It's got a cute diner vibe, has car-themed burgers, and has super friendly staff. The burgers are good - nothing to write home about, but it's just a good burger. I had the Jaguar, because I am a sucker for arugula, sans bun. It had a good mixture between the sharpness of the arugula, the soft texture of the bleu cheese, and the salty deliciousness of the bacon jam. That being said, my burger was pretty overcooked, but the meat itself was decent quality. It isn't *cheap*, but I have found that in this area, you get what you pay for. Let me tell you guys about this place. My boyfriend and I dropped in yesterday afternoon with our dog, Cooper. The wait staff were incredibly nice to us and our pup, and we sat outside in the sunshine for our lunch. I got a peek inside and it looked like a very cool place. A neat retro ambiance, with license plates everywhere. I also got a quick view of the self serve Bloody Mary bar.. man, I'll have to come back to try that or one of the boozy shakes. The menu will give you conflicts you didn't know you could have with yourself. EVERYTHING sounds incredible. Their bread is locally sourced from Avenue, right around the corner. It took everything in us not to order half the menu. The waiter who took our orders was super helpful in narrowing down my list of choices I was trying to decide between. I ended up going with the "flavor bomb" of a burger- The Jaguar. It was phenomenal. They are good sized burgers and my head was telling me to leave some of it to enjoy later, but my stomach and heart were telling me it would never be as good as it was now!! In typical Bellingham style, I am always hesitant to try the newest burger joint. I mean a burger is a burger, right? Well I am absolutely KICKING myself for not trying the Filling Station sooner! Amazing! This is a cute, 50's themed burger and beer joint with lots of memorabilia on the wall from days of yore. I had the Thunderbird chicken burger and WOW! It was fresh, flavorful and amazing. No pre-pressed chicken patty at this place! The bun was a soft ciabatta role, the chicken was moist, tender, and flavorful. I even liked their "tire treads", which is their version of Jo-Jo's - and I am not a French fry person in the least. However I ate them all up! They feature local beer and cider on tap. For me, the Mustang was the traditional mushroom and Swiss (one of my favorite types of burgers); but also had caramelized onions and their station sauce (kind of tasted like a zesty/tangy 1000 Island but much better than McD's special sauce) served on a sesame seed bun. They come with thick cut curly fries that reminded us of cottage fries...super good. We also ordered a side of onion rings and fell in love with those. We washed it all down with a couple of malts. A chocolate for me and an Oreo for her. Delicious! Perfect consistency in that you could actually suck it through the straw! Two big thumbs up for The Filling Station! WTF thought this may be a good burger joint we decided to try. Ordered a combo number 2- 12 plus dollars, ended up with a slider and maybe 6 french fry things. the meat was small and overcooked with a smear of thousnd island dressing bun was the best part about this burger. My wife wanted a bunless burger she received a tiny little patty on some shredded lettuce with no french fries at all eventhough she wanted the fries, this was embarasing. I ordered the "chuck wagon" from them last week and it was great, hot fresh and tasty, then a couple of days ago I wanted delivery and decided to get a burger because the last meal was so good. I used viking foods again and this time I thought I had gotten food from a different restaurant, it was dry burger, wilted lettuce, and generally an overall sad meal served with the dry crap fries from the bottom of the tub. It had the appearance of something that had been held for a while. Fairhaven is a beautiful town! We were visiting Eclipse books (highly recommend!) and stopped by the Filling Station for lunch. The service is terrible. We ended up walking out before we had a chance to order. There were 2 other tables with customers in the restaurant, so it was not busy at all. And there were around 10 staff members behind the counter laughing and chatting. We were seated quickly but then no one returned to our table to take our order. I tried waving someone over after we had decided what we wanted. I finally went up to the bar to ask if we were supposed to order there. I asked respectfully and with a smile and one of the servers glared at me and replied rudely that no, I don't order here. The server will be with us shortly. Then she went back to talking and laughing with the other staff. I went back and waited some more. The staff is still behind the bar laughing and chatting. And no one came over. We ended up walking out. We ate at Mambo Italiano down the street! Wonderful service and courteous staff. I will never go back to The Filling Station. This was the 9-10th time I have been here and they are more than just a consistent restaurant. They have a staff that is TOP notch and it starts with their owner. He stands in the trenches with them and supports them by allowing them to do what they love and that is to serve and connect with their community. It's time to finally review this place. I've eaten here a few times and thought, this may be an off day. I've heard such great reviews over this place. This last time, I tried their traditional mushroom burger. When served, I could see that was just a dry bun, with cheese(melted), meat and some mushrooms plopped on top, then mushed together. Completely unappealing. I got the manager and asked him what he could do? He said to try the Chuckwagon instead. Reordered and waited. Got the hoggie style hot meat with cheese melted on it, but almost completely dry. I asked the manager again, is this how it was to be served?? He said that is how they make it. (The meat and bun had very little moisture in it) I mentioned that it didn't look like much care had been put into it. He said that's how it's supposed to look. Wow, really? I thought. I did eat it and it was about how it looked, had to use a lot of Au Jus to make it somewhat moist, and the manager said they would not charge me for the upgraded Chuckwagon, but only the overpriced Mushroom Burger price. I'm so grateful to hear that I wouldn't be charged a higher price for a low standard of really badly created food. Sadly, The Filling Station completely dropped any respect for customer service or caring how your customers see your finished product, and even agreed, it was the way they do it. My goodness! There is more than enough great little places to each in Fairhaven, and those businesses would be happy to create an enjoyable/memorable meal. read more

However, the Filling Station (Fairhaven location only-- the new Alabama location is still figuring things out and can be hit or miss) is consistently delicious and reasonably priced. I don't mind paying $13-15 for my burger and fries when they are such great quality. Honestly I'd pay $15 for those Tire Treads alone, they're that good! My family and I stopped in Bellingham on our way back from a trip to Vancouver, B.C. and found this place on Yelp. I'm so glad we did! The food and theme made this stop worth it. We happened to be there during Happy Hour, and all three of us ordered the same burger special. We ended up doing three different versions of the same burger--one was as-is, another with just cheese and lettuce and tomato, and the third just plain old meat and bun. Obviously my family and I don't agree on what should be on a burger, but we did all agree that the Happy Hour burger special, no matter how it's prepared, is one of the best burgers we've all had. We actually couldn't stop talking about it. We also ordered a couple of milkshakes. My milkshake had this strange aftertaste, almost like fish oil or grease. I've had way too many milkshakes in my lifetime, and I've never had this experience. It was a bummer I didn't get to enjoy it, but at the same time, I didn't let our server know since my family didn't taste what I was tasting. Came in tonight for the first time and really enjoyed our meal. I really like the "old timey" feel of the place with all of the memorabilia. It was pretty empty, it is Wednesday, so we were seated quickly and had ample time to review the menu. Decided on the special Firebird Burger, a spivey burger with pepper jack, cilantro, tomato, lettuce, avocado and habanero mayo. They utilize the same buns as Aslan, which are always delicious. The burger was truly one of the best I've ever had, really fresh green leaf lettuce (no iceberg which was nice), tomato and avocado. The sauce was where it was at, definitely had a kick, maybe a little cumin, and was creamy and plentiful. It was very well balanced with the fresh veggies and meaty Patty. My hubby had the Wrangler which he enjoyed, the BBQ aioli was really nice, a more subtle BBQ flavor, lots of pickles, and nice thick cut bacon. The fries were a different and interesting twist. Only criticism was the amount of onion rings for the extra $1.25, definitely could be a little more plentiful, I think I had 8 medium sized total in comparison to my hubbys fries. Ok, there's burger joints and then there's ridiculously scrumptious, gotta have it now, run don't walk kind of joints. The filling station is definitely the latter. Fun atmosphere with funky rock playing overhead and the place looks like you stopped in to have your oil changed. The food though, OMG! We started with Blinkin' Avacado which is fried with a great extremely tasty breading with a chipotle/mango aioli dipping sauce. Holy Hell - seriously good. I had an Jaguar which came with blue cheese crumbles, tomato, arugula, bacon sweet onion jam, roasted garlic aioli all on a salt n pepper bun. Jiminy Christmas it was fantastic! Not able to be a regular customer due to healthier food choices, I didn't know that they don't do breakfast anymore and that main second favorite option, the chili hot dog, was off the menu. Perhaps I should have left when I saw that nothing really appealed to me on the regular menu, but I had already receive my set up for the Bloody Mary bar. The friendly server offered to create a chili dog, so I stayed. It was nothing like the one I posted earlier this year, but the chili and the actual hot dog were good. A few remarks: The floor near the Bloody Mary station was sticky to the point that my shoes needed to be cleaned later. I asked for jalapeño vodka, but I don't think that happened. The fates have conspired to create for me the burger restaurant of my dreams. The Filling Station has a vintage veneer over a contemporary appeal. The vintage style sodas and frappes can be ordered "leaded" which means boozy. Also sriracha sauce was at the table when we sat down, which I was a fan of. I also noticed a brunch menu and a bloody mary bar. As a (on some days) vegetarian, I loved the blackbean quinoa patty. It is housemade. It had a slight spiciness to the taste and a crispiness to the texture that I personally liked. I prefer in my vegetarian food to be embraced and celebrated as its own thing rather than an imitation of a specific meat. I ordered the Mustang burger with the black bean quinoa patty and the waitress did not bat an eye so it felt very vegetarian friendly. It came with mushrooms, swiss cheese, and the station sauce. My date ordered the Jaguar with the beef patty. He loved his burger but mentioned the patty was on the thin side. But adored everything else about it such as the bacon and bleu cheese. The "tire treads" or curly fries were very good. They were in no way greasy and packed a lot of flavor. We tried the station sauce and a jalapeno cheddar ranch with them and were a fan of both. We split a brownie sundae and had them add the caramel sauce when they offered. The brownie (like the buns for the burgers) was from Avenue Bread. It was warm and gooey. The whipped cream, ice cream concoction on top was everything it should be.
