Finally tried The Corner Store today for lunch today. I've been putting it off for a while, but I have to say I was really impressed. Very cute store with huge soda collection to choose from. I had the cheeseburger with potato salad and a root beer. The burger was excellent. Really loved it. Staff was very nice and helpful. Can't wait to go back. I have to try the bacon soda for kicks. This is my favorite café in San Pedro. All of their sandwiches are really good, it's vegan-friendly, and their apple strudel is crispy and amazing. It also looks so cute all the time! By coming here, you are also giving back to your community (instead of going to a big chain like Starbucks). Starbucks is gross. read more

3.5 stars This is definitely the epitome of what a corner store of a neighborhood is. I loved the older and newer artwork done by the locals. It adds character to the place. This place is a cafe and tiny convenience store. On some days there is live music. I ordered the Catalina sandwich (I think that's what it was called) and it was unimpressive. However, I didn't expect too much and it was only something small to eat before I went to a friend's BBQ. What I really appreciated about this place are the local and the relationship the locals have with the workers here. I got a chance to talk to some of the locals (they actually started up the conversation with me because they had never seen me before and they made sure I knew that). They were all super friendly and told me stories about The Corner Store and their lives. I would probably come out here again just to see hi to the locals I befriended. :) read more

We used to live a block away and so we went a lot!!! It's a great neighborhood store - very friendly and convenient. It has the best soda selection ever. I'm guessing since I don't love root beer... but it seems like there are 20 of different root beers to choose from. Cool drinks from overseas or straight back from my childhood. Also, on the nostalgic side with their candy selection. Food .... my husband loves their bagel sandwiches with sausage, egg, and cheese. He can eat it pretty much every day of the week. I like the chicago hot dog cause I always crave it and can't find it anywhere. Also, their tuna salad on croissant is pretty bomb. So if you're in the area, pop by to get a bite and then head on over to a trail to walk off the meal. read more

I love this place. Great food, better coffee and the best company. I wish there were more neighborhood joints like this. They have an incredible selection of softdrinks. I do like thier sandwiches and their baked good are top notch. I would give 5 stars but I think the serving sizes are a tad small. Perhaps a reason I should give 5 stars considering the serving size is quite adequate and I am sure I am better off eating a few calories less but.....nit picking I guess. One of the best hidden places in San Pedro is the corner store. Once you find it you'll keep going back for more and more and more. Peggy (the owner) is always pleasant to talk with and work with and the food is just the bomb! She has a variety of coffees teas different foods, muffins, danishes you name it she got it. It is also a market so you can go in and get those things you forgot at the grocery store. The food is nothing great; nothing better than you couldn't get anywhere else. The "hoagie" is white bread (white bread--seriously??!!) with just mayo and the burger looks like some mystery meat that has a distant relation three times removed from cow. But don't you dare ask for a cup of tap water with what will pass for that "meal" you just ordered because that is verboten. Not allowed. That's right. It seems the kids that work there are under the impression that they can't serve the water out of the sink. First they'll tell you it's not purified...even though it's the same water that is delivered from the City's supply to every home, business, and water fountain in the city. Then they'll tell you it's a health code regulation if you question the first silly reason. Which regulation you ask? They say it's a Federal Regulation. LOL. Really, LOL. IF anything it would be a State or local one but it's so ridiculous that they should be embarrassed to say it. You want to know the real reason? It's a scam. That's right. Peggy Lindquist doesn't want you to have tap water (which is used to wash the lettuce that is put on the sandwiches by the way) because she wants to SELL you bottled water and soft drinks. Yep. They won't tell you that, but that's the reason. And there are some of us out here that prefer not to buy tap water for $3.00 a pop. You could at least be honest, Peggy Lindquist, and tell these uneducated kids that there are no Federal regs on local water consumption or that local water is safe to drink. And that the real reason is you just want to fatten the bottom line at the expense of your customers. Isn't that right, Peggy? My suggestion? If you're looking for a place to eat find someplace else where the food is actually good and they'll give you a cup of water that is made out of the ice that they put in your cup when you are forced to buy their drinks. If there is anything good to say it's that this place is most certainly funky; an anachronism (throw back to an earlier time). But not worth more than a quick peek inside or a drive by to a more honest establishment that will value you and your hard earned $$. read more

The egg v salad was pulled on so generously that the sandwich required a fork to finish. Interesting, home- style baked goods. I had a cherry- topped brownie, for example. I go here mainly for the coffee drinks: Lattes, Cappuccinos - but unlike the "rat race" coffee houses that are so popular; here I feel at peace, at ease - as if I was on vacation. To me, The Corner Store is an escape from our terse and frantic paced life to a simpler time where people enjoyed life more. I moved to this area 7 years ago, and I can't say enough about what an asset this little neighborhood store is to this community. Not only have I been able to get to know my neighbors through the "regulars" that frequent the store. Peggy does such good work to help the community at large, with fund raisers and spear heading campaigns to help local causes and families that are in need. She also showcases local artists, from painters to jewelry makers and musicians. Very cool spot that we recently found thanks to Yelp. Old school for sure with a very cool look. The outside sign that could use a repainting should definitely not steer you away. You will love your experience here and be taking back in time to the mid 50s. There are tons of great sandwiches and sweet drinks to choose from. They also had live music playing on Sunday which was a nice surprise. We had the Walk the Plank and the Corner Store Club. The club was huge and very tasty. This would be a cool place to come and hang out for hours and listen to music and relax. We chatted with the owner for a hit and she has done a great job of keeping the classic old feel to it. Not that I know for sure, but I am just guessing and she showed an old pic that showed the store looking very similar. We just moved to San Pedro and wandered in the other day, where we met owner Peggy, who immediately gave us a map of San Pedro and sat down to visit with us as we drank our coffees. What can I say? My DIL told me we just had to do lunch at "The Corner Store". Well, it didn't work out that the two of us could be there for lunch, but Bob was available. We headed out after he cleaned up from his morning fishing excursion (he did this daily on our 2 week vacay-he was so happy in San Pedro)! We stood in line for quite a bit as we decided what we'd order. I could tell that there were many "regulars" as we waited our turn. We ordered our sandwiches and paid and then I went over to the refrigerated soda pop section. There were so many ginger beers that I decided to purchase 2 bottles and Bob and I could have a ginger beer tasting! We sat down at the front window section, which I found out later was Peggy and Bruce's former living room set. There were 3 girlfriends sitting at the table to the right and I couldn't help become engaged in their conversation. The next thing I know, I was right in the middle of it! They'd been paddling at Cabrillo just before they popped in and the leader of the pack I found out later was a Harley girl! How fun! I fancied myself a part of the group had I lived in San Pedro as they did. Well, we enjoyed our meal as folks came and went and finally the lunch rush died down sometime after 2pm. The gal that took our order turned out to be the owner and her husband settled in across from her in a comfortable chair as he was now off work. We got to hear about their cross country trailer expedition with a few side stories involving gators and Louisiana hi jinx, how fun. We spent a good hour chatting and listening to the couples fun adventures and when we said we needed to get going they begged us to stay. All I can say is, lunch is lunch but an experience, a connection with 2 people that make a living being an engaging host and hostess was the epitome of a 5 Yelp experience to me. We made a stop at the Corner Store before leaving town and Bob and I shared a chocolate croissant. Oh, almost forgot, Peggy seems to be quite the entrepreneur. She has invited local artists to display their work as long as they paint, sketch or decoupage their version of "The Corner Store". You can tell they have a lot of regulars too. I know alcohol licenses are not that easy to obtain, but would be nice if they had one. The Corner Store is a San Pedro Palisades institution, and one of the reasons a lot of us enjoy living in this part of town. It has just changed hands, going from two Aussies to a local gringo, and so the atmosphere is a bit less Brit than it used to be. It remains to be seen if the new management will be able to retain the charm of the place, but so far they seem only to have improved it. Unable to compete on price with anyone, they compete instead by offering goods found nowhere else in town, or made better than others do. If a soda pop still exists in the US, they will have it, cold and ready to drink. They have their own baking oven, and the pastries with your morning coffee are outstanding. They sell fresh-baked La Brea bread -- as do many other stores in the area. But their touch with the oven is such that you prefer their version (slightly under baked with a crispier crust) than the same thing a Trader Joe's at half the price. More than a store, it is a community gathering place, a spot to see your neighbors, within walking distance of all the Palisades homes, and a destination for those mommies out strolling with their babies. The neighborhood would be sterile without this establishment. Keep up the good work. read more

I was so darn impressed with this place my review will probably sound bias. While looking for a place to have lunch on my moms birthday (with the intention of being close to the cliffs to enjoy our grub) I found this place on YELP. The place is totally eclectic and quirky inside, lots of random cool things to check out, toys, weird sodas and snacks. But the real party is the deli menu, WHOAAA! First off there is like 100 things on the menu and I wanted every single one of them. As a chef myself, it was just staggering to think of how much fresh food inventory they must have to keep on hand to make all those items. Anywhoo... My hunger family and I ordered a ton of stuff to eat, and while it was being freshly prepared in the kitchen I happen strike up a conversation with a very cool gal named Peggy. Turns out Peggy is the owner and she was super awesome and kind to us in every way imaginable. Also turns out her and her husband are sailors like my wife and I. She tells me that they make all the pastries and breads in house with there own pastry chef. But at this point its just a cute place with a super nice owner (I hadnt tried the food yet). We get our togo food in some containers, nothing special looking on the outside (duh). We walk half a block to the cliffs to eat at the park. I sit down and open my food container and what do I find inside (god I wish I had taken a picture) but that was the last thing on my mind as I gazed down upon the most freaking unreal looking bacon avocado burger I have every seen, and I'm a man who likes him some burger. Guys and gals, I kid you not, the patty as hand made and at least 1/2 inch thick, the patty stuck out another 1/2 inch all around the already huge freshly baked in house ciabatta bun. If that was not enough the burger was loaded with fresh avocado and delectable perfectly cook bacon. Sorry if Im going on an on here, just trying to express how darn impressed I was with the Corner Store. I could go on for another 5 pages about my families dishes, but I think you get the point. However now I am burdened by the experience as every Sunday when my wife and I go sailing in San Pedro, I insist on getting another one of these burgers. Its really not fair to make food that is so irresistible. Please try this place out, and make sure to always give small business a shot before heading to some crappy fast food. read more
