Today my friend noticed that when meals are put up to be served the servers are actually pulling their mask down and talking in front of the food. My first time at the classic café I was blown away! Their grits are the best I've had many places including most places in the south. The service is always good efficient and friendly. Parking out front on the street is free for an hour which is plenty of time. Side street parking and around the block is also fine and very safe. I live three blocks away so this is my go to place for breakfast. I was disappointed two days ago when I ordered the grits and it appeared that they had been reheated or sat around for a while under a heater. All that considered it still a good value for the money. I was expecting your standard cafe serving (I haven't had much experience with diner styles places) and so we ordered the eggs benny, kitchen sink omelette and a short stack between the two of us. And the short stack, while short, is still a huge serving that would have sufficed for a breakfast meal. Overall the food was good, the eggs benny was a little too well well-done; yolk wasn't running, and the hollandaise wasn't as tangy as I usually expect it to be. And the pancakes, while large, weren't mind-blowing. It's a great experience overall, great service and really casual environment. In town for Phish. Found this place on Yelp and walked over. Service was great, very friendly. The food was perfect and exactly what we wanted and needed the morning after a show. Yes, it's diner breakfast food and it was delicious: the eggs, French toast, bacon, potatoes, toast, coffee, everything. They also have a pretty thorough gluten free menu too evidently (see the pic) although I did not partake. I wanted to go back Sunday morning but time didn't allow. I was really hoping to be blown away by The Classic Cafe. It is an adorable, old-school diner with a homey, laid-back ambiance. Parking isn't the worst since there are some street-parking stalls along Winter Street. Inside, there are a number of booths and some seats at the counter. They have a lot of different breakfast options including all of the normal things (eggs, meat, potatoes), sweet treats (pancakes, french toast, etc.), and some omelets with great names. I'm a sucker for country fried steak, so I stuck with that, over easy eggs, hash browns, and sourdough toast. First off, the steak was missing one of the most important ingredients: the gravy. Maybe it's because I got take-out, but a country fried steak without gravy is just a slab of sadness! The eggs were nicely cooked, the hash browns? Disappointing. They weren't exactly crispy but they weren't soggy either. They had an oily/burnt taste that only a heaping scoop of ketchup could mask. I truly wish that I had had a better experience here... but with its close vicinity to a number of other amazing, trendy eateries (Kitchen, The Grange, Bayberry Beer Hall, The Slow Rhode, etc.), I'm afraid I probably won't be revisiting The Classic Cafe in the near future. read more

Usually when I eat breakfast I don't eat the bread first but once I took a bite into my english muffin I knew it was going to be very good. I ordered the 'Everything But The Kitchen Sink' omelette, which was very tasty. It had bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, ham, sausage, etc. it came with a side of hash browns that were nice and crispy. I like the fact that the kitchen is open so theres nothing to hide. The restaurant has a classic diner look/feel to it. I used to eat here all the time and I think I finally had one too many undercooked pancakes and wildly inconsistent orders of bacon and it just broke me. They do offer generous portion sizes, but I'd gladly have smaller portions to have the food cooked well. The service here has always been awesome, so they get a star for that. Stopped by on a Sunday with my friends. Line was not too long and were seated pretty promptly. I ordered the Sampler which is 4 eggs, 4 pieces of bacon, 4 sausage, toast, 2 potato choices, pancakes and biscuits and gravy all for $20. It was awesome especially for the price. I was starving and can eat a lot and I still was barely able to finish it all, I could easily see it serving 2-3 people. All the food was good too, the biscuits and gravy was really good as were the home fries and potato cakes. Our latest goal is to venture to the West Side more often...and we heard this is a great breakfast option so off we went on a random cold morning. We found street parking nearby and walked into a really large space which it didn't seem like from the outside. It had some traditional diner flare along with what appeared to be some Providence relics. We were told to sit anywhere we want which I always appreciate. Our server was really sweet and rolled with my constant mind hanging when she took my order. I got an omelette and my other half got the corned beef hash. Our food was great...traditional diner style. My grits were different than other places perhaps bc the grain used was different and more textured - I enjoyed it! We did say we walked away feeling like it was a lot of potato/starch on the plate but nothing that would keep us from coming back. This place just continuously goes downhill year after year. I'm very surprised that there is only one dollar sign indicating this is a fair price please. Expect to pay $35-$40 for two people. The home fries every single time are burned and soft with no flavor, the only good thing on the menu is the biscuits and gravy. They don't know how to cook eggs individually and serve them nicely they dump them into a form, and to me it's just not the same. If you happen to get seated in the back half of the restaurant you will just be subjected to loud and sometimes unsightly prep work. If that doesn't ruin your appetite, Believe me the home fries will. They carry generic quality tomato ketchup to ruin the meal just a little bit more at a savings of one penny per plate I would say! read more

The husband and I were doing some deep research into the neighborhoods of Providence. We'd not been to PVD (as the kids call it) in a while, but it was, at one point, our old stomping grounds. A full-on diner, with both happy staff and patrons milling and chatting about. It almost felt like a movie set. ("More coffee, Merv?" a waitress asked a patron sitting at the bar. You get the idea.) "I love milling and chatting about," I thought to myself. We were seated in the back and prompted greeted by one of the friendliest waitresses I've encountered in easily a year. And, of course, I forgot to write her name down. Ugh. But she was awesome. Eager to please, fun, friendly, and fast. Really, the whole staff seemed genuinely nice. It was great. We (my husband and I) both ordered a ton of stuff, however I was careful to save room for the oft talked about French Toast. It was all about the French Toast. It had received glowing reviews on more than a few social media channels, and I'm a French Toast fiend. Not only that, but TCC even offers "quantities of French Toast" half-orders, full-orders, combo-orders, the whole gamut. They're proud purveyors of French Toast and they definitely want the world to enjoy it. Things looked pretty good on my plate when it all arrived. The turkey bacon was very good, as were the home fries. Saving (what I thought was) the best for last, I dove into the French Toast... and, well, it just wasn't good. Like, a little cold and mushy in the middle, and a little tasteless and soggy everywhere else. Not sure what happened, but my expectations were dashed. Dashed, I say! Is it brutal of me to give a 3-star review over French Toast when the service and sides were so good? Well, yes. I wish I had discovered Classic Cafe when I was living in Providence. I was walking around Federal Hill, and looking for a decent breakfast place when Classic popped up, a little out of the way, up on Westminster Street. There isn't a whole lot around the diner, but it is definitely worth the trip. The decor is straightforward; lots of tables, a counter where you can watch the cooks go to town on home fries, menus covered in plastic. There are lots of menu options, a couple specials, and lots of American breakfast and lunch staples. The food is absolutely delicious. I ordered a special, a turkey omelet stuffed with sage stuffing and cranberry sauce and cheese. Unbelievable. I feel like they could have picked the easy battle and just stuffed it with turkey and cheese, but the sage and additional seasoning made me sad to finish my omelet . I also chose a potato pancake as a side, which was similarly delicious, but not in a so-greasy-it-has-to-be-good sort of way. Prices were reasonable. I paid about $12 for my meal, coffee, and tip. Came today for brunch after finding it on yelp. I came early so it was half empty and I sat at the bar. The menu consisted of basic diner fare with a few interesting twists. I had the pancakes (short stack as the waitress recommended) which were pretty standard fare--nothing special--and were huge to the point I had trouble finish the 2 cakes. I also had a side of grits with cheese on top (I held the bacon) and the grits were a bit too creamy for my taste, but were pretty good for being in RI. Service was friendly and efficient.
