I was on campus wondering what I'd do for lunch. Up on my twitter feed pops up The Cheesy Chick announcing their location for the day... at a business park in Amherst! Since it was so close to campus I rushed over in between classes to try some cheesy goodness. There was already a line formed with some people waiting to order. I'm glad I got there when I did because the special sandwiches went really fast. Everything sounded good (come on- grilled cheese is the best) but I settled on trying one of their special sandwiches, I got the 'Wild Thing'. This sandwich was havarti and swiss cheese with sliced turkey and homemade coleslaw on rye bread. It was so much better than my expectations. Awesome! The turkey was of very high quality (something I always notice) and the cheese was oh so melty and good. The coleslaw was outta this world. Nice and tangy with golden raisins it imparted some sweetness on the sandwich. Mmmm. I ate in my car any my only regret about making a trip to the truck for lunch was not grabbing napkins. I was a picky eater as a kid. I am still kinda picky. For years I would only get grilled cheese when my family and I would go out. Fast forward to today; I am vegan, and haven't had grilled cheese in years. That is until today. I saw awhile back how The Cheesy Chick introduced a vegan menu. I have never tried their food truck, but I love this little cafe. We went during COVID, so the small indoor seating may turn off some- though take out is available. My family and another one were sitting inside, at separate tables. The owner was working at the time, and was efficient in taking orders, keeping the tables sanitized, and dishing out warm food. The menu has a great variety for omnivores and plant based foodies alike. The prices aren't overcharged for the vegan options, which can be the case with some restaurants. I got just the basic (v) grilled cheese, and my parent's got (v) bacon and buffalo chicken mac & cheeses. There was also a summer salad special my dad got, and since it was the 'Virtual Taste of Buffalo Weekend', desserts included the grilled pb&j, and apple cinnamon pierogis. Everybody enjoyed their 'cheesy' goodness, even my parent's who do not typically eat vegan cheese. The dessert portions were perfect to finish up the meal. My only issue is with the vegan meat. I am grateful that it is even an option, however, the seitan 'meat' is the same for everything. While the owner did indicate this to us prior to ordering, my mom did not really like the 'bacon', while my dad enjoyed it as 'buffalo chicken' in his mac. I would love to see some improvement in this area. Nevertheless, this cozy cafe is sure to satisfy your comfort cravings. We started to look at the menu above the ordering window when the nice lady let us know we were welcome to sit and she would bring us menus, which she did right away. I wanted breakfast so I ordered a build your own sandwich. It was made and brought to us quickly. It tasted truly "home style" - no "fast food bulk substitutes"! There were a few other groups of people sitting and eating. It isn't a very large place, but no one was in each others way and it's very cutely designed. I want to love Cheesy Chick, don't get me wrong. Grilled cheese was always the pinnacle meal of my childhood, and I adore the fact that they've got so many cool flavor combinations that only make the classic grilled cheese sandwich that much better. For the prices, however, I'm not really sure if it's totally worth it. The sandwiches I've had in the past were pretty good, but I wouldn't exactly call them fantastic. I tried their "Grilled Cheesus" at Taste of Buffalo this past year, and I got to fulfill my dream of trying a grilled macaroni & cheese sandwich, but I'm sort of disappointed that I haven't been able to catch that on their menu at all since I've passed by a couple of times at Larkin on Tuesdays. We like to go early on Food Truck Tuesdays and try to beat the crowds, and usually some of the trucks are open early and start serving before 5 o'clock. Thinking they were open since they had posted their menu and opened the window, we found out that they weren't going to be serving until five. The way my friend and I had been turned away made us easily take our business elsewhere. The workers looked like they would have just been standing around and talking for a half an hour otherwise, so I didn't really understand why they wouldn't want to start selling their product while there's dozens of other trucks also competing for their business around them. We did end up coming back later, but only because I was still in the mood for a sandwich. Just this past Tuesday I decided that I did want to explore the menu a little bit more, so my friend and I both ordered the Pesto, which included tomato, mozzarella, and some other herbs that have escaped my memory. It came with chips on the side. It sort of felt like all of the ingredients were simply jammed into a sandwich; it tasted pretty good after the first few bites, but it wasn't as satisfying as the food I've had from other trucks. More often than not, I'd probably choose other food trucks over this one. I think Cheesy Chick would benefit from a little grilled cheese competition from a newer, potentially better truck. read more

Okay I want to write an honest review. I wish I could give 0 stars. The inside is super cute and the people were nice. I'm a vegan so naturally I ordered the vegan options. Me and my good friend decided to dine in, and the food came out super fast. The vegan philly Mac and cheese was super cold, flavorless and just all around horrid lol. No cooked peppers and onions no seasonings just raw veggies and cold Mac and cheese. no "philly" sauce, and the meat replacement was thick bland and repulsive. The vegan buffalo chicken wrap again, bland and completely disappointing like they didn't even try. My stomach hurts every time I think of what I just ate....The pickle and chips were the highlight of this sad meal. Never ever eat here if you're vegan. PLEASE save your money. read more

I tried out Cheesy Chick because I know people who rave about it. I was, however, rather disappointed. I was not very hungry, so I decided to split a grilled cheese sandwich with someone else. It was nice to see they had gluten free bread, so I ordered an apple/bacon/cheese sandwich on gluten free bread. Pros: *The grilled cheese sandwich was pretty decent. *Gluten conscious - they did inform me of possible cross contamination. Cons: (Unfortunately, a lot more than the pros) *Line was not long but service was very slow. The guy taking orders got at least two other orders ahead of us wrong, and then forgot part of our order as well. *The sandwich on gluten free bread was very, very small (I would estimate the size of just the palm of your hand.) *We ordered an apple/bacon/cheese sandwich, but there was only one very small slice of apple on one side of the sandwich, so one of us didn't even get any apple since we were sharing. *We were told they didn't have any knives so we couldn't cut the sandwich in half... *Overpriced. I've had food from this truck in the past, and it wasn't the greatest. I usually pick up some grilled cheese when I'm at a Canalside event.. Because who could go wrong with grilled cheese? The food has always been mediocre at best. Nothing really "wows" me about the sandwiches from this truck. However, I tried the "Cheesus" today (grilled cheese with mac & cheese inside) and it was quite good! It seems like they've done away with the Wonderbread of the past and started using real sourdough. The sandwich was tasty and was a lot of food for my money. I have ordered from the Cheesy Chick 3 times and each time has been a little different of an experience. The first time, I did not pay. I split a buffalo chicken with a friend of mine and that started my love for this truck. It was delicious and there was plenty of chicken and cheese on the sandwich. She must have ordered a combo because I remember it coming with potato chips. The second time I was with my boyfriend, the truck was near his work. I ordered a sandwich which was much like a turkey bacon club. It was okay, but I really missed the buffalo chicken that I had the first time. The last time I ate here, I ordered a buffalo chicken combo with mac and cheese and a drink. My sandwich was so hot and melty that I burned my mouth trying to eat it before it cooled. That is not a complaint at all, when I order hot food, I expect it to be hot and this did not disappoint!! What did disappoint however, was the mac and cheese. It was oily and didn't really taste like anything. The cheese in it was mostly hard and it seemed reheated. I will not order it again. And the prices, they are high for what you get. It's an average of $8 a sandwich and they aren't very big. Knowing I can get a sub sandwich for the same price is what keeps me from hunting this truck down on the daily, because I dream about those buffalo chicken sammies. After waiting 45 minutes for a grilled cheese with provolone, bacon and tomato on wheat I inquired about the status of my sandwich and was told it was coming right up. I asked, probably not very happily, "two minutes or ten?" and was gruffed at by the staff and that it would be right up and that things come out of the truck out of order because faster things first or something like that. Thirty seconds later my sandwich was placed in the window and my money was there to be refunded to me. I did not take the cash but took the sandwich but when I realized that the cheese wasn't even melted, I asked for the money back and left the sandwich. Was the truck busy, no busier than I have seen the BMFT or LLoyd's or Frank on Elmwood or Court., so should it have taken 45 minutes to make a non-melted grilled cheese sandwich? No it shouldn't have but more importantly than that, should you be mad at me because I asked about the status of my sandwich? Big NO on that question. The way my lunch experience went today was that someone without any real food experience thought that owning a food truck would be fun. But working on the line whether it is at the white linen place or the fast food grill is hard and requires training and preparation. It requires multi-tasking. Being in the weeds is part of the business and at the end of the day you just can't let it ruffle your feathers. OK, so I don't know how the food is but I do know that the folks in the truck need a lesson in not making one sandwich at a time. read more

Unfortunately, the Cheesy Chick seems like a business that's taking advantage of consumers by charging premium prices for convenience and sub-par food. Long-story-short, I was with my girlfriend when she attempted to order an ABC at last night's canal concert. They ran out of apples. Ok.....back-up plan.....order American Grilled Cheese. The description for this item on their truck is very confusing. It makes it sound like you're getting multiple meats on one grilled cheese. You're actually only getting 1 meat. We paid $6 for two slices of bacon between two store-bought slices of Texas toast and a slice of processed cheese. So yep....we paid $6 for something that's un-innovative and mediocre in quality. There's no imagination and no premium-ness here. My advice to them?....go on Pinterest to find some unique recipes that make me want to come out to your truck. If you offer menu items that I can easily make at home, there's absolutely no reason for me to buy into your business. This review is not just about 1 sandwich, but about all of the mediocre sandwiches I saw leaving the truck. I'm sorry but this is one food truck that needs to drive right out of Buffalo. read more

We tried them down at some kite festival thing going on last Friday at the newly designated Buffalo Harbor State park. There was only a four trucks, Roaming Buffalo, Fally Mac, Cheesy Chick and some other desert truck. My wife never had the WTF from Roaming but the line was way deep, so while she waited there I figured I grab some grilled cheese for the kids to hold their complaining off. Now their stuff is kind of pricey at $6 for a grilled cheese with one meat. I got no meat so it was $5. Wanted a nutella and banana which is $3.50, they were out of banana, so I just got it with plain nutella. Both came out quick but were just kind of weak sauce. Average size, processed cheese and bread.... I actually make a better one at home easier. Ultimately just not worth the price. Would have much rather traded both those in for another WTF from roaming which is only $7. Ultimately I agree with the last review before this one, Andrew Z. it's over priced mediocrity. Done. I feel bad for these guys but if you're going to run a food truck, which already is stigmatic for some people, don't run it half-assed, full ass it! Tried to order a Philly and they were out (private event and I was there in the first hour of 4, and it's dead because of the weather). So I went with the classic grilled cheese (with bacon) and a side of mac-n-cheese. Toast was inconsistent, almost burnt on one side (not bad though) and not close to crispy on the other. The bacon went straight into the garbage, it was cold, rubbery and looked mostly uncooked. The Mac and cheese was rigatoni shells (and some random mac noodles) with some cheese on it. No flavor. Some noodles were hard. So weird, like it was leftovers mixed together. Ugh, no...not eating this again, even if it's free. I remember high school food being better than this. read more

(small italian bread slices etc)..I looked at it and laughed...like...that's it? I was still hungry after eating it. Perhaps splurging on a larger sized sliced bread in future? Don't be fooled by the reviews and photos from months ago. Something changed and the sandwiches are half the size and no where near the quality. I ordered an Apple Bacon Cheddar grilled cheese and it was so small/thin. It had 2 bacon slices, a few slices of apples and only 2 slices of processed cheddar cheese on it which is equivalent to Kraft slices and it was $8! I wish I would have taken a picture of it but hindsight is 20/20. Ordered a side of Mac and cheese and it had no flavor. It was luke warm so the sprinkled cheese on top didn't even melt. Adventures with the boy part two...hunted down the Cheesy Chick to celebrate successful last day of Middle School, I have created a monster! I think it is the whole concept of tracking and hunting the trucks for food that he loves. He made his own combo (white bread, American, bacon) I had the ABC (apple, bacon, cheddar--delish) then we split the special (gouda, bacon, rye--clear winner). I love the concept of this truck--they obviously use quality ingredients and while 5.50 for a grilled cheese is a little steep I didn't get indigestion from it or anything...I would go back or seek them out if I was in the area, but not another special trip. Really disappointed in this food truck. I've heard really good things but when I tried it the sandwich tasted like it had been sitting under a warmer for hours. It was luke warm and greasy. The owner messaged me and offered a refund and wanted to know details about when and what I had purchased. You have to respect owners that strive to improve their business. I enjoy the whole concept of this truck tremendously. It's sloppy, greasy comfort food that's not just the same old thing you can get in any restaurant in town. During its first week rolling through Buffalo, the wait wasn't too extensive, and I found the food to be outstanding. Specifically I tried the "wild thing", which consists of Havarti and Swiss with turkey, grilled on rye bread, topped with a cole slaw that I couldn't believe was homemade. It was absolutely delicious - creamy & tangy, with the addition of yellow raisins and mustard to give it a sweet and spicy kick. There are three more specialty grilled cheeses, all of which look great, and you can, of course, assemble your own from a wide list of possible ingredients. Also, it's the first Buffalo food truck to feature Nutella in any way - here, on a grilled panini. That's a win anyway you slice it. read more

I have grilled cheese to thank for the fact that I am still alive. You see, from about age 2 until about age 12, I ate almost nothing but grilled cheese sandwiches. My grandmother made them perfectly, with buttered bread studded with sunflower seeds, thick slices of bright-orange cheese, huge amounts of love, and a dill pickle on the side. It was tough to convince me that anything else could be better. At the pinnacle of my picky eating phase, I even got her to smuggle one into a Chinese restaurant for me in her purse. My far more open-minded parents tried to talk me out of it ("oh honey, you don't know what you're missing!"). But there was no coming between me, my grandma, and our grilled cheese. Eventually, something broke the spell, and I began to eat everything under the sun, from pork belly to spicy tofu. But I still think that a simple grilled cheese is one of the most perfect meals on Earth. No single 'wich can live up to a grandma sandwich, thus it wouldn't even be fair to compare. But I mention them now, because the Cheesy Chick's classic sammy comes kinda close. On my first visit, they, too, tried to get me to try something else on the menu -- Why not the goat cheese? How about some soup? -- but my inner five-year-old and I wanted the real deal. The bread's just substantial enough (but still crispy), their cheese is just oozy enough, and the butteriness quotient is just indulgent enough to trip the right happiness triggers in my cerebral cortex. Nice work, Cheesy Chick. I'll try to explore the far reaches of your menu next time ... but don't judge me if I come back for the plain ol' cheese. It just does it for me. read more

Just got back from trackin' down The Cheesy Chick. Today, they were out at 25 Northpointe in Amherst. Everything was absolutely delicious and extremely satisfying. We couldn't decide what to order so we basically ordered everything. haha I had the tomato basil soup (tangy and creamy, with parmesan cheese sprinkled on top), The ABC (apple, bacon, cheddar with onion mayo on italian bread), cannoli dip, and half a Nutella panini with Banana. I'm stuffed. I declared today my "last meal" before starting my next round of Tough Mudder training (woot woot!) and I'm so happy I got to squeeze in The Cheesy Chick before strapping on the blinders and buckling down! The hubs had the soup, The Lucky 7 (7 italian meats and cheeses chopped/blended into a creamy spread type thing, on italian bread--it was not what I was expecting, but I tasted a bite or two and it was nothing short of delicious), cannoli dip, and the other half of Nutella panini with Banana. The sandwiches were so good...they exceeded my expectations in every way. The only issue I had was that I wish the sandwiches were bigger--but as another Yelper explains, thats the nature of the french bread beast. ohwell. just order two next time ;) I am actually a bit of a cannoli connoisseur...and the cannoli dip was pretty darn good! I only wished the cheesy base was a little sweeter though, because once I ran out of chocolate chips the dip was a little plain. It didn't stop me from using my finger to swipe the inside of the container when I was done though. And the graham crackers were a perfect dunker. The Nutella panini is a great idea....and why on earth haven't I thought this creation up on my own?? I'm totally into this whole food truck movement. I encountered this truck at the final Food Truck Tuesday of the season at Larkin Square. There was no line, and I was hankering for something hot and cheesy (the weather was the pits) and I'd already tried Macarollin' on a previous visit, so I figured why not? I got a Buffalo chicken grilled cheese and it was delicious. The whole thing was nice and piping hot, and the chicken had a good taste of buffalo sauce but not too overpowering. The bread was nice and crisp and buttery. They also had dog biscuits available, and I got some for my dog, who loved them. For the rest of the past week, I'd get occasional whiffs of them from the package, which instilled a subsequent craving for more grilled cheese. :D read more

The idea is fantastic - grilled cheese on the go! The sandwiches are a solid 3.5 stars but the delivery and smiles are definitely a 4. The size of your sandwich relies on the bread type you request. If you make your own grilled cheese combo the biggest slice is the regular bread or wheat bread. I ordered the "Three Billy Goats Stuff" (artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes with goat cheese) and the french bread slices were on the skinny side by nature of the fact that french bread loaves are skinny. I wonder if the book "french women don't get fat" really explains that the key to being skinny is to eat smaller slices of bread. ;) They were taking cash only at the time of this review. read more
