We had "Metal Brunch" here recently. It was very busy and loud in the bar itself but we were seated in the back covered patio area. I was afraid that it would be too cold but the patio heaters kept us toasty and it was much quieter so we could easily converse. Our waitress apologized because it was the first brunch that she'd worked and she wasn't familiar with the brunch menu. We got Chili Cheese Fries, Deviled Eggs, Stuffed French Toast, Vegan Burger, and a Caesar Salad. The sides were eggs and breakfast potatoes. Another side of eggs arrived that we realized later were meant for another table. We had to ask twice for water and the eggs came fried instead of scrambled plus our waitress left us alone for too long but the food was good. I particularly liked the crunch that my Caesar had. The other waitresses were friendly, I think ours was just a bit overwhelmed. read more

First time here and it was a good time for sure. The bar just gives the appearance of a typical mid-divey bar vibe but the patio and food is where they really shine. I don't frequent too many places in the county but this is a must if you're going to be in or around Maplewood. The food was good, though I can't recall what I specifically ordered, and there were no leftovers for me to take home. They have a good craft beer selection as well as beers like Stag. In theory I should love this place, but this is the second time I've left underwhelmed. I meandered in on a Sunday just after their brunch ended. The walls are covered in music and movie paraphernalia. Service was prompt and friendly enough. There were a fair few people dining in and Karate Kid was up on the big screen. I decided on the chicken philly with fries and a soda, cuz they weren't kidding about hot girl summer...it was freaking boiling outside. Sliced up chicken breast, peppers and onions, a slather of cream cheese on a hoagie roll, and allegedly jalapeno cheese. I felt like the chicken to veg ratio was 1:2. The chicken that was there was flavorful and juicy. It was then drenched in a nondescript cheese sauce. It was neither spicy from jalapeno or tangy like a traditional Philly cheese. The hoagie seemed a little stale as well. Overall, I was not a fan. Now the waffle fries were perfection. I haven't had a good waffle fry in a while, and this did fit the bill. All in all my bill was about $21. Based on the number of folks, this is a popular place and maybe I just lucked out with bad menu choices...but i think I'm just going to venture elsewhere when I'm in Maplewood. read more

I have only been to Crow's nest for their metal brunch on Saturday and Sunday. It is definitely a hole in the wall bar atmosphere and it's very close quarters inside. During brunch they play metal music and then all of their menu items are metal themed. Both times I've gone I was really excited about my food and the portions are really big which is nice but I think I'm bad at picking what I want because they were a little bland. However, everything my boyfriend got was delicious. It's definitely an experience and would be a great place to go and eat if you're super hung over. read more

My dad is a rock star... so when he was coming into town and we were planning his weekend with us someone recommended Metal Brunch. PERFECT; that is exactly the kind of cool thing I need to show my Dad here in St. Louis, especially when he is coming from L.A... We walked right in at noon, sat immediately. Christmas movies were playing on the big screen. In the back towards the restrooms there are tables with old school arcade games inside the glass tabletop. You are likely going to come in and think this place is just a bar, because it does indeed look just like....just a bar... Yes. They were playing Metal music - but not so loud that we couldn't easily talk without any issue. At one point a guy with a dog walked in - that's when I knew this was my kind of place. I wasn't expecting a whole lot; I was just expecting something cool and kind of unique to take my dad to for the breakfast where its just he and I. However, the food was awesome. The mimosas were excellent. I was still feeling a little crappy from the night before, so I went with comfort food basics... eggs, bacon, french toast. Nice and easy. However, my Dad raved and raved about the egg benedict with the bacon in it instead of ham and the fried capers on top. He said "I seriously think that is one of the best Eggs Benedict that I have ever had." Service was prompt and she kept the mimosas coming. I feel like this joint is overlooked for reasons that have nothing to do with the food and its judged more so on its location and appearance. Personally loved my experience that I had here. Crows Nest is truly one of a kind. Located in the Maplewood area. It is a great spot for brunch as well as dinner. The vegan burger is delicious. Ok, so this was a last minute change to our plans and I'm happy to say I wasn't sad about it! We arrived about 5pm, entered through the back deck area and were immediately seated. The interior is nothing fancy, but comfy with a chill vibe. I had the Veggie Chili Mac (I'm not a vegetarian, it just sounded good in the menu) and my friend had a burger and the smashed Caraway potatoes w/gravy. I wish I'd taken pics but we dived right in! The lowest rating I've ever given- I hope that my experience was poor only because it was an off night (positive reviews from others support this hope). Walking in, we didn't know what to expect and spent 5-7 minutes standing by the door looking helpless. After failing to find any staff to flag down, we went to the bar and got the bartender's attention to find we had to get our own table and self-seat (not the end of the world, but a sign or staff looking out for people obviously confused in the entrance would help). It was fairly busy and we weren't able to find a table or seats at the bar, so we ordered drinks at the bar and stood. After 15 minutes, a table opened up and we ran for it. We spent 20-30 minutes trying to flag down a staff member to get a menu. After we realized how long we had spent making prolonged eye contact with people we thought may be servers, we resorted to physically waving down someone who appeared to be a staff member leaning on the bar across the room. We asked him if we could get menus, he said yes, and he never returned. Finally, when a group of women and children sat near us, a different staff member appeared and began serving them. We had to grab the poor guy to beg for menus before he headed off again. When ordering, the server was noticeably agitated that we had ordered drinks at the bar and told us it was going to be a pain to figure out the receipts. At this point, we had been in the bar for over an hour, we were starving, we were tired of begging for service, and we wanted out of there. I ordered the deviled eggs that we had gone to crow's nest to try, ate, and got the hell out of there. The deviled eggs were fun and tasted pretty good. My husband and I decided to go to The Crow's Nest for their Metal Brunch since he's a metal fan. I'd been to The Crow's Nest for dinner previously, but never for brunch. Even though it was St. Patrick's Day, the wait was not long to get a table. We were seated in the back where tables are pretty smushed together, but we were just happy to be able to sit and order. The decor is pretty rad, with plenty to eyeball on the walls, and metal music blasts from every which way. Our waitress was really friendly and took our orders right away. I decided to go with an Irish Coffee and their Chicken and Waffles. While the Irish Coffee wasn't very good, they were generous on the alcohol. The Chicken and Waffles were pretty good. The chicken was fantastic! Perfectly crispy exterior with a juicy interior. The portion of chicken was a bit small compared to other joints, so it just left me wishing there were more. The waffle was your standard Belgian, and the berries with the waffle were nice and fresh. Overall, I'm sure we'll be back to try more of the menu. Thanks! read more

I tell ya, doc, it feels like Ive lost a friend Ive been going here reliably since I moved to STL in 2016 and the slow, painful decline into inedible mediocrity with a side of subpar service has been saddening. This used to top my list of favorite bars in STL but after a final nail-in-the-coffin experience I will not be returning. Veggie burgers burnt on the outside and mushy/stringy on the inside (not a good recipe change if thats the case), an $8 Stag (inflation huh), and our fault for closing the check before the food came out (lesson learned from a 45 minute wait on the check last visit) made this last visit hurt worse than my divorce did. Rest in Peace I know kitschy movies are part of the ~theme~ but having the Confederate flag splashed over the wall above our heads for most of the meal really didn't improve the overall experience. read more

We went in on a Saturday night and it was hopping! The drinks were strong! We sat and watched aovie of the projection. The service was fast and efficient and the good was above average bar food. I always like it when we find a bar with food that is better than it has to be. We had a Caeser Dalad, Hot Honey Chicken, Cheese Curds, and Fries. Everything was great. My one issue was that it was so loud we couldn't hear each other and I felt like I was shouting at the server because she couldn't hear me. But I think that is just me, nobody else seemed to mind, but my ears were ringing when we left. I would love to try it again at a quieter time. read more

Hidden gem of Maplewood. Going down Manchester rd you can miss this place if your not looking for it. An alternative rock feel with 70's and 80's band posters on the wall and Classic movies & shows are playing on the projector, classics like Ghost busters and golden girls is always a hit with me. Menus come out on old record albums. Not your average bar, definitely not your average food. Not only does this place have very good food, the portions will fill an above average eater. I was in Maplewood "shopping local" on Manchester Avenue and was hit with the lunch time hunger. I took the opportunity to not only shop local, but to dine local as well and what a better choice then the new Crow's Nest. I was promptly greeted by the bartender as I entered and told I could sit wherever I liked. I took one of the open booths across from the bar and started to take notice of their draft beer taps. They had one of my favorites, Schlafly's Pale Ale so it was a no brain er. After looking the menu over I choose the Cheeseburger with cheddar and Waffle Fries. As the server AKA bartender, (he was doing double duty and doing it well) left my table, I checked my iPhone for the time. Since there have been so many comments about how long it takes, I wanted to time it. Must have been a good day, my burger was at my table in under 15 minutes. I ordered mine medium and it was done to my liking. It was garnished with lettuce, red onion and tomato. I do not know where they get their tomatoes, but for a late fall tomato it was excellent. When presented, I thought the bun was a little over toasted on the grill due to the dark coloring, but I was wrong. It was better then a grilled one at Culver's or Steak - n - Shake. My friends and I were looking for a different new brunch place and we found the Crow's Nest in Maplewood. They have a huge menu at lunch with creative metal inspired names. On that note it's a heavy metal brunch and they actually do play heavy metal but it's not overwhelming most of the time I didn't even notice. We sat on their beautiful patio with seven people and got prompt service even with a large party. I got the chicken and waffles which was a large portion and tasty but could use more syrup for some extra flavor. A storm started rolling in and the staff offered us indoor eating to finish our meal but since we were close to finishing we declined and they did a great job getting our bills settled quickly so we could avoid the rain.
