There was not a SINGLE thing I disliked about the Classic Cafe. My partner and I came in a little after 12 pm on a Sunday morning and waited no more than 5 minutes for a table despite the place being relatively busy. Our waitress was kind and accommodating which is always a plus. The wait for our food was a little longer than expected but man oh man it was worth it. Our plates were huge. I mean, amazing portions for the price. I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with Potato Cakes and Over Medium eggs while my love opted for the Huevos Rancheros. Really good diner coffee. I ordered the veggie sandwich on rye with a side of potato pancakes. The potato pancakes were the star of the show. Loved them. They were like little fried mashed potato patties. Delicious. The sandwich was a little bland and I think they forgot the cheese on one side, but the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I'll definitely come back to try the blueberry pancakes. I didn't like the fact that the waitress dropped off our check while we were still eating without asking if we needed anything else but otherwise the service was friendly and attentive. I've driven by this place so many times and it never occurred to me to stop and eat here. Based on the name and location, I always assumed it was a small cafe with just coffee and bagels. Now I think you've been in one too many movies and you're more a stop on the "PVD places that have been in a movie...you, know that one with that guy..." Your home fries used to have their own food group....they used to have a little pep. Now they're just red and I find myself thinking "what herb or spice makes something so red yet adds so little flavor" Your eggs...that's right a diner whose grill master delivers time and time again eggs that are supposed to be over medium but apparently have been "fried" over a medium wattage light bulb. Uncooked and inedible. I'm sorry Classic, your super fast and super friendly service will not make up for charging me $13 for an omelette that tastes like a warm whisked egg and very little else. GOOD NEWS! Providence is home to this place that takes in young whipper snappers and 4 years later voilà! Chef! Good ones. And I'm certain that one of those graduates loved to cook brunch and could restore you to your former glory as the quintessential greasy spoon diner. Excellent place for brunch. The 4 of us went on a Saturday noon time for brunch, and I was very pleased in all regards. Summary: Excellent overall place. The food quality was superb while the prices are below average. This makes the place an overall awesome deal. The service was average. I would say this price is about average. HOWEVER, there is a yelp deal to spend $20 to get a $40 voucher. This in effect made our bill $30 (we tipped off of the original amount). Now, $30, including tax and tip, for 5 dishes between 4 people is truly noteworthy. Overall, price is 10/10. Service: I would say the service is average. Nothing bad, but nothing exceptional either. In my rating system, services carries the least amount of weight, as long as it is decent. They were pretty much at capacity the entire time we were there. Yet, the wait was never more than 5 minutes for any of the people wanting a table. This is actually very good for a high quality food brunch place. The waitress herself did a fine job. No issues. Overall, service is 7.5/10. For an overall rating of the entire restaurant, I would give it a 9.5/10. The service was fine. We didn't have any issues, and all our requests were met. What makes this place a true gem is the quality of food you get for the price. I cannot stress this enough. The food is much better than average, yet the price was below average in the brunch category. In addition, there was hardly a wait. This is unique when it comes to going to a brunch restaurant at noon on a weekend. Most of the popular restaurants in cities have a 20-40 min wait. The Classic Cafe has some stiff competition, being that the West Side has my current top 3 breakfast or brunch places in Providence right now (Kitchen, Nick's, Julian's). But the word's out on my top 3, the lines are growing, and my inner hungry brunchy monster starts roaring when there's more than a 5 minute wait, so I headed over to the Classic Cafe after a long hiatus. Glad I stopped by, the restaurant was cleaner than I remembered (no more sticky unknowns on the retro vinyl seats) and my friend and I were immediately seated. Once our orders were put through, it wasn't longer than about 3 minutes before the food came out piping hot and ready to be demolished. My smaller side one egg omelet was fluffy and not greasy, the side of sausage was generously portioned with 4 links. My friend's pumpkin pancake tasted like mix, but it too was large and satisfying. The service was extremely prompt, friendly, and competent. The only negative for me was the coffee which was expensive ($2.29 for a single small mug of coffee. They charge refill pricing even if they only get one mug) and tasted like stale grinds and cigarette butts. Overall, Classic is nowhere near budging my top 3, but it's still a decent option on the West Side for relatively inexpensive traditional American diner breakfast/brunch without the long wait times. read more

So I think part of why my experience was kind of OK, was my company. Got breakfast with a housemate when we were the only people up in the house the other day at an unholy time to be up on a Sunday. Housemate happens to be a server....at probably the nicest place in the whole city. So basically the whole time there was a lot of the housemate challenging and critiquing the hipster girl serving us and I in turn felt increasingly uncomfortable. I like that they had explanations of their eggs, and what each potato offering was. Glad to get my over medium eggs and home fries, instead of being presented with runny whites and yolks or fried shredded potatoes that I don't actually care for. Franks red hot is their hot sauce of choice, which is fine with me. The coffee is coffee...and quiet frankly I wish they would have a better cup, but it was bottomless. Chicken fried steak was flavorful and expertly prepared along with the savory homemade sausage gravy. (was that thyme or sage in there?) The potatoe cakes were garlicky, cheesy, delisiousness and oh so crispy. My husband got the hash, eggs and pancakes and was very pleased. Great service, great food, and unreal price. I was going to go to Nick's but the hubby gets pissy anytime we spend $50.00 on breakfast for 2 so in an Effort to please his wallet and my foodie appetite we ended up here and I was suprised, amazed and so happy. It's New Years day and I'm a bit hung over and starving. It was around 2:00 PM, but I was really craving some breakfast and my Yelp app listed The Classical Cafe as a suggestion. The location was on a corner of a big intersection, was nicely labeled and was very easy to find. When I entered the restaurant, there were several people standing in the doorway, making the wait look terribly long. To my surprise, the staff was very quick in clearing off tables and getting everyone seated; we ended up waiting no longer than five minutes. The place looked like a 50's diner, complete with walls decorated with 50's food & beverage ads and trinkets. I will admit, however, that the music was a little off for the vibe they were displaying. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Feel free to ask any questions because the menu is pretty large and enticing. Be sure to ask them about weekly specials and deals. The names of the dishes are hilarious and the descriptions perfectly describe them. I had the Hangover Scramble, which was fitting for my state at the time. It looked and smelled outstanding, and was extremely delicious! Scrambled eggs, bacon bits, onions and ham over hash browns (or whichever potatoes you choose) all topped with their delicious bean salsa and served with a side of toast. The dish was so large that I could barely finish it - and all for just under 10 dollars. Overall, my experience was great. I will definitely be returning to try out more of their dishes. I went here with my mother for a late breakfast. Service was fast and friendly. Wonderful ambiance with a retro feel. It was a cute little place for breakfast. Parking was easy because of the time we went but I can imagine it might be difficult during peak times. One thing I have to say right off the bat is that the tea is ridiculously overpriced. I got a lipton tea bag and hot water and it was $2.29. They offered free refills but I can't drink that much tea; definitely not worth the price. The coffee was also $2.29 but my mother had several cups, so it seemed worth it. The coffee was good, not burnt or bitter. I ordered a "build your own omelette" w/ feta, sausage, onion & mushroom. My mother had plain cheddar cheese omelette. We both got rye toast and hash browns. The hash browns were crispy and well seasoned. The rye toast was thick cut and perfectly toasted, not too much butter. Both of our omelettes were well done. The only thing I didn't really like was that the cheese in both our omelettes was cold (not melted at all). It really didn't change how awesome the food was. I so loved the Classic Cafe! I met up with 5 of my friends for Sunday brunch at like 12. We only waited about 10 minutes for a very comfortable table. Service was strong and capable. The food here is special! I had the Habaneros Ranchero... it was eggs with a mexican twist.. quesadilla instead of toast and pinto beans and salsa and a kind of sauce that was amazing.. Totally Awesome! Loved It! From what I saw at our table it looks like mostly everything has a unique signature style to it, from chips to salad it's all very special. Providence is full of hip breakfast joints, with farm fresh egg white omelets, with locally grown organic raw milk cheese that you can wash down with fair trade coffee. That's great, but sometimes you want your eggs without a side of pretentiousness, and for that Classic Cafe is a winner. The staff is friendly, the tables turn over quickly and the home fries are so good I challenge you to leave any left on your plate. Solid breakfast option within walking distance of home. It is a bit of a greasy spoon, but sometimes that's what my BF and I are looking for. Try the pumpkin pancakes -- they are like eating cake for breakfast (minus the frosting). My BF always goes for one of the monster omlettes. It can get pretty busy on a weekend day, which slows service. But the waitresses are friendly and you can tell are working hard to be as quick as they can. read more

It's a good thing, then, that I went to The Classic Café, because it was there that I was able to do just that. A place that I'd passed numerous times turned out to be a surprisingly good stop. $9.99 for Benny Florentine, which I had read other reviewers' preferences for. I was pretty satisfied, though the English was a bit soggy. Home-fries were pretty good, though they took second billing to the Benny. I think they must cook them in margarine. I was surprised that my plate came with fruit. It was seriously huge portions up in there. My boyfriend's order took the prize - chicken-fried steak covered in gravy with scrambled eggs, toast, and home-fries. I seriously ate more of his than I did of mine! So good. Neither of us finished, however. His toast sat untouched, and I only took a couple pieces out of my fruit salad. We had almost an entire order of home-fries left betwixt us. We waddled out, agreeing to split the chicken-fried plate next time. This is not the best breakfast in town, but it is solid diner fare. With two coffees, two orange juices, and our breakfasts, the total was $31. Well worth it, considering nightmare breakfasts I have had in this city that consisted of less but were more expensive. read more

The Mr. had Huevos Rancheros and coffee (he proclaimed the coffee to be good, which made me happy as a non-coffee drinker). I had corned beef hash, which I had been craving, and a large orange juice, with potato cakes. I am still searching for delicious shredded hash browns on the East Coast (perhaps Class Cafe has them - will try the hash browns next time), and -- goodness -- these potato cakes are something special. It was a lot of tuber for me, between the hash and cakes, but I ate almost all of it. My one small complaint was that I wish the waitress had checked whether I wanted a small or large OJ; I just ordered juice without seeing there were sizes and got a large. After high reviews, I had high hopes when I headed here after seeing a line out the door at Kitchen. The Cafe was busy as well as it was brunch time on a Sunday. I ended up sitting at the bar. The service was decent, but that was it. My glass of water tasted like dirty dish water. I had to do all I could not to vomit after trying it. The food was okay, nothing to write home about. My vegetarian omelette had pieces of ham in it, which is a problem when you are pork-free. The orange juice was also disgusting. It is OJ, how is that possible? I left feeling greasy. Had a Groupon so decided to check this place out. It is very deceiving on the the outside as the inside actually has a lot more tables than I would have expected. They have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu with a lot of grilled classics. We chose the tuna melt with buffalo fries and the turkey club with a side salad. The portions were huge which may explain the price, each sandwich was $11.99 which I thought was a little high but you get a lot. The tuna melt was cooked perfectly and the fries were very crispy but could have been spicier. The turkey club was your typical club but did have a significant amount of turkey. The server was great and was respectful of this being a lunch break so she came back frequently to ensure we had everything we needed. Overall, nice place to check out, you can park right in the Citizens parking lot across the street and just walk over so parking isn't a problem. This place is really awesome, I have driven by many times and never had the chance to go, while looking around for a breakfast/diner that was open on a weekend at 3pm (you would think this is not a problem, apparently on the west side it is) We were happy to find the classic cafe was open for business and I am glad they were. Eggs Benedict and eggs florentine were great, the eggs were perfectly cooked, the ham was nice cut and thick and the home fries rocked as did the signature potato pancakes. It was an abundance of food and we each could not finish our portion. The eggs Benedict could have had more hollidase sauce but the eggs florentine had plenty so I just assume either they were low and didn't have enough for both portions or the laddle pour was a bit weak on that plate. I will come here again for breakfast or lunch and look forward to explore the menu further. read more

Hash was great with chunks of thick corned beef. The gravy on the biscuits was delicious and peppery with lots of sausage in it. The biscuits were good. The home fries that came with the breakfast were great. red skinned potatoes seasoned well, tender and crispy on the edges. The sourdough bread was awesome too- huge pieces! My only complaint is that the amount of eggs we got did not seem like the "2 eggs" it came with...a strange place to skimp on at a breakfast place... Overall- great place, great food, great service. They put a spice or something in the hollandaise sauce that makes it much more interesting and tasty than the traditional version. English muffins were fried in butter - crispy and yummy! --I would go back just for this dish. Potato cakes v. hash browns v. home fries -- HOME FRIES win it! SO good! The hash browns and potato cakes were decent too, just a little greasy for my taste. Gravy & biscuits - Southern companion said the gravy was good, but the biscuits "weren't as fluffy as they'd be at home." Probably a good bet for a Northerner though. Brought my Grandma here for breakfast a couple weeks ago and it was literally STUFFED with people. I mean there was a crowd outside in the freezing cold just waiting to come in to eat here. Breakfast was good, but I don't know if it was that good to wait in the cold... I bought the YELP deal, which was amazing btw. I had the hashita (?), which was basically eggs and a whole bunch of breakfast goodness you roll into a breakfast fajita yourself.
