If you're into Dungeons, you'll like the downstairs bar area. Very dark and dingy, often crowded, and the music is always loud. I know most people would be turned off by that description but it's a good spot in my opinion. If you're into a more elegant place to dine and catch up with friends, then the upstairs bar and dining area would be more than suitable for you and company. I've been there with a group on several occasions and they've got couches and chairs for you and your friends to converse and have some booze. Either way, this is one of my more favorite places to go in Baltimore. I've never actually had anything from their Dining Menu although I've been told it was good. I always get the bar food or should I say I always get the Brewer's Art Cheeseburger with Rosemary Garlic Fries which is a meal fit for a King. Simply one of the best burgers you can get around the city. Enough said about the food, sorry. Now for the finale.. Brewer's Art Resurrection...POW! One of my favorite beers. An abbey-style ale that from their website description which says, "During the fermentation of the first batch, the yeast died and was resurrected". Coming in at 7.25% alc. this beer will get you drunk. It may be pricey but it's worth it. Luckily they also started selling it in 6 packs at some shops around Maryland, also a bit pricey but still well worth it. Their other beers are also great too including the Ozzy and the Zodiac. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area of Mt. Vernon. Great service, fantastic food, and delicious beer, what more could you ask for? Sadly I don't live around there anymore but that doesn't matter cause I try to make it there every now and again. So do yourself a favor and do it up....POW! read more

I loved the Mac and Cheese and the Rosemary fries...REALLY?! THEY WERE DELISH! Oh, and the crowd was such a fun time--everyone was meshing well and it was amazing. When I first walked in, I wasn't sure if it was a restaurant or a bar, but after getting used to where I was, it was worked out pretty well. The one drink that I ordered....what was it called...it was like Raising the Dead or OOH it was called the Resurrection! I'm not sure if I just have a bad bad taste for beer, but I thought it tasted HORRIBLE. I mean...the aftertaste was SO BAD. If you swished it around in your mouth it tasted like roses though. This place was not exactly what I had imagined. I thought it'd be more like a dog fish... pub type affair but Brewer's Art is more of a restaurant than a alcoholic establishment. A reservation is a must... thanks to Open Table. Once seated, the waiter promptly came by to take our drink orders and gave us our depressing bread basket (nothing but average slices of wheat bread and round BALLS OF BUTTER). They have an awesome beer sampler if you want to try a little bit of everything (like me). For $5 you can get 2oz of every beer on tap. My favorite out of the 6 was the Proletary Ale which is a dark and smooth beer .. kinda tasted like coffee which is wonderful since I'm so much of a coffee fanatic. For starters, I ordered the Parsnip Bisque which has roasted apples, cardamom and crème fraîche ($8). The bisque was very rich and smooth with nice hints of sweetness (but not overwhelming).... definitely recommended. For my main dish, I ordered the grilled sirloin steak medium well with a side of rosemary garlic fries and red wine shallot sauce ($28). The steak with wine sauce was nothing but average. It's truly hard to find a good piece of steak in Maryland. The shining element was of course the rosemary garlic fries! Not so much rosemary but heavy on the garlic flavor which made it extremely addicting. Yummy! And... lastly.. the dessert. It is very hard to mess up dessert for me.. but the dessert I ordered here was absolutely disgusting. I didn't think it was possible but serious sugar overload... Went here with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson and found the restaurant to be very, very nice. It appears to be an old house that has been divided up into 3 separate areas on the first floor - there is a second bar in the basement as well. You enter into the bar area, which was hopping, before walking into a small dining area followed by a larger room. The architectural details are impressive and our grandson figured out how to open the door hiding the radiator. Our meals were wonderful and they accommodated my wife with a flute free scallops dish which was actually just two appetizers. The scallops were huge and seared to perfection. I had a veal roll stuffed with sausage - something I have never had, and it was excellent. Their beers are good and pricing overall is above average - but so is the experience. Our grandson had Mac & Cheese, which he loved. One criticism is that the upstairs bar, which is in the front of the house, can be a little distracting if you are trying to enjoy a quiet dinner. Came here for restaurant week with a reservation for two. My friend and I were seated quickly in the back (great decor!) and shared dishes: Appetizers: 1. Heirloom Tomato Salad: Beautiful colors and flavors! Great mix of fresh tomatoes with an awesome dill sauce and yogurt on the side. 2. Marinated Wax Beans: good, but not fantastic. The beans were a little too firm, but I wasn't sure if they are supposed to be that way or if they were undercooked. The roasted celery root was really interesting, with a soft texture. Entrees: 1. Sourdough Stuffed Quail: fantastic presentation and delicious! The meat was tender, the stuffing was soft and flavorful, the fennel gave a nice bite. My favorite part was the pureed eggplant--SO good! The sauce also had a bit of a spice, which provided a nice kick! 2. Wagyu Beef Pot Roast: super savory and filling! The beef was so soft and tender, it fell apart into a rich sauce with lima beans. Yum! Dessert: 1. Chocolate Proletary Torte: if you like chocolate, this is for you! Pure velvety chocolatey goodness. I also tasted a hint of coffee in it, which I really enjoyed. 2. Upside Down Peach Cake: our waitress described this as a cinnamon donut with peaches and she was right in a good way! If you want to get a classy sort of beer drunk, this is your place. Just skip the formal dining. The Brewer's Art is grounded in their beer selection, which is freaking amazing. I had the Ozzy, Resurrection, and their Bread and Cheese Ale - all were smooth and spectacular. Their brewers have a level of skill rarely seen, even in Baltimore. The food was significantly less impressive. I had a Sourdough Stuffed Quail, which was, to be honest, a pain to eat and not terribly flavorful. The Butter Lettuce appetizer was much better. Along the same vein, the Crispy Duroc Pork Belly was great, but I was not impressed by their Lamb Neck. In other words, stick to the alcohol and you'll get the best Brewer's has to offer. read more

Amazing Brussels sprouts but other food was average. The Crispy Brussels Sprouts were divine: light and crunchy and the walnuts and cranberries made for a good combo. Wasn't a huge fan of the Lamb Neck--I loved the accompanying watercress but the actual meat was a bit too fatty. Bread was a bit dry and hard. The chocolate torte is rich but average. -Review only for the 2 Bar Areas on a Friday night- It was really hot... Stifling hot... The beers were alright (tried the Resurrection and Ozzie), but space can be pretty tight and due to the amount of bodies and poor ventilation, the space (both upstairs and downstairs) were too stuffy and uncomfortably hot. Overall, the Ozzie was a much easier, lighter beer to drink. But, I liked the Resurrection too. Sadly, the "I'm going to melt at any second and this beer is warming up wayyy too fast in my hand" really ruined the experience for me. We came in for drinks after we had dinner nearby last night. I didn't get anything, but a few other people in our party did. They seemed to enjoy their brews and the bar staff seemed friendly and attentive. With high ceilings, tall doors, ornate decor and just the right lighting, the atmosphere upstairs was very cool. I especial liked the taps at the bar--they were so unique. I was wearing jeans and felt kind of under-dressed while our party grabbed a round and starting a tab and the upstairs bar. It was crowded, so we headed downstairs in search of seating on the lower level. We were fortunate enough to find a couple seats, but the cellar area is nowhere near as cool or opulent-seeming as upstairs. It was really dark and dank, dusty and dungeons. I'm sure this is cool for some people, but I wasn't into it. Overall a neat upscale-feeling place (upstairs at least) and the food looked really good. I'd be willing to come back to eat, but I'm staying out of the underground room. read more

Another Baltimore Restaurant Week success! I came for dinner with my boyfriend's family and we were all impressed! We dined upstairs and it was a very classy, but interesting place to have dinner. It looked like it might have been a house in it's past life. For my appetizer, I had the Liptauer Cheese Spread. It was pretty good and had a nice kick to it. It was kind of a lot though just for one person so I would only get this if you plan on sharing. For my entree I had the Steak Frites. Oh man, this was good! The steak was great! And it came with a salad and their famous rosemary fries! The fries were amazing! My only complaint was that most of the fries were about a half an inch long so it was kind of annoying to eat. And for dessert I had the bread pudding! This was great as well. It was actually pretty light and not heavy compared to other bread puddings I've had. I also tried the Beazley beer and loved it! It was a Belgium-style beer so if you like Blue Moons or Shocktops you'll like this one! Service was phenomenal from beginning to end! Our waiter knew what we wanted before we even did! He saw me struggling with the cheese spread and he came over and offered to box it up for me right away. He also boxed all of our other food up for us as well. He made great recommendations to us and has us laughing throughout dinner. He also mentioned that they change their menu about four times a year, so that they are always offering the freshest ingredients. I've only checked out the bar area of the The Brewer's Art, so I can only speak to that experience. I love the vibe and location on Charles St., with a great view out into the streets of Baltimore (and the mantle overflowing with whiskey varietals.) I would consider it a great place to wind down the day during happy hour with a pint of Resurrection (I plan on trying the other house brews soon.) I've fallen in love with the Rosemary Garlic Fries (City Paper Best of Baltimore) and and the Tuscan Tomato Soup with Parmesan Gougères. It can get a bit crowded in the main bar area, so if you're not looking for a zoo, come down by 4:30-5ish to get a seat. read more

They have always had at least 5 or 6 beers on tap so I never have to visit without trying something new on tap. On this Occasion it was semi-crowded for a Saturday and they had the 14th anniversary beer on tap - Sun King, a tripel. I like the decor which is classy without being pretentious and they have interesting art which brings to mind dream-like scenes. Recently visited Brewer's Art after ages (literally - I think it's been over 7 years!), and was pleasantly surprised to find that nothing has changed. We went to the downstairs bar which has a distinctively different feel from the upstairs portion - way more casual, a tad divey, but very charming nonetheless. Despite the space being small, it's set up so that you're not on top of each other - and there's quite a few tables that are tucked away so that it's more private. Couple that with the dim lighting and the candles, and you've got yourself a cute date spot. I recommend trying the beer flight - comes with 6 pours that give you a range of tastes so that you can find your favorite(s) - probably the latter because it's hard to just pick one. First off, Cory was a fantastic waiter. He knew the food and drink menus like the back of his hand and was honest while also being properly descriptive. He was already aware of my allergy when we sat down so he gave a whole run down of what on the menu they could alter or was already gluten-free as it was prepared. I started with a gin on the rocks and the boy had a Haymarket. We also each decided to get something different with dinner. Cory recommended a glass of the Malbec so I went with that and the boy had one of their cocktails... the Stash? He loved it. I just requested that my wine come with dinner. We shared the clams and duck egg & prosciutto wrapped asparagus appetizers. Clams were good but could have been cleaned just a little better. The broth was tasty and I liked the onions in with everything. The asparagus was light, refreshing and overall different. Really great flavor. For dinner I ordered the Grilled Veal Flank Steak and the boy had the Grilled Kassler Rippchen. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted phenomenal. However about half way through my plate I did have to ask for that glass of wine I'd ordered. We gave in and even ordered dessert after the large meal. I had the ginger ice cream, which is not on the menu, and my boyfriend ordered the Pecan Tart. The ice cream was clearly homemade and if you love ginger, you'll want more. The tart came with homemade caramel, at the very least, and he said it was great. The plate was clean before we left. Really interesting atmosphere. Fun service. Wow this place was surprisingly good. We sat next to the front windows in the bar area. There they have a full menu. The downstairs bar does not. We each had two cocktails. I wish I could recall their names. The cucumber and ginger was the true winner and the jalapeño tequila was the runner up. We started with the gazpacho (why we came in the first place) and the wagyu beef carpaccio. Wow. Both of these dishes blew us away. Perfectly balanced in every way. I don't eat a lot of red meat any more but I will always have room for wagyu. Both dishes were large enough that we could share them and feel satisfied. We then moved on to the baked mac and cheese and the pork belly blt. I loved my mac and cheese, despite burning myself on the skillet a few times (amateur hour over here). It's nice and crispy on top. I was a bit grossed out by the idea of the pork belly.....until I took a bite. It was like air. Melted in your mouth. Service was alright. Brewer's Art is very well known around the area and is located in the University of Baltimore vicinity. I was very excited to try this place after hearing rave reviews. I started off with the "Resurrection" beer. It was ok, but I didn't quite feel resurrected after drinking this beer. I had better ales in other bars. Next, I wanted to try the mac and cheese. Frankly speaking, I thought that it had too much panko bread crumbs on it that shadowed the richness of mac and cheese. It wasn't the best I've had, and I would most likely pass mac and cheese the next time I make a trip to this bar. Finally, for my entree, I chose to have their famous Steak Frites, and this was indeed the highlight of the meal. The steak was cooked almost to perfection (medium rare), and the rosemary garlic fries fabulously complemented the steak. The steak was very juicy, and one of the better steaks I've had in the entire East Coast. Service was just about average. I have been to Brewer's art twice, but had their beers at a lot of the local restaurants (the owl bar across the street in the Belvedere and Mick O'sheas pub a few blocks away, for example, serve some Brewers art). Their resurrection ale is always the classic I recommend for all my friends when they visit. I have had their Tiny Tim and Beazly as well and both are delicious also. The stand out for me, though, is their mac and cheese. I am fairly picky about mac and cheese, preferring a Thomas Jefferson (yes, one of our founding fathers popularized what is now one of the most popular dishes in America) style more dry mac and cheese. Brewer's cheese mix is delicous, their macaroni have a great chew, and there is the perfect ratio of crunchy crumb topping to noodle so that there is texture with every bite. Whenever friends come visit, I like to take them to the one-two punch of the Belvedere Owl bar followed by Brewer's Art. It gives them a look at the cool architecture seen in the city, as well as the history, fun quirks and delicious food that Baltimore has to offer. read more

This place is EPIC. It's got a fancy upstairs but I prefer the dark and dingy downstairs. They have a great selection of beer; as it is a microbrewery. They have a delicious bar menu with a kickass burger. It is juicy and comes with steak fries that are thin and crispy and topped with Rosemary. The place gets extremely crowded and can be hard to find seats in large groups downstairs. Getting their on the early side of the evening is suggested if you want to get a seat with a group. read more

Worst meal! I met a friend last night 01/07/2019 at this restaurant. We ate downstairs and I must say it was the worst meal I had in a while. My friend got there first and advised me we have to go to the bar and order our meal and drink (really). She arrived first so she already had her food. She ordered the a burger and fries and I ordered the mussels, fries and margarita. I ate a few bites and asked a waiter for a to-go container. It was the most mediocre meal I ever had. It was not worth the calories. I went home and ended up putting everything in the trash. The basement of The Brewer's Art is one of my favorite places to have a drink with friends. Every time I'm there I end up talking with a stranger and it's not weird. I love the cozy, cave-like feel and the neighborhood feel too. The food is also great, though it's more of a drinking and socializing place for me than a place for dinner. Usually I'll just get some fries at the bar, but the few times I got an actual dinner it didn't disappoint. We drank upstairs on the couches, super relaxing. I was really impressed with the beer list that ranges from $2-10+. We also got two cocktails which were good but next time I'll just drink beer. The Brewer's Art is a Baltimore staple, and a classic. It has two levels, and an environment for everyone: a great, speak-easy style bar (downstairs); an excellent restaurant (upstairs at the back); even a well-lit bar-restaurant area & lounge (upstairs front entrance). The front bar and the downstairs bar have very different atmospheres but they complement each other well. The downstairs bar can get crowded and loud, which can impair conversation and makes it hard to meet new people. The upstairs bar is bright, spacious and a bit quieter; while I tend to prefer this, they usually shut this area down around midnight so if you're here late, the downstairs bar will be your only option. There is no doubt in my mind that the best things about Brewer's Art are the restaurant and the beer. While the bar plates are good, the restaurant menu arguably consists of some of the best food in Baltimore; and while the cocktails are also decent, BA is definitely a brewery at heart. A tale of 3 vibes; its "bar cuisine"; a full-service restaurant; and its unique, interesting brews... How late this place is open every night (1:45AM) despite it NOT being in a very commercial area should stand out and help confirm/validate its solid popularity. While there are other venues in walking distance from Brewer's Art, it is a far, far cry from the ease of access found in other bars when compared to the Inner Harbor, Fells Pt., Federal Hill, etc... yet, whenever we go, it livens up as the hours grow later. Vibe 1: The upstairs. bar area. This area is open first and has a nice high table & bar area as soon as you walk in the non-descript building, that looks more like a city bank building or apartment residence than a bar. The bar itselt is perpendicular to the window facing the street, and by day, the large window provides much natural light to fill this area. Odd paintings, some may consider creepy, adorn this area-- but I like the ambiguous oddities of those paintings. The full menu is offered here and the vibe is casual, even though the "bar cuisine" resembles a higher-priced, nouveau restaurant fare with yummy aligot potato pierogies made with "Oxtail ragu, grilled pickled onions, horseradish crème fraîche"-- yep, that is just one such appetizer that separates this bar from others. The braised lamb trangioli pasta is another solid choice that I enjoyed as a contrast to bar fare such as fries, pretzels, dips, etc...but wait! They have those items too (very crispy hand-cut garlic fries!), all made with the same attention to detail, and fine dining as the pierogie and pasta items i listed above. The meat and/or cheeseboard is very satisfying with ample choices for those interested in charcuterie. Vibe 2 : The upstairs, restaurant area Arguably you could break this area into 2 of its own but really, it is a fusion of the bar area by the window and the white-table cloth area of the dining room. Across a large wooden fireplace are sofas and standard small tables that, like the entrance bar, serve the full menu but have more of a "bar setting"-- though this area is morphing more into the dining room with its warm lighting and light colored walls. Beyond this area in a dark wood, darker colored walls area is the formal dining room. White table cloths and low lighting radiate a romantic and intimate, true-fine-dining restaurant atmosphere. It feels more appropriate to order the pan seared scallops with "vanilla Scented Squash Purée, Endive Salad, Wild Mushrooms, Roe" here than at the bar, but we have :) The lamb shank is well prepared and worth having. Vibe 3: The basement, the classic dive bar--soooo good. From the in-transition" room of the upstairs, you will find a staircase to the downstairs that usually opens later than the upstairs (around 1-2 hours, I think, depending on the crowd, the day, the ???) The music is louder here, the lighting dimmer, the ceiling much lower when compared to the upstairs. The tables leading up to the bar are off to the sides and include 2-3 isolated rooms along the sides that have a speakeasy appearance to give a fun yet clandestine feel. The bar is V-shaped and the walls brick. The only natural light are the small basement-sized windows above the bar, at street level. The bar overall has a red-lit look that makes it resemble that "dive" or "cave" type bar, that well, I love. You can also enter this area directly from the street by walking downstairs to the right (I think) of the entrance. It is now that I will get to the Brewer's Art beers (and it's about time, right?!)-- Their own creations are on tap w/ other brands in bottles, etc... Being an IPA fan, one who has read my work would think I would be disappointed in the lack of true IPAs on the menu, but I am not-- not after tasting their offerings. [it should be noted that ONCE, a couple months ago, for the first time in years, I saw on their and ordered a true IPA and loved it-- a week or 2 later, it was gone, and I have not seen it since :( why remove it??!?! ] Not to worry, the other beers are so good, it ALMOST makes the lack of an IPA alright. Note: Overall the beers have that Belgian influence. The Resurrection is the malty, dubbel that you will find all over Baltimore and beyond and with good reason. It is smooth and good for almost any occasion despite its full body, heavy appearance. Lighter and smoother is the Proletary as a dark ale, though I prefer the Resurrection because of its multi-hop and multi-malt rich flavor. As a nice contrast to the Resurrection is the copper-colored Petroleuse with an overall sweeter air, but with a more hop bitter finish. (wow, do I wish it were happy hour...) Went here for my birthday dinner with my bae. Upon entry it was warm and very lively. I loved the main dining room and the old world feel. Reminded me of Europe. Our appetizers were excellent; we had the duck scotch egg which was so divine we had to order a second one. We also had the mussels which were great. For dinner, we both ordered the steak frites. I would've given a five star except for the fact that I asked for medium well but it was served quite rare which I'm not a huge fan of. I didn't want to send it back so I ate the exterior and took the leftover home and threw it on the grill. Still tasty All in all a great experience and a fantastic birthday dinner. read more

The Brewer's Art was a refreshing escape with excellent service, yummy food, and an atmosphere unique the authenticity of the building. Our server brought us the remainder of a granache on the house when he realized it was last bottle. What a nice treat followed by an excellent wine recommendation - which I'm embarrassed I can't remember the name of, but it did have a houndstooth pattern on the label. Being that we like to take our server's recommendations, we order the indecision plate with some of the most mouthwatering cheeses and meats I've ever tasted - particularly the horseradish cheddar - delish! The potato appetizer was on point. For entrees, My two friends and I enjoyed the steak over the rosemary fries and my husband ate the pork belly. We both found ourselves reminding each other to slow down, the food was just so good. For dessert, we tried the carrot cake, bombe, and a delicious peanut butter treat. The bombe was a perfect combination of sweet and tart - the Nutella matching the tart little cherries on the plate. Thank you, Brewer's Art, for not disappointing. Both have wonderful beer selection (shout out to their own brews, fave is Resurrection), wonderful food, and great, unpretentious service. - Upstairs: top ingredients in every dish, creative twist on traditional dishes, beautiful plating that tastes even better than it looks, and full-on flavor to enhance the natural goodness of the food. - Downstairs: Fun and divey, it's dark and basementy but clean. Chili Glazed Pork Belly - 5/5 - perfect layer of fat on top of the pork which kind of shredded well when you cut into it. Smoked, roasted, and pickled beets on the side amongst other beet puree and sauces. The smoked beets were awesome with the pork. Brought out the bacon/bbq flavor of the dish. The other beets were a great cut to the richness of the pork. Duck Confit - 5/5 - they know how to cook duck! Fat layer rendered very nicely, which stuck to the dynamite crispy skin, which was a good contrast. The meat was tender. It had the purplish hue that tells you the duck is cooked a perfect medium. Service - 5/5 - ate at the downstairs bar. Guys behind the bar were attentive and friendly. read more

I went here with my boyfriend and our friend for dinner. They tried some of the house made beers and I may enjoyed the food. We ordered the fries, the crab and leek dip, and the scotch egg. I liked all the starters and thought they were delicious. The presentations of the dishes were also really nice. The entrees were really pricey for a gastropub and we weren't ready to spend that much so we just decided to keep with the starters. Overall I really enjoyed this place and the restaurant is beautiful. read more

Really sad to have to add Brewer's Art to my list of places to avoid until COVID is over, apparently. Their current deal is 'wait on yourself' 100%. So if you are wearing heels, you are expected to ferry your own food and drinks from upstairs to downstairs, through a heavy door that closes on a tight spring, out to the sidewalk - all while wearing a mask. Forget it. I don't do this for fun. Then, to add insult to injury, the person delivering your food outside will come out the door and 'call' you, but won't walk the extra 10 steps to your table. Ten steps. Again, you have to get up from your seat, and walk over to where she is standing. Are you kidding me? We had to go inside twice while eating to ask for utensils and condiments because there is just no service whatsoever. Why go out? It doesn't have to be this way. This is an extreme interpretation of COVID. See exhibit one: Tapas Teatro, where the customer and worker fortunately have not switched roles. read more

The place is an old house with history, very nice place. I liked the decoration and the place, but the food was awful, first of all the server did recommend the soup that was served cold with terrible taste and looked they brought someone else soup for me who couldn't eat it, I just touched it with the spoon and was uneatable, I told the server but was charged $10 for it? then we had so called Cheeseburgers, the worst I ever had, we asked for well done, and some parts were burnt and the other parts totally raw meat, and we had stomach pain after. My daughter ordered the fish, that was also terrible - $32 fish??? The place was packed, but I think people they drink too much that can't taste the food anymore.
