotel and I wandered into bar for a drink as my wife was dressing for a party. Sat at crowded bar as happy hour was ending and I ordered one their specialties, a mint julep. The bartender made it lovingly using fresh mint and great bourbon. He was cheerful, informative and delightful. The julep was the best I have ever had! Second visit was 3 weeks later with my wife. We showed up around 6 and found 2 stools at the bar and my wife wanted the mint julep I had raved over. Different bartender that did not know how to make a drink. It was overly sweet, lacking enough bourbon and really poorly presented. She was as surly as the first bartender was delightful. My wife asked her to remake the undrinkable drink and we got a straight course of eye rolling the rest of the time there. We ordered the seafood platter for 2 app and it was very good but skimpy. The salmon tartare and shrimp ceviche were great but barely enough for 2 bites. Hard to share that! The dish was 40-50 $$ and while good was underwhelming. The music in the bar was obnoxiously loud to the point a conversation was hard to have. They are on a street with some great restaurants and they need to do a better job. read more

I came here on a Sunday afternoon. There is street parking available, that will take a mix of luck and patience to find. Their Happy Hour menu runs from 3pm-5pm daily, but seating for Happy Hour is limited to the bar or outside. As a table, we basically ordered most of the Snacks Happy Hour menu: - Chicken Wings - This comes with chicken with house dry rub and green chili ranch. The skin was very crispy, yet the chicken was still moist. One of the best chicken wings I have had! - Lobster Toast - This comes with lobster spread with hot pepper jelly atop toast. This was my favorite of all of the dishes... I ordered TWO! They do not skimp on the lobster and the hot pepper jelly adds a nice kick to each bite of the toast. - Deviled Eggs - This comes with four curried egg yolk pieces with lobster and chives. I liked the lobster topping and the addition of the curry spices into the yolk... it made your typical deviled eggs a little more unique. - Crab Fries - This comes with lump crab, old bay and cheese sauce atop fries. All of the flavors work so well, another favorite dish of mine. - Softshell Slider - This comes with a single slider with one softshell crab with lettuce and tartar sauce. Another delicious dish, the only thing I would recommend is less lettuce... it was spilling out of the sandwich. - Shrimp Cocktail - This comes with four large shrimps and cocktail sauce. Decent, nothing amazing and not terrible... the shrimp were very large and comes with the tails intact. Service was great here, food came out quickly and we were constantly being checked on. If their Happy Hour menu was this good, I can't imagine how good their full menu must be! I definitely plan on making a trip back here next time I am in Rehoboth :) read more

A bit up and down on a few things. We went two nights in a row. The staff we encountered were friendly. However, there were some oddities. Thursday we weren't give any kids menus, but Friday we were (no big deal). What is a big deal, is that the 2nd night, we got a restaurant week menu which had been going on for the previous 5 days. WTF? We mentioned it to our waiter, and he just kinda shrugged his shoulders. No notifying the manager, no complimentary drink, etc. No one else in town mentioned a restaurant week this week either. Odd. The good: biscuits were by far the best out of 3/4 places in town, my wife liked the spaghetti squid, and I enjoyed the lobster toast and duck. I liked the cheesecake and the beer selection is great. The scallops weren't bad, but were a bit dry. I didn't like the fried chicken (breading fell off). Had some friends in town and we went to Blue Hen. Made a reservation and they were very accommodating when we called to change the time a bit. Atmosphere was great, although a nearby table was very loud. Our server Ben was very attentive to our needs and knowledgeable of the menu. All of our appetizers and entrees were superb! We made two stops here on our last trip! First of all, it's convenient, as it is attached to the Avenue Inn, which is where we were staying. So we went in with low expectations, as a "hotel" restaurant. Oh my goodness, were we wrong! This place is fantastic! The first trip we only had drinks, but Ron, the bartender, was fantastic and we said we'd be back. The second round we had drinks (a yummy grapefruit mule!) and Ron suggested two desserts as a sweet treat. We had a toffee banana pudding in a jar and the most heavenly, gorgeous chocolate cake with mint chocolate chip ice cream I think I've ever had!
