Wanted to write an update 3 years after the original. I've visited many times since then, and the quality of food and service are impeccable. The decor is always updated and the ambiance is beautiful. Shoutout to Wendy for being a fantastic server. She was super nice when I ate her for my birthday and she remembered me after just serving me once! She even helped me recover a credit card I left on the table. There's also a gentleman with glasses who I see quite literally every time I visit (maybe he's the owner?). He's very soft-spoken and knowledgeable about the menu. Is the quality different between dine in or uber eats? The past few times with Uber eats or take out, the quality has been horrible. Hard rice (undercooked or cooked and reheated- this is a health issue) and not fully cooked beans. Wilted lettuce that looked like it would make you sick. Less fillings of proteins and vegan cheese, etc. Recently had to throw more than half my order away since it tasted off and I still felt sick afterwards... Are certain locations better than others? Flees, flees, ticks, bugs, and more flies! They were literally EVERYWHERE. I came here for my birthday and was given a swarm of flees at our table as a birthday welcome! It was so bad that we moved tables! But that didn't help. These flies were downright terrorists! And I could not continue the uncivil and unholy war with them. So I couldn't even finish my food. And guess what I did? In the spirit of these Army Veteran flies, I FLED the scene! When a place has flees and flies like this, they should CLOSE down and address the issue. I could only imagine what their kitchen looks like. And that probably means they don't wash their food or other items properly. Go to ANY location EXCEPT this one. Do NOT come here. This unassuming vegan spot was introduced to me via my vegan pal who formerly lived in Los Angeles. They have quite a large selection of items on their menu, along with a special selection of authentic Oaxacan dishes and baked goods. The food was pretty good and tasted pretty fresh. Our waitress was nice and the vibe is a bit divey for my taste but I would come back for a beer and some food. I've been to The Grain a few times, usually for breakfast, which is okay. This time, I just needed a vegan dessert, so I ordered their strawberry almond cake on Doordash. LET ME SAY THIS: If they upgrade the icing? This would be the BEST Strawberry cake I've ever had in my LIFE. The cake itself is so soft, flavorful, and sweet without being overly so. The icing is chalky and doesn't live up to how fantastic the cake is. I would absolutely love it if they swapped it out for vegan whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Wow what a variety of food...and all vegan not used to having so many options! Got to try vegan tuna and a club sandwich for fhe first time thanks to the vegan versions! The hot sauce fhey offered was really good too. The roll was a huge serving...we all shared it. The sandwich came with potatoes so it was really filling, just a little dry. The food was just so so. The romaine lettuce in the salad wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. The strawberry margarita was ok but I didn't taste any alcohol. Really delicious with high quality ingredients. Friendly service. Surprising to see and know that it's entirely vegan here. Had the breakfast burrito and it was really tasty! With their homemade hot sauce--yum! Low lighting inside for early morning, recommend a little more lighting for mornings and can be dimmed at night--just a suggestion. It was a little dark at 6:45-7:00 in the morning when folks need to wake up haha. Overall, really enjoyed it and food was really good. Looking forward to try more other options. Also had the cappuccino Italiano which wasn't great but okay. Everything tasted fresh and it was a really good vegan burrito with good protein! We've been here before, but it has been a while since we last tried the food here. My wife got the Sautéed Kale with tempeh and a veggie pizza. She liked the kale stir fry, but there was a spice in the tempeh that she wasn't fond of. The veggie pizza was good, but a bit too much cheese. I got the Chicken Fajitas. They were very tasty. The rice and beans were good too, and more than I could eat. (FYI: The number one item according to the waiter was the Club Sandwich.) For dessert we split a carrot cake. Disappointing. I've been coming to this location for years, and it really has gone downhill. Poor management and food quality has decreased significantly. We found a hair in one of the plant based sausages which was disgusting. You're better off spending your money elsewhere. The only redeeming quality are their cakes which are not made in house. read more

The food was lacking flavor. The mole burrito was basically mole sauce with bell peppers and a tiny bit of chicken. The pizza was the size of an average plate slightly bigger than a personal size. (For 18$ ) The pizza dough had no flavor, I wanted to give raving reviews about the server because she was sweet, but unfortunately she didn't come back to check on us after the food was dropped, which is huge for me. My friend and I walk in at 6 pm on a Monday evening and are the only people in the restaurant. I ordered the chicken mole burrito. It was tasteless which made it hard to eat. My friend ordered the lentil soup and club sandwich. The waitress disappeared after she delivered our food. The service was non existent for the next 90 minutes until I finally saw the waitress and asked for the bill. She was sweet but it took another 15 minutes to get the bill. I hate to trash a restaurant. It's people's livelihoods. But. There's no one eating at Grain Cafe and the food isn't good. My friend said, "I hope your mole burrito was good, I did notice you left some. I ate mine but it wasn't particularly noteworthy or tasty. Super delicious food! Service a bit lacking. Went for brunch with a friend, big menu, lots of choices. Our food came pretty fast. My friend had the pancake breakfast complete with an omelette and a huge portion of hash browns. Excellent! I had enchiladas with black beans and rice. My enchiladas offered different sauces. I opted for the mole sauce. I love mole sauce. It's so rare to find mole sauce at a restaurant. It's even more rare to find good mole sauce. And extremely rare to find good vegan mole sauce! Also excellent! super delicious! Only problem was I ordered a side of a poached Yo Egg to go with my enchiladas and they didn't bring it with my meal and after I asked they still didn't bring it until about 25 minutes after my meal came. I tried to wait, my meal got cold. And all I got was "Sorry, they made a mistake on the first one." I'm sure this isn't their regular mode of operation, but disconcerting none the less. read more

What a cute vegan spot. These guys offer breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as offer wine, beer and cocktails. We went in for lunch on a Saturday and there were plenty of tables. Once seated our server came up to us right away with water and menus. So much to choose from but I went with the Reuben because that's what drew me there in the first place. We also ordered Sopes as an app and my husband ordered a Hotdog. I ordered a white wine. The Sopes were okay...a little bit on the dry side. I wouldn't order them again. My Reuben however was amazing! It was made with tempeh so at first I thought the texture would be weird but it worked because the flavor was spot on. My husband's Hotdog was just ok. He wouldn't order it again. It was more of a rolled loaf than an actual Hotdog. I also ordered a Red Sangria and it was really tasty. All in all the service was great, ambiance was aesthetically pleasing and the food was good enough to have me go back and try out more of the menu. This is one of my favorite places to go. The dishes are always sooo hearty and satisfying. Tried the Huevos Rancheros this time and it's a close tie with the chilaquiles. If your date is vegan/vegetarian and gluten free, this is what you do: Bring them to The Grain Cafe. Come at sunset when the sun floods the restaurant in a golden glow. Pick a secluded corner to sit in so that you can talk unabashedly and say all the things. Your veggie date will have plenty of options, like...all of them. The entire menu is vegan! Yes, even the things that say 'chicken', 'tuna', and 'carne asada'. And there are lots of gluten-free items, you can tell because they label them GF. They also label items that are SF (soy free) and NF (nut free). I'm telling you, this place is on it! Nothing falls short here. Nothing is left desired. It's been a long time since i've been to a truly 5-star restaurant, but maaaaaaaaan, The Grain Cafe earned this easily! The service was fantastic - we were greeted warmly, checked in on, never had to ask for anything like straws or utensils and every interaction was met with a genuine smile. The food though. Damn. The bar has been raised here. I knew shit was gonna be good when I got my mint lemonade. I am not exaggerating when I say it tasted like they had just picked the mint and muddled it into my glass. Which, they probably did. It had that freshly expelled mint oil taste that is just so freaking refreshing and intoxicating. And I know those were fresh squeezed lemons because it had that pop of tartness that hits you in your throat in the most wonderful way. Get the mint lemonade - it's incredible and worth every penny. Guacamole and chips were fantastic as well. Fresh guac, of course, made just the way I make it at home. Chips were thin and crispy, not too greasy. Just perfect. We got there during happy hour when tacos are just $3.50 each. I got a full-sized potato and cheese taco that came in a crunchy green taco shell (spinach corn tortilla) and topped with all the fixings. It was delicious! Plenty of mashed potato with vegan cheddar cheese ribbons throughout and topped with shredded cabbage, pico and vegan sour cream. As a vegetarian, I don't usually like vegan cheese because of the texture and lack of flavor, but The Grain Cafe has perfected it and somehow made it taste good. Amazing. I couldn't pass up the gluten-free waffle and am so glad I didn't. First of all, it's enough for two people (even though I ate every last bite myself). It comes beautifully presented, topped with a berry compote and dusted with powdered sugar. There is also (vegan) whipped cream on the side. And...it...is...incredible. I've only recently started my foray into GF waffles and pancakes but already know this is going to be the best. I couldn't stop eating it, even after my stomach was stretched and telling me to stop. It was light and fluffy with a deep, almost nutty taste. I'm sad I didn't get any pics of it to show you this time, but don't worry, i'll have it again and be sure to snap a few :) They also have beer, wine and cocktails at this location. The bestie got a couple margaritas and they also tasted super fresh and were incredible. It's going to be hard not to come here on all our bestie dates. It's the only place I want to eat now. Ever. In life. oh! one more thing: i'm not sure if the fake meats are gluten-free. There are GF brands out there (Beyond Meat has a few choices), but I didn't ask about the ones they serve here. I got the Mañanero drink with a mini corona, so yummy, the agave tequila in it added the perfect zing! Served so nice, polite and prompt. Had a fun playlist form the 2010's (my favorite). The dragon roll was amazing! It said it had tuna in it but didn't taste like it. Even if it wasn't real tuna, the flavor was so good that I didn't care and ate it all up. It's my favourite restaurant in Long Beach, but I meet a friend around west La Every Saturday so I found this location & was pleasantly surprised to see they serve liquor! I didn't get any this time, but definitely for next time! He got sushi (dragon roll) & said it was really good even though he's not a vegan himself. I got the French toast which I always get because it's God's creation, truly. I also got a caramel latte which had a cat design on it :) and he got horchata. We got to sample the horchata before ordering it and he fell in love. They have all these amazing cakes too!!!! Definitely great if ur hosting or coming to a bridal shower. I need to start sampling and reviewing the cakes :) All-time favourite restaurant because the menu has every possible food group imaginable. Breakfast food, sushi, Mexican food, sandwiches, Mediterranean food, superfood smoothies, coffee lattes, pizza, it honestly goes on and on... Also, the noise level is verrrrrry low. The two times we've been to The Grain Cafe recently there were almost no other customers and plenty places to sit inside. Wooden tables and chairs. It was lunchtime. Other times we were there, we sat on the nice patio. Plenty options to order from! I chose chile relleno once and huevos a la mexicana another time. My friend chose "choose your own options". The whole menu is vegetarian. Thre taste is delicious and everything looks very healthy. The service is great. Danielle patiently explains anything on the menu explicitly. Ambiance is pleasant. Drinks include lots of varieties of tea, which were very good. Parking in the lot directly in front of the restaurant--no problem at all. I paid about $30 with tip and tax. read more

Been coming here since 2017 so sometimes I order through DoorDash or UberEats. I decided to do ubereats today and I specifically asked in the note may I have two hot sauces please. On top of that I called and asked for the same thing. I received my order with no hot sauces and it blew my mind. It reminds me of a time I ordered the Deluxe Waffle plate and they gave me no date syrup. The food here is good, and consistent. It's not above and beyond but it's definitely better than a lot of places. If you want the best service then dine it-- because it's little to no care with the takeout orders. You either drive home and realize they didn't pack something or you order from a courier and notice the same. I guess their effort is placed with their good customer service in person. This place is a vibe. It reminds me of the Mexican restaurants I used to go to with the family when I was growing up. It has a mini cantina and the decor made me feel welcomed and at home. Plus, they had Spanish music playing which really sealed the whole thing for me. The service was quick but they did part of our wrong initially (brought out the wrong crepe) but fixed it quickly. This review is long overdue! We love this restaurant! We come here on a weekly basis, whether it's for their breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Not to mention the holiday specials they cook up. We've tried everything from the amazing chilaquiles to the delicious asada tacos, or the super tasty club sandwich. So many great options. The staff is great too, especially Juan!
