Wifey and I visited The Dog House yesterday. We were in the mood for seafood, which in hindsight, probably meant that a restaurant that literally has "dog" in its name wasn't the best choice. However, other local establishments (the knack comes to mind) have both a good burger and fish sandwich. Their fries aren't bad either. As soon as I opened the cardboard lid on my fish and chips lunch for $18, I knew I was in trouble. The fried fish looked and smelled like Gorton's fish sticks, albeit with a much greasier finish than my air fryer produces using the same source ingredient. The fries were starchy, oil-laden, and reminded me of bargain freezer fries from Stop & Shop. I consumed one of the two austere seafood portions with some difficulty along with a few fries mixed in here and there for bad measure. Both the fish and fries ate heavy and greasy. The fish in particular had the texture and overly herbaceous taste of Gorton's and the consistency of canned tuna. The wife didn't complain about the fish sandwich while not complimenting it either. I offered her some of my fries, but after sampling one, she didn't go back for seconds. The coleslaw was completely inedible for both of us. The remainder of my meal, from the point the attached photo was taken, went in the trash. A waste of 35 bucks overall. Thankfully, the $3 Wendy's Baconator that followed was decent. Our recent vacation was informally focused on how many hot-dog places I could hit and this was by far the most fun one. Their menu has a creative hot dog for everyone - even if you'd rather have a tofu dog! My boyfriend had the the Hot N Spicy dog (queso cheese, Flamin Hot Cheetos, seared jalapeños, hot sauce, sriracha, crushed red pepper) and replaced the hot dog with a tofu dog for a few extra bucks. Overall our meal was awesome. I'd say that the hotdog itself was not the most flavorful I had this week, though it had 7 other dogs to compete with. The tofu dog had a nice crunch to it and ended up being a great vegetarian option while still getting a slice of the fun ingredients. Disappointing experience. Yes, the chili dogs are good as they should be. Two chili dogs, small onion rings, bottle of water, $25.63 plus a tip. Asked for a cup and was notified there was a charge for it. Pointed out that I bought a bottle of water for $3.99 and preferred to drink from a cup. What a vibe!! We LOVED this place! Stumbled upon The Doghouse after seeing great reviews and shoutouts on social media. We're staying nearby in Harwich and this was just a short drive! The atmosphere is awesome, classic beach town hot dog stand with a huge menu. SPECTACULAR. So, this is me eating my hat. I wrote a blistering review of the Dog House about three years ago, when new owners had just taken it over. I believe that, at the time, I was justified in my criticisms--about the quality of the product, the preparation, and the service. My tone, however, was not justified. Things change, businesses are bought out, and we all move along. In a sense, I was grieving for the loss of a favored ritual. Well, yesterday my wife and I went back and I am honestly delighted to report that my beloved Dog House is now better than ever. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, this is what the Dog House wanted to be all this time. And more, this is the archetype--the gold standard--of what a fantastic hot dog experience is really all about. First up, let's talk about the dog. I bought two to eat, so I could sample the new and extensive array of offerings. The first was a simple Split Dog with Cheese, my old standby; the second was a Pastrami Reuben Dog. The dog itself is very good quality, mild, and not too salty. The conventional preparation at this location is to split the dog lengthwise with a knife and cook it cut-side down on a grill. The Maillard Effect--of carmelizing the surface and making it slightly sweet--adds a dimension of flavor and texture that surpasses what can be accomplished on a grill, especially at the uneven temperatures on a home grill. In other words, if you really want to taste a hot dog that sings, you have to try this method. And this means you have to come here. The open dog is then napped with melted cheddar cheese on the cut side, placed into a traditional split-top Frankfurter roll, the bun is slipped into a stiff fitted paper tray, and the tray is sealed in a single sheet of foil which guarantees that your dog is delivered hot, no mess, and easy to eat. What we are talking about here is a fastidious attention to every minor detail in the experience of preparing, presenting, and consuming the lowly hot dog. Each detail has been examined, considered for potential improvement, clearly tested, and rolled out with precision and admirable speed. In this case, not only have they retained the old standard, but they have taken it to a new level and thereby improved it significantly. You see, unless you treat the hot dog with some TLC, it remains the lowest common denominator in the American culinary repertory. When you begin to attend to these details, it becomes something far more enjoyable, rewarding, delicious, and inspiring. Inspiring? Yes, consider this, my second dog-- the Pastrami Reuben Dog. They start with the same high-quality beef dog, split it and add the melted cheddar, but this is where the fun starts. Grill-seared sauerkraut is then added, plus a thick slice of moist and mouthwatering pastrami is laid on top, then some 1000 Island dressing, a drizzle of chipotle aioli, and the entire thing is then garnished with chopped green onions. It is as grand to look at as it is to bite into. The textures, the temperature, the contrast of sweet Thousand Island and spicy chipotle, the warm tang of sauerkraut... really there's nothing like it. And it's substantial. Another improvement is the fries: where they were once notoriously wet and greasy (but fresh), these are definitely fresh and piping hot, but mercifully neither greasy nor wet and limp. In fact they had that perfectly fried, crunchy outer surface with a fluffy, light interior. Super fresh potato flavor, the kind you crave. We couldn't finish our small order--good luck with the large! I washed the whole thing down with a freshly squeezed lemonade served in a large, maybe 24oz?, cup of ice with a slice of lemon floating on top. It was delicious! A tad sweet for my palette, but just enough sour to make your lips smack. So many additional improvements, what can I say? Taking credit cards is a big plus. Blowing out the ordering area with a beautiful new canopy is a massive improvement, I'm sure. For everyone who works there. Having the meal delivered to your table is a massive improvement in the overall experience, too. The area that was once an unsightly condiment station is now a merchandise area with all sorts of Dog House swag. It's so obvious that the new owners were ready to take a raw gem and make it into a fine piece of jewelry, and that's what they've done. How great it is to see the humble hot dog treated with respect--and fun. Honestly, my hat's off. All I can say is, I wish we had not waited this long to go back! It's a truism that it's easy lose a customer. But I'm so glad we gave it another try. This will once again be a favorite seasonal destination for our guests and family. It's the perfect place to duck out for a snack or to bring the gang and have a meal. Trust me this time--you'll love it. read more

The tofu was almost the same flavor as the bun ‍but the aoli and the toasted bun saved the dog.
