I had seen this place on Yelp and the drinks were part of the reason I wanted to try this place. I got the Thai tea drink and it came with a dog shaped ice and it was adorable and really tasty! The soup also didn't taste like beef, it had more of an herbal like taste. The lamb chop spaghetti with tomato sauce is on the sweeter side, it was ok. I made a special trip just to buy their beef brisket noodle soup for my mother, and it was completely inedible.The beef was shockingly tough--literally like leather. To be honest, when we first pulled into the 99 Ranch complex, we had no idea that The Flame Cafe even exited. Even after we looked in when we initially passed by, we still had no intent of coming here (though, we did make a mental note to come back one day). However, after checking out where we had originally planned to eat, it didn't take us long to pivot to coming here instead. Really, this place just looked so much more interesting. Of course, it was also reassuring to see that it was a lot busier here. Not that a restaurant being busy guarantees that the food will be good, but it's better than the alternative! Compared to most HK cafes in the Bay Area, The Flame Cafe looks more appealing. The space is bright, it's relatively spacious, and, perhaps most importantly, really clean. However, as great as the vibes looked, the menu is what really caught my eye. While their typical HK cafe fare looked good (baked rice and spaghetti dishes, HK toast, milk tea drinks, etc.), I was super curious about some of their dishes that I don't see as often at similar places, like their teppan sizzling plates and chicken pots! -- POPCORN CHICKEN...$7.95 We got this on a whim after seeing several other tables get it. The chicken was moist and juicy, and I liked how crispy every piece was, but the batter felt a little dry. Plus, I wouldn't have minded more seasoning either. Still, not bad. -- BAKED PORK CHOP IN TOMATO SAUCE with Spaghetti Noodles...$12.95 The dish seemed smaller than the HK cafes I've been to in SF, but at least the price was proportionate. That said, while the pork chop was great, the sauce tasted a little sweeter than what I'm used to and I wish there had been a bit more cheese. -- TEPPAN SLICED BEEF RICE...$13.95 I was super stoked for this and it was so close to being awesome. The flavors were spot on and I liked the beef, but the ratio of meat/corn to rice was skewed (though, I always want more meat) and there wasn't enough of the sauce. -- HONG KONG STYLE COFFEE & MILK TEA...$3.95 Pretty standard, but in a good way. Essentially, it's exactly what you would expect - a delicious milk tea with a splash of coffee poured in. Almost like the best of both worlds! The one thing that was possibly the most surprising thing about The Flame Cafe was how awesome the service was. To be honest, it's something that HK cafes aren't really known for, but all of the workers/servers here were actually pretty nice and patient. The latter is especially surprising, as they never tried to rush us to free up the table, not that we were loitering around nor was there a long line (though, there was always a steady stream of folks coming in). Considering how there doesn't exactly seem to be a ton of HK cafes around Sacramento, we were pretty happy to discover The Flame Cafe. Even without many alternatives, it's pretty decent for what it is and I'd be curious about coming back to try more of their offerings (particularly one of their chicken pots and the Beef Brisket Noodle Soup. it's just that, coming from the Bay Area, it's hard to ignore the fact that there are comparatively better spots around that are closer to where I am. read more

The food was actually pretty generic and lackluster for 17$ so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have really simple taste buds. We were seated right away and the nice lady took our order. We tried the beef sizzling plate and it was good but we felt like it needed more. Maybe another protein? It was also really sweet. The popcorn chicken was really crispy and tender inside. The chicken was still juicy. The Hong Kong style toast was perfect to end our meal. It had just the right amount of sweetness. This was my very first visit to flame cafe as I had a craving for Hong Kong style French toast! I had attempted to come here before but the wait time was so long we went to another spot. The restaurant is super cute and clean! We sat in a booth and seats were super comfy. I had just traveled from Asia a few weeks ago so the aesthetics of the restaurant reminded me of cafes I had seen in Thailand and Korea. The food came out quickly and everything was so good! I enjoyed every bit of it and so did my hubby. My only qualm with the 3 cup sauce chicken pot was that the chicken pcs seemed to be more bones than meat. The flavor was amazing but each bite was more chicken bone than chicken meat. Not sure if it's meant to be that way, but it was exhausting trying to chew the few pieces of meat off each bone LOL! It was a solid baked rice, the Tom yum flavor wasn't too pronounced. It was more creamy and cheesy. The prawns were really juicy. The HK French toast was also really tasty. One of the first things you will notice in this diner-style HK breakfast spot is that the booth seating is spaced uncomfortably far apart, to the point where multiple diners, including myself, were forced to sit on the same side as our companions to share our meal without extensive reaching. As an OC native, I was immediately drawn to the sizzling teppan steak set because of its visual similarity to Pepper Lunch back home. We also ordered the spaghetti prawn in black truffle and Hong Kong style french toast. With these three dishes, I felt that we sampled a decent variety of what they had to offer and have to say that the food was disappointingly bland and lacking in flavor. -- Teppan Steak (2/5): criminally under-seasoned meat that tasted nothing like the juicy, bursting-with-flavor bites that I'm used to when steak is prepared Asian-style. as someone notorious for thinking that everything is over-seasoned, it takes a lot for me to feel that a dish needs more salt, but they managed to accomplish that here. the accompanying veggies were just there and did absolutely nothing to interact with or enhance the main entree. -- Spaghetti Prawn in Black Truffle Sauce (2/5): maybe I'm just not used to HK-style spaghetti but the tomato sauce tasted watered down and was also drastically lacking in flavor, without the slightest hint of black truffle whatsoever. prawns were admittedly decent and the only saving grace of this dish, which was overall mid at best -- Hong Kong-style French Toast (3/5): i'm definitely a savory over sweet bfast person so was surprised to find that this was our favorite dish of the morning. stuffed with peanut butter and topped with butter and syrup, this was the only one perhaps worth coming in for, though it could have been enhanced by condensed milk drizzle the way i've seen it served at other places Overall I was quite surprised by the numerous 5 star reviews lauding the authenticity of these dishes, which made me wonder whether HK-style food just isn't my cup of tea...? However, as another reviewer pointed out, they do offer a free lemon tea with Yelp review which could potentially be artificially driving up their ratings. There were a few options to order it and saw a different type of iced dog I believe which I think was matcha. The drink was yummy as well. They are pretty full seems always but even for a small place it didn't seem like there was a wait to sit down. I can't wait to come back and try the food here. We arrived about an hour before closing and they were quite busy. Service was good overall. I ordered the Beef Brisket Tomyum Noodle Soup (#503). The beef had too much tendon for my preference, with very little lean-cut meat. However, I enjoyed the flavor of the broth and appreciated the amount of veggies included in the soup.
