Wanted to give The Counter a try since I've never been before. Location is nice and the people are friendly. For the most part it's very clean and there's a bar as well, but empty and I soon found out why. Quality of food is ok and really overpriced. We ordered 3 burgers , 2 fries and tots and wings and the bill was over $100. I'd expect more for burgers, fries and wings. The service was slow for it being really empty. What I ordered: Counter burger was ok. Did like the strings onions in the burger, but nothing special overall. Tots were decent. Honey Bbq wings were good and the ranch was good. Probably the best thing we had. Overall place was just ok. Not a place I'd go out my way for if I'm craving a burger.

The burgers here are incredibly tasty, and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the quality and flavor worth it!

Never been to this location before and has been many years ago that I had been to one of these. Pricing shocked me back then and was still a shock @ $18+... with no fries! Thought it odd that when asking about a burger, our server chuckled and said I don't eat beef, but it's popular! Saw her again only to ask what we wanted to drink beyond water. Burgers were just OK and not memorable. Place looks like it needs a refresh. While I was happy that they have a military discount, a 4% small business fee was added.

Good service, we are not here at a busy time (late afternoon). Pretty restaurant, convenient location in the large Safeway shopping center. We like the "create your own" idea- customize it how you like. Portion are big, sides are separate, not included, you can add what you want for $4. Some more upscale stuff is a higher price. We liked our food, server was friendly and fast. Cost $60 for 2 burgers, sides, and water for our beverages. Loved being able to choose bread, condiments and filling. It's "spendy" but fun. There's a bar area inside.

Went for Weekday Lunch Special Food - 1/5. This might be one of the saddest burgers I've had at a restaurant. I have no idea if they reduce the size of the meat for their counter combo special, but the meat was laughably thin. The height of the burger came entirely from a stack of lettuce, as even the tomatoes were thicker than the meat. I ordered a medium rare and received a medium well. This wasn't entirely the fault of the kitchen, as with how thin the meat was, they should be praised for not cooking it to well done. Fries were crispy and seasoned well. Service - 1/5. The actual service itself was fine as they were friendly and attentive. What I found offensive is the service charge language that was clearly blocked by sharpie. On the website menu, it states "A 15% service charge for dine-in checks and on take-out has been included to the price of our menu items." which explained the higher prices. However, their in store menu erased that particular part of the menu, the server did not mention anything, and the receipt cleared asked for a tip. The prices on the online menu and the in store menu were exactly the same, so the prices should reflect the service charge inclusion. Yet they tried to hide that fact to take advantage of unsuspecting diners to finesse a tip out of them when service charge was already included. This was a dirty and shameful practice by their team. Value - 1/5. Burger was awful and way overpriced at $16 for the counter combo. This would be overpriced even if the service charged was included in the menu, as advertised online, but they tried to hide that language to charge you even more. I feel disgusted to support such an establishment with unethical practices. Trust the low ratings and hard pass. Parking - Mall Lot (Free)

While the baseline cost of this burger is high, the amount of toppings/fixings (~20!) you can add for free is pretty monumental. A hard boiled egg, no problem! Slaw, veggies, grilled pineapple, sure! All for no extra cost. So it's impressive and you end up with a towering stack of food. We got take out and our order was ready when we arrived, so service was good. We just stopped in, but it looks like a fun place to eat in as well. The burger tasted good, was filling, so easy place to like and nice variety of protein bases. I had the grilled chicken and my wife had the veggie burger.

    What they should have charged

THE WAITSTAFF ADDED THEIR OWN TIP AFTER CHARGING MY CARD Food 3/5. Service 0/5. Came on a Saturday afternoon around 4PM and there was no staff on the floor. We sat ourselves, waited 5-10 minutes before anyone came out the back and noticed us and eventually took our order. 15 minutes later they brought me the wrong order, and it took another 10 minutes for the right food to come out. Still hadn't cleaned dirty dishes off the nearby tables from when we walked in. Two burgers and two fries cost $70.52 I was frustrated and did not leave a tip. A few days later my credit card was charged $12 higher than it should have been, i.e. they added their own $12 tip. I called their (650)948-2333 phone number about 10 times before someone picked up to address the issue (there is no voicemail option). Apparently they will escalate to their manager, who is supposed to call me... sometime, I guess. Now I'm just waiting for the amount to be refunded. Maybe your experience will be better than mine, and the service will be fine, and you won't have to deal with credit card fraud. But keep your receipt and check your bank statement, just in case!

    4% Small Business Surcharge???

Do not go! Service was slow and unfriendly. Burger was plain and expensive. And then they charge you a 4% "Small Business Surcharge"!? WTH is that?

Beyond burger with weird vegan cheese that costs additional $1:50 and clearly not melted
    Lisa H.

It was just ok for $24 total with no sides or drinks! Yikes. I got the vegan cheese added not realizing that this was an extra $1.50 and it was super weird looking - not melted - never seen anything like this before anywhere else. Scraped it off. Otherwise it was an ok burger just way too much money for what you get IMO. Awkward to eat as most of their burgers are stacked so high even with just minimum amount of toppings. Ended up having to ditch half the bun to try to bit into it without a huge mess lol

the counter is known for their burgers, but i ended up ordering the "sonoma bowl" for more vegetables: quinoa, mixed greens, beef patty, tomatoes, onions, pesto, herbed goat cheese. the burger was decent (a little dry) and had herbed goat cheese slathered on the top. there was not much mixed greens or quinoa. the tomatoes and onions were oven roasted which was nice but i thought the dish had an unnecessary amount of onions. overall, it was okay -- i feel like given the price point, there could have been a bigger portion or more flavorful.

    Chili
    Christopher P.

I've been here a few times but not recently - in fact it's been a few years. And when I've gone, I've always ordered a burger - that is what they do after all! But the chili caught my eye on the menu so decided to change it up. The portion was large - enough remaining for lunch the next day. I didn't see any pics on Yelp so wasn't sure what to expect. There are many types of chili but I like just about all of them so I wasn't too worried. The consistency is almost like sloppy joes although not as sweet - you could definitely make a sandwich out of it. It comes with two slices of toast for just that purpose. If you are expecting more soup like then I would skip. Apologies for the pic - already had a few bites (have to remember the phone eats first!). I asked them to hold the cheese. It was filling and tasted pretty good - not the best ever but solid 4 stars for that type of chili. We also had the shoestring fries and onion strings which were both amazing!

(Underrated luxury.) Now, the hotel itself? Visually... a moment. It looked like someone invested serious money into it, but the design felt a little space-meets-startup-meets-what's-happening-here. Some elements felt elevated, others felt a bit makeshift. I genuinely couldn't tell what the theme was -- futuristic? celestial? boutique-on-a-budget? I'm still processing. The front desk team was clearly well-trained and knowledgeable -- they had every answer, every stat, every rate breakdown ready. But the warmth? Missing. I was hoping for a little storytelling since I'd never heard of the hotel before, and instead got a very matter-of-fact "we've been here five years" energy. Efficient, yes. Inviting, not quite. But let's talk about why you're really here: the coffee shop. Completely different vibe. Two people working, both genuinely happy, welcoming, and quick. We ordered a latte and a matcha to go -- total was about $22, which made me blink for a second -- but then I tasted the matcha. Oh. This wasn't the overly sweet, dusty-green situation you sometimes get. It tasted clean. Real. High-quality. The kind of matcha that feels intentional. I love Firehouse in Marin, but this? This was closer to serious coffee roaster-level quality. Smooth, organic-tasting, beautifully balanced. You could tell they care about what they're serving. Branding was strong, the space was cute, and I could absolutely see myself sitting there with my laptop pretending I'm writing something important. We grabbed ours to go, but it had that easy, airy, "stay awhile" energy. Would I book the hotel? Jury's still out. They don't have an in-house spa and mentioned bringing in third-party services for certain amenities, which made it feel a little less full-service than I expected. Would I go back for the coffee shop? Without hesitation. Delicious drinks, easy parking, quick service, and a vibe that actually makes you want to come back. Sometimes the side character steals the show -- and in this case, it's 100% the matcha.

Because, once again, I was distracted by the quality of the food, and there would be no way for me to do anything else, but to eat! Today, I was in the mood for something more than a salad (much as I wanted to preset what I had the first time coming here, I made a concerted effort to order something else...), thus I chose the Forager Flatbread. It took less time to make this time (roughly about five minutes after ordering), and when it came out, I marveled at how it looked like a work of art! Just beautiful! Each piece of herbed formage blanc flatbread had a nice, crunchy bottom (but not blackened) and a slightly tanginess, with a a good amount of "hen-of-the-wood" mushrooms, sweet roasted garlic and a bed of arugula. My, oh, my! My first bite was a multi-level extravaganza! The crunch of the bread, followed by the aroma of the herbs and arugula, then the saltiness of the cheese, the sweetness of the roasted garlic, the earthiness of the mushrooms - all came together as just a wonderful work of culinary art! This being my first time eating today, my saliva glands just fired off at first bite, causing a bit of intense pain from too much saliva shooting out. But, seriously, this was a very delicious entree, that I enjoyed from start to finish! Bravo for this second joyous experience!

Personally I'm a fan of the truffle smash with grilled onions and black truffle mayo -- I ask them to add tomatoes. The grilled cheese is a bit boring, probably because it's on the kids menu. Next time I'll ask them to add tomatoes and maybe the truffle mayo. The truffle fries are hot and nicely seasoned and topped with parmesan and parsley. They charge extra for the dipping sauces -- but the truffle mayo on truffle fries is worth it. You order at a kiosk which is easy to operate but I had a coupon and couldn't figure that out. The friendly staff was happy to help. My only complaint: for some reason it took a very long time for our food to come out and they didn't seem that busy.

Living with multiple food allergies can make eating out stressful and, at times, discouraging. Many restaurants try their best, but it's rare to encounter someone who goes as far above and beyond as Jason did. From the very beginning, Jason took my allergies seriously. Rather than treating them as a simple modification request, he took the time to understand my specific concerns and personally communicated with the chef to ensure every precaution was taken. What impressed me most was that he didn't just ask once and move on--he followed up multiple times throughout the process, making sure every item I received was prepared as safely as possible. His level of attention and care gave me confidence that my health and safety truly mattered. Jason's kindness was evident in every interaction. He patiently answered questions, verified ingredients, and double-checked preparation methods. Instead of making me feel like my allergies were an inconvenience, he made me feel welcomed and valued as a guest. That level of empathy means more than people without food allergies may realize. The extra precautions taken in the kitchen were remarkable. Jason coordinated with the chef to ensure separate cooking methods were used whenever necessary and that steps were taken to minimize any risk of cross-contact. My food was packaged separately and clearly distinguished from the rest of the order, which immediately showed me how much thought had gone into keeping my meal safe. Even more touching were the notes left on the packaging specifically for me. Those small details demonstrated a level of personal care that is incredibly rare in the restaurant industry. Because of my allergies, my meal options were understandably limited. I ordered a plain burger with sautéed green beans, while my friends enjoyed several different burgers from the menu. Although my meal was simple, it was prepared perfectly. The burger was cooked exactly as requested, allowing the quality of the meat to stand on its own, and the green beans were fresh, tender, and flavorful. Most importantly, I was able to enjoy a restaurant meal with confidence instead of anxiety. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their burgers as well, commenting on the flavor, quality, and preparation. It was wonderful that everyone at the table could have a great dining experience, despite having very different dietary needs. What touched me most from this visit isn't just the food--it's the care. Jason's willingness to communicate with the chef, verify ingredients, package items separately, use special preparation methods, and personally check in throughout the process transformed what could have been a stressful experience into an enjoyable one. For those of us with food allergies, being able to order food safely is something we never take for granted. Jason made that possible. Exceptional customer service is often defined as exceeding expectations, and Jason exceeded mine at every step. His professionalism, compassion, attention to detail, and genuine concern for guest safety are truly commendable. I am incredibly grateful for the effort he put into accommodating my allergies and ensuring I could enjoy a meal without worry. Experiences like this create loyal customers, and Jason is a perfect example of how kindness and care can make a lasting impact.

The cashier was extremely nice, and she was very patient as I took a long time to read their GIANT MENU. They have Thai Iced Tea milkshakes, I have never heard of such a thing, and I will definitely try it next time. This time I got a strawberry shake. It was my first day quitting cigarettes cold turkey after 25 years, so I wasn't about to risk my shake experience with a possible dud. The strawberry shake hit the spot, or as the youngins say "It hits." The burger and fries were delicious too, or as the youngsters say "Mad fire bro." I would pass on the firehouse fries next time, they were not fire, they were lowkey nasty, as the kids say. Check out my photos, you won't be disappointed.
