I took my mom to the café on Mother's Day followed by a stroll around the museum and gardens. The food was amazing, shrimp and grits for me and the breakfast bowl for my mother, but the service left something to be desired. We had a young man waiting on us but it felt more like we were waiting on him the entire time. From being acknowledged that we were seated at his table to getting something as simple as refills on coffee, we felt as though we were an afterthought. We will be back simply for the amazing food but I will make sure to be seated in someone else's section regardless of wait time. read more

Holy shitake mushroom! The loaded breakfast potatoes were a perfect balance of bell peppers, creamy avocado, a sweet teryaki glaze, just a hint of spice, salted potato, wilted spinach and shitake mushrooms that are prepared to taste like bacon. This is a dish to remember. One of the best potato hashes I've found in Jax and it's a staple I order at every restaurant that offers it. The excellent expresso wasn't bitter but still bold. The perfect sized cup of tomato bisque soup floats one large Boursin cheese crouton and fresh basil placed in the middle. The service with Denyse was also excellent. She was very familiar with the menu and could answer detailed questions asked of the menu's minute ingredients. The live solo guitarist, comfortable yet stylish seating, adequately sized two tops that were still intimate enough to hold the hand of your date and calming ambience very suitable for a museum transported us back to our times of leisurely dining in the small streets of Barcelona. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor seating and surprisingly is open on weekdays too. The Cummer Cafe is a hidden gem of Jacksonville and one that we will be visiting much more frequently. It was a beautiful day to sit outside at an umbrella table and enjoy our lunch at Cummer. The chicken salad was delicious and plentiful. Full of craisens, apples, walnuts and chunks of juicy chicken all on a bed of mixed greens. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich and it was a very generous portion with apple slaw and a side salad. Good service, good food. Had a lovely al fresco lunch here with my book club. The service was excellent, the prices were reasonable, and the food was great. I had something I never tried before--garlic bread soup-- and it was wonderful, especially paired with my adult grilled cheese sandwich. The other ladies all had huge, beautiful salads. They had no problem with us lingering to discuss our book and an extra bonus was that it was a free Tuesday at the art gallery. Visited the Cummer Museum and gardens this Mother's Day. We first elected to dine at their cafe in the outside courtyard. We came when the museum and cafe opened at 12:00 noon. We were the third group seated. Long story short, after an hour and twenty minutes we had only been served our drinks and only saw our server twice during that time. Three times a manager appeared where I tried getting his attention as he was serving another table whose order was wrong and it looked like it could have been part of our order. After being there that long and getting no service or attention we all decided to leave. As we walked through the inside dining area it appeared the few inside tables were served and there we no patrons waiting to be seated. We felt bad for our son that had planned a nice Mother's Day visit to the Museum and Cafe. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place to eat. read more

I was very surprised such a nice lunch spot existed inside the library. I work walking distance away so have now been here a couple times. I've personally only had salads, but they've always been great. Very tasty, good flavors, good proportions of the various ingredients. Standard prices. I've frequented Cummer this summer and finally decided to try the cafe this week and I am super impressed. The seating on the patio near the fountain is so peaceful and relaxing! "Wonderful lunch in a lovely setting!" My sister and I had lunch today at the Cummer Café. We asked to sit outside and were asked to come back in 15 minutes. Upon our return we were sat outside in the lovely patio garden area. Our table had a view of blooming Carolina Jasmine and Ligustrum. We also had a view of the fountain that was a work of art within itself. Our server was delightful. Her name was Sarah. She was friendly without being too friendly, helpful and efficient. Our tea glasses were never less than half full and our table was always tidy. We started with a lovey cheese plate that included three cheeses, truffle infused honey (it was fantastic) 6 crostini a variety of dried fruits and spiced pecans. We both loved everything and finished it all. For our entrees my sister selected the Vegan Asian chop chop salad and I had the black bean and quinoa burger with orzo salad.. The bread on my burger was flavorful and fresh. The burger itself had a great texture and flavor. My sister fully enjoyed her salad. (I also tried it and liked it!) For dessert we both ordered coffee drinks and we split the molten lava cake. I did not have high expectations for the cake and was ok with skipping dessert altogether as I found the dessert menu ho hum. My sister wanted to try the cake so we decided to split it. I was pleasantly surprised!! The dessert was small but divine! The coffee drinks were also both excellent. We both took home a vegan blueberry cupcakes for our kids. They both reported that the cupcakes were super yummy! Having both enjoyed our long and delicious lunches, we will definitely be back. Visited the cafe one evening with a group of friends. What a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting much, maybe some appetizers and tea. But I was honestly blown away! The service was excellent, the food was excellent, the menu was excellent. That's saying something since we had a rather large crowd of 10 people... They had live music playing at an appropriate level for the space (so often when you get live music, it's way too loud... but they didn't allow that to happen here). The menu had an assortment of soups, salads, and fresh made entrees that change with ingredient availability. Everything was clean, and the servers were sharp and efficient. I just can't say enough about our wonderful experience at The Cafe at the Cummer a couple of Saturdays ago. It is with reluctance that we ever leave the beach -- but no regrets this time, to say the least. The folks in The Cafe's kitchen are very, very talented; the local beer was a treat; the server made us feel special; and, live, folksy tunes was the exclamation point. Oh, and it was a first Saturday -- so admission to the museum was free, thanks to the Weavers. (Whitfield Lovell's Deep River exhibit was amazing!) Then, we walked to the Riverside Arts Market -- another uniquely positive experience. It was a perfect way to spend a half day in downtown Jacksonville. Swanky atmosphere inside the museum, with a tucked away Cafe. It kind of feels like you're dining in a hallway, there is limited seating indoors but plenty outdoors if the day is nice. We were greeted and seated promptly, right as you would expect with a reservation. Our drinks were ordered and we browsed the menu. The menu is easy to read and has a manageable amount of options. Server had to be reminded at this point the cup of hot water would also require the previously ordered tea bag, after this mistake he was pretty attentive for the duration of the meal. We're had the chips with balsamic reduction arms blue cheese for a starter, and it was very good, but overpriced. I will start with my friends Mom's critique of her salad. She said the chicken was dry (she did not eat any of it), but the dressing was good and the spinach was crisp, presentation was nice. My friend had the chicken salad croissant and slaw, lacking presentation. Let me just start by saying it's the weirdest slaw ever, if you try it you will understand. Her chicken salad had too many raw red onions in it, but the croissant was tasty. On to mine...I had the Cuban. It was okay, it was just a version, not the real thing, with an amateur presentation. Along with it I had vegetarian chili, recommended by the server. He may recommend it, but I do not. It was not hot, barely warm when served and covered in sour cream and shredded cheese. The flavor was so sweet, it was like dessert chili! So, it was cold, covered in dairy and sweet, yeah I can't recommend. We did not try dessert, we were all 3 entirely disappointed with our meal. I will not come back for the food at this Cafe, in my opinion it was overrated. (Tour the museum though, it's spectacular!) read more

To use the word deplorable would be an understatement. The food was never delivered after an hour of ordering and once the drinks were set down we never saw our waiter again. I went there thinking it would be an awesome Mother's Day luncheon, but I was completely wrong. The manager only came by our at the beginning to wish my mom a happy Mother's Day. After the hour passed we just got up and left and left the empty beverages on the table (needed refilling after an hour wait). Terrible experience all round and a complete service failure. Hailed a different server to get fresh ground black pepper. They said ok and never showed up. In fact server never came back until they were hailed.
