Came for the clam chowder. Not going to go over the deep end like a lot of these people and say it was the best chowder ever. I personally can't even claim it's the best in florence (only tried one other place, and yes, this place was better). This isn't a fancy seafood place. It's a fire fighter themed pub/restaurant. That's not necessarily bad, but let's just say there was some karaoke going on while I was trying to enjoy my chowder. However the staff was friendly and the service was good. Back to the chowder. Yes, I was goaded into getting the deluxe chowder ($6 a cup, $9 a bowl). Sure, it was good. Had a bunch of cheese, was nice a creamy and comes with a bit of extra fish. It was good! Not to mention very filling- a cup filled me up good. My friend got crab cakes and regular chowder (which she enjoyed as much as the deluxe). The cakes were nice and soft and came in an interesting almost like, mango salsa type of cream sauce. I liked it! There are a lot of seafood restaurants in Florence, and I'd probably try another before coming back here (refrains from making plenty-other-fish-in-the-sea joke). read more

Service was good and the staff was friendly. The Deluxe Clam Chowder was delicious. We loved the Steamer Clams. They add tomatoes and parsley to the clams. The scallops are served in a bacon and shrimp white sauce which is wonderful. For desert we had bread pudding and it was the best we have had. Came here for dinner while visiting the coast and really enjoyed the food. I got a Mushroom Swiss burger with their garlic fries (love love love!) and ate it all. It was a slow night, pretty empty, but at least there was a live entertainer singing oldies which added to the ambiance. If I'm ever in Florence again I'll definitely return! read more

What can I say about the Firehouse? That the service is terrible? That the cleanliness of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired? That I won't ever be coming back? Yep, that's it. The waitstaff was not very attentive, let's start out with that. It took quite a while to get our drink orders and food orders. When we finally were able to get our orders in, all that time sitting at the table left us time to look at our surroundings. The decorations, which, were cool, don't get me wrong, were covered in a thick layer of dust. There was a moderate swarm of flies or gnats buzzing around in the restaurant. The menus were greasy. The table was greasy. The seats looked like they were pulled out of a dumpster. And, oh, yeah, they were greasy too. My cup looked like it hadn't been washed and the waitstaff reeked of cigarettes. The food didn't taste terrible, but it definitely wasn't great. Again, the "best chowder" moniker gets thrown around a lot. I think the people calling this the best chowder need to get out more and taste some of the other stuff on Bay Street. It's better than Mo's and Homegrown, for sure, but it doesn't beat the chowders at most of the other restaurants in Florence. There was a general greasy cheesiness that our orders had which made the food heavier than we were expecting. I came to Florence specifically for clam chowder. I was going to go to Mo's because that's easy and about the only place I knew. I shopped at a bookstore first and said that I had come for clam chowder and was referred next-door to the Firehouse. Boy, am I glad I came. The restaurant has about 20 tables and is definitely a local place with T-shirts and logos from fire stations all around the country on the walls. I had the bowl of "deluxe" clam chowder which includes clam chowder and crab and shrimp with melted cheese on top and two slices of toast. It was really good. The service was friendly and the price was very reasonable. This is my new clam chowder place. read more

Crazy! No pasta, when 1/3 of your menu is pasta! 6 tables open but can't seat a party of 5. Fish and chip were pretty good. Steamed clams, without pasta, were very salty and did not have any other flavor. Could see a slim slice of pink tomato and an uncooked piece of garlic, but not much else. read more

Maybe the Firehouse has changed owners or something. It used to be one of our standard list when we go over to Florence from Eugene. Been there many times. Never as disapointed as today. Service was terrible. Rather like it was an anoyance that we were there. My wife had lemonade, and half-way through the waitress refilled the large cup with water, without asking. And, note the menu re beverages: sodas get one refill only, other beverages no refills, at 2.50 per glass. Food was mediocre at best. Her salmon was seriously over cooked, my fish &chips were not much better. The fish was ok, but a bit skimpy at 12.00, and the little side of vegies had so much water/oil pooled around them that the fries were getting soggy. As for the chowder, easily beaten at several places in Florence. And they let a group who had finished eating inside then sit and hang out at the sidewalk table, smoking, with all the smoke blowing in the open door. Not going back. read more

Save your time and money. We came here because this was the only restaurant in town that was playing the Ducks game and also allowed kids. They also started karaoke at the start of the game... which is fine, since that's what they do every Saturday. What WASN'T fine, was the service and food. We first got appetizers - fries and chowder. The chowder never came until we eventually asked for it. Then we ordered meals. There was only 2 place servings for the 3 of us. We had to ask for separate napkins. Then had to ask for separate silverware. The meals came out eventually and my girlfriend got fries and had asked for a baked potato. So they took the entire plate away. Then my niece got her plate about 15 minutes after us. She got a baked potato and had asked for fries. That's fine that they mixed it up, but when one comes out 15 minutes later, we can't just swap the food. Then when they brought out her fries, they were already salted and peppered... like someone who had sent the fries back, not like anyone else's fries. We sat right next to the kitchen. Nearly every single meal had some sort of issue - something wrong or forgotten. After a long day touring the oceanfront near Yachats, my friends and I worked up an appetite big enough to sink a ship and were forced to stop in Florence around 9 on our way back to Eugene if we wanted a bite to eat before the majority of restaurants closed for the night. It was getting misty and chilly outside making eating on a patio table a poor option. My one friend had a dog with her so we couldn't eat inside and my other friend was still recovering from the previous nights extreme drunk so she just wanted mashed potatoes, which is ultimately why we choose to go to the Firehouse. Coming up to the place you could hear a very desperate voice trying to sing country karaoke music and a lady with painted on eyebrows greeted us outside while smoking a cigarette. She encouraged us to go up there and sing but that was not our mission in coming here. We stepped inside to a full house of middle aged and older people. It seemed a lot of locals came out for karaoke night and we were again greeted by the host who kindly guided us through the menu and took our order. I ordered the famous clam chowder and club sandwich as recommended by the host. My friend ordered mashed potatoes and a Cobb salad to go. Deciding to wait at the bar and enjoy the show while our food was getting prepared, a guy with long greyish hair and tan skin almost immediately started up a conversation with me. He was friendly enough though sarcastic and I could smell the alcohol on his breath. Before we knew it our food was ready and the stranger wanted my info to look me up on Facebook! I was a little hesitant since I only knew him for 10 minutes but I gave in anyway. After pulling myself away from the clingy stranger, we were on our way back to the car and I couldn't wait to dig into our food. I tried the clam chowder first and though it was tasty I can't say it was outstanding. The club sandwich was though, with the buttered toasted bread holding in juicy freshly sliced turkey and ham, crisp romaine lettuce, onions, cheddar and mayonnaise, it was an addicting sensation with every bite. The host had claimed this was her favorite sandwich and I could definitely taste why. If you want a fun atmosphere and good comfort food with it, I'd give Firehouse my vote read more

Of all the choices on Bay Street I'm not sure why we picked the Firehouse but it was a mistake. Chowder was as thick as paste and about as tasty. Ice tea was weak and my glass of water tasted better. The burger was thick but very average. One reason that I ordered the burger was that it came on a "grilled bun with garlic". When it came the bun was cold and obviously not grilled. I was told that the cook forgot to grill mine. No other explanation and no offer to make it right. My wife had some kind of $12 chicken salad. Lettuce was old, chicken was little dry pieces, very dissappointing. We spent $30 on a totally disappointing meal. Other reviews are right about the place reminding you of something from Kitchen Nightmares. Clutter and dust everywhere. They have some kind of Deluxe Chowder that has cheese melted all over the top. I guess for some people cheese covers a multitude of sins. My advice? Don't waste your time or money here. read more

2 stars is generous only because the waitress was friendly. I ordered the shrimp Louie salad and added salmon which was a huge mistake, salmon was so overcooked you'd think the cook was trying to make jerky out of it and costs $7 more to add on, shrimp had 0 flavor, didn't get avocado or egg like menu said and dressing was lousy. Clam chowder is pretty good, probably is pre made by somebody who knows what they're doing. Wife had meatball sandwich which was absolutely terrible, barely any cheese, no flavor to meat (probably frozen), sauce was bland as could be. My family was in search of good clam chowder and a burger for lunch which based on reviews led us here. If mediocre and the feel of a dirty establishment is your thing then you've arrived. Clam chowder was ok but it had to be microwaved because it came steaming hot with a crust on top. Burgers were 1/2 pound over done frozen patties that didn't taste horrible but didn't taste good either. Fish and chips were shared amongst us and we thought they were pretty good and tasted fresh. When were first seated the salt and pepper shakers almost made us leave they were filthy and old. The chairs you sit in are cloth and you can tell haven't been cleaned in years. I've been to a lot of dive bars because sometimes they offer the the best food so by appearance I wasn't concerned. But it's a filthy establishment with very mediocre food. The clam chowder and deluxe (covered in panko cribs, bay shrimp, and Swiss cheese) were both great with lots of clams and no fillers. Waited more then 15 for chowder, never saw my fish and chips. 38 minutes asked our waitress for the check and asked her to take my food off the ticket. She went and discussed it with the kitchen staff and came out to clean the table next to us I repeated that I again wanted my ticket. The waitress then raised her voice at me to replied back that she was not our server and our server was getting it. She had served our drinks, and food. The location is great - just at the end of Bay St, a touristy old-townish area where you can walk and shop. The young ladies who served use were attentive and friendly. The fire department theme was cute, but maybe I'm biased because I have a thing for fire fighters. The prices are pretty good for what they serve, especially the seafood. The food itself is not spectacular but it's satisfying and hits the right spots. I had the pan-fried oysters and they were so big that the leftovers were enough to last me another meal later in the day. So, yes, portions vs. price is also quite adequate. The garlic fries deserve a paragraph of their own. My oysters were supposed to come with rice but they were out. In retrospect, I am GLAD they were out of rice because those garlic fries are the best thing that has ever happened to the garlic-lover in me. Picture huge sizzling dollops of minced garlic teeming in between hot freshly-cooked french fries. Holy smokes. We met our friends later that day and they saw the leftover fries and they knew they'd have to check out the Firehouse. read more
