Just had a horrible experience at this restaurant, not long before closing time (8 pm)...but before closing time (about 7:45 pm) : I sat outside on patio (street level) where I saw one other table being served. I sat for some 10 minutes. Waitress came out several times to tend to that table - seemed oblivious to me. I got her attention as she was about to go inside, and she said, You're ok?" I responded I'd like to get served. She went inside - and about 10 minutes went buy, withe neither she nor anyone else coming outside to attend to me. I spoke through a large window as she walked near on the inside. I again asked if I could order something. She asked if I had come inside first. I responded that I didn't and didn't know that I needed to do that. She responding telling me (as though she needed to educate me) that I should have done that...that I should have known to do that. She further said that the kitchen was closing in 5-10 minutes, essentially refusing to take my order. She was dismissive. I asked for the manager. I came in and spoke to the manager--who was respectful and who did restate that it was standard for folks to come in and then be seated outside, and that the kitchen was in the process of closing down (I showed her on my Apple Watch that it was 8:57 and they advertised 8:00 pm). But there didn't seem to be any signage saying customers needed to check inside first. But more importantly--even if I missed some signage, the waitress was aware that I was not being served - and just didn't serve me, and didn't send anyone else if she couldn't or refused to do it herself. I respectfully explained my disappointment in customer service to the manager, and was allowed to make an order to go - three minutes before the kitchen closed, the waitress blurted out as she passed the manager with a smirk on her face (as though she was holding back from laughing)...in the presence of the manager as I was describing the waitresses attitude and body language: "You're still at it?" The manager did acknowledge to me, when I asked her if she thought this was appropriate, "no." Hopefully it was addressed in-house. But the waitress acted arrogant, entitled - and I'm not sure if it was just her personality, a bad day, being racist...but whatever it was, it was not ok. I got my order. Ate outside on the patio with no drink...my carry out order that was supposed to be a delightful dine in. The food was good, but with the horrible service experience, the spirit of enjoyment of the food was dulled. I don't wish anyone to lose his/her job in such times as this...but this, was totally unacceptable and hopefully there were some consequences. That is not good for business in DC - regardless. No one apologized. The food should have been on the house after all of that. But it wasn't. I haven't been to this restaurant in several years. This really threw me off guard - and felt like it raised my blood pressure a bit. Reminded me of some nasty old times growing up in SC. Truly hope it wasn't that. read more

I have some food allergies, and this restaurant was shockingly and dangerously inept in dealing with them. Despite checking with the waitress about the ingredients, the kitchen sent out food that I could not eat, which I only found out about after I double checked with the waitress. Then, instead of using common sense and modifying the meal, they basically sent out a bowl of plain rice and spinach and charged me $15 for it. Coffee is only sold by the cup, so if you're a coffee drinker with your breakfast or brunch, that could add up. The pancakes are flat (which I do like), and bland. Even with the added ingredients, it was still bland, and the chocolate chips were all collected in the middle and not evenly dispersed, which gave them a bit of a burnt taste. The bacon and eggs were good. Maybe it's just how the biscuits were served with the gravy, but biscuits and gravy (here) are different from southern biscuits and gravy. This was served in a bowl and not on a plate. The biscuit was crumbly and there wasn't enough gravy. The place seemed pretty empty. Wonderful lunch experience at The Coupe! We started with the Sriracha wings, which were saucy and well seasoned. For our mains, we did the taco burger and the fried chicken sandwich. The burger was tasty, though a bit overcooked. The chicken sandwich was excellent! They have happy hour every day until 6, so we were able to get some happy hour cocktails. I've been here twice and loved it so I decided to bring my dad here for Father's Day. Even being a holiday, we were seated immediately, no long wait. We ordered our drinks, lattes, and they were cold. EVERY time I come here my coffee is cold. I hate that. Then we ordered our food and it took 30 mins+ to get to our food with no updates on the wait. I ordered the hash brown bowl and in my opinion, it was very dry and uneventful. I would not order that again. I've been here a couple times and enjoyed it both times! Last time I came on a Sunday morning for brunch and it was quite busy and today I had a totally different experience since it was a Tuesday. Pro tip for a weekend: you can join the online waitlist before you get there so you can minimize the wait time. It was about an hour long wait when I went around 11am on a Sunday. We didn't want to wait an hour so we ended up just grabbing food from the to go counter and sitting at their plentiful outdoor picnic tables. The coffee was delicious and the slice of carrot cake was HUGE! (Enough for 3 people to munch on). Pro tip for a weekday: it's a much more chill work from the cafe vibe on weekdays. It wasn't busy at all and I was able to get a seat right away. I was offered to sit at the breakfast bar where you can order on the toast app from a QR code or sit at a table with a server. I opted for the breakfast bar and although it was a spacious place to open my laptop, the bar stool was an awkward height and not the most comfortable seat to sit on for a long time to do some work. It was super quick and convenient to get my food and drink but I would recommend sitting at a table if you're going to be there for a while. I've lived 2 blocks away from The Coupe ever since it opened and can say it consistently had the worst service of any place I have frequented over that time. The food is fine but it often takes close to an hour for things to come out of the kitchen. This was true 10 years ago and true now. What is different is that they now charge different prices than what is on the menu. That $18 burger will Have some BS service charge on it that pushes the price to $20 or more. read more

Came on a warm Sunday afternoon, able to sit outside and ordered their turkey, apple and Brie sandwich with fries. The turkey was more a processed deli meat instead off freshly roasted and there was barely any apple on my sandwich. The best thing was the cranberry mayonnaise to give it some flavor. I also wasn't impressed with the coated French fries either. Now the positive things is that our server was friendly and my ice green tea refreshing. My husband and I had breakfast here last weekend. Boy are we so happy we did. Everything single we ordered was so good. I originally wanted a London Fog unfortunately they were out but the waiter suggested a Golden Milk. That was a great suggestion! I loved that latte and will definitely get it again. There are also beverage options such as coffee, teas, beer, wine, horchata, etc. I have been here several times but my most recent trip was for dinner and I got the sriracha wings and coupe fries. 3.5 rating, only because the wings tasted a little dry after a few minutes of sitting out on our table. However, it was quite tasty and flavorful. The coupe fries was really good too, but also had a very different texture (became a little hard) after a few minutes sitting on our table. Maybe for slow eaters like myself this texture change is a little issue however if you're one to wolf down your meal as soon as it arrives then you might not notice this! The ambience is amazing! I had a wonderful breakfast today. The food was incredible. As you can see from the photo , the amount of egg and bacon on the sandwich was generous and the salad was fresh. The salad had just the right amount of dressing on it and was not swimming in it. The inclusion of a salad for this price was a nice bonus. The service was very good. The one issue I had which is a pet peeve of mine is that they charge for a refill of drip coffee. I understand that they have a large number of people coming in to work on their laptops for extended times and unlimited refills would be a money losing proposition. But for someone that is eating , one refill after the meal is not unreasonable. Charging $2.50 for a refill is excessive in my opinion. Will this stop me from eating here again , No. I plan on eating here again tomorrow it was so good. will it stop me from getting a refill , Yes most certainly.
