This neighborhood is low key local folks just relaxing over food in a spacious area. I have been for evening and day time meals, and I definitely like this place for the brunch far more. It might be because I am a coffee fanatic and this restaurant allows you to order the house blend or pick from 2 other coffees just for coffee! Awesome! Of course, iced in summer is best. They also have lattes and the like. The smoothies are delicious and nutritious. Good, interesting blends. They have shakes too, as well as alcohol and tea and soda. Plenty to choose from, as any diner like restaurant should offer. However, the quality here is much better than the average diner style set up, and I appreciate that. So many choices, but I will just rave about the almond flour crust on the tofu quiche for the vegans and the gluten free (they conveniently mark what is gf, vegan and vegetarian, as well as what could be a veg option if requested) crew. I love almonds and have not had an almond flour crust anywhere for a quiche- major selling point. Yes, not a flaky crust, but a delicious crust!!!!!! So good! The food here was horrible. I wish I had taken a photo of how sad the food was. I got the avocado toast, and my partner got the short ribs with grits, and gosh, the food looked so embarrassing. The avocado toast was made with bread from the sale section of the supermarket. It had thickly cut-boiled eggs and three pieces of pickled onions. The short ribs and grits looked canned and tasted like the Great Depression. I wouldn't recommend it, nor would I ever come here again. Great vegan options here! Vegan options clearly labeled on menu. Awesome place for brunch with omni friends since it is hard to find vegan-friendly brunch restaurants. I had tofu quiche with almond crust which is also gluten free. This was a great dish! The tofu was packed with mushroom flavor and the almond crust was "buttery" and rich. Thumbs up! I also had a soy latte that was really strong, in a good way . Other options I saw on the menu: open face vegan sausage sandwich, quinoa cakes, eggplant dip and a couple more. I love the ambience. Big open windows with lots of sunlight and it feels very spacious. Location is pretty convenient and walkable from Columbia heights metro. The wait does get long on weekends. I waited 45 min for a table of 2. However their espresso bar is open to those waiting for a table so that's a plus! Got to enjoy my latte and there is a small cafe section with couches / seats to wait at. I've also been here at happy hour time and The Coupe is also great for the usual happy hour/ bar-ish food. My Co workers enjoyed all their food although I cannot speak for non vegan options. Both times I've been here, service has been excellent. Attentive servers who are friendly and pleasant. My husband and I joined a group of friends for a birthday celebration/brunch on Easter Sunday. The wait was surprisingly not too bad for a place that didn't take reservation. They texted us when the table was ready and we were seated within 15 minutes of checking in. Our friends specifically chose the Coupe for their vegetarian friendly menu. Aside from the generic diner style huge breakfast platter, it offered items like tofu scramble and vegan sausage sandwich. I was tempted by their veggie options so I went with their tofu quiche with a side of honey glazed carrots while my meat loving husband went with their Moroccan bake. Although we were there to celebrate a friend's birthday, we ate like we were there to celebrate us... My husband and I also split the banana beignets and quinoa cakes to start (we called this "the post cruise diet" - our stomach expanded and felt constantly hangry). Quinoa cakes - I would eat these over crab cakes any day. Great texture and seasoning! I especially loved the coating of shaved almonds and pairing of spicy aioli! Banana Beignets - crispy, yet soft gooey centered, munchkin sized pillowy heaven covered in warm vanilla sauce and a touch of powdered sugar - out of the world amazing! I couldn't believe the generous portion too! 5 in an order? I guess it was meant to be shared - oops! Tofu quiche - the almond crust added a nice, contrasting sweet component to this dish. The tofu, mushroom, onion combo was extremely tasty. I'd had quiche many times before and was never a big fan - but this quiche had convinced me otherwise! The arugula salad was light and refreshing. The honey glazed carrots - although I don't think was worth $4 (the portion was tiny) - were perfectly sweetened and beautifully roasted. Only wished there were more in an order! Service can be a bit uneven--most staff are friendly, but I've often found the pace to be really slow or somewhat forgetful. The Coupe was all the rage when it first opened, but now that several years has passed and dozens of new coffee shops in DC, I was curious to see how The Coupe is holding up. I met a buddy for breakfast on a Thursday and stayed to work for several hours. Based on my experience, I keep on going back and forth on whether or not to rate it 3 or 4 star. Here's why: 1) The space: It's big for a DC coffee shop with a bar at one end and diner seating at the other. In between are a collection of chairs, single tables, and couches. 2) The food: It's good and their coffee isn't bad either. 3) The service: The staff is attentive and helpful. What prevented it from a 5 star: 1) It's always full and you have to come super early to get a space. People camp out here all day. 2) The wifi is a little shotty and their aren't enough outlets for all. 3) It's expensive. If you live in the neighorhood, I recommend this place, but it is definitely not worth a trip if you don't. read more

Yes. I am a fan. Upon arrival the Coupe was filled with lots of people. I mean what do I expect on a Saturday morning? The space itself was great. Lots of natural light (a plus in this dreary weather), lots and lots of seating, and a view of the pastries and part of the kitchen. It was like a modern diner kind of vibe? The menu. The menu was short, straight to the point, and there was option to have breakfast or lunch (shocker, its D.C brunch territory). Everything was a little different and could catch the eye of a picky person, which is nice! The pastries looked very good, though I did not have. I opted for the BLAT with a side of fries. Oh my. I love fries and these were some pretty good fries! The BLAT itself was a good size! The bacon and egg...mmm.. the egg was a perfect yokey! I was pretty satisfied with the whole thing and the prices of everything were a little less scary than most places! The service. I didn't notice out of the world great service or terrible service. It was good. Definitely didn't shy me away from trying it again! I say give it a try! Dont mind the 3.5 stars... theyre ridiculous. read more

The dinner experience is severely lacking at the Coule. This review is intended for the corporate owners who plan and manage the evening shifts at the Coupe. The staff seem to be genuinely trying their best, but lack the resources to be successful. Each one of the staff we've met have been there for training and then move on. It feels like the Coupe is a training ground for the other more successful/ lucrative restaurants in the chain. Please make more of an effort for the customer. Long waits for service in a empty restaurant are very disconcerting . The Coupe could be an enjoyable experience for everyone if given half the chance. read more

It's really hit or miss at the Coupe. I LOVE this place during off hours when the service is awesome, the vibe is very chill, and the coffee and food are amazing. Go on a weekday for breakfast or pretty much any meal and you'll be happy. It's one of the only places in DC where you can get great coffee AND brunch food -- almost always it's one or the other! The espresso drinks are first class (Counter Culture), the bagels are excellent (Bullfrog), and great brunch items are the veggie bowl with kale and cheese and anything with their fantastic hashbrowns. The coffee cocktails are great as well. For lunch or dinner, the veggie cheesesteak will make you honestly believe you're eating meat, and the burgers are very good, too, both beef and veggie (a hearty veggie burger). They have a great on tap beer selection as well. The big downside to the Coupe is when it's crowded - especially for brunch on weekends. I've had many bad experiences then, and once had to just leave after being mistreated by a wait staff person. I chalk that up to some of very young people they employ there who don't seem to manage the big crowds very well. In sum, avoid at very high traffic times and you'll enjoy. read more

Then, the owner posted a mea culpa to the Prince of Petworth blog, apologizing for not meeting expectations, and to work to meet them. So it happened I had an early morning downtown and Coupe was a perfect breakfast stop on my way back home. I had the Coupe breakfast. Just what a diner should serve, a full breakfast with eggs, pancakes, potato, meat. Ample portions, nicely served. Hash browns slightly overcooked, but I loved the onion bits in them. Chicken sausage an option, something not found at the chain joints. Everything else superb. To be better? Maybe a slice of tomato with all the meat and starch, or a sliver of orange or lemon. I had a nice breakfast, and I hope Coupe continues to improve. 3 stars to average this visit with the previous, less inspiring one, which is already generalized in other member's reviews. read more

Wow, what a disappointment! From when I was greeted at the door and almost put in the "basement" because I mentioned I'd be using my computer to the unfriendly service by my waiter. He could care less about my dining experience. I'm a waiter myself and I can tell you I've never been somewhere where they walk around and "show me" my bill on a tablet when I ask for the check. Guy didn't even offer me another cup of coffee. Needless to say I won't be back. Food was good, service sucked. No other way to put it, especially bad when you tell the server/host you're in the industry too and still get treated poorly. Came here for lunch with my husband today. Generally I've always thought the food was decent but the service was lacking in consistency and hospitality. Today, we had decent service, although offerings of more water beyond when the check came may have been more useful. As it's Lent, I was happy to find many meat free lunch options for reasonable prices. I opted for the grilled cheese with tomato soup. The soup arrived cold. If a waiter asked how it was I would've asked for it warmer, but alas no one stopped by. My husband liked his chicken kale salad and it was a nice sized entree portion. My colleagues and I work a few blocks away and decided to have lunch here one afternoon. We were excited their menu had lots of healthy and yummy options. We ordered the quinoa cakes and crispy brussel sprouts for starters and both were deee-licious and generous servings (which we later were extremely thankful for) For entrees, I ordered the grilled cheese with tomato basil soup for a cold day. The grilled cheese was so greasy, I couldn't hold it with my bear hands. The grease threw me off and the soup was just OK. I ended up eating the rest of the brussel sprouts instead. I've had great brunch here for years before the pandemic; so when I recently relocated back to DC, I was really looking forward to having brunch here again. Oh boy, things have changed since COVID. I went to this restaurant for a holiday dinner that my supervisor was hosting. I went in not expecting much but this restaurant has a nice atmosphere! The bathrooms are gender neutral and very clean. We had a full table so we were served by two waitresses who were helpful and patient. I only ate appetizers which was the brussel sprouts and some of the spinach artichoke dip. I highly HIGHLY recommend getting the brussel sprouts because they were fantastic. They are dripped in some kind of glaze and have a creamy, savory sauce with pine nuts that go on top. I could probably eat it everyday lol. The spinach artichoke dip is good as well, I just suggest eating it while it is hot. My first visit was excellent food and service. Second visit was today for brunch, the service was slow but the man checking on the tables was quite nice. Good food but service wasn't so great. The waitress looked confused when I ordered and I repeated myself then looked annoyed. I ordered the special pancake and eggs dish. It didn't come with butter nor syrup, when I requested it, the waitress looked as if it normally didn't come with it. I had asked her guy who served it but he didn't understand me (he had limited English, which is fine). Then I waited for quite some time for the bill.
