The food, service, and wine pairings were all wonderful and the portion sizes ensured we could enjoy each course without being stuffed, but satisfied. I had the beet salad, venison ragu, short rib, and strawberry cake. The beet salad was beautifully presented and every dish was flavorful. The strawberry cake was my favorite course, as the cake had a noticeable - but neither overpowering nor artificial - flavor with a substantial yet light texture that wasn't dry or crumbly. The strawberry ice cream was the perfect complement for it though the cake could definitely stand on its own. The standout of our meal, however, is the ahi tuna. It. Was. Remarkable. Seriously the best ahi tuna I've had (and I've eaten it in larger cities, on the coast, and was not expecting my favorite to be here in the Midwest). If it's on the regular menu, I'll come here just to reorder that alone. We enjoyed every bite of our meals with the only miss for us being the shrimp bisque (very strong fish flavor). The Crossing is located in an extremely old money kind of wealthy area. My and I are the only POC in the restaurant. So initially, I am quite nervous about what we would experience. However, the waitstaff are kind and pay just the right amount of attention; not checking on you every few minutes and disturbing your conversation, but seemingly always there when you need them. As far as food goes, they have a "tasting menu" which is super convenient to try a ton of different menu items without being too stuffed. The portions are huge though, so we got stuffed anyways. The drinks are strong and unique as well. I'd recommend this place if you're stopping in St. Louis and want a nice sit-down place. read more

What a lovely restaurant. If you want a cozy, romantic place with good service and a great menu, you should definitely head to The Crossing. I believe it's been in Clayton for a while and I dined here during Clayton restaurant week a while ago but totally forgot about it. The menu is interesting and has something for everyone. You can get full entrees and apps in addition to a really nice tasting menu and also a grand tasting menu. Most of us got the tasting menu and it was lovely. It comes with four courses plus bread. You also get a complimentary blue cheese and cheddar soufflé with toast on arrival. Delicious and addictive. The Apple pie dessert was yummy! They have a quaint bar and a very good wine and cocktail menu. Ours drinks were amazing. Our server was so good. I can't remember her name but she was so attentive. Excellent! My wife and I did the tasting menu and our server, Joshua, was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Something that was a nice touch, was that we were encourage to ask for substitutions if there was a dish that looked good but had something we didn't like (asking for no mushrooms, for example). That being said, no substitutions were necessary! The food was incredible and the service was extraordinary. The staff worked together to present the dishes with perfect timing. The octopus second course was a true standout to me. Great cocktails as well. The space also deserves mention. The room is split up nicely so that even when the restaurant is completely full, you still feel closed off with your party. Lovely woodwork throughout but with skylights for natural light!! I take clients here regularly for lunch and everyone always raves afterwards. The roasted beet salad is a must try - it's amazing and always perfect. We also always love the tuna tartar. Most recently we came on a couples date with colleagues and had the chefs tasting menu for the first time. It was a great time! Every couple had different dishes so you could swap bites with your SO. It was really cool and pretty considerate that they didn't just divide it into men & women since one couple is just women. Anyways our group loved the: Spanish octopus, scallops, some sort of lamb gnocchi, the quail, the fish of the day, the venison, and their apple hand pie and chocolate tort. Chilled corn chowder was delicious and the blue crab cakes were the best I have ever had--simply nice pieces of crab and a light breading with a tangy sauce. My main course was trout--flavorful and delicious. Dessert was a fried apple pie. The wine pairing was well thought out by our fabulous waitress Kala. She was so very knowledgeable about every dish and the wine list. The Crossing is an old school restaurant with old school service--so nice to find these days. The presentations were all beautiful and the food really was some of the best food I've ever eaten. I have not one single complaint about the whole experience. Our server, Joshua, was super attentive and patient, and very knowledgeable about both the menu and the wines. It's a little pricey, but not overpriced, definitely worth every penny. Loves this place. The food was so good. We ended up doing the tasting menu, which I think is probably the best value. The cocktails were so good, our waiter was terrific, he was wonderful with suggestions, and he gave really great descriptions of all of the food. Would definitely go back 10 out of 10. One thing to note, and it's absolutely not a criticism, I think they have all male wait staff. I've just never seen that before in a restaurant and I thought it was interesting. The Crossing was the first fancy dinner date night my partner and I went on so it holds a special place for us and our relationship as a milestone, however, that is only because of the exceptional food that was offered to us that created such a fond memory. Clayton is home to many exceptional dining establishments but we hold the belief that it is the crème de la crème and stands out amongst its peers. Using our tried and true PASTA mnemonic (presentation, affordability, service, taste, and atmosphere), we easily give the last three 5/5, affordability 4/5 (to be expected when attending fine dining), and presentation a 6/5 if we could. We recommend the dinner tasting menu and choosing two dishes from each category you each would like and then sharing to get a full, well-rounded tasting experience. You get to try ~50% of the menu that way! The kitchen and waiter was even nice enough to split the entrees and what they could of other dishes between the two of us in advance. That went above and beyond to cater to our dinner strategy in our eyes. We started with the beat salad and butternut squash soup which may have been the best soup in my life and was an interesting presentation of a salad that almost looked like a dessert and tasted like one too! A delicious start. Next, the spanish octopus and rigatoni. We each only had one complaint the whole night. For one of us, the octopus was a bit chewy or rubbery. For the other, in the main course, the venison was touch underwhelming in its flavor profile but was still cooked to perfection. All other aspects of the dishes and tuna were phenomenal. The finale with cheesecake and apple pie was to die for, and I wish I could have ordered more to take it home as well as a gallon of that butternut squash soup. If you are looking for a new dinner date experience or smaller more intimate group get together I strongly advise The Crossing be in your consideration if you do not mind splurging a little of that spending cash. The waitstaff was very respectful of public health and everyone wore a mask (there's a lot of places that don't follow this rule). Our server knew the menu inside and out and gave us great recommendations. She was a lot of fun! I started with the beet salad. The presentation was beautiful. All of the flavors went together perfectly. My entree was the Spanish Octopus appetizer. This was the best octopus I've ever had. The texture was not chewy and had a nice crisp outside. The Crossing truly represents their name, a cross between Italian and French inspired cuisine. We arrived on a Saturday night, with reservations, for a party of six. We were seated at the front of the restaurant, with a window side view. After everyone arrived we started with cocktails and wine and were served with their staple Blue Cheese Souffle and Crackers to start. After reviewing the menu, and hearing about the specials, we were all ready to place our order. Our starters included Octopus, Tuna Tartare, and the Beet Salad. All three were absolutely amazing, some of the freshest tuna I have had in a long time and as far as the Octopus, sometimes it can take only one minute to overcook it, this one, no. One of the best Octopus appetizers I have ever had. Our entrees included a wide variety as all six of us did not order the same thing. We enjoyed the Tuna, Branzino special, Mushroom Pasta, Scallops and Swordfish. Of the dishes I had the pleasure of tasting almost all, and everything was AMAZING! First off, yes, parking is a problem in Clayton. The Crossing has addressed this with complementary valet parking. This is not a bargain priced restaurant so go in with your eyes open. The tasting menus are certainly worth exploring. The portions are reasonably sized. Also, I was quite impressed with the attention of the service staff; young, professional and attention to detail. Each time one of our group left to use the facilities, their napkin was refolded. I thought my entree was well prepared and tasty. However, the pasta appetizer was exceptional. The fruit sorbet selection was wonderful and above average. The restaurant method of "doggie bags" was unique but serviceable. All in all, go there but be prepared to drop a few bucks. read more

I have been going to The Crossing for more than 25 years. I have never had a marginal meal there. Every single time the meal was at least good and the service was acceptable +. I really look forward to their specials of the evening. Love the way they pair different dishes and create good taste combinations. Came here with a friend on a Thursday night. We opt for the tasting menu with wine pairing. First course tuna tartare was nice and flavorful. Second course pan seared foie gras, texture was great. It melts in your mouth. Portion was super small for a $9 up charge. It was a little too heavy with the extra oil drizzled on top. Main course was halibut. She is vegetarian, and I was worried that she wouldn't have many options to eat. I didn't need to be though. Her and I agreed it was possibly the most accommodating experience we've experienced for her as a vegetarian. They suggested alternatives to the tasting menu, and explained that anything she wanted could be altered. They really made her feel special for her birthday as well. read more

I called the crossing and they told us to come. They made sure they had room for all us and were so welcoming. The service is impeccable. It's high end service but not the stuffy attitude. We were treated like like we were queens ... well and of course we are. The food ... where to start. The cocktails are delicious. We all decided to go with the tasting menu. I wish I took more pictures because each course was a feast for your eyes then your tastebuds. I started out with the Roasted beet salad. It was beautiful and amazing. Then I moved on to the Tagliolini- pasta with mushrooms. It was so fresh and flavorful. My next course was the Monkfish special. The flavor was outstanding and seasoned perfectly. The meal ended with VANILLA GINGER CRÈME BRULÉE. It's like the angels sang. The crack was prefect and it was so creamy with the perfect hint of ginger. Everything from start to end was top notch. First time visiting The Crossing and we really enjoyed our evening. With the reservation we had made there was no waiting for a table. Our server was very knowledgeable about all of the nights specials; that said, the number and descriptions of the specials could have fit on their own menu, so maybe better to print them rather than rattle them off tableside? It was somewhat overwhelming to be honest. With that behind us, our meal and experience was really good. We all went for the prefix meal option and house wine pairing. I really think this is the best way to go. With the upcharges for certain dishes, I think we averaged about $100 per person before tax/tip which I thought was reasonable for this type of dining experience. Most of us started with the Roasted Beet Salad which was honestly probably the highlight dish of the evening. A beautiful presentation of diced, roasted beets intermingled with goat cheese, mascarpone, toasted pine nuts, shallots, and a sherry vinegar. It was delicious! For the next course, 3 of us ordered the Tagliolini with golden chanterelle mushrooms. It was very flavorful and we all really enjoyed it. One ordered the Spanish Octopus made with tonnato, basil, English peas, smoked potatoes, and pickled peppers. She said it was the best Spanish Octopus she had ever had. For the entrée, most of us ordered the Alaskan Halibut made with crushed Yukon gold potatoes, haricot verts, heirloom cherry tomatoes, patty pan squash, and salsa verde. It was nice for sure. I wouldn't say it was overwhelmingly amazing, but it was good. I'd probably try something else next time to see what they do with chicken or the trout. For dessert, we chose a few from the options, with most choosing the Chocolate Hazelnut Cheesecake which seemed to be the winner of the options. Service was fantastic, attentive, but not hovering. Wine pairings were quality and paired nicely with the courses. The nice part about that was that each person received a different wine style per dish rather than us ordering a bottle for the table and hoping for the best. We chose the crossing for our anniversary this year. Ot was a great choice. Gretchen, our server was an expert at making people feel welcome and comfortable. The atmosphere was much more woodsy/lodgy than I expected. I had always envisioned white tablecloths, candles and crystal. The vibe is more casual and fun but still really nice. I had the beet salad, octopus appetizer and a veal cheek special. All were a bit outside my comfort zone but amazing. We got an apple fritter and an orange cKe for dessert. The cake was the standout. Before I talk about the details, I highly recommend dressing in business casual to make the experience better. 94% of the people are dressed this way. It's a nice feeling. We visited for my wife's birthday on a Monday. Highly recommend calling in a reservation ahead of time. The place was full soon after 7 pm. The staff is perfect and exactly what you want when fine dining. We never felt neglected and always had fresh silverware for each course. I think the premium tasting menu choices are the way to go. $58 per person for a top-tier, quality 4 course meal isn't badly priced. The selection is pretty diverse without choosing the few items that actually add extra to the bill. I'll let my pictures do most of the talking about the food but I want to mention we ordered a second plate of foie gras because it was that good. The portions were great.
