The restaurant is new so decor is Modern and bright. Very clean and friendly staff. I didn't have much interaction with the servers as I don't speak Mandarin. My friends ordered but they seemed cheerful and patient. I've never had this type of dining before. First you choose your fish. May types are available and sizes too. Rock cod, tilapia, long cod etc. Then you choose your broth. I'm on the wimpy spicy side so we got the sour cabbage with rock cod that was deep fried. The other half got sricha and a softer fish. Tilapia possibly but under all the chilis, I couldn't see. My stomach just formed installed ulcers upon seeing all the chilis. Our broth was delicious. Good portion. The whole fish is served for you. Head to tail in a giant hot pot. You can add toppings like quail eggs, tofu, spam, etc for extra charge. We also ordered the geoduck. SO GOOD! And the oysters. The best restaurant on our trip. We ordered the mussels, which were fresh and large with a Thai basil sauce that you want to eat with just rice. We also got the medium lingcod in sour pickled mustard sauce with clear noodles, seaweed, and enoki mushrooms. This was large enough to feed 6 and one of the best seafood dish we had in Vancouver. Wife found this seafood restaurant in Richmond. First time coming here and we were not disappointed. Our waiter was first of all very kind to us. Not one of those people who try to sell you the very most expensive dishes on the menu. He offered my wife his honest opinion of what was the better fish even if it didn't cost more. We ordered catfish with sweet and sour sauce. Even though it's 1 chilli pepper spiciness, the flavour is quite intense for those who can't handle their spice. Fish was fresh and delicious. I especially loved the crispy skin. Definitely recommend getting the veggie combo with the fish. The veggies soak up much of the flavour. We also tried the mussels and 4 flavour oysters. The Fish Man's signature dish always hits the spot when I want something spicy. You can choose the main fish (and size) as well as sauce and the sides. They usually cook all the sides underneath the fish so you have to lift the fish to find the hidden (but generous amount) of veggies, tofu, and whatever extra you ordered. The first time we tried this place was when it first came into the Alexandra restaurant strip. As far as I remember, the seafood were fresh and services were quite good and on top of that the owner even gave us a complimentary order of fresh uni. Fast forward years later, in the Richmond area and craving for some fresh seafood and bbq so this place came into our mind. When we arrived, both the outside patio and restaurant were fully packed. Greeted by the waitress and waited 45mins for our table. Finally seated (YES! Once again a freaking 18x24 table again), we asked the waitress if we could change to the bigger table beside us, but said no cause it's for a bigger group (okay fair enough). Here were the food we ordered; 1. Stir fried geoduck with chilli peppers and bean sprouts. Quite nice and tasty! The geoduck wasn't overcooked and hot spices didn't overpowered the geoduck, and the bean sprouts added a freshness to it all. Well balanced! 2. Bbq eggplant. Quite bland, could use a bit of favour, nothing special to say/ 3. Beach oysters 4pcs. Had 5 instead of 4 maybe because they were small. It's nice to try all 4 different flavours but overall average. 4. Bbq'ed beef rib eye, chicken hearts, chicken gizzards. The meat were tender but had better favoured bbq elsewhere. 5. 2Lbs lobster with fried rice on lotus leaf. Very meaty and tasty lobster, but wish less gravy sauce flooding all over the rice. Proper way is to have it steamed and get some of the natural lobster oil fused together with the rice and also bring out that nice lotus leaf aroma. 6. Rockfish pot with chilli peppers and 3 added sides. First of all, the flame was weak so took awhile for it to heat up, the rockfish was a red snapper fish so the meat was tasteless and stiff especially when boiled until slow heat for a long period of time.Literally we took a few bite of it and that was the end of it. Kind of a failed for a $70 dish. Overall, the restaurant became a lot busier then before, that's good to see so I suggest arrive earlier to put your name on the waiting list. A very causal dining atmosphere but lack of customer service this time because my pile of finished dishes and over floating plate of shells and bones wasn't taken away and given a new one until the end when we were almost done eating. And the tiny ass table sure make it quite uncomfortable cause barely have room to eat and almost knocked my drink over a few times (as for the bigger table that we asked for that was supposedly for a bigger group, well it was seated by another couple 20mins later, did the waitress said for a bigger group or bigger people???) After trying to get into 3 places to get a taste of Asian food in Vancouver, we landed here because it looked like a fun vibe inside and reviews seemed good. The ambiance and buzz was extremely fun here. People were out at 9:30 at night eating whole fish smothered in spicy deliciousness. Wife and I got the spicy clams - such a great flavor combo. This restaurant was a random choice and a pleasant surprise, setting themselves apart from all the other Asian restaurants on Alexandra by specializing in fish hot pot - as in, we had an entire steaming fish bubbling in blackbean sauce at our table as the highlight! With high ceilings and classy decor (hanging bulbs, nautical rope, lightly painted brick), the ambiance was welcoming and bright. We were seated in a cozy corner booth, and our table was loaded up with the necessities right away - tea, water, chopsticks, napkins, and even a kleenex box (for allergy season maybe?) In fact, service was fantastic overall - we were always able to quickly get the attention of our waiter, and the plate clearing midway was a nice touch. Saw a server pick their teeth multiple times with their fingers digging into their mouth in the main dining room, not washing their hands, and continuing their job duties. It was unsanitary and disgusting. The kitchen area looked filthy, and the live fish were crammed into the tanks like canned sardines looking very unhealthy. This seemed very careless, cruel, and inhumane to treat live animals in such an apparently inhumane way. The recipes were good, as was the concept of the restaurant. Server's were very accommodating too. However, the issues I mention above are very unacceptable, destroying trust in the restaurant. Seems more health inspections and training of this business is required. Assume anyone who cares about the humane treatment of animals could be appalled by the conditions the live fish seemed to be suffering from. I pray the management fixes this quickly. read more

Cool, easy to figure out menu that allows you to basically tailor make your level of "heat" in your food and nicely, what you get is basically what is pictured in it; too many places have great looking pictures in their menu which just sets you for disappointment as the actual food is nothing like pictured. Ordered the Manila clams (large, juicy and NO sand!) a few beef skewers (spiced like from) Xinjiang and the "beach " oysters ( 4 huge, fresh oysters garnished 4 ways - delicious) as appetizers and a medium Rock Cod as our mains and just that few dishes left all 4 of us bloated! Every bite was heavenly. However, it seemed that we only got served half a fish since there was only meat on one side of the bone. We did get a full head though. Interesting move.
