There was not a SINGLE thing I disliked about the Classic Cafe. My partner and I came in a little after 12 pm on a Sunday morning and waited no more than 5 minutes for a table despite the place being relatively busy. Our waitress was kind and accommodating which is always a plus. The wait for our food was a little longer than expected but man oh man it was worth it. Our plates were huge. I mean, amazing portions for the price. I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with Potato Cakes and Over Medium eggs while my love opted for the Huevos Rancheros. Biscuits melt in your mouth and the house sauce on the Huevos was so good. And when the check came I was not afraid to reach for my wallet. Everything was less than $20. I had probably the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had at this place. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese on sourdough bread and it all just went together. I don't really know how to explain it, except to say it was yummy. I will add more as I check it out another time with someone who is a little more adventurous when it comes to breakfast food because they did have some interesting and very seasonal specials. I enjoyed the comfy booths that lie the large window wall and I like how they change size as they go back into the cafe to make room for the counter and the kitchen on the other side. Decently styled diner with a large menu and reasonable prices. I visited here for breakfast as it was highly rated on Yelp and within 10 minutes walk of my accommodation. Unfortunately this walk involved trekking across the highway to the dodgier end of town. I was happy with my server (she provided perfectly adequate service) and the drip coffee. The huevos rancheros were another story though - their take on them is just strange. It was more like a cheese and refried bean quesadilla with fried eggs and tinned beans and corn and spicy sauce on top. The Classic Cafe in a nutshell: -- not classy or cafe, more of a diner. -- Friendly, though hit/miss in terms of helpful, waitstaff -- Crowded on the weekends, plan to get there early (ie. before 10) -- Find another place if you're a party larger than 4 -- Good portions, with the potential to share a plate -- Noise factor makes it not a great choice for someone whose hearing is going. -- Retro rock decor is refreshing change from regular breakfast joints. This little greasy spoon would be five stars, but I don't like wearing Classic Cafe as my fragrance for the day, so they lose a star. Seriously, if you go and brave the haze of grill and fryer exhaust, go before your morning shower and wear something you plan to remove and wash when get home because the smell can be a bit much. I'm a big fan of this place. I've been here about a half dozen times for breakfast and have never once been disappointed with the food or the service. Their basic breakfast selections are expertly done. I've tried eggs, omelets, pancakes and french toast and loved all of them. One of the popular items here is the potato pancakes, which are homemade and garlicky (you may have to pop a stick of gum afterwards but they're worth it), so you might want to order some on the side. I really wish I could give the Classic Cafe a higher rating, but it truly is 'A-OK." No matter whenever I have gone, it has been packed, and the service lacking. Feel free to wait 20 minutes to get your drinks and order in, but expect to be pushed out the door as soon as you put your fork down... which really grinds my gears. I've also always been sat near someone with a baby that really shouldn't be out in public yet as they are screaming their ears off, but y'know, that's not the restaurants fault. This is your typical diner, hash and eggs, bacon and eggs, abridged lunch menu, yada yada yada. I always come here for breakfast... nothing really outstanding on the lunch menu. What did set Classic Cafe apart is their table top tip sheet. Look for it! It explains the difference between eggs over hard and over well (I learned something!) and how hash browns and hashed potatoes are different. Also check out the potato cakes! Their corned beef hash is unique. It's run of the mill, until you notice they put their potato cake mix in there as well. It has been hit or miss with me, sometimes the right ratio between delicious potatoes and corned beef, but sometimes it's been way too much potato. All in all, Classic Cafe is A-OK, nothing spectacular, but nothing extremely bad either. The decor is cute on the front side of the restaurant with vintage toys and signage... but the 'decor' of the back is watching the dishwasher wash dishes... which is not so great. Came here for brunch with my girlfriends. Ambience was a fun 80s vibe. It reminded me a lot of diners back in New Jersey. Service was super friendly. Within 5 minutes, my waitress was there to take my order. After looking at all the reviews, I decided on the hashita. Portion size was ginormous! Definitely could feed me for three meals. The hashita had basically everything you can imagine on a plate. Potatoes. Meat. Poached eggs. Tomatoes. Raw onions ( which were chopped too coarsely for my liking) . brown sauce (all I can say about it was that it was sweet with no distinct flavor). I'm not sure if I would order this dish again given that it was a whole lot of stuff but it did not have a distinct taste. My friends got omelettes which they said were amazing. This was the best meal we had in Providence (for the record, that's not saying much). However, this place is awesome. It's a typical greasy spoon diner and dirt cheap. I got the "Small Plate" one egg omelet which came with home fries and toast. I got a bagel with cream cheese on the side and gave my fiance the home fries and toast. He ordered two pancakes and a side of french toast. Since the pancakes were $4, he assumed ordering french toast also was reasonable. The pancakes ended up being HUGE (more than he could eat which is really impressive). The "Small Plate" was more than enough food for one person (might I add it was freaking $3.99). Had a Groupon so decided to check this place out. It is very deceiving on the the outside as the inside actually has a lot more tables than I would have expected. They have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu with a lot of grilled classics. We chose the tuna melt with buffalo fries and the turkey club with a side salad. The portions were huge which may explain the price, each sandwich was $11.99 which I thought was a little high but you get a lot. The tuna melt was cooked perfectly and the fries were very crispy but could have been spicier. The turkey club was your typical club but did have a significant amount of turkey. The server was great and was respectful of this being a lunch break so she came back frequently to ensure we had everything we needed. Overall, nice place to check out, you can park right in the Citizens parking lot across the street and just walk over so parking isn't a problem. Now it's a once a month treat but well worth the drive. They usually have some sort of seasonal pancake and they never disappoint. If you don't dig the daily flavor, the reg pancakes are great, but HUGE. If you're getting any type of side, go for a single...or bring the leftovers home and heat up later in the toaster oven. Potato cakes are killer and you can watch them prep them fresh if you sit at the counter at the right time. My boyfriend swears it's the best hash anywhere. He tries hash at every breakfast joint and nothing compares. I'm not a hash aficionado, but I've tried it and it's good. Service is usually good. Only once have I had a sub-par server experience and she made it up with a free meal so I was quickly over it. The first restaurant that we had in mind had over an hour wait, but Classic Cafe was able to seat us as soon as we got in the door. Huge bonus points for that! There are 2 different Classic Cafes. 1. When you go there when it's empty. The food is amazing. Fresh and on point. The service is fantastic as well. Smiling staff, very helpful, and you're order is always spot on. 2. When you go there and it's busy.(today) There was a server that visibly rolled her eyes every time another group of PAYING customers came in. The same waitress was screaming at the dishwasher in front of a place full of people. I felt bad for the guy. Felt totally rushed. We got our bill with our food. We were getting items added on as we went, so she had to change the check numerous times. Each time she got progressively more annoyed with us. The food quality was still delicious. Visited this place on a whim after a doctors appointment today! Best decision I made! The corned beef hash with eggs over medium was delicious. I wasn't really a fan of the home fries but only because I tend to like mine crispy and they were more like boiled potato pieces. The potato cake was also really good and I definitely suggest getting one on the side just to taste. I tend to love getting lattes and cappuccinos as my caffeinated beverage of choice but I also love a classic good cup of joe. Their French vanilla coffee was great! Just what I needed. I have to be honest and say I was quite disappointed when i visited the Classic Cafe for breakfast last week. It happened to be St. Patrick's Day and I was craving some Corned Beef Hash- my all time favorite breakfast food. We sat down and were greeted promptly and I put in our orders. Unfortunately, I have a dairy allergy so I have to inform every establishment to avoid any surprises. To my extreme disappointment, i was told they put cheese in their corned beef hash which is something I've actually never heard of thus i wasn't able to enjoy what I had gone for. Feeling like I had been kicked in the gut, I settled on a plain 2 eggs and bacon breakfast with Hash browns. The eggs were great. Perfectly light and fluffy. Bacon was greasy thin bacon, but the hash browns were quite a let down. They lacked any hint of seasoning and were both over cooked and raw at the same time. My partner got a basic bacon breakfast sandwich which was pretty average. In regards to the establishment itself, It was quite dirty. It was a small restaurant and their entire kitchen was open. The prep area was quite dirty with food droppings all over the floor. What really kinda got my gut moving was when one of the cooks walked over and started taking chicken out of a box that had been sitting on the counter the entire time we were there. Seeing this was a real turn off and had I seen this prior to eating I probably would have walked out. All in all, if your looking for an greasy, cheap breakfast This would be your place. read more
